The Sony Alpha A55 – Photokina 2010 with Warehouse Express
David Pogue from the NewYorkTimes published an article baout the new Sony Translucent cameras. You can read it here: NYtimes. This is porbably one of the most funny to read reviews!
Also Pixiq tested the Sony A33/55. This is a more “classic” technical review.
P.S: Miracle! Amazon US is taking preorderors of the Sony A55 (Click here) 🙂

Less Miraculous… “ships in one to three months”
I guess you could wait for it to be in stock and order it then.
Already have mine on pre-order with Adorama
I expected some video feature firmware upgrade also for A55, but in Sony obviously working not more than one programmer and he/she was busy to elaborate stpd NEX GUI…
Who knows :p For all you know, NEX might be making more money for them and over in Japan (remember, US is not the only country in the world 🙂 ) they hear more complaints about NEX.
While in US DSLR ‘pro’ photographers show off their gears, over in Japan, they care more about style. Please don’t underestimate the teen market in Japan. They’re much scarier than the US market. Even in other parts of Asia. Market response in the US tends to be slow, and the strategy American companies use seems to take more time to analyze and respond to market response too.
I don’t think Sony is going to release a firmware update for the A33/A55 cameras soon. They’re more focused in developing, selling and upgrading the NEX Line for amateur photographers. That’s why they release an A-Mount camera and forget about it.
Not exactly. It’s just part of the development cycle. You don’t generally fix what you just release immediately. You cycle things through so ‘everything gets equal amount of attention’
I won’t defend Sony in this, because I’m still annoyed by the lack of A7xx/A7x, but this is the development strategy where they put different amount of efforts for different models at different time.
Oh, and one thing we should remember. I’ll throw this out there for anyone to rebutt me, but CaNikon has more DSLR engineers than Sony (incl their Minolta engineers), though they might have more chip engineers.
If you want Sony to improve, support them, not complain 🙂 It’s part of human nature that we think high of ourselves so we complain and complain and complain, expecting the other party to listen, but we’re not being supportive of them.
I’m not saying everyone is like that, but I know I am like that. It takes time, so all I can say is don’t worry 😀 If you don’t like Sony, leave them. Just don’t hope too much otherwise you’ll be disappointed :\
Only time will tell. If Sony doesn’t release a firmaware update for the A33/A55 by the end of this year that will mean they are not working in the Alpha line as hard as they’re doing with the Nex line.
oscar, how do you arrive at that conclusion. What software bugs are you aware of that:
a) require a firmware update, and
b) can even be remedied by a firmware update?
Personally, I’ve say that not getting a firware update just a few months after release is a good thing as it indicates the camera was tested properly and not rushed out (as the NEX clearly was).
If You buy new software product, new update could come every week.
For example Sony is taking their time even with Vegas software updates although there are many bugs reported…
I would like to become a beta tester to have access to more advanced updates and features which are not available to public yet. They should probably hire some of Us and give us tools to report bugs and configure every aspect of camera. for example tester13 tool which is not good for beginner but advanced user profits greatly.
acolyte – I half agree. Actually I think complaining is good but there is a difference between complaining and whining and far too often on Sony sites we get a lot of the latter.
I see the difference is how realistic is the gripe and how emotive is the language. I think that if people could imagine they were in the room with the Sony management, instead of locked away anomomously typing in the privacy of their own homes, they would be a lot more measured, realistic and helpful and their complaints might actually get heard.
Sony is a company. They do what brings $$$ to them. The reasony they are working hard with nex is because it doea bring profit to them. And from the market responses in asian countries, they might have thought nex line up has more potential than alpha line ups. It’s because consumer, us, responsed to sony with complaints only, noy by supporting them. Companies seek money, not someone who only “talks” with their little keyboard. I’m completely with acolyte.
What’s stupid is that you even think A55/A33 need a FW upgrade!!! before they are even out. Sony added apeture control for video on Nex. A55/A33 already has that function! No one even knows why Sony would release FW for A55/A33. For what?
I would like to RAW conversions compared to A580 and A700.
ok, you MAKE BELIVE me that simple soft changes for 3 buttons in 3 month is not less than excellent marketing stile 🙂
The A55 is my new baby.
