(SR5) Worldwide first picture of the final A77 and A65 production models!

And here we are! On top of the post you can see the world first picture showing the upcoming new Sony A77 and A65 translucent models! Sony original plan was to announce those cameras in July but the announcement has been delayed to late August because of the recent production issues that external suppliers had after the Tsunami-Fukushima disaster. The Sony A77 will be Sony’s new top APS-C model and replace the now very old [shoplink 3228 ebay]Sony A700 (Click here to see that camera)[/shoplink]. It has a newly developed 24 Megapixel sensor which we have been told will deliver a crazy ISO performance. Specs are not 100% finalized yet but it looks like the ISO range goes from 100 up to 102.400 ISO. The A77 uses a new double Bionz processor and a newly developed 3 million dot OLED EVF. It takes more than 10 frames per seconds and has 11 cross AF points. Of course it can record videos at FullHD. It has a new USB 3.0 connection (with transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbit/s). Both cameras (the A77 and A65) will use the new translucent technology (there will be no optical viewfinder Sony camera anymore!). That allows Sony to reduce the production costs and we expect the A77 body only price to be around $1.000 only! That’s much less than the competition:
Check Canon 7D price at [shopcountry 6954].
Check Nikon D7000 price at price at [shopcountry 6952].

UPDATE: A source noticed that many of you asked about the GPS. He sent me a text saying that both cameras will have built-in GPS! -> Thanks source 😉

First user that tested the camera told us the AF is very fast and accurate. The OLED viewfinder has almost no noticeable lag or flickering. We will post more A77 user reports during the next weeks! If you don’t want to miss any future rumor be sure to join us on Facebook and Twitter and subscribe our RSS-feed!
And what do we know about the A65? The A65 will replace the current [shoplink 3617 ebay]Sony A55 (Click here to see that camera)[/shoplink]. It has very similar A77 specs. The main difference is that the A65 has no magnesium alloy and no top LCD (as you can see that from the picture).

One more thing: But there will be many more new Sony cameras and lenses this summer. There will be new NEX Pro that will feature the same A77 sensor, a new [shoplink 3058]Sony NEX-VG10[/shoplink] successor, new lenses (Zeiss and Sony) for both Alpha and E-mount systems.

Those are the detailed A77 specs (some minor aspects could be subject to change until the final announcement):
The A77 announcement on late August.
Shipment start early October
Coming with new kit lens (A Sony 16-50mm zoom. Compared to the [shoplink 5586 ebay]Zeiss 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5[/shoplink] it will have a constant aperture and probably have a bit higher price. Zeiss 16-80mm price check at [shopcountry 5586].)
24 Megapixels (The combination of the new sensor+new Zeiss lens delivers 62% more resolution than the [shoplink 3617 ebay]A55 16 Megapixel sensor[/shoplink].)
1080p/30fps, 720p/60fps and 720p/30fps high-definition video
AF fine-tuning capabilities. A source told us that it has an improved focusing system (quite fast and accurate).
11 cross points
over 10fps
3 Million dot OLED viewfinder (more than double of the resolution fo the current [shoplink 3617]Sony A55/33[/shoplink] viewfinder.)
magnesium alloy
It will take CF+SD+MS cards
No flip-up mode to allow shooting without this extra sheet of glass in place
1.000 pictures with one battery
Price body only = $1000.

  1. Yes of course the images are close. But now you see also the nice LCD screen solution and a couple of more details you didn’t see on the mockups.

  2. what beauties!! 🙂 i like the screen mechanics! and a top lcd on the A77 .. arghh where is the preorder when you need it…

  3. Andrea, first, thanks for posting this! Second, can you provide a link to a larger version so we can look a bit closer at the details? Last, do you have any other images that show different angles?

    Thanks again!

    Ren

    1. I have no other pictures yet, but I know I will sooner or later find them here or there. I am also curious to see more about the camera. If you clikc on the image you can see a bit larger but not by that much.

    1. i dont think so.. it shows the top lcd and with some logic you see it`ll have a 2 scroll wheels (front and thumb)atleast.. i would have liked 2 top dials though. anyhow, the display mechanics look amazing.

  4. I’m so glad I held off from buying an A55 last week. You say that the A65 uses the the same 24mp sensor and has similar specs to the A77. It looks as though more than prospective A77 buyers will be extremely happy.

And a NEX Pro 24mp camera.

    I’m spoilt for choice.

  5. Any idea whether the A77 will have the same video feature as the GH2 that allows you to view pixel level images rather than downsampled from the whole surface of the sensor (cant’ remember the name, sorry)?

Many thanks for the update. Nice to see things moving on.

  6. really sexy cameras!
to hell with the ugly, plasticy canons and nikons that look like from the 90ties.

    but I WANT THE NEX 7 !O

  7. Seems like the camera on the right has a different pop up flash (see the lines defining the shape) and a slightly smaller bulb at the top. I suspect its using the current EVF found in the A55/A33/A35, where as the camera on the left has the new/better one.

  8. Question about A65? Will it have same sensor as A77 – You mentioned earlier that it would have a sensor with less megapixels?

    1. One source told me they share the same sensor. But I am not 100% sure yet. I would like if the A65 woud feature a 18 megapixel sensor instead. It would help to differntiate mroe the two producst and some of us may prefer a lower resolution sensor (with hthe advanatge of having larger pixels and cleaner images).

      1. even if they both had the same sensor.. a metal body and top lcd are enough to me to know which baby i`ll order.. especially as i tend to drop my cams frequently 😀

        1. My sources always referr to the A65 as the A55 successor. Taht’s why I don’t believe there will be a third A57 model.

  9. F*ck yeah! *preorder* For the first time ever, I’m about to preorder a brand new camera before reading any reviews. This will an epic piece of camera!

  10. woooww..it’s kinda sexy cam..! haha.. 😀

so..the real name of NEX 7 name will be NEX PRO..?? or NEX 7 is different from NEX PRO..? 🙂

thanks Andrea for the great news..! 😀

      1. “Nex-pro” make me think about the Nikon “coolpix-pro” mirrorless rumor, but that’s still a rumor………. 🙂

        Anyway, let’s hope !

  11. :)) Looks funny A100 A300 A500 I purchased on New Year – in Russia. And they worked fine. A580 purchased summer – already two warranty repairs. Hmm A77 in Russia will be near NewYear again – if production will start in october. I think that I know what put under Christmas tree :)))

    1. What would be interesting:
ISO the ISO 102400 some fancy “nightshoot Mode” (I can remember that we had this alreday by some sony cameras, but the real ISO was from 100 to 25600) or the real iso spec?

Andrea, do you know this? 102400 ISO as the top, no “nightscene mode” would be really awesome!

      Chris

      1. I don’t knwo how you can reach those High ISO’s. But yes, it could be that they use the “nightshoot Mode” trick.

      2. It’s simply impossible to expect several stops of high ISO improvement from one to the next generation of sensors. Half a stop is already considered very good, based on history. So if 102k ISO is implemented, it will be a multi frame noise reduction one like used now at ISO 25.6k. Possibly improved a bit by using more frames.

  12. This to some extent makes up for delayed announcement dissappointment – the articulated screen looks an elegant solution.

Looks like it might just be worth the wait.

I like the sound of crazy ISO performance.

Very much looking forward to aquiring the A77…I think that will do me for the forseable future.

  13. c`mon sony!! you dont need to tease much longer, just give us a preorder so we can sleep well again 😉

  14. Yeah, I also think that there should be more differences between A77 and A65 other that stronger body and top LCD. (Sensor MP’s, FPS ..) Anyway, it seems that I also know what will be under my Christams tree 🙂

  15. haha~ expected for 16-80mm f2.8-3.5,
but…since this has been published now…18-50/2.8 is good, too!!

  16. i have to admit, Sony does really nice camera designs lately.. if the NEX-7 looks as elegant as the NEX-3C or those 2 beauties above i might be tempted, even though i dont really mind the integrated evf.. but lets wait and see what the NEX-5C will be like

  17. Amazing and can’t wait to hear how much is the price difference between A77 and A65. If it is about $200+ then I will buy A65 and save up for FF dSLT. All my lens is FF lens so can’t wait to pair it up with FF body.

11 cross AF is more than enough. Now just put a f/2.8 AF sensor in the middle and I am very satisfied customer. Availability timing is perfect, as I will go to Hongkong early November.

Hope Sony doesn’t delay it again.

  18. 11 cross AF? The ancient D300 has 15 and people here were saying that the A77 should be comparable to the D400, obviously not then. Told you! It is to compete with the D7000 that has 9, not the new D400 which will have 11 or more…

    1. If all that defines a camera class would be the amount of cross type sensors.
And assuming the rumor is true.

      1. The point is that a three year old D300 has more cross points and people here were saying that the A77 would be comparable to the D400, no it will not be! Clearly the A77 has already failed on just this one point and that’s before we get to know and compare the full specs. No doubt it will not compare to the D400 very well, but it will to the D7000, just like I said it would.

        1. The sony a900 only has ONE point.
By your logic, surely that means it couldn’t possibly compete with any other camera. 😉

C’mon, get realistic. There’s more to it than just # count. More isn’t necessarily “better”

I, and i know many many others, only use center point AF.
          It works amazinglly well.

      1. A900 may have one, but it is a double cross sensor, which allows very precise focusing, compared to a 5Dmk2 it is superior, camera focuses on a white wall (infact so does a700)

  19. I hope that with A77 Sony will upgrade their “impossible” RAW editing software. It is just soo lazy, lacks features and with unfriendly workflow 😀

      1. yeah. a good argument 😉 Just make IDS as good as Canon’s EOS utility. and Sony A77/A65 will be a CANIKON killer!!!

  20. I hope they don’t screw it with auto video/sound and make it at least good as Canon 600D or GH2. So far only F100 looks as usable for video from Sony. Even VG10 is limited by stupid firmware.

And I hope to see similar FF camera as soon as posible.

Please don’t ruin this camera with firmware limits, we have been waiting for it for more than two years allready.

    1. I don’t think this camera will compare to the GH2 when it comes to video. If you want to have a DSLR that is capable of serious video you should probably stick with a Canon or the GH2. Sony could easily make this a GH2 killer but they seem terrified of cannibalizing the sales of their high end/expensive video cameras.

  21. I have had a55 for only 3 months and now I really feel that I want to buy a65 or a77. The specs just seem so great.

  22. Awesome! Thanks for posting Andrea! I can’t wait to hear more on the new NEX models and Sony’s FullFrame Plans. Please tell Sony people want a FullFrame NEX! I would buy one immediately.

  23. except the old lens selection(that will change) and predictive AF(that i dont care about)

Whats the benefits of the SLT technology? i just dont see a point for bigger body if the NEX-7 is essentially the same camera at 50% of the size

    1. And what are the so-called benefits of this NEX-7? Have fun with your FF Nex while in a few years we will be enjoying affordable FF mirrorless Alpha-mount bodies.

    2. the DSLR cameras are better balanced for bigger lenses. The AF is faster and better (but not more accurate).

If you feel the NEX is the way to go, that is your decision. Others might have different opinions – thats the beauty of choice.

      1. All of my Lens’s (including the 14-140) blanance excellent on my GH1,
I suspect the nex-7 would be similiar in size,
people forget the true benefits of nex- pancakes! you could take a nex-7 put a pancake and you have a compact camera, then u could put some 16-50 f2.8 on it and you have a pro a77-like performer

    3. the advantage is:
-the lenses are there now, not in an imaginary linup that may come the next year..
-SLT focuses faster, especially with long lenses AND it focuses at all 😉 currently there a 3 AF lenses for the NEX. forget the Alpha lenses via adapter on the NEX i dont have a single one that focuses reliably in the 3-5 seconds it takes 😉
      -in body IS

this is just for now..in 2 years there may not be a real advantage for SLT/DSLR systems anymore

  24. OMG it’s bloody beautiful. Looks rugged like hell!!! 😀 Very cyberpunk looking camera!! What are the lenses in front of the cameras? Are those new lenses?

  25. so A77 and A65 are not sharing the same body design.

    -A66 is a smaller camera.
    -Hand grips are different.
-shoulder strap holders are (possible) different.
-Twin dail for A77 and single dial for A65?
-Also as someone mentioned above, the shape of flash is different.

  26. Now here is my dilemma, I have the A55 and have many a lens to go with that camera, so I would really like the A77 as my professional use camera, but I’ve been using the NEX-5 camera with nokton lenses on trips and the images are just exceptional, if Sony comes out with a NEX pro and it has a decent viewfinder (probably wont) then I think I may use only NEX cameras, but there is the new Zeiss zoom lens with a fat aperture, oh the decisions, one great thing, is I would be lucky to afford any of this with canon or nikon, with Sony I can afford most and sometimes all of it.

    1. well i have the NEX-5 and its an awesome cam, especially now with the focus peaking its amazing. but still i have some long lenses and like to take wildlife pics.. this is just not NEX – territory. so i`ll have the nex for all my everyday shooting and all thats up to 150mm, for everything else i will use the A77 🙂 i think this is a pretty nice couple and very complementary ..also the A77 will be great for flash photography

  27. Not bad at all. Look at that weather proofing!
Why the wait then? Production issues?

If this is really aiming for the 7D how can there be a huge price difference? Where is the logic in this? Maybe its Canon’s R&D which is years ahead of everyone and we pay a premium for that. Too many questions. The D7000 is a more logical approach, no weather proofing on that and pricing is comparable.

Will this effect Canon & Nikon pricing? Will their future products be more reasonably priced? Sony has stepped it up a notch or two.

Just one more ingredient left Sony. A kick-ass (high end) lens line and it will be all good.

    1. I agree with that sentention. Lenses mean more than a body, and a good/exelent lenses at nice pricing will make our system more attractive.

      1. Not just how will the a77 effect Canon and Nikon pricing on there top pro models but wnat about the flagship Sony a900?
If the a77 is all that everyone thinks it will be then how can Sony price the a900 full-frame at $2,600 USD or even half that?

Can’t wait to see/hold and read real reviews about this new body and start dreaming about the wonders of my a850/a900 replacement.

          1. Yes, I agree about lenses
I still see the camera as a platform for the optics and having lenses equal to or better than the sensor in the camera is important to me.
Also, I keep lenses for a long time (I have three that go back to 1985) so spending big money is okay to get a quality build and edge to edge sharpness.

Next year it will be an alpha a?? and in 2015 it will be something else but my Zeiss 135/1.8 will likely still be in my bag for sometime to come.

      1. I meant the rubber covering the side ports, from the looks of its a snug fit. I’ve read before that its going to be weather proof but these are just rumors so who knows. I was just assuming it was based on rumors so don’t hang me yet.

  28. Other differences of the a77 and a65 (from the picture):

    – The a65 does not have a top LCD panel

    – The articulating screen of the a65 appears to be more like the NEX screens. It looks like it pops out and just tilts up and down. The a77 appears to have a fully articulating screen. (notice how the screen hinges are different?)

    – The a65 is bound to be a slower camera than the a77 (writing speed and memory buffer). This is just speculation. When the full specs are released we’ll know more.

  29. What does this statement mean?

“No flip-up mode to allow shooting without this extra sheet of glass in place”

    1. its a imaginary mode where the translucent mirror would flip up to allow 100% of light to reach the sensor.. BUT its not available in any SLT, as there seems to be not enough space(between sensor and lens) to flip around the mirror if the lens is mounted

      1. It probably means that space is tight AND there is NO contrast-detect autofocus system to provide focus when the SLT glass is removed.

The major point of SLT is that phase-detect focus is STILL needed, fast phase-detect isn’t fitting on the sensor yet, so the SLT is needed to divert part of the optical image to the separate phase-detect site within the camera. EVF is needed to avoid impacting the user-view of the image (what is left of it after SLT sifts out some of the optical signal for phase-detect).

Really nice contrast detect OR on-sensor phase-detect would do away with the need for SLT. Sony must be ‘betting’ that such improvements are a few years off…

  30. “very old A700”?
I’d like to know what constitutes “very old” with cameras? There used to be very old film cameras that still worked fine. I used to use a 1920s 5 x 7 Agfa view camera with a 4 x 5 adaptor back. Many still shoot Leicas.
There are some Nikons (Canon, Sony, et al) DSLRs, which I will simply call out of production, which are still being used by pros, students, and families around the world. The Minolta pro DSLRs also continue to be used. I would argue that to use the term “very old” is misleading. Out of production would make more sense and, if it was a well regarded model (like the A700) “classic” could be used as well.
Very old would be a beat up film camera that was a consumer model or a beat up Vietnam era Nikon SLR.

  31. It means you cannot flip up the translucent mirror in front of the sensor. The translucent mirror splits light beams for the image sensor and AF sensor. It actually steals a bit of light from the main sensor so flipping it off the path would give you more light for capturing … I think it steals something around 1/3 of a stop …

    1. …and with improved sensors it makes no difference in the real World which is why there is no flip up option.

      1. The reason there is no flip up option is because the SLT mirror is bigger than standard SLR and would hit the rear element of your lens before reaching full verticle.
Discussed by Sony tecs when SLT first came out.
Mirror can be easily removed although you have no AF.

        1. You are half right…

The fixed mirror is a bit too large and will interfere with some lenses…

However, the translucent mirror has nothing to do with AF, only for the EVF. AF is done by the main sensor, not a second sensor like in a traditional DSLR; omitting this light path doesn’t affect focus performance. Removing the mirror will mean you have no EVF, but live view and shooting with AF is still possible.

          1. @Agna:

Sorry, but you got it all wrong.
The semi-translucent (in fact it’s rather semi-transPARENT) mirror guides part of the light up to the Phase-Detection-AF-Module (ca. 30%). The SLT always run in LiveView mode, with the LV-feed provided by the main sensor. The main sensor is the only imaging device – it provides Liveview-feed, Still and Video capture, light metering and face/smile-detection. But it does not provide AF information.

So, if the mirror was removed, the effect would be: No Autofocus (afaik the SLT don’t have contrast-AF at all implemented), about half a stop more light on the sensor, ceteris paribus.

            Reference: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonyslta55/page2.asp

    1. Yah, the specs are hidden and need to be in a bulleted list. Please correct and keep in mind in the future. 🙂 a77 so cool!

          1. when I purchased the NEX 3 in the UK, it was closer to 170 GBP different in price so it made a bit more sense

  32. Great news, Sony! If the majority of specs proves to be true, that will mean that Sony becomes a technological leader in that APS-C category, where 7D, D7000 and D300s are. Being a Canon shooter, I believe such advanced models will make Canon wake up and really work on making better photographic tools – i.e with better dynamic range, better high ISO performance, better Live View implementation etc and not just only the boring megapixel racing.

  33. if the A65 has the good 3 mill. pic. view finder and even a 18MP i thinkn i am sold as i rather like the LCD on my A330 being jsut a flip up or down shooting as i have never need to shoot a pic around a corner

so my bets are that ziess took the 16-80 chassis and built the fixed 2.8 around it as a cost saver. tho i was hopingthat they woudl update the 16-80 as thats the one i was wanting

sounds liek i ll buy the 16-80 and then in the fall or a bit latter get my new body

  34. So the A77 comes with weather-proof sealing right???

I’m really really excited with this post…still wondering about the NEX pro camera you mentioned…all this time, a77 has been mentioned on almost every post, but the NEX pro being mentioned only as a far truth…

Thank You very much for bringing us some light in all this darkness from Sony ^^

    1. No. There will be no more Zeiss DT lenses for the A-mount. Only FF Zeiss. The new kit lens will be either G or SAM.

        1. i would think the range would have ot be DT as FF 16-50 would be a bit wide dont you think 🙂
at first it was said that the new lens would be CZ but as i too saw the no DT lens from CZ any more i had thought this being in the works would be the last “in the pipeline”

  35. Too little too late? Very curious about the ISO and focusing performance but that won’t be available until much much later.

  36. As I’m planning to buy either the A35 or A65, there’s still some unknown details that would help me with my decision:

    – PRICE: If the A77 is 999$/€ and the A35 is 599$/€, where will the A65 be placed ? I guess it mostly depends on the sensor and the buffer memory. I would buy it immediately for 699$/€ (body only), but I guess 799$/€ is a bit more realistic.

    – SIZE: Since there are several differences between the bodies of the A77 and the A65 (material, top LCD, dials?, flash?), what size will the A65 be ? I hope it’s the same compact size as A33/A35/A55.

    – DISPLAY: I can’t see from the photo whether both cameras use the same flip/tilt/rotate mechanism or not. I hope the display of the A65 can be rotated to allow self-portraits.

    1. Looks like the a65 display does swivle as well (just not in this picture) if you look closely they both have that Wishbone Hinge Andrea mentioned a few A77 posts back.

Gosh I can’t wait – do I sell my a55 for the a77 though? I could sell it now while prices (in Australia) are high, make a tidy profit and use my NEX3 for a couple months 🙂

    2. I think the body only price is spot on $799 for A65 and $999 for A77. IMHO A77 will be slightly smaller and obviously lighter than A700. While A65 will be tad smaller and lighter than A580.

  37. Thank you for the image !

Fully articulated display on the A77 it seems ?
Can’t wait to see if that comes to the Nex !

  38. When you say the A65 does not have top LCD, do you mean it doesn’t have the electrical view finder? How can that be? The A33, A35, A55 all has EVF.
    Can someone clarify?

I’m not that interested in A77 since it’s probably as large as medium size DSLR, I’m interested in A65 for a smaller compact DSLR.

    1. Ken, look closely, theres an LCD on the top of the camera that displays shooting information, the electronic viewfinder is a totally different thing 🙂

  39. Hello all,
I think I would replace my old Dynax 7d by the a77. The metall casing makes me hope that it’s no vacuum cleaner (less static load) and more stable (stuctural and thermal). Let’s see what’s Sony’s definition of progress …

  40. But what are the specs regarding video? Will Sony finally have a camera that can compete with the GH2 and all the DSLRs- or will they still cripple the video and audio capabilities?

    1. Hmmm…how about independent lcd that you can attach and detach? All information is translating on wi-fi to the lcd.

  41. Andrea, I really think Sony should pay you.
Sony was distracted for too many years.

Many of us didn’t change because of your excellent work!

    Thanks.

    Greetings from Portugal

    1. I actually think Sony hates me 🙁
One thing I learned is that big companies still dind’t fully understand that Inetrnet changed completely the way of doing marketing. They will probably think that I am not doing anything good for them. I think the exact opposite of course 🙂

      1. if sony marketing hates you, then its definatly time sony fires some of its marketing guys, as far as i see it they dont do much anyways 😉

the success of the NEX is purely up to the awesome product and happy buyers spreading the word but not at all due to marketing.

        1. I think you do much more, that their marketing department. Your site help keep my atention on sony production. And if your site is not provide me news,i did not plan to buy A77, ant go to canon. 🙂
So i thin sony should sony should be very thankful to you.

      2. Of course you’re doing something good for SONY…

I’m seriously considering to move from my Pentax K-X to A65 after i started reading your site.

Of course unless, Pentax come out with something spectacular to replace their K-R. : )

    2. Sony Has a hard fast rule if you talk, you walk, as for anyone leaking info, so I wouldn’t think they would be into paying anyone.

      1. I think Sony learned hard how to treat people on the internet after what happened with the PSN. Hahahaha

  42. No 24p video?

That must be a mistake. Sony is aware that they lost a55 sales because of that omission. No way they would make that mistake again.

Strange. I don’t really believe some of these specs.

    1. are you stil hoping for pro video features in a Sony non-video cam? i`m sure that`ll never happen.. unless someone hacks the Sony firmware and unlocks the true potential in that awesome hardware.

  43. I’m a bit sceptical about this design. For the first glance it looks like due positionable LCD there are no keys on the left side of the body so hopefully function keys are located on the right side smart enough. Let’s see. BTW – isn’t it competing with 60D rather than 7D? Can’t wait for further pics!

      1. That would actually make sense however I believe we would be better of having function keys as one can change settings faster and without looking at the screen. Or maybe it will be something really user friendly and innovative, let’s hope so..

  44. Andrea! Do you have this picture in higher resolution?
If so, can you please crop the PASM-knob and publish it here.

    /Mats

  45. Andrea, Will the NEX-pro have the same 3 million dots viewfinder? Will it also be weather-sealed?
Thanks for all of your updates!

  46. So when can I get a picture without all the yellow text everywhere so I can make it my desktop pattern lol.

I’d like to point out that all the slots are on the side, the A33/55 had to be de-rigged to change out batteries and SD cards.

  47. Is it just me or does the LCD arm on the A77 look odd? What is that little thing 3/4 the way up on the left side of the camera? Also appears that there maybe some photoshop on the section behind the LCD. Maybe Im looking to close or the IQ is low.

  48. This might be a dumb question, but I’m wondering if the “legacy” A-Mount APS-C lenses will work with a new 24mp sensor. I assume it will if the sensor is APS-C, but there are other issues with some A-Mount glass and the SLT55.

    Comments?

    1. The only issues i heard was problems with some sigma lenses. And the only problem with 24mp sensor will be difraction.

      1. Could you please elaborate on the difraction you speak of? As I use Sigma, do you expect the SLT55 issue to follow through to the new 77?

        Thanks for the time…

        1. There would be no point of having NEX if it had A-mount. For A-mount lenses to work on NEX it has to be as think as a DSLR and then lenses will not be any smaller than DSLR lenses – so why bother with the NEX then? 🙂

          1. +1. E-mount were made from scratch to get rid of the flange to sensor distance…making a NEX with A-mount means a huge empty chamber between the lens and the sensor taking space for nothing good.

  49. Com esse visor articulado facilitará o enquadramento de imagens em situações difíceis e, com o alto ISO de 100 até 102.400 as imagens com pouca iluminação ficarão co o noise bem reduzido. Estamos na aguardo de seu lançamento.

  50. Sorry to be a bit negative, but we’ll probably see the same 24Mp sensor in the Nikon D400 with absolutely outstanding high ISO performance since they won’t have the semi-transparent mirror in place.

    1. it´ll be the same or even less difference as the A55 to A580. which is mostly subjective. considering all the pros of the SLT i´d leave that discussion to the pixelpeepers

        1. For my kind of work 11 will never be better than 51.

You got it wrong, I’m not even laughing now. I was hoping I can keep my Sony lenses.

          1. Can’t you read? It says “11 cross AF points”. It could have considerably more focus points in total.

To put this into context, the A55/A580 has 3 cross-type AF points (15 in total), while the Nikon D7000 has 9 cross-type AF points (39 in total).

Think/read more carefully before you get your panties in a twist.

  51. It looks very roundish…maybe delicate? I wonder what happened to those musky designs like the Dynax 9….

Any info on the shutter duration and weather sealing?

    Cheers!

  52. can’t wait for the new FFs to come out, but i want to test the a77 out also, it maybe a good companion for my a900! Thanks Andrea for all you do for us sony shooters!

  53. Andrea, how does the A77 body compare in size to the A700? Smaller, bigger or about the same size?

    Thanks for an awesome site!

      1. Thanks for the quick reply! 🙂
If you hear anything about the size I’d be very thankfull if you posted it. I’m sure there’s a lot of A700 owners that don’t want smaller bodies (myself included), but the trend for the SLT cameras has been to make them as small as possible. Hopefully Sony knows that the semi-pros want a nice big grip (well, most of us anyway).

  54. Finally!! This marks the end of Cannikon lol. Any news on the A77 Vertical Grip? I dont see it in the image so i hope its still bieng produced.

  55. It will be very VERY, super very interesting to see what video recording limitations that Sony places on this camera too protect it’s camcorder sales. (Handycam as well as Pro division)

Will they allow it to have Zebras and Peaking? (like the NEX5 but NOT the VG-10)

Will it have a 20min time limit?

    Will it have true 24P?

I can only imagine the internal Sony fighting that is going on this very moment between the departments!! Handycam groups vs. Pro Division vs. Alpha production teams! Wooooo Weeee! I bet it’s UGLY!

    1. Hmm, those might go on the wishlist for the VG-10 replacement but for an SLT, mmm, methinks Sony wants to keep their product lines well distinguished; keeping video specs within shooting distance of Canon (mainly manual controls and 720/60p) is probably all they’re aiming for. I was kind of hoping they might do 1080/60p given their recent releases of compacts. Am also hoping for an improvement in video resolution, right now it’s not much better than Canon’s video routine (both do it OK now but neither are great and both are getting schooled by Panasonic on how to do it right)

  56. :O the most awesome news in a while! I can’t wait to see the full review of A77 against the A55 that I have. If the IQ is significantly better, I’m seriously going to upgrade. This is really great news.

now folks at canon and Nikon probably feeling some chill in their spine! Sony is coming!

  57. Looking at the picture, I would guess the A65 to be very similar in size to the A55, and my guess is the A77 will be smaller than the A700. Just my guess. Time will tell.

  58. I was going to pick up a canon 600D with some lenses but after reading this news….should i wait?? its like another 3 months for the A77/A65 to become available.

Looking at the A65 picture, can somebody tell me if the lcd can be pop to the side like the 60d, gh2, d5100 or it just pop on the top?

    Thanks

    1. What about twin control dials – is that the edge of a front dial showing on the A65
If LCD, EVF and control dials are the same, and only difference is body and top LCD plate I might jump either way…but my guess is A77 will have a few more differences over the A65.

      Any thoughts Andrea?

Meantime may thanks for you work on this site – much appreciated!

      Cheers!

  59. Ony 230 comments after 9 hours of posting. It looks like this camera doesn’t generate much interest.
    🙂
    Just kidding.

Andrea, it’s time for a poll.
    A – will you buy the a77
    B – will you buy the a65
C – will you wait for FF a99 (in 2012)

  60. Notice the lens on a65. It’s not a 1680z. A new lens? Yes, I want new lenses especially for full-frame. Come on Sony!

    1. more options…

D – Either A65 or A77 depending on precise specs
      E – NEX7 instead of A65 or A77
      F – NEX7 as well as A67 or A77

  61. Would love to play with the a77 when it comes out with it’s crazy high ISO count and Full HD video but my eyes are on the 2012 sony FF DSLR/DSLT

  62. This is just more proof that “a picture is worth a thousand words”
But i say a camera “speaks louder than words”
    😉

  63. For those asking about the size of the a77 vs the a700, I put together a composite image overlaying the a77 translucent prototype over the a700. When you line up the lens mount openings you see that the a77 is pretty much identical in size to the a700.

Andrea posted the overlay I sent him a couple months ago.

I own an a700, so I am VERY happy that the new a77 will not be smaller.

    1. Here’s a link to the picture that someone put in their Flickr account…

      http://www.flickr.com/photos/48373829@N02/5546142589/sizes/l/in/photostream/

Now, keep in mind that the photo of the a77 was taken at a slightly different angle than the a700, so the you see a bit more of the top of the a77 (notice the difference in the dials), so the a77 APPEARS to be taller than the a700. If the two photos that were overlayed had been taken from the exact same angle the two cameras would definitely be pretty much identical in height, just as they are basically identical in width.

      Ren

  64. Thanks for sharing us the good news. I just want to share my personal view:

If A65 is identical in image quality, and the only difference is just the magnesium alloy body and top info display, who else will get A77? (given we are using EVF, and all info should be shown on EVF/LCD)

Will A65 keep the dual jog dial?

Will there be any improvement of the translucent mirror? A3 and A5 series one reflects 1/3 of light to the AF module, will there be less for A6 and A7?

In terms of image quality, if Nex 7 share the same piece of sensor, can we assume its image quality is even better than A77 given the absence of the mirror?

    1. I would still buy the a77.

First, the chassis is tougher, and as someone who uses his camera to earn a living, a more rugged camera is worth the extra cost.

Second, it looks to me like the a65 is smaller than the a77, so that’s a definite deal breaker for me. Also, I can’t tell for sure from the photo, but I am not seeing a bulge on the back corner of the a65, which means it doesn’t have the second control wheel. Another deal breaker.

  65. I am so excited I can’t stand it! Haven’t been anticipating a new camera like this before! I hate that it will come in fall when my picture-taking urgs are almost at their weakest, but I will be thrilled to get it nonetheless whenever I can. Almost seems like a perfect camera. I do wonder about manual controls and no limitations when shooting video and f-stops during high speed captures – weaknesses of the A55 – do we know about that yet?

  66. Wait, the LCD wishbone-hinge thingy looks like something that can poke your eye (horizontal bar below LCD), say if you want to look closer to LCD to check-out some details. Can’t be sure with just 1 picture, but the protruding part looks sharp to me.

I hope this is not the production model of the hinge. It doesn’t seem to serve any purpose to leave the horizontal bar stationary, while the LCD rotates.

  67. And what about A65 sensor?
3-CMOS it would be amazing! (even if price is $1000+)
but I am sure it is not 🙁

  68. I’m already thinking about forking over the money to buy the a77!! I want it now! I really want to know about the new Zeiss lenses too!

    1. In a few years time OVFs will be niche and EVFs the norm, EVFs have too many compelling advantages including the following :-

      1) reduced mechanical complexity
      2) lower cost of manufacturing
      3) AF can be enabled even whilst a picture is being taken (at least on Sony’s implementation)
      4) EVFs can show you what the sensor is detecting. No OVF can ever do that.
      5) Much more information can be overlayed on the EVF about the camera settings
      6) the EVF can show things like magnified views of individual picture sections, highlight clipping and much else (personally I’d like to see peak contrast outlines).
      7) the camera operation is quieter without the mirror flip (not to mention any attendent vibration).
      8) all other things being equal, an EVF-equipped camera is inherently capable of showing
      9) in principle, there is no inherent limit to the size of brightness of an EVF
      10) an EVF in dim light can readily be brighter than an OVF

I recall the same sort of objections to AF, digital cameras and a dozen other technologies that are now taken for granted. Yes, the perfect EVF has not yet been invented, but they are well on their way to the point where the advantages will outweigh the few remaining disadvantages.

Recall this – in a few years time it will be the norm for all major manufacturers.

    2. I will wait to see how the a77 preforms at the higher ISO values, because may still switch to the Nikon d7000. I am not a fan of the EVF in the Sony Cameras. Coll me Oldfashened.

  69. “It will take CF+SD+MS cards”

I think that there will be CF slot + combined SD + MSDuo slot – I purchased HX100 there is such combined slot for SD + MS

  70. In HX100 physically ONE slot where either SD either MSDduo can be installed. In current A580 two different slot one sd one MS – in A77 could be 3 slots – but i didn’t believe in it – how they will be switched? – IMHO there will be two slots – one CF one combined MS + SD.

    1. We have a Cybershot with that combo slot and we’ve broken 2 SD cards in it already! On the second card we took every care to make sure the card is in the right orientation. It turns out that the card would crack from the pressure that you put in to remove the card.

Still a huge SONY fan but that was quite disappointing.

(I now use MS Pro HG)

  71. Will there be full manual control for video in either of these cameras? Haven’t seen a solid response to this.

  72. andrea, you should make this article a “sticky” on your front page. the comments section are pouring! 😉

  73. Great timing for this to come out…I was about to leap to Nikon but the positivity around this upcoming release may stave off that decision for a bit longer. I’ve got too much A-mount glass to not pause to consider this, despite the EVF 😉 It all looks good on paper, hopefully it will perform at high-ISO. Can’t wait for the reviews & road tests.

  74. Hi Andrea.
I noticed a lot of people have asked this question, and it has not been directly addressed…

Do you know if it will have weather sealing?

  75. Is it normal to check this post twice a day? I am also looking forward to new lenses.I hope there will be a fast wide angle lena with supersonic motor.is it a possibility?

  76. Hello, can people say definitely that a77 will have a full manual control over the video? Thanks. This will be my buying factor.

    Ganak

  77. I’m looking for the coming 16-50 data : do you have news about it ? I know thanks to you it will have a 2.8 constant aperture, but what about the filter size, the weight ? Will it be a G or a Zeiss class ? Thanks 😉 PS: the iPhone template is a good idea 😉

  78. cant wait for this! this is goin to rock my world with them saying it super fast focus and accurate! i bet this will be great with 16-80mm cz lens!! bam!!

you’ll regret switching to nikon from sony a mount cameras with cz lens dude!

  79. hey, andrea the image is gone!!! i’m about to boast it to my Nikon and Canon friends for them to drool on. =p

  80. Hi All,

another one – how about the quality audio input for the video function? This also has not been addressed. Please send some info.

  81. Will the a-77 have the cababilities to incorperate the vertical battery grip from the a-700? Just my observation, I can use the vertical grip for my a-580 from the a-500 camera. That will be a great help for long shoots and no change time in shooting….
