UPDATED: You have been fooled :)

UPDATE: It’s now April 2. Time to say you have been fooled 🙂

This is the Fool news:

After many weeks of work I can finally unveil that Sony is about to launch two new Full Frame cameras based on the same brand new Sony 3 layer sensor (Similar to Foveon tech). On May 1 Sony will unveil the A91 A-mount and the A9 E-mount cameras featuring the 54 Megapixel 3 layer sensor.

3 layer sensor: Every layer captures 18 megapixel. The resolution and color richness is said to be world-class leading. No other camera of the world can nearly match the IQ from those cameras!

AF: The sensor contains 345 phase detection AF points covering 97% of the imaging area.

A and E-mount: The cameras are very similar but the A91 will have on sensor stabilization. The A91 will also be the first A-mount camera that is completely mirrorless and without the SLT mirror!

I have no other specs nor price info yet. But stay tuned!

    1. The point of an April Fool bit of news is that it is unbelievable with a hint of believability. This one works for that reason.

You obviously fell for it and now feel that you have to post that you didn’t. Now THAT is lame!

  1. This is definitely a April Fools Day trick. This kind of technology isn’t going to be within reach for a very long time.

  2. ha! i would have believed it too if i didn’t read the comments…. for a moment there i was thinking about selling my A7 which hasn’t even arrived yet…

  3. I’m still surprised whenever an adult finds it funny and/or thinks he’s accomplished something by ‘tricking’ someone.

  4. Ha ha, happy April’s fool! 🙂 I was thinking that thing was going to be “tha bomb”, but I remembered the date… And Foveon belongs to Sigma, if I remember correctly!

  5. would have been really nice if it weren’t April fools. 🙂 really had me reading the whole article unlike others which at first glance already seam like jokes.

  6. 😀 for a moment i was sooo happy…i’m waiting a new FF sony camera for so long…then i remember the date…it’s not funny any more 🙁 🙁 🙁

  7. Here’s hoping that it will take less than 2 years before we will see a similar message on a day != April 1st.

    1. @Andrea: Don’t be fooled by all those lame “not funny’-sayers. I think it was a hilarious Aprils 1st joke. In particular, because you didn’t exaggerate too much. Specs-wise, such a camera might already launch in 2015 (believing your rumors). For 10 seconds, all I thought was “No! Already! Incredible!”

    1. What would be the point of joking about something that people don’t care about? Playing on people’s hopes and fears is a great way to make a joke!

  8. Yes, this is the best news I’ve had all day!!! I will be first in line to buy one!

Can you please tell me if this will be weather sealed? I hope they can fix the shutter shock too. Ohh my gosh, I’m salivating and counting my pennies. Thank you Sony!!

  9. What I no understand is why A91 can have sensor stabilization but no the A9. I’m a little disappointed on this.

    1. Why would anyone fall for this on April 1st? Today, I read everything on-line and in newspapers with the mindset that it might be a joke. Trying to spot the joke among all the serious news is great fun!

  10. Huehuehue. The amusing part is seeing so many people desperately trying to believe this joke despite how obviously false it is. Against all of their rational being, they are demanding to buy into it. Crazy.

  11. I fear that these a9 and a91 have prohibitive prices and will definitely all on the shelf.

As long as Sony does not decide to throw these pro macchien under $ 500 the market will remain flooded for life.
It is inadmissible to shell out $ 2,500 for the a7r is unacceptable given the low costs of components mother in years

  12. Please, please, please, let these cameras, esp the A mount, have minimal shutter lag whilst using flash. If it has minimal shutter lag, Sony can start winning over journalists, more wedding and event photographers and certainly me with lots of sympathy for Sony’s innovative mindset (as long as they don’t bring too many camera families on the market).

  13. Well, 1st of April… For a few seconds Andrea got me good!
Until I read the date on the left of the number of the comments, in the orange bar.
IF, and I repeat IF, this is gonna be confirmed In the next days, then the stupid grin I usually have when I see (in real life) some high piece of tech that I like, it’s not gonna leave my face for quit some time.
IF it turns out to be true, damn Sony you’re good! 😉

  14. Haha, very funny joke.

This would be a good idea for the future though. Foveon tech seemed to have limitations in the past but its image quality has no equal.

  15. It’s interesting to note that a lot of the tech is already there. Sony has spoken about layered sensors & Sony has already implemented FF mirrorless and IS. Unfortunately it hasn’t all been shoved into one body – yet.

  16. It would be nice if this site like so many could just see past the April 1st phenomena and not post this kind of ridiculous news….and GODDAMNITSONY if you could just make this happen I would sell everything in favour for this….I would be a happy camper and become a new user of this franchise.

Possibly the only camera ever to be used by my hands ever again, hopefully…not exactly a gearhead so I would be compelled to use legacy glas…but still would suffice all my needs…so please Sony with a lot of sugar on top MAKE IT HAPPEN!!! Please!?

  17. If this isn’t an April Fools Day joke, it will be a joke for all those whose lovely Sony lens owners whose lenses are then massively out-performed by the new sensor! The 36mp sensor makes mincemeat out of many lenses … 54mp …!

    1. It would make all NEX-7 owners happy, as it might provide a true upgrade path to NEX-7. 54MP on FF equals 24 MP on APS-C. With that camera, I could put all my APS-C lenses on the new body and still have the same resolution as before. And whenever size doesn’t matter too much, I would carry a FF lens.

  18. (SR5) More A9 spec:

    – rangefinder style (like a slightly bigger a6000)
    – three dials on top: (mode dial, exposure compensation dial, and one unmarked dial under neath shutter)
    – no internal flash
    – same A7R’s 2.4 million dot OLED viewfinder, no pixel increase but refresh rate is now 120fps ( was 60fps)
    – 3 layer full frame sensor.
    – 54 or 18 Megapixel raw size available.
    – weather resistant body
    – firmware now includes 12 A-mount SAM/SSM lenses focusing table data,
can use fast sensor phase detection to focus A-mount lenses via LAEA3 (only SAM and SSM lenses)

    (SR5) One more surprise:
    – new E-mount 16-50mm F2.8 OSS apsc lens coming in September.

  19. There will also be 7-Axis stabilisation. The sensor can shift back in time, if you missed the moment. 🙂

    1. “The sensor can shift back in time, if you missed the moment. :-)”

Now, that IS redefining photography! 🙂

  20. Andrea this is cruel, I know its April Fools Day, but these cameras are expect but not until 2015, maybe the launch date is 1st May 2015!!!

  21. yeah this is actually terrible news, since foveon is absolutely terrible for video with the current tech, I’m glad its April fools

  22. Oberkochen/Germany, 01/04/2014
Due to the huge success of the Zeiss Otus 55mm f1.4 and because of the soon to be announced Sony high megapixel Full Frame cameras Carl Zeiss Group decided to increase their line-up of Otus lenses to a total of ten different lenses from 16mm to 135mm.
These lenses will be available for Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony A and Sony E mounts.

  23. Surely that should be 345 AF phase detect points on each
layer, otherwise only one colour would be in focus! Anyway, I have had a chat with
the techie guy at my local Sony dealership and he says the AF on these two
cameras is so fast they can actually achieve focus before you have removed the
lens cap! He also said the reason there is no SLT mirror in the A91 is because
the build quality of the pre-production camera was so bad the mirror just fell
out of it, and the Sony engineers couldn’t be arsed to put it back in again!
Hope this information is useful to you, lol.

  24. With that specs, you need top range lenses for the body. Hopes it’s not an April fool joke and furthermore, it’s SR5! But I thinks it’s mostly the April fool joke.

  25. Sony cannot sell a Foveon sensor since they do not own that name.
The BARRY SENSOR will actually occur but in 2015 not 2014.
Other than that this rumor seems reasonable.

    1. I guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow for the real SR5 bombshell of a new Sony mount to excite the ‘small and light’ e-mount fanatics. A body the size of a postage stamp. The only downside is you need a pair of tweezers to change lenses. ;^)

  26. We can be sure this is a joke because SAR no longer posts specs more than 2 days ahead of official Sony anouncements.

  27. Rumor sites should not participate in April Fools jokes. They turn out to be wrong half the time anyway – it’s like April 1 all year round.

  28. Nice one, Mr. SonyAlphaRumours, the best of the day, so far. 😀
Actually, for a millisecond I almost believed the story. Mostly because I so wanted something like that to be true, not because it was so plausible. 🙂
A Sony mirrorless camera with a Foveon style sensor, that’s a killer combo. Hopefully some day it will be a real SR5 story here.

  29. SAR in order to improve credibility and produce more sr5 postings will now only post specs in thier entirety directly from published manuals.
Next monday SAR will post full specifications for the new Sony A100 camera.

  30. Wow. My first thought was about how to convince my wife to let me get this, so soon after the a7R. Glad it is only a joke.

  31. As a huge Sony fan, who also owns a Sigma DP1 Merrill this news is very exciting indeed. The prospect of getting the detail and colour rendition of a Merrill-type sensor, plus the ability to use all my Sony/Minolta/Zeiss lenses is very exciting.

  32. How about on April Fool’s we post something that is actually true, at least once a year, heh? 😉
