I can’t decide whether to wait for a5000 or not… This is a great deal!
Any suggestions?
What are your needs?
I have rather limited needs, as I’m still very new to photography.
I’m also very geeky, so the prospect of NFC, Wifi, and extra MP is extremely enticing to me.
Well, I believe it is a good idea to get a camera that will let you grow and if you are geeky, for me that means that you will enjoy experimenting with it. Both the 3N and A5000 look limited to me and I’d suggest you look at a NEX-6 or a NEX-5T. The 3N and the A5000 don’t have some video options as the latter two and have worse LCDs, which I find more important than some 4MPs. This is of course only my opinion.
Agreed 🙂 Experimenting is the best word for it! The 5T certainly is a great option in that regard. In fact, the a5000 is somewhat confusing to me, because it’s the same price as the 5T. From your experience, would I miss much with 16MP instead of 20MP? I love to shoot nature, landscape, and spherical panoramic photos.
I shoot landscapes too and I have the NEX-7. While I don’t print often, I print big when I do and also use my prime lenses as short zooms, i.e. I crop (although I didn’t choose that camera just for the sensor, but mostly for the interface). For the most part, it is a small difference and I am talking here about 24MP vs 16MP. To give you a better visual idea of the dimensions of the files, see the following graphic:

Don’t worry, the difference between 16MP and 20MP is negligible. It’s even hard to prove scientifically once they’ve brought into some kind of ‘viewing form’, i.e. printed, displayed on a monitor etc. For instance if you are just viewing stuff on your PC monitor which is probably ultraHD at best, there is no way you can tell apart 16 from 20 as both are way higher res than ultraHD.
As Vlad already pointed out, a much more noticeable difference is the monitor res. If you want touch, take the 5. The 5n is the only one with a capacitive screen if you care about such things. If you don’t need touch, go for the F3. It’s got the same 921k res on the LCD unlike the other 3 series bodies and it takes an optional electronic view finder, again unlike all other 3 series bodies. All later bodies (3n, A5000) are technically downgrades so beware.
Most of your subjects can be covered with the kit lens. For spherical panos the Samyang 8mm 2.8 is the best solution. Or rather, the only one. But nevertheless a good one.
That is a great deal.
Same price at B&H, at least for Black
why is it so cheap?
Does it have manual controls in video?
Is the sensor better than in the NEX5?
My local best buy a couple days ago had two open box nex kits: a nex 6 with 16-50 for $383 and a nex3n with 16-50 but no battery for $180. It was hard not to buy both and put them on eBay. Wish I wanted a nex camera.
If I saw that I would have gotten as many as I could. With ebay you basically would have paid almost nothing for the camera you decided to keep.
I forgot to hit reply there.
One other thing, i would have bought it in a heartbeat if I wanted a nex camera to keep. No doubt, it’s the cheapest I’ve ever seen a nex 6 kit for sale. I just don’t want one. They offered 10% off any open box items that day too
I thought about it. But figuring in sales tax, then the eBay fees to sell then the PayPal fees to collect….it just isn’t worth my time to fool with it really. I could have maybe made $100 bucks total buying both and selling them. But it isn’t worth the aggravation and dealing with someone wanting to return it cause they’re not happy…blah blah. I just wish I could have found something besides nex for those kinds of discounts. Maybe an iMac:)
The power zoom lens sell for $348 alone at Amazon.com.
