        1. Even F/2 wouldn’t be small. Perhaps F/2.8 would be in somewhat acceptable size, but it’d still make camera very nose-heavy. I’d be more inclined to bet at f/4 as the one that somewhat balances decently with A7.

    1. +85

Since the rumor late last year the 85mm has mysteriously disappeared. In general I would like to see a lot more tele primes. Enough already with all primes below 60mm, release some 60, 70, 85 and 105mm primes for E-mount!

  1. Ok, my Japanese is not great, but… the first Zeiss in Japanese seems to be the wide angle. The second, no idea. The G lens is a macro.

  2. Exciting times! When that wide-angle zoom comes out (assuming it’s up to par), I will jump in. The cameras look fantastic and once the system fills in with more lenses, this will be a great small system!

  3. I want the A7r for landscape photography, but there seems to be no roadmap for any high-quality wide-angle primes from Zeiss. Will we ever see a 21mm or 18mm OTUS or TOUIT lens for the FE mount and optimized for the new 36mp sensor?

    1. If they made lenses for the APS-C NEX, they will certainly make something for the FF too. Meanwhile it will be either rangefinder or DSLR wide primes.

    2. I doubt they are going to make the Otus for the E-mount any time soon. They would make it for the A-Mount before that. When they do, just get the converter.

  4. was really hoping they would have a nicer lens lineup at launch ? this seems to be Sony though

release body in 2013 lens that folks want in 2015 ?
IF they had a 35,50,85 1.4-1.8 range primes ready to go at launch

    was excited but will pass

        1. Yep, they should all be 1.2, made out of titanium, pancakes and cheaper and better than Canikon’s cheapest offerings.

          1. Even f/1.8 is a joke now? f/1.8 is the new f/1.4 in my eyes. Modern sensors allow much better low light performance nowadays, and the paper-thin DOF of an f/1.4 is very rarely a requirement of most photographers.

  5. Andrea, i asked it already in the previous thread – so the 70-200 f4 is a G and not a Zeiss. Any info on pricing? And – any chance that lens gets adapted for the A-mount?

  6. I have to say that I’m very disappointed with Sony’s latest offerings. I like the NEX7 design and think that the retro throwback design of their latest models is weak and uninspiring.

It had been said that they were going to redesign the NEX FF model completely and start afresh but all I can see is something alike a 1970’s Practica or Leicaflex.

Sorry Sony but I think that I’m likely to sell all my remaining Sony gear and go elsewhere as I don’t like the direction you’re going in. This is quite a strong statement for me to make as I was one of the original group of people who shot with the earliest A and E series models and had hoped to progress with Sony.

    1. Agree – I’ve been a Nex advocate from the start as I think the SLR concept is redundant for many users. What do Sony do? SLR-ize the Nex range with faux 1960s style pentaprisms, larger handgrips, ‘motordrive’ style add-ons, and big zooms.

Where’s the stylish lightweight Leica style camera & lenses (at bargain prices) many photographers are looking for? A slightly larger NEX – or RX1 body – with integral viewfinder – that fits easily in a small bag/jacket pocket – not a small DSLR wanabee.

If I want the style of a DSLR – with the drawbacks of increasing size or weight – I’ll buy one … or use the ones I already own. Thats why I got into Nex.

OK – Fuji’s turn … perhaps they can deliver the Leica killer!

      1. Design will always be a subjective matter so I can’t disagree with you here, but the thing I appreciate about the NEX line, and even the latest e mount cameras, A3000 included, is that they are ure to give you an excellent grip for its small size. Size and portability will always be a major attraction to this class of camera, but if it’s not comfortable to hold then shooting with it, for me at least, would not be an enjoyable experience and I most likely wouldn’t use it or take it with me places as often as I currently do with my 5n. Point being, I do really like the Fuji design language and if you’re going for a more “pure” retro throwback versus Sony’s idea of retro, then it works. The only problem with keeping that retro purity is that the camera basically has no grip and it feels like you’re shooting with a bar of soap.

And as far as the A7 being a mock DSLR, I can see that of course, but as we know how large the FE lenses are, I couldn’t imagine carrying a camera around that is so uncomfortably small and front heavy for extended periods of time if it didn’t have a sizable grip.

Again, design matters will always be subjective, but I can definitely agree with you and the above poster that I was really hoping for a FF NEX7, not this new design. But if the performance is there, I guess I can go along with it.

      2. Very few people would by a non AF body which is the only way you would get the lens sizes that you are looking for on a FF body.

    2. A7 design is practically RX-1 + permanent EVF. You can blame “no-EVF-no-buy” moaners for this ugly design choice.

      1. No you can’t. Nobody told them they’d have to start with an RX1 design, and nobody told them to put the damn EVF into a fake pentaprism. It would’ve been perfectly practical using the enlarged NEX 7 design as rumored, it was even prototyped, but finally they still went for the fugly approach.

        1. Oh, come on! It’s Sony. They wouldn’t be themselves if some things on a camera wouldn’t be completely f*** up. And my guess is that we just start to explore problems with these bodies. Just wait for some reviews 🙂

          1. Ugh, I guess you’re right, having bought about a dozen Sony products, there’s something wrong with practically every one of them come to think of it.

    3. I do dislike the visual part somewhat, but I don’t see the hump as a problem. I am more annoyed about not having the two dials on the back like on the NEX-7 and the shutter button on the grip.

    4. It is sad to say, but given the fact that Sony just again threw another standard on the market I think my old A-mount equipment is soon to die. Why I think so? They now produce an E-Mount full-frame and call it Alpha. That pretty much mixes up everything they had in their portfolio so far. A-mount belonged to Alpha and this traditionally was the semi-pro/ pro equipment. E-mount belonged to NEX and this was the fancy creative stuff. Now the new full-frame is called Alpha 7 but it has an E-mount and looks like an inbetween DSLR and toy camera. How would they call the successor of Alpha 77 now? NEX 7000? I’m joking but it is true: they are mixing up everything in their brands.
I’m just about upgrading my Alpha equipment, but I can’t see any offer now. Might be after 20 years I really quit the Minolta path now.

      1. Actually, NEX was part of the Alpha line from the start, all of Sony’s ILCs are Alphas, it’s naming an E-mount product starting with an “a” you should be worrying about.

  7. Why can’t Sony get that a roadmap without any specifications is nearly useless to most people ? “Zeiss fast prime lens” doesn’t mean anything to me. What does “fast” mean ? f1.2 ? f1.4 ? f2 ? And what focal length will it be ? 24 ? 28 ? 35 ? 40 ? 45 ? 85 ? 100 ? 135 ? 2 000 000 ? Are they living in such a thickly protected bubble that they can’t look at what some of their competitors did ? In early 2012 Fuji announced their roadmap for 2012 – 2013. Guess what ? All lenses were properly specified. This gives confidence in the future of a system and helps people plan their purchase or transition from one system to another.

    1. Yep. It’s very easy for Sony to just come and state something like “We’re releasing 95832930 lenses until 2015. But there are no specs. We have no idea what we are doing. LOL!!111!!!”

    2. It is still day one though, and we already know the specs for 5 lenses and a rough idea of 3 more. All roadmaps change, would it be better if they write some specs and then switch them one month before release?

      1. The Fuji roadmap didn’t change (or only for the better – the 56mm f1.4 became a f1.2, and the 23mm got a clickable focus ring), and didn’t have to because it had all the necessary lenses in the first place.

Anyway, if Sony could at least come up with something like “portrait lens around 85mm and faster than f2”, “Wide angle 24mm at least f2.8”, that would already be a good start.

Now if it were another brand perhaps I wouldn’t be so demanding. But Sony has shown pretty poor judgement when it comes to designing a lens lineup and I have zero trust in them to come up with the right lenses. The current FE lineup, to me, is an OKayish start (although I’m personally not interested in any of them really), but not OK enough for me to start trusting Sony.

    3. Fast generally means f/2.8 or faster – this goes back to the “good old days”, when lenses with such apertures were not affordable to most people.

  8. The greatest mistery for me is why the new Sony A7/r opted for OSS and not IBIS. The A-mount users can use their lensesc via adapter but they won’t have any form of stabilization which in 2013 is totally crap. Sony has no regards for old customers. They want to make new users only! Really stupid marketing!

    1. Maybe they want force customers to buy 2 cameras: one with IBIS to use A-mount lenses and one without IBIS to use E-mount lenses.

    1. A desaster, I tried 3 times to order the camera and the 35mm prime, no way. I guess we have to wait for amazon or some reliable other webshop…

      1. I managed to order it upon the third attempt and pay with PayPal. It didn’t take my credit cards. Maybe the amount was too high.

  9. 70-200 f/4 will be white? Not that’s interesting. I thought A7 users wanted to avoid being “flashy” – this was one of the major arguments for buying it – discrete gear setup.

    1. i think any kind of “discreetness” is thrown out the window when using a large lense to begin with. so why not just make it white like their a mount telephoto zooms.

      1. At least with a black lens you don’t stand out and you’re still pretty discrete at night. Using a white lens is saying:”Hey! Look over here! Do a pose for me because my lens is expensive!”
        Useful in Chinese auto exhibitions.

    1. sony also aware of the phenomenon that so many people think they will dumb the A-mount, so they just keep on emphasizing they’re not gonna abandon A-mount… just like today’s announcement and “sgnl by sony”…

    1. Though they are not small or AF for that matter 🙂 but Samyung make a native E-mount 24mm,35mmand 85mm all F1.4 OR f1.5 for the video optimized models. I cant speak for the 24mm or 85mm but the 35mm F1.4 delivers excellent results on my D800 {so good in fact I sold my Nikon 35mmF1.4 saving quite a bit of cash.

      http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare-Camera-Lenses/Compare-lenses/%28lens1%29/359/%28lens2%29/405/%28brand1%29/Samyang/%28camera1%29/792/%28brand2%29/Nikkor/%28camera2%29/792

  10. I hope Fuji can come out with a Fullframe Camera soon enough so I can use their nice superfast primes like 35mm f1.4, I really dont understand why Sony doesnt understand the value of a good Lens lineup.

          1. Careful, he may morph into a troll and come back to you with torches and needles while you sleep.

  11. Wish there was a budget-line EF lenses.

Sure you can use other lenses using adapters, but having AF is always a good thing.

    Would instabuy an A7 + 24/35/50/85mm 1.8 (Non-Zeiss)

    1. Well hopefully we can count on Sigma for some nice budget lenses. They’re arguably currently producing the best lenses on the planet when it comes to price/performance.

    2. An $800 AF Zeiss is as budget as you would ever get from that brand.

Now, Sony knows that this is a flagship system and the launch of mostly Zeiss branded lenses means that they want this to be seen seriously, and seriously means Zeiss, and Zeiss means $$$. In the future, I am sure, Sony will cover the budget side of lenses.

In the meantime, however, why not enjoy those old Contax C/Y lenses? or the old M mount lenses? or the CV lenses? or the FD lenses? or anything else you could possibly want at the price of no AF but hell…this is the middle class man’s Leica!

      1. Looking at the roadmap, all these grey lines will be Sony lenses (not Zeiss and not G), so there definitely will be cheaper offerings in a year.

  12. All seems mid class F/4 lenses. But as long as higher end A mount lens is usable via adapter then it is actually quite good. But I fear that A mount will only built as pro gear nowadays. Hope there is still new mid class lens for A mount in the future.

    1. The pricing of the bodies is already considerably better than anyone would have thought! What do you want? Everything for nothing?

      1. So what will happen to the NEX line? These cameras are very impressive, but there is no getting around the big lenses. Will Sony continue to make e-mount APS-C cameras and lenses? I waited and waited and finally bought in to the NEX system last year. I like it, and was hoping to upgrade to the NEX 7 successor or something similar. Is that still going to happen, or are all the higher end offerings going to be full frame?

        1. I don’t understand why there is always a panic when Sony releases a particular line of products. Just because it has released some full frame bodies and lenses, it does not mean there will be no more APS-C products.

There will be an NEX-7 successor in some shape or form. It might not be placed in the 7 series (maybe that is FF only now), and you might find it is a improved mishmash of the NEX-6 and NEX-7, but you can bet it will arrive at some point.

  13. Please !!! a Bokeh killer like 85mm 1.4 and or 135mm (the rumored Sigma 135mm f1.8 with IS will be the best lens ever in the world. The canon 135mm f2 is a killer, imagine with new sigma quality, IS and f1.8 !!!!!!!! PLEASE RELEASE on FE mount !

And a 16-35…. for landscape and video.

I will buy FE mount when sony release :

    A portrait lens
    A UWA lens
    A IBIS body . . . (for video)

BTW I am a bit sad that the video is only 28mbps … They said improved video my ass. uncompressed hdmi is not an improvement. Who cares about puting huge accessories and external recorders on a body which is suppose to be small and pocketable ?
IBIS and better bitrate please !

    1. You want to buy A-mount camera.
Zeiss 135 f/1.8 is already the best prime in a world 🙂 Sigma will have a VERY hard time beating it!

  14. Dude, you are way too picky. You want a map to tell you where you are going?!?!?

Seriously, come back to reality. Maps are for looking at pretty random lines.

  15. I am quite disenchanted with the A7 and part of the lens setup.

Regarding the lens setup I don’t mean the availabilities. I am aware of the fact that they need to judge success prior investing in development.

The 35 and the 55 have no OSS (maybe due to IQ reasons), but the 35 is at least one stop to slow.

The A7(R) bodies are for sure a great piece of engineering, but the design does meet my taste. It should have been more close to the nex7 design. Why putting the EVF back to the middle – left side was perfect on the nex7.

They enlarge the nex7 design, but didn’t make it large enough to “eat” the FM500 battery. Expected battery power with the FW50 is ridiculous. And likely part of reason, why the cs is just 5fps.

And if the shutter noise in the video is the real sound than I say “no thanks”.

    1. Still no electronic shutter option? I can’t guess any reason other than these people are dim. They’ve displayed that pretty well with the fugly glued-together body already.
I hope the slow 35/2.8 would mean that a 35/1.4 is in development.
They should’ve just made a new battery for this series, why does the battery have to be compatible with half frame bodies anyway?

  16. Admin, would you be able to find out which existing E lens is good for the FF coverage? if some how the 18-105 f4 can do, i will be over the moon. 😀

    1. None of them are. Most certainly: Not any zoom.
As far as I’m aware only some of A-mount primes cover Full Frame (like 50 f/1.8 DT – supportingly it’s only APS-C lens, but works just fine with FF – even vignetting isn’t horrible, some of Canon zooms got worse vignette than this one baby!)

  17. Thats got to be the most vague and useless roadmap ever…

Why not put a few more of those gray bars int 2016-2017…

  18. I have been playing the waiting game, waiting for the right moment to strike and get my new A-mount body.

I have waited through the A580, the A33/55, the A77/99…need live view, won’t buy SLT, don’t like a mirror, will only buy FF, need pivoting screen.

The next generation is my last hope, after that I won’t be able to wait any longer. It will either be a FF mirrorless w/live view and pivoting screen, or I will have to make some sort of compromise decision, either a different Sony or another system entirely.

Yes, I have been “enjoying my photography” along the way, but the waiting has become almost unbearable. That’s what it feels like with Sony…always a waiting game. They always seem to just miss the mark somehow.

  19. This system is compromised by using not optimized for short flange A7′ sensor from the very start. Not interested at all.

  20. Sony should forget about FF NEX lenses, all the reaction so far on the net is “yeah interesting if a bit cheaper somewhere to put my lenses with an adaptor”

Sony are not going to sell many FF lenses at all, they shouldn’t even bother just sell the body to people who want to buy it.

      1. I live in the real world..people are not interested in what Sony are offering lenses wise, not even remotely (most comments are saying too big, too slow too expensive)

Forget E Mount as a system it has not a hope in hell of ever being that
E mount is a place to put other lenses and that’s where it’s appeal is, nothing more nothing less.

Sony are simply wasting money developing lenses few will ever buy

        1. Maybe you’re not interested in Sony lenses, but many people will be. The biggest complaint with NEX was that there wasn’t enough native lenses. If people didn’t want Sony lenses, those complaints wouldn’t have been made.

You’re just being negative, but then you always are.

          1. I’m being real here. Sony have lost reality for lens prices lately (not just E mount) and people can dream all they want about a great UWA lens for this, but with the lens so close to the sensor it’s going to be very hard to get good performance esp at the wider angles.

The natural attraction is to pick up a body and dig around the huge number of lenses out there for something appealing. There is no need to even consider any Sony lenses, they’re big, heavy and slow all the ones shown are monsters. People want small and compact, and they will get that with MF gems on ebay for a fraction of the price, add your adaptor and off you go.

Don’t think for one moment most folks are even slightly interested in Sony’s overpriced big slow lenses.

  21. Inexpensive, mirrorless full-frame body is great…
but it seems completely contradictory to match it with zeiss lenses, which are known for being large, expensive, and conservatively slow despite performing well optically.

The only reason the 35 & 55 zeiss is so threatening is because it means Sony is unlikely to release similar focal lengths at same/faster apertures at more affordable prices.

Sigma/Canikon’s 35/2, 40/2.8, 50/1.4, 85/1.8 glass all have very respectable performance and faster/cheaper despite not having a blue badge.

  22. Canon 6D with 40mm and 24-105 L needing a small bag ( around £1900) vs A7 + 35mm + 24-70mm needing a smaller bag but bigger cash £2400. Can’t get head around why people are wanting to preordering A7 setup at the moment – It’s a no brainer for me. Correct me if I’m wrong

  23. Ok, so I’m very interested in getting the A7, but Sony has made it pretty much impossible for me to afford because of the lens situation. I’m not a professional photographer. I cannot spend thousands on lenses right off the bat. I shoot a lot of high school sports (volleyball and basketball), but I cannot afford the $3000 28-200 lens. The kit 28-70 will not offer the range I need, but it may have to be it for me to start.

I know I can use other lenses (Canon, Sony A mount, etc…) with an adapter, but I’m concerned about image quality loss, focus speed, etc… Can someone offer some insight into how an adapter will affect those things? Also, if I’m trying not to break the bank and acquire a couple extra lenses, should I go for Canon with an or Sony A mount lenses?

    Thank you.

    1. Ahhh!!! I just realized that Sony A mount lenses don’t have IS built in, so a longer range zoom is going to suffer without it.

  24. There is some talk that the existing Sony/Zeiss SEL24F18Z E mount 24 mm / f1.8 lens currently marketed for APS C sensors does in fact have an image circle suitable for full-frame sensor — That it was designed all along for FF
Has anyone tried this lens on the A7?

I’ve been using this lens on NEX-7 and would like to keep it for use on A7R in NON-CROP mode.

      1. Hi Scott,

Yes I do; also indoors low-light fast shots. I’ll try the Zeiss 24mm-f/1.8 APS C lens as soon as I get my A7R (hoping early December) but would love to hear from anyone else who has already tried the experiment.

I strongly considered purchasing a Canon 24mm-f/1.4 lens but was deterred by the Canon EF-to-Sony E adaptor electronics situation. Existing adaptors appear to have trouble autofocussing; and require lens mount to change modes. Also, firmware updates require factory returns ! Really?? in 2013!! Too much errata and uncertainty for my taste.

Sony to their great credit have placed their E-mount interface in public domain. If Canon (whose all-electronic EF lens interface actually pre-dated Sony’s) would only do so also!

I’ve been a Sony user since NEX-5 days — I feel that much of the future is in the electronics arena (sensors, processors, electronic viewfinders, etc.) — but am dissatisfied with their sparse lens offerings. The days of flipping mirrors and moving prisms are/should be past. Sony! Please offer an EF fast wide-angle prime lens for the A7 and future cameras. Hopefully, the A7 series will catapult Sony forward and motivate enlargement of their lens library.

    1. Given the strong vignetting of that lens on APS-C, it’s very unlikely that rumor is true. On dpreview they compare 24mm full frame vs 24mm aps-c. They don’t say which lens, but, it’s most likely the 24/1.8 since they are demonstrating the A7’s behavior and it would be the easiest comparison to make.

You can see there’s nothing close to full frame coverage if it is indeed the E 24/1.8 http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sony-alpha-7-7r/

      1. Unfortunately, the three-way image on dpreview is now inoperative … only the first (FF lens + A7 camera) image is viewable.
I believe the only Sony APS-C 24mm lens of either A or E mount is the Zeiss f/1.8.
Possibly they’re using a non-sony lens for the full-frame shot?

        1. Thanks, Zachary … I now see the three comparison shots. If as you suggest the APS-C lens is the Zeiss E-mount 24mm f/1.8, it’s unuseable without cropping!

      2. Interesting that the shots of the FF lens on FF; and the uncropped APS-C lens on FF appear to be exactly the same, except that there is the vignetting on the APS-C case.
I would have expected some cloud or angle-shift, etc. if in fact lenses were exchanged.
Perhaps the photos are illustrative only and created by Photoshopping a fixed scene.

  25. So I think most can agree that the A7r is a landscape photographer’s dream camera at this point. HOWEVER, there’s no true wide angle prime lens available? Does anybody know if one will be made, otherwise I won’t be buying one.

  26. since I shoot interiors and need an ultra wide zoom lens it’s hard to justify the purchase without such lenses available.
any suggestion on what should I get to use an ultra wide with the A7 via adapters with autofocus?

  27. I’m not worried by sony’s lack of full frame lenses. The wonderful thing about the Emount is the third party support from lens makers such as Sigma,Tamaron, and Samyang. Its only a matter of time before Sigma releases a fast 35mm and 50mm for full frame e mount.

  28. I’m somewhat puzzled by Son’y game plan. The first two lenses many journalist and pro photogs buy are a 24-70 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8. They are not even on Sony’s road map. My only hope is that Tamron will turn their pretty good offerings into FE mount lenses. Will they be compatible with Sony’s subject tracking / “Eye AF” etc? That is the question.

  29. Maybe a late question. But anybody heard of a 135 mm E-mount f.1,8 lately, or maybe a Za 135 mm f.1,8 mk II
