(SR5) UPDATED: New QX lenscamera pictures! Announcement on September 4 at 4pm London time!

After Tomorrow, on September 4 at 4pm London time (yes “pm” and not “am”!) Sony will announce the new QX Lens Cameras! You absolutely have to follow the event live on SonyAlphaRumors! I will keep you updated with all first tests, news and preorder links.

And here are some more new images leaked via a Korean source that attached some inappropriate anti-Japanese text on the images (why the heck he did it we don’t know). On these images you see the magnetic plate. You also have a picture of a guy with perfectly styled hair (lol) that uses the lens separated from the camera.

UPDATE: One of my sources said there will be special covers for the most popular smartphones (Thanks Ice..!). They will allow to mount the lens without the bracket. Indeed one of the leaked pictures shows you the cover on a Sony Honami smartphone:

Reminder:

1) The name of these cameras is actually “Smart Shot“. It’s a mix between Smart-phone and Cyber-Shot.

2) The SmartShot lenses have in lens stabilization!

3) Again, it’s compatible with all Android and iOS devices via Playmemories APP (the new version will come out soon. My sources tested the BETA version). Connection via Wi-Fi/NFC

4) Videos in HD video 1080/30p, format MP4. Can be recorded with low noise even in dark places.

5) The captured image is saved automatically in both the smartphone and memory in the camera.

6) You can control zoom, exposure, white balance, and focus on your mobile device.

7) The QX10 has the same 1/2,3 inch 18 megapixel CMOS sensor and  f/3,3-5.9 lens as the Sony WX150 ($400 on Amazon). WIll be priced at $250.

8) The QX100  costs $450. That is $300 less than the price of the RX100MII camera ($748 here at Amazon) that features the same sensor and lens! Great pricing! You can get the best compact camera yet on market for $300 less.

  1. I hope the QX100 also supports 1080p60, because in my experience there is really a big difference in dynamic scene quality on the RX100 between 1080p25 vs 1080p50 (I had the euro version).

Also, I hope the QX100 supports RAW+JPEG, at least to store the RAW pictures on its memory card and only transfer the JPEG on the phone.

All in all, great developments from Sony.

  2. “6) You can control zoom, exposure, white balance, and focus on your mobile device.”

Nice, but I also hope the Playmemories app gets updated so we can do all that with the RX100M2 as well, which I own and enjoy.

    1. I hope the playmemories app is available for Windows Phone. My Nokia Lumina 920 would be great with an external zoom lens.
And why not a playmemories app for Windows RT/8?
I’m not sure why Sony ignores Windows for remote viewfinder and remote control for their NEX range ….
I’d have jumped in with a NEX6 already if it worked with any of the stuff I already own!

  3. Now that I see the photos with the RX100 lens/sensor module…I am not so envious anymore. The RX100 is still the more compact option.

  4. Let’s get this announcement out of the way so we can focus on the next NEX goodies !! A massive number of us is still hoping for that NEX 7 replacement 😉

  5. Ah, too bad I won’t be at the Press-event… Been there for the last few years, when there was not that much camera-news, and was invited this year but can’t attend. I was really looking forward to having a closer look at these camera’s!!!

  6. Shutter lag will be interesting to see. I applaud Sony for taking chances, this item is truly innovative, and not what I am used to seeing from big technology companies.

      1. But there will also be lag displaying the image. Either way there will be latency, just waiting to see how useful it is in real world situations.

        1. the lag between my 5R and playmemories is not too bad when its held in very close proximity, so hope it works out well for this

  7. the anti-Japanese comments; the Koreans hate the Japanese because of war crimes in WW2, and lack of acknowledgement/apology.

    1. no those comments on the photos are about a disputed island, which again have nothing to do with this product, frankly immature of them to bring politics into it

      1. The blurred writing is about that?

If a South Korean leaked these documents thinking he was damaging Sony, he may have missed the mark.

        Very interesting.

There is some writing above as the first comment but cant really translate with google translate.

    2. To Progs – Japanese respectably acknowledged/apologized in public. Koreans are taught to hate Japanese by their government.

      1. To Saipu: Yes, the Japanese “apologised”, if by apology you mean half-hearted, vague and ambiguous statements of mild regret at the inconvenience of having to apologise. The Japanese government are not sorry for what happened. Which is why they continue to visit the Yasukuni shrine which commemorates their war “heroes”, which the rest of the world calls war criminals.

        1. The “apology” was accepted by both governments in 1965 officially. Korean government is able to go to International Court of Justice if they believe the International treaty was signed by mistake, but they haven’t.

It is very clear for most people that visiting Yasukuni doesn’t mean “no apology”. Yasukuni Shrine was built to commemorate everyone who had died in World War II including foreign militaries such as the British, US, Chinese, and Korean and only the place that they can hold an official memorial service. They list over 2 million fallen names in the shrine.

      2. That’s not technically true. While some Japanese will admit fault, the government has not officially apologized (Even though they payed reparations it is still not an apology.), which is the big controversy. You also have the fact that some Japanese politicians still make light of their war crimes or even flat out deny them. Koreans are taught by other Koreans to hate Japan, but once again not all do so. And yes I encounter many young Koreans that feel this hate without knowing what it is all about. I work for the Korean government so I know what I’m talking about.

        1. Then you should know the fact that the Korean politicians and media profit by promoting hate against Japan, and the people happily adopt that. They always nullify whatever effort Japan makes for reconciliation, because they know spreading hate really works and they can always profit and gain support from the people more. No way there will be a reconciliation between the two countries, because Korea simply do not want that. And that is why this kind of ugly propaganda happens again and again.

      3. The compensations was 3 times more than South Korean national budget at that time. That was huge amount and must have been very painful to Japanese. The problem was that the Korean government at that time (the president was the father of the current) didn’t share the money to the individuals that were the actual victims at all. The individuals are the one who is now asking more compensations and “apology” to Japanese. Now you know the reason why South Korean government wants their people to hate Japanese…

  8. The pricing on these is very competitive. Definetly a good and modern gadget to carry around instead of a usual compact.

Also cool is the amount of thought on details thats been put into this as an end product. Like saving the photo in two places or the mentioned shutter button.

    Next spring a 35mm f2 and 50mm f2 85mm f2 full frame versions please. 1500$ each!

  9. I have to admit I am starting to like this concept. The last pic of the phone looks like it has a slot for the lens. It would be cool to have a sony phone and a 35 or 50 prime to go with it.

  10. If like to see a tiltable case. Holding the phone in one hand and the lens/cam in the other hand is risky when framing and setting up the shot to execution. The lag can’t be good either. Looks cool regardless and the price is good but the usability may be its major negative to this and it is a big one…

  11. Wonder if I’d be troublesome working out whether shot is level, or even upside down. Naturally with a camera you can tell whether the camera is level and the correct orientation.

Just thinking in terms of using the lens w/o a phone connected at the time.

  12. Quite clearly the design of the body will spawn a new market in various straps or cases to either provide a secure grip or allow quick access to the camera module.
The round shape is an awkward one to accommodate on the body or in a bag and like two people already intimated, it’s inconvenient to hold securely in the hand. But then maybe that’s the intention – you lose your grip, you drop it and have to buy another one…..
    Time will tell.

  13. I like the fact Sony is innovating but having such an expensive module attached to a camera seems a little dangerous for clutzes like me. Maybe if they offered some kind of insurance sort of like a cell phone I may take a chance

    1. How will it be answering the phone with that thing attached? Even worse if its on a tripod ( with the phone ).
I cannot see any point to this thing. Ergonomics!
