Strange humor: Why does Sony add a piece of chees inside the RX1? :)

SAR reader Mark linked me to that great Sony site: http://discover.store.sony.com/be-moved/ It shows you some famous Sony product constructions displayed in a nice interactive way. Now the weird thing is that Sony added a piece of cheese on the Sony RX1. Is it a marketing gag or what?

Let’s see if you can give us an answer 🙂

  1. The cheese is in the RX1 for the same reason there is a woman’s statue in the Playstation controller, chopsticks in the Xperia phone or a lollipop in the QX100.

  2. In the world of Starcraft 2; a “cheese” it’s a movement earlier than the enemies, and if it’s well executed; can make you win. 😉

    1. that’s not the meaning of cheese. cheesing is anything that is a strategy which is relatively lame and/or easy to use while it is very effective to use.

doesn’t have to be starcraft 2, it’s a common term used in mainly RTS games.

        1. no not really. It takes no skill and is just a repetitive move in games that is very frustrating to get over even by skilled players and is borderline cheating. It is almost like exploiting a glitch to win the game and sucks the fun out of games.

  3. Its the latest sony technology.
The cheese is only used during assembly to attract a mouse.
After assembly the mouse runs around inside the camera to provide power.
Sony got tired of listening to sar readers complaining about poor battery life.

  4. RX1 will be difficult to sell when 7R is out, now the need to add a cheese to catch some mice. Which is a major price drop for the set.

  5. I am interested in selling my a900 and NEX 5N (and lenses: 16mm, 18-55, and 55-210 and attachments: flash, evf, microphone, LEA2) to fund an RX10, keeping my A99. Anyone interested can contact me at jlapiana@live.com. I do wish Sony would make an RX10 with APS-C sized sensor though, that would be killer for an always with me camera leaving the a99 for serious work.

    1. My A900 is a life camera.

The EVF cameras are great additions to the camera bag and excel is some tasks but there is a simplicity and quality to the A900 that I would regret giving up.

  6. It’s an RX1R.
It doesn’t have an AA filter.
So they put some cheese there instead to keep it together.
That’s why it’s more expensive than the RX1.

  7. It is obvious, while watching the whole page (“watching” is a weird way to refer to a page, but that’s what it is) that these are not literal, but ‘cute’ bits. I don’t understand the question.

Maybe more specifically the question should be: “How obvious can I (SAR) be before you realize I’m really a Sony Marketing gimmick…”

    1. Well, no shit, sherlock. We all must be dumb as a sack of rocks to be having some fun with this, while your perceptiveness must conjure the obvious, dour cynicism that nobody possibly can.

  8. There is a moment in the animation when you can click a button next to the cheese and get a blurb titled “Small enough to smile at”

  9. Hi Sonians
    I think ;-):
    a. this find piece of xx has yet to come from the land of cheeeese… not Holland you xx its Confederation swiss (origine of the arca swiss)
    b. an in built reason for all the cheesy pics you shoot
    c. to disturb kikonians and cacnions
    d. to disturb sony rumors and sr-readers
    e. first vegetable camera? gecoming Borg?
    f. he missing link?
    g. a bio pre mounted sensor to help the main sensor?
    h. instead of a mouse outside cheese inside? what for?
    i. for every country their well know food: for US big steak to come but how to cut it to fit in?

have you oh know-it-alls-and-discuss-it-to-the-end-of-time any suggestion?
    bye bye from emmental gryere

  10. small enough to smile at … but you don’t normally take people shots with 35mm wide-angle … strange

    1. Why not? I love 35mm portraits as they show people and their slightly blurred surrounding and not just a face and BOKEH

  11. Hi again

It is asian humor: you angush spiiking piple sajs a loot when shooting innosent piktures:

    cheese!

it is that asian people understand you – if the internal sensor get you saying ‘cheese’ so the internal cheese will pop out like the internal flash… 😉

  12. Cheese-powered camera? Hahahaha…

Serious guess – it’s a joke. Those objects were chosen from a random list.

  13. Cheese is used as lubricant. This is the only way you can actually take the fix lens out and put other zeiss lenses.

  14. Because the RX1 is cheesy? Nah, I actually dig the camera. I hope its that all natural imported stinky cheese- my favorite.

  15. I can’t think about cheese right now. I just bought the zeiss 50mm cause I had to finally have it. With the 135mm zeiss and some other lenses I’m balls deep into Sony territory now. Any more camera stuff and I explode.

  16. The cheese was added during final calibration of the distance between sensor and lense. Otherwise the camera may be front or back focused.

  17. I went to the website it was pretty awesome!

Personally I think it means compact with a touch of class and cheesiness?
In the good way! It’s easier much easier to get nice cheese smiles images with a nice 35mm f2 lens and compact body then a huge d800 and 35mm 1.4G.

    1. It might be that the exploded view is set up like a sandwich, or a burger, and the heart of a cheeseburger is cheese. Sony has put in all exploded views a strange object, here they put cheese. Maybe Chuck E Cheese paid for the pictures or made them, hahaha.
It’s after all a funny gag. There is no real meaning to it, to my opinion, except a joke.

  18. Any mold spores are attracted to the cheese instead of to the lens and so it helps to keep the glass clean and clear.

  19. It’s like a EFC/silent shutter – pops up automatically to make sure the whole family are all smiles the instant the photo is taken. No more utterances like “Say cheese!” in quiet places!
