UPDATE: Strange Student(?) poll hints a launch of a completely new mirrorless system camera.

Sony

UPDATE: It seem liks a Student and not Sony(!) launched that new survey at the University of Amsterdam: uvacommscience.qualtrics.com. So this is no relevant news anymore. Anyway, just for the record:

They ask many question. And once they go in detail with a camera proposal:

Sony is considering the introduction of a new model of Mirrorless Digital Camera at the price of 1300€.
This new camera will be the first model of an entire new producline Mirrorless Digital Cameras priced at the same point of Sony’s Mirrorless Digital Cameras price range, which fluctuates from 400€ to 2300€.
The new model will be named ”PicYou” and will include models for both amateur and professional photographers. A wide range of lenses and accessories will be available as well. Sony PicYou will provide to the users exactly the same quality features of current Sony’s Digital Mirrorless Cameras.

If it’s a student than for sure there will be no such new system 🙂

  1. PicYou is exactly the jargon consultants would use. I suppose they just want to evaluate possibilities e.g. what would be the features that will attract or detract people.

  2. There’s always been room for an a700/a77 level camera in the NEX system. Something with a fast 1/8000s shutter like the flagship cameras, and a fast sync speed of 1/250s. How about an A7000 with a fast silent shutter and 5-axis image stabilization?

  3. Why would this be a Sony survey and not some grad student project? (maybe a MBA student familiar with Sony?) It just looks like a runup to NEX back in the day

  4. an A7000S 12mp APSC super 35mm Slog2 XAVC 300mbps 4k and 100mbps 1080p intra frame. This is what users wants from a real camera

  5. Mirrorless A-Mount for sure, otherwise there could not be “A wide range of lenses and accessorries”.

  6. everytime you think you might be relatively up to date about sony’s intentions, something comes along to smack you across the face… damn. interesting though. either theyre genuinely 10 steps ahead, or its a hint they just wobble around constantly struggling to find their way.

  7. “A wide range of lenses and accessories will be available as well.” …….

Could possibly point to an ‘A’ mount mirror-less ???

  8. Is this a joke? Fake?
Can someone have made that up or is it genuinely coming from Sony?

      1. Possibility is this a camera more for young people. A cam for selfies, photos of friends, Instagram/ Facebook upload. And, this is new, with the cam can the user make other photos like landscape, macro aso…

  9. This can’t be a focus group survey, because the sample isn’t a focus group (and although I don’t know the contents of the survey, I don’t believe it might be a focus group-type survey).

Secondly, the excerpted text looks nothing like what Sony might be planning, if common sense is applied.

  10. Looks like an experiment (behavioural sciences duh) and not a real Sony questionnaire. Student probably chose Sony since he’s a fan.

  11. As long as it will have true 14 bit raw files finally without any shitty compression (11+7 bit files of sonys cams), crippling full frame sensors stupidly/unnecessarily even worser than mft cams with 12 bit raw files……e.g. olympus/panasonic….

  12. Could this be Sony’s new line of 4/3 ILC? Sony produces lots of 4/3 sensors and there were also some rumors about Sony them it in RX cameras after all. And there really exists “wide range of lenses and accesories” for 4/3 cameras out there! It makes me think Sony sees future in combination of smaller 4/3 mirrorlesses and bigger full-frame ones. What about APS-C though?

  13. Maybe a fake info from a student which wanted to make the buzz, unless this Kiki Graviilidou belongs to Sony company ( found one which works in Pocket Media B.V, which is a Mobile Advertising company)… maybe one more fake 😉

  14. I hope it’s just a misguided social experiment by this university. If it was from Sony, it would be hosted by sony.com. Unless this is mirrorless A-mount, it’s doomed. What Sony needs is to finish the E-mount lineup. People are choosing MFT and Fuji because of the limited native lens selection. I would prefer more small lenses for the a6000, like the size of the kit lens, but quality primes. Or anything that utilizes existing mounts.

I think they took it down. The link requires a login. I think it was intended for internal use only.

  15. I don’t think it’s mirrorless A-mount; sony would simply provide an updated adapter in LAEA style and that’s it. Since they made some M4/3 sensor (was on a list posted earlier here at SAR), this might be a hint for such a new system in best case… and if they keep compatible in mount, there is a wide range of accessories.

But I agree with most comments here, this sound more like a university experiment and not a Sony-driven survey…

  16. “The following research is part of my master thesis at university of amsterdam.” Its some student’s master thesis, imaginery poll, not actually taken by sony. Lol

    1. The student operating this survey posted about it on Photo.net, asking people to take part. It was posted at http://photo.net/casual-conversations-forum/00dJ2y but it seems a moderator has deleted the thread. Here is the original post by the student on Photo.net:

Online Anonymous Survey for Mirrorless Digital Cameras

      Kiki Gavriilidou , May 23, 2015; 07:48 p.m.

Hello, I would like to ask your help by participating in this research. This survey is part of my Masters Thesis and it is about Mirrorless Digital Cameras. This research aims to register your responses which will be used for future innovation in Digital Cameras’ industry.

  17. Exactly the same quality features implies we are talking about a name change only.
If the new line of cameras were to indeed have a wide range of lenses and accessories that would possibly imply a new on sensor autofucus system that is fully compatable with dslr lenses as well as mirrorless lenses, and that allows use of Canikon lenses via adapters.
The name PicYou implies that you have the option to pick what lenses you put on the camera rather than being limited to the ones Sony picks for you.
Perhaps othe accessories such as flash could also be made more universal.
Such a move would be necessary in order to compete once Canon and/or Nikon introduce professional level ff mirrorless cameras that accept thier current lens lines.
Nikon is expected to introduce a proffesional level ff mirrorless F mont camera the end of this year or begining of next year, and Canon expects to dominate the mirrorless camera market by end of 2016.
So there is little doubt that there is going to be some serious new mirrorless competition ahead.
When Canon and Nikon enter this competition it will be in a big way….I am not talking about just continuing existing mirrorless lines, but all new lines and major promotional campaigns to go with them.
Sony cannot compete against professional level mirrorless competition that uses Canikon glass unless thier mirrorless system also is fully compatable with Canikon glass.

    1. PicYou cameras could have a large very solidly attached exchangeable mount that could have electronics and mechanical linkages built in. Mechanical linkages if needed could be powered by small motors in the mounting plate…such as Nikon diaphram or older A mount screw mount, this way the camera itself would only have electronic connections that would be converted to thier end use by the lens specific mounting plate
A differrent PicYou mounting plate can be made for each brand of lens.
Sony could possibly also make the PicYou base open format ,allowing other manufacturers to use it…similar to what Arca Swiss did.
E mount would not be built into the camera, but rather be one of the available mounting plates
As I suggested earlier, these mounting plates would be larger than the actual mount and secured in a more rigid manner than current mount adapters…so people would not complain about flimsy adapters.

    2. Again your post is full of well, lets call them assumptions that you like very well.
lets look at the “universal lens mount” that you predict. To make it simple for you, this lens mount is physicly impossible, not only have you to deal with a lot of different flangedistances, electronic connections, AF protocols etc, but also do you have to fight some legal departments for the patents the different manufacturers have. In the end you will end up with a camera with a few adapters and slower AF performance then the lenses have on their own cameras.

You tell that when Canon and Nikon come with their mirrorless FF cameras that
Sony will get into trouble, well lets put it this way, the same was said when Nikon and Canon entered the mirrorless APS-C (and for Nikon 1″) market. Sony would be distroyed, but Sony did do a lot better after the EOS-M and the Nikon 1 series came out, as people understood that the big two were not as dedicated to the mirrorless market as Sony is…
And when Canon and/or Nikon comes with a FF mirrorless camera, that camera will be very large (when it can only use original Canikon lenses) or it will have a new mount without a large lens line to use it and an adapter. The adapter will not work as good as the lenses on the original camera and the en is a new mirrorless range from Canikon that will be as populair as their mirorless cameras are now….

      1. A very shortsighted and closeminded response.
Here I have suggested an inovative solution that would benefit all photographers and revelutionalize the photo industry, and you come up with the foolish foolish idea that it is imppossible.
The camera itself only needs electical contacts and a way to attach a plate.
It would have a larger diameter than E mount so there would be enough room for whatever requirement various mounts need.
Not only is this possible but extremely simple.
As for patents…most camera mounts have pattents that have long ago expired, and this camera does not actually use anyones mount, just allows the use of mounting plates..that because the patent would be open..anyone can make..
There are already adapters and accessories available for all lens brands…this is an improvement on that.
As the largest sensor manufacturer Sony benefits by making the system open, because other manufacturers can buy Sony sensors.
This system is by no means unprecedented, as micro 4/3 is already an open system.
Nor is the concept of adapters to various mounts unprecidented, as it is already in common use.
The only unprecidented thing is making a new mirrorless on sensor focus system that is compatable with the slower motors in dslr lenes…fully doable.

      2. You make the rather uncredible assumpion here the the general public will embrace Sony E moint and shun Canon and Nikon ff pro level mirrorless cameras.
Sony is simply not the brand the general public embraces as thier go to camera….and the Canikon mirrorless options, when introduced as a high end competitor, will most deffinitely capture the public interest.
You state yourself they are not yet commited to the mirrorless market ..that is true, and any comparison between thier current mirrorless market testing ..half hearted attempts…and thier future all out major marked high end mirrorless cameras….is total nonsense.

  18. a new camera system sony has only 3 lenses for and all of them are crap.. exactly what sony needs… ROTFL…..

  19. This doesn’t even qualify as a rumour — the grammatical mess not to mention the spelling errors fail to rise even to the level of Japglish …. clearly well below the standards of Sony. A student mock-up for an assignment, nothing more.

Discussing this as if it is a ‘fact’ or even a ‘possibility’ is ludicrous. Come on people — Sony isn’t going to explore their future in the Netherlands among students with this badly constructed and poorly conceived ‘survey’ …

    1. I disagree completely on the Level of Sony’s “japglish”. Have you used any Sony mirrorless products?? Is English your first language? Of all things Sony could be judged on, this is their WEAKEST trait by a long shot. You are giving them a credit they do not deserve whatsoever! Sony releases flagship products wrought with examples of terrible menu wording (I have NEX6, A7R, A7S & A6000) their websites are worse, & the “PlayMemories” apps for iOS and Android are even worse then the websites. I love Sony Cameras but this aspect of their offerings absolutely baffles me time and again. It’s almost as if they have no quality control people in UI/Usability! Or maybe none of them speak adequate English and they are using Google Translate (I find this hard to believe.) That or they simply don’t care… Or no one has told them how laughable and amateurish it makes using their products feel…. But how could they not realize that now?

P.s. all that said, I agree with your 2nd paragraph completely.

      1. I’m uncomfortable being put in the position of defending Sony’s English — but on balance, I think the manuals & websites demonstrate a better English than the referenced student site … And yes, I speak English as my first and essentially only language, which doesn’t make mine perfect but does give pause when something rings false in my ears.

        Cheers!

  20. Now people are discussing fictitious scenarios from a student project as rumors? Facepalm.

Sony conducts market research all the time, and they don’t do it through some student thesis project.

    1. I updated my post. Now I know it was a student and not Sony.
P.S.: That said Sony usually makes polls for real(!) to ask about their system cameras.

      1. Sony does conduct polls, but this is framed as market research, something that’s not made public. This was a miss, but keep up the good work.

  21. Current rumors have proven so unreliable that very little can be believed.
The only credible rumor is the leak that we will see a a7x and a6xxx series camera this quarter.
I expect an a7rii camera only…no a 9 camera and no A mount are coming…I do not believe admins credible sources are very credible at this time.
Logically I do not think the a7rii will be 36mp because this will be Sony’s high resolution model and must compete with Cannon high mp model…I would guess somewhere around 56mp.
I do not believe the 59mp rumors or the 36mp rumors, and I would not expect a 78mp bsi surprise….if sensor shift high res comes, Sony may delay the real high res and we may see this camera as 36mp with high res mode…I hope not, I would prefer real high res and aditional high res mode, wth high res mode firmware upgrades for existng cameras.

I do suspect that a bsi is possible…but I am not going so far as to predict one at this time.

This is my own conjecture…but certainly as likely as any of the current rumors out there.

As for my universal mount compatability prediction….I still believe we will eventually see it in some form, but expect Sony will wait until they believe the competition is forcing them to make the move.

    1. The major camera makers don’t compete with each other. They sorta react slowly. There is no competition from outside of Japan and they all just take their time and do what they have to just to stay relevant. Would not hold my breath for 50+ mp Sony camera any time soon

      1. Especially when you consider that this is arguably Canon’s response to the d8xx and the a7r…

  22. Something like this should not have made it to the website but I understand there is a need for new content

  23. After considering “PlayMemories” and the rest of Sony’s ridiculously contrived naming conventions and menu translations, that was actually the most credible part of the Survey to me.
