The [shoplink 12933]NEX-F3[/shoplink] flipping LCD will come with the NEX-5R.
This may be a bigger news than you think. The new NEX-5R and NEX-6 camera will have a “full Internet support”. Not only you can surf the we with it…It means you can sell Apps for the cameras! Imagine this! Custom APP with customized filters and features. If Sony really makes this than WOW! Don’t you think?

One more bit of rumor: And the new 5R will look like the [shoplink 8452]5N (Click here)[/shoplink] with [shoplink 12933]NEX-F3[/shoplink] LCD 🙂
Oh one more thing, guess what’s the most Sony camera of the moment…click here to see the Amazon US OVERALL ranking….amazing 🙂

Um third party filters are the tip of the iceberg.
Time lapse control would be sick.
This! I (and probably many others) thought of this sort of idea years ago!
I dont like it! With this comes a lot of software problems. Restarts will now be a common thing. I have an android phone and some app i.e sonys own musix unlimited are constantly closing down or stopping and at the same time shuts my ie down. This is really a shame.
Kind regards
Dave
Well you don’t have to download them or use them. But there’s nothing wrong with opening up the way for the free market to develop third party apps. All depends on execution i guess.
I guess it means typical tech early-adopters will give it a go. And let’s face it a lot people who’ve bought into the Nex system are early adopters, willing to take a risk with new technology.
i’m sorry but i dont get people not liking this.. its basicly an company supported door into the cam. so hacking the firmware will be obsolete for getting new features. 🙂
Running an app is not the same thing as installing new firmware.
It could be very, very close to installing new firmware, provided Sony exposes most of their API! The only thing that would kill the potential of this feature would be overly-agressive “sandboxing” or a barebones/crippled API. Hoping this is a new leaf, and Sony’s tendencies toward proprietary protectionism don’t take priority and spoil this.
The title says it all though…”almost like iPhones”. Sony is known for their proprietary, closed system crap like apple. Not the the same extent, but still needlessly crippling their hardware and software to sell more of something. That’s why I don’t have high hopes for this being the door to custom firmware ect. They’ll run a tight ship, they’ll have to approve everything in the app store, and they’ll be hella anal about it. The potential for what can be done is AWESOME, if it were someone other than Sony doing it.
I heard that you can jailbreak iPhones, so this might be that step into the camera.
Of course, it could be as bad as Symbian.
Actually, With Sony’s phone’s. They unlocked them for developers/everyone. So this actually makes alot of sense.
Take a look at their playstation-system. This is probably how it will work. The potential for hacking is there, but far from probable.
The only reason the playstation actually got hacked (which took several years) is that a lot (and I mean A LOT) of people have a playstation.
if it’s anything like iphone it’ll need to be jailbroken or hacked for better functionality. but if it runs on android and has satnav GPS…
^This
This would be huge would be a for sure buy for me if the Nex 6 had this. No more hacking, this would open up a whole new world with what a camera can do. Makes me wonder why no one has done this before, brilliant!
True, hopefully i’m wrong and it allows for crazy modifications. And symbian lol
One thing good about this could be customization or firmware access to upgrade certain areas as HDR photography, Timelapses, Tethering… Yeap, could be huge!
Great idea to have really nice feats in camera, and potentially a huge trend-setter.
I would love a time lapse thing!
It wouldn’t be the only one.
http://nikonrumors.com/2012/08/08/the-coolpix-s800-will-be-the-first-android-based-camera-from-nikon.aspx/
Ken Warner’s and Benji’s concerns are quite valid. The API would actually have to be significantly exposed. Otherwise, I fear that only applications similar to smartphone photography apps can be run.
Why fear? They’ve released full manufacturing specs for the E mount anyway, having open APIs will do well for their business (see any open source development stuff and you’ll get it).
Sony’s got E mount right, making it open and welcoming.
E-mount is not open, and not going to be (companies may only obtain it signing NDA), you marvellous idiot.
If they fully expose their API this could be monumental… a way to allow a much more customized interface and features without custom firmware! Proper bracketing, time lapse, cell phone based remote control, automatic Facebook sharing… many, many possibilities!
Also, guess this settles the question of whether the NEX-6 will have a touch screen…
The best thing about these new cameras is that they will make the price of the NEX 7 drop. Then I’ll buy a NEX 7.
Maybe not if they turn out to be shit and don’t sell too well.
That would just make the NEX7 seem better, and force Sony to raise the price like they have in the past
I hope the A99 can connect to a tablet with some type of Wifi.
You can do this already, using an Eye-Fi card: https://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666341151
This would almost guarantee regular firmware updates (for examples see the pretty regular updates received by PSP/PS3 as Sony combat the firmware hackers).
It’s because you don’t release new console every year – unlike new mirrorless.
So I wouldn’t put any hopes into firmware updates.
to the owner of this blog:
“What is the difference between then and than?
These two words are quite different! Their only similarity is in the way they sound. Than is used to compare or contrast things, as in “He is a lot smaller than his older brother.” Then refers to time or consequence: “And the Canaanite was then in the land” (Gen. xii. 6.); “If all this be so, then man has a natural freedom” (Locke). So if one thing follows or results from another, use then. Than is also used before a pronoun, as in “Paul loves pizza more than me.””
http://dictionary.reference.com/help/faq/language/d66.html
You use them improperly in almost every blog post you publish.

Thank you for adding so much to this discussion. I’m for correct spelling/grammar as much as anyone, but I’m quite a bit more forgiving of a tech blog. Perhaps in the future you could share such critiques in a private message?
I agree; English is not Andrea’s native tongue. Give him a break!
+1 for this. While I fully understand the blogger isn’t native English speaker, there is always a time to improve the language skill. Than and Then is one simple thing to memorized. It is a little irritating. Maybe because no one has ever told him about it before.
And how many languages are you fluent in?
“Than and Then is one simple thing to memorized”
nice typo while criticising (australian spelling) the authors grammar…karma gods at work!!!
LOL karma is indeed a bitch.
English isn’t my native language as well. By telling me what my common mistake in my english writing is considered to be doing me a favor.
Criticizing isn’t a bad thing. Ignoring mistake because you don’t care is. You like Andrea’s blog, but don’t give a sh!t about his common typo is a form of selfishness to your fellow human being. And your karma is awaiting around the corner.
Two and one them is foul language.
Romain, I can safely say you are a total and complete utter wanker. You are not worth the sweat off my big hairy bollocks.
Are you a photgrapher, or just one of those uneducated jobless anti-society people who are trying to get some descent activity photographing candit asses with Sony camera rather than just jerking off on your asymmetrical harry bollocks by looking at the others photographs?
Why react so negatively to Romain? He’s just telling Andrea a little bit about grammar.
USA always number one, all you others are Made in china language.
“USA always number one”
What are you on about now? You do realise that I am not from the USofA?
I think it sounds like this dude is Romains secret lover! I think he wants a bit of his hairy bollocks! You are defending someone quite strongly about his grammar comments… kinda creepy! lol
They are more like separated at birth. 😀
Is it possible to get a little less language nag here?
If you are worried about the site owners English skill then maybe it is not so brilliant to post corrections in english, maybe it is better to post them in his native language if you want the message to get thru?
(Oh, is that to hard? Then give a little slack …)
+1
I would love an app that enables me to set a sequence of variable exposures (aperture and shutter) that I can save as a profile that can be quickly recalled and repeated.
Add to this control of the lens focus drive for focus stacking that ties in so that controlled stacked shots can be taken at each exposure bracket and you have the perfect landscape app.
Make it and then sell it as an app 🙂
Do I really want a NEX with iOS ????
YES I DO!
Not iOS, some sort of Sony software. I have not used the Sony portable players, or phones so I am not up to speed on their software skills. They do have a history of making many stupid decisions with regard to digital music players. They could certainly put in a system that does not allow for third party software, iOS started out that way until Apple saw the errors of their way.
If they have internet connection then they are going to have to have WiFi built in.
IOS? That fetid sorry excuse of an OS?
Why because it works ?
If you think IOS “works”, then you obviously don’t have to support it, or OSX.
I think it would be called EOS – E-mount Operating System.
Andrea, not the A99 too?
This is stunning news and had to be done. Frankly far further reaching then some of the moaning and teeth gnashing over the odd feature or not of the future cams (sky does fall down on the threads here a lot).
Who needs to wait 2/3 years for firmware updates when most of the advances to the camera can be made by the likes of us 🙂
Only concern is that Sony now have to standardise how a lot of the camera works in each generation to ensure as little fragmentation as possible. Looking forward to seeing what people create and hope it is incorporated into the two new FF cameras (well at least the 36mpx one).
Please see proper use of then and than above. See, even native English speakers cannot get it right.
I want “Auto Angst Detection” to capture the critical moment in Photo J.
“Auto Frown Detection” to capture sullen teenagers after faking a “Auto Smile Detection”.
“Feline Portrait Mode” should be a big seller. Expect to pay a premium for that Catnip!
“Auto Nag Detection” might keep the wiffy off my back. “You’re being recorded honey”.
If its an android platform base it could be good for hacking, that would be my only thought for this.. otherwise Apps are not for me (on a camera).
Hopefully by APP they mean useful functions like everyone here is suggesting, and not just stupid useless filters like what the iPhone has.
I just have a feeling it’ll be useless filters.
Instagram anyone?? LOL!!!!!!!
That app is certainly not for me 😀
What, you don’t like mangling your pristine digital images with faux-nostalgia color casts and other damaging artifacts? It’s so edgy-artsy!
I love Sony. I had only few wishes for major new technology – API to program the camera and some form of combined contrast and phase detect focus.
they made both!!!!
My main wish is for a multilayer sensor, like the one in the Sigma Merrill cameras, but without its speed limitations. The Bayer mosaic really should be obsolete by now.
Internet access comes way down the list after that.
That creates a wide open door for jailbreaks and therefore custom firmwares.
Great news actually!
android NEX.. awesome
I don’t mind a closed app market if that means high quality apps with a focus on photo and video capture. An app like skype would be nice, but not necessary, i prefer a smartphone/tablet with 3g/4g data.
What i really like to have (in any camera) is the option to do wifi tether to a laptop/tablet for remote capture.
I have a Samsung SH100 point n shoot that has Wifi built in. It works great for upoads and can also send pics by e mail from the camera The GUI is a bit of a Kluge. It can be controlled by a Samsung Smart Phone If Sony makes their interface user friendly and controllable by any smart phone it will add to demand for their cameras. Wifi build in for Canon & Nikon?????? My wife wants a better mirrorless camera to use and Sony keeps coming up with winning solutions that gets her attention. If Pocketwizards become compatable with Sony and their new ISO flash hot shoe its time to dump my D7000 and move towards Sony provided I can have an EVF and Hot Shoe!
I don’t need a NEX at all, but this would tempt me for all the wrong reasons, until finally the costly words “Oh, what the heck …” leaves my mouth and I am suddenly one camera richer…
(Those are the most expensive words in the world …)
NEX-5 already runs Linux, I like where this is going…
Will i be able to call up for a pizza with it?
You’ll be able to take a picture of somebody’s pizza and order the same one on-line from pizza hut. How c00l is that…
Seriously i have no smart phone or tablet i nothing about android, so you will be able to browse the internet on your camera?
As long as it’s not Android-based, not enough developers will doing good stuff for this brand new platform (even see Sony PSVita).
Polaroid released the Android-based SC1630 Smart Camera this year. And Nikon is said to work on an Android-based CoolPix as-well. The fantastic thing about an Android-based compact camera is the ability to use every existing camera and filter app like Instagram, Hipstamatic etc. on your better camera optics. And these apps bring completely new features to a camera like stop-motion, frames, dairy and will also include social media ON your phone. And this is fucking brilliant for any fun photographer. And the apps are already there!
But you don’t need really good optics for that. It’s all about fun. And when smartphones optics get better (like the iPhone 4s), there’s no need to have a compact camera. And there’s absolutely no need for those features on a (semi)-pro SLT/DSLR/NEX now. No one who’s paying over a grand for it’s camera wants Instagram filters or direct Facebook upload. Maybe it’s welcome in entry-level DSLRs under $400. But you won’t find enough developers for such small customer group and that proprietary system.
I largely agree with UPPS. I really can’t see buying into the high quality NEX system to use Instagram or the like. The NEX already has enough built in art filters anyway.
Sony needs to create a simplified NEX…something very simple and elegant to use…get rid of all of the extraneous stuff, the multiple layer upon layer in the menu system, and focus on making great pics…that would sell.
I think that a camera the allows app to be made for it has a gerat chance on the market.
Also, a camera that allows pushing of hi-rez photo’s to sites like fb, will also find its buyers.
For most people images is about sharing moments, and if sharing becomes much easier, it has a value.
About the apps, the interesting apps are the one we can’t imagine now. there will be millions of others doing this and some area lot smarter than us.
Noone here would have come up with instagram, a picture destroyer …
But it is really popular!
I think you are missing the point. The apps now weren’t designed for a hi end camera. But when you have a hi end camera that can use apps, the apps designers will come up with new apps that reflect the features everyone has been asking for in the NEX cameras! Instead of waiting for Sony to come up with a firmware update with the exact features you want, you would be able to add an endless variety of features to your camera!
You’re right. But my biggest concern is that a new, locked, quite small system will not attract enough skilled/creative developers as seen on the PSVita which even has a much larger user base than NEX has.
And apps will have a limited access to the hardware through APIs. So they get an (RAW) image from the camera’s subsystem and can than process it. Great for filters, overlays, sharing what’s so ever, but don’t expect much better quality through apps. The question than is, what does a pro need from a pro camera rather than the best lens and sensor quality? Which is both hardware-based.
Sony had better watch out…they have a tendency to overcomplicate their products and put everything in it but the kitchen sink.
Sony doesn’t need to use their NEX line to compete against smartphones; it will never win that battle.
I’ll take a wait and see approach, but color me skeptical. People want power but they also want simplicity in their gadgets. I mean, look, some people pay Leica a fortune largely because it’s so simple. I just see this making the camera even more complicated.
I’ll correct your comment for you.
“I mean, look, some people pay Leica a fortune largely because of the badge”
Frank, I agree w/ you that Leica has a certain status appeal and many people buy it for that. That being said, one reason the Leica brand has status is because of its simplicity. And I have heard Leica shooters comment that one thing they like is that it’s easy to use and not overburdened by massive menu options.
So sure there are many reasons why Leica commands its market niche, but I do believe one of them is its relative simplicity.
Give the people a camera that’s easy to operate but is very high quality; too many options can be just as bad as too few. And the same goes with product selection: give people a few options, maybe good, better, best…don’t put out too many models at once. Why is it that Apple seems to be the only company that understands that?
I wouldn’t say its because the a simple. The are a aspirational brand hand build in Germany. Its doesn’t matter how hard Lexus try they will never have the status of Mercedes.
It will be awesome if this nex will have a build in mp3 player or maybe gps navigation lol
So Sony is not able to install a proper buffer in the SLT77, but there will be much memory for apps in future cameras? guess what – if I want to run some apps, I buy an IPhone
You really just dont get how BIG this really could be. If the Cameras are unlocked, There might be a way to actually make the buffer clear faster! I mean there are TON’s of tech head out there that have not better to do then to look at code, fix the code, and sell the fix for $1.
People going in and making the incamera NR use lightrooms(ACR) noise algorithms!!!!
I mean imagine this…if you dont use the in camera filter’s. DELETE them!
FULLY customize-able LCD screen. Fully custom EVF to show exactly what you want show in the exact place you want it.
I think sony should try and include GPS into the NEX series, even if via a hot shoe adaptor. Above all else they need to feature match what is in the RX100 already, like multi frame noise reduction, steady shot, 1080p60p and the ability to set high and low ISO limits. Embarrassingly my premium NEX7 at over twice the price can’t do any of these (as above)!! Sony, please throw the NEX7 some love in the form of a much needed firmware refresh!!
mmmmmmmm…wondering what kind of OS they will use to support on the apps and what kind of warranty will cover those kind of apps… hope this just doesn’t turn in a bad move…
Give me a break…….
If Sony adds a network interface to a device AND markets apps for it, it will be for Sony’s benefit and not for third-party developers.
A RJ45 port and the ability to configure a IP address on the camera would be kool.
Android 2.3 would make the most sense because 1) Sony Ericsson Xperia uses Android and 2) the Nikon Coolpix S800 will run on Android 2.3. That both cameras are coming out at similar times and Sony providing sensors to Nikon, similar sharing of the OS is plausible. Time to go play with an Experia to see how the interface works.
Sony’s phones run Android, If These cameras come out anything like that, they will be EXTREMELY easy to have fun with!
Think about Google with their Nexus devices. Theres a reason they sell so well. Cause they are completely unlocked.
I really like the app idea and I thing it will help Sony sell cameras. Also, if you think about, having software based OS will actually allow more frequent updates that are less complicated to produce.
I am going to purchase the upcoming A99 and I actually work as a pro photographer, and I think that Internet connectivity will definitely help me make more money, say by having the ability to send breaking news photos (and videos)instantly without lugging around a laptop (which I don’t do. My equipment is heavy as it is and I have to walk a lot of miles on foot). In-camera RAW editing could of course also be nice, and of course the sky is the limit in terms of adding video capabilities. I would also like to read SAR 😉
This will Never happen- Sorry i dont believe it. It’s not that I don’t want to but my experience with Japanese company’s and sony’s behavior in the past about external control over camera shows that this is stil far away in the future. Wifi capability for transfer pictures to pc or printer is the maximum we will get. No wireless controll or even own apps on camera.
Really? ” the new 5R will look like the 5N (Click here) with NEX-F3 LCD “?
I’m super excited!!!
Wooohooo! Sounds like they really learned from their mistakes in the past. If this becomes true i see a great future for Sony. It’s like Microsoft going open source. Awesome!
I don’t like the F3 “180º up-flipping” LCD, self-shooting is useless to me. IMO the LCD most used positions other than resting in its place is 90º up (waist level shooting) and 45º to 90º down (shooting over crowd).
I agree about the self-portrait LCD feature, but apparently this is a major thing for the new generation.
Narcissus rules ok
😉
I had a few situations where LCD flip would have come handy, especially when I have people who need to see how they look when being photographed (even if for a little while) but shouldn’t move because they have been focused on and are on the lighting mark. Sometimes they don’t *really* need to see what they look like, but it is a reasuring thing, other times it really helps fix their pose.
I also did a music video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbCk-0JG3v4
using stop motion technique where people were painted otheir body and really wanted to see what was going on, and had to strain their head to see (which sort of ruined a few shots) instead of just looking at a flipped LCD.
Absolutely bad news. Developing an SDK and some sort of app ecosystem will take resources, which should not come from the camera division. These are just different areas of engineering expertise and if not done well, just add cost to your camera. The Xperia phones are just a footnote. I may sound negative about it, but they don’t have time or money to fritter away. Sony isn’t synonymous with simplicity.
Gives us better optics and improve jpeg engine for the NEX first. Work on the A99 with improved lenses. There is still much to do in the digital photography end like improving the menu system and firmware updates before getting into smartphone features.
Sony has solid sensors and can make great cameras when focused (ie – RX100), but they are not well regarded in the computer field. The camera division should not have to bail out other ends of the company.
AG: Amen. All we need are better lenses and sensors. Instead of complicating the interface, Sony should work on simplifying it.
I am fearful that Sony could blow the whole NEX system if they try to make it like a smartphone.
I’ve been saying this forever, “Some one make an ‘App Camera!'”
They already make an app camera: it’s called the iPhone, Galaxy, and the other smartphones.
Big mistake to try to use camera to compete against smartphones.
The photo-related program I use most often on my phone is either the camera app or the DOF calculator. If the DOF calculator was running on my camera, it would know the sensor size, it would know the aperture setting, it would know the focal length, and if well implemented it would know the focus distance. It could just tell me the depth of field info in the EVF without me having to do anything! Then add time lapse and whatever kind of bracketing you would like. This is not about using the camera as a phone, but hopefully a way to customize the camera to fit the user better. If they do it correctly, they can make the camera simpler! Don’t do jpeg-effects? Remove. Do tethering and time lapse? Add. Do I believe it will be like that? At least not from the beginning, but maybe sometime in the future. At least it is still legal to wish 🙂
This is the future. I love prints but I am old and grew up with that particular format for cameras. Nowadays I would say the majority of images do not make it to paper but are electronically displayed. Making a better image creator (camera) connected to the internet opens a lot of possibilities. Before long we will have the option to make phone calls from our nex camera. This is the future. Being able to apply apps to our camera will allow more editing and displaying images without the need of a computer or workstation.
poke: the future is here already. We have a connected camera with the iPhone and other smartphones. We can already make calls, and can already edit and share and post images via our smartphones. We don’t need 16 or 24 megapixels to post to Facebook. I don’t need a Zeiss lens to post to Facebook.
That’s the point; we have smartphones that already do this far better. No need for Sony to muck up a fine camera series by losing focus and trying to make it a smartphone.
True but I do not have a smart phone nor a Facebook. I take all my photos with a camera and it would be nice to shoot off a pic to a friend without waiting to get back to my computer. I am sure there are other applications as well. I am a view finder kind of guy and don’t know if I will ever get use to taking a photo from the LCD screen. That would require a constant use of my bifocals. Maybe there is an app for that.
oh dear,
till now they not able crate a user-friendly interface, why they no invest there time in finish the current work.
they know how it works. (RX100)
i think my next camera will be not anymore a nex-gameboy
Really? What is the heck going on with the sony division, “Lets just make a bunch of bodies, to see what works and doesn’t” that’s seriously enough!! Attain a bigger division in updating the cameras and improving them via firmware..uhg.
I do not need an app system in my camera, thats just bloatware to me, I just need dials and controls like the nex-7 to quickly adjust the settings, thats a high priority to me.
Whatever, just saying.
I’ve used and followed Sony products for decades: I had one of the first walkman, discman, handycams, cordless phones, etc…and it’s always the same with Sony. They start out with a great idea and execute it very well, and make a big splash. But then they come out with all sorts of newer models, add all sorts of complicated features, bring out dozens of models, and in general overcomplicate things for consumers. So Sony fritters away their market leadership in areas that they pioneer.
Sony is blazing a trail with their NEX cams, and with their sensors as well…they had better be careful to not blow it again.
I just don’t see the point. I am not going to buy a NEX with an expensive lens to upload to Facebook. I don’t need to use all sorts of art filter apps on my expensive camera. And even the connectivity issue; what good are apps to upload to Facebook, et al, if I don’t have WiFi? In many places where you take pics, there’s no WiFi, such as the beach, mountain trails, even Disney World does not have WiFi in its parks. So then what…do you put a cellular radio in it and start offering price plans through carriers?
It’s ridiculous; the camera cannot compete against smart phones…and no matter the camera, I’m always going to have my smartphone with me anyway for all of its other features.
Sony doesn’t get it. People are buying the NEX because it makes their photography easier: smaller, lighter, and so far a decent and improving interface. Don’t muck it up by trying to have it be all things to all people. That’s a recipe for failure.
I`m no expert but i think this news has to do with opened up software.
“It means you can sell Apps for the cameras”
I guess it opens enthousiasts to develop features like 3d panarama twilight ,HDR with retro looks, very customised menus, or the ability to pick up different shutter speed in still or video.
Personally, i really don’t need wifi. But if i understand here “Open source”. It’s a game changer for me.
It is what happened to android and what happened to all open sources codes that everybody can enjoy and develop for their own profit or for free.
I can use my always connected Samsung Galaxy as a Wifi relay to send pictures online. While Facebook upload could be useful every now and then, as I stated before, the ability to convert to JPEG and send using an e-mail or a transfer service such as WeTransfer could make me money and reduce the need to carry a laptop. Sure I could try and manage with a tablet but then again, why do I need three electronic devices when I could do with two (and eventually one)? I think I have enough battery operated machines to take care of and recharge daily.
RE the poll (here at SAR) on NEX “apps” — it’s missing, IMHO, a key choice: “It depends how they implement the OS/app/API/etc.”
If it’s wide-open, like the E-mount spec or base Android, this could be an amazing choice, allowing users to put up their own custom configurations (e.g.: 5-shot bracketing, +/- 3.5EV’s per shot… sure, no problem!)… this could make the NEX my next camera (previously, I had ONLY considered SLR/SLT models).
If it’s locked-down, like the iPhone or the Kindle flavor of Android… not so much (acually a dis-incentive for me, moving the NEX further down my list).
It all depends on how much camera-control is available…
I cannot imagine why anyone would not think this wouldn’t be the biggest news in photography for the year. If Sony does it, every other manufacturer will fall all over themselves to do it too.
Some things that would come to pass:
-In camera RAW development with 3rd party apps
-Direct delivery of a PROCESSED image from camera to clients (or sure, to FaceBook if that’s your thing)
-Imagine it and build it industrial application – NEX would become THE camera for almost any industrial use.
Since NEX first appeared, this was the dream. Sure, Sony can screw up, there would be ways to implement this without allowing for much, but there is also a chance they will get it right. Just an acknowledgement that they want to do it is huge. Very exciting.
built-in photoshop using touchscreen 😉
>NEX would become THE camera for almost any industrial use.
++++many !
I don’t get why people say they don’t need it.
Imagine automatical focus stacking (bracketing) in-camera for macro.
AND! (just dreaming) autofocus algorithms written by third parties, better and faster than Sony’s
Is it possible to get just… A good camera body? With good firmware?
“Sent from my Sony NEX® wireless device.”
cool!
Did your sources say it will provide an OS that supports 3rd party apps ? Or did they just say “full internet support” ?
The former is something we’ve been waiting for for a long time, but I always expected it would be Android based and come from someone besides Sony first. (Aside from camera phones, Polaroid did a phone-styled camera with Android and Nikon is reputedly doing an Android based digicam soon).
The ability to customize the UI using 3rd party apps sounds wonderful. And I’m sure Instagram-like functionality would be a big selling point. (Thom Hogan has written repeatedly about how no standalone cameras duplicate the easy of use of a smart phone when it comes to taking/sharing images). But I’m not buying that all of this is coming already. Maybe connectivity and support for popular sharing sites, but I’d be very surprised at much more. (And if it’s true, I think that on top of the RX100, Sony’s legitimacy in the eyes of non-Sony users takes huge leap forward).
Yes…what does “full internet support” really mean? Does it mean WiFi so I can upload to a certain photosharing site? Maybe one hosted by Sony? Will it mean a web browser…although why I’d want to surf the net on my camera I don’t know…the last thing I want when taking photos are more distractions. Does it mean an app environment?
We’ll see…but I would trade full internet support for another good Zeiss prime lens for NEX…
Camera is an image acquisition device. I’ll do all my sorting and editing on a computer. I’d be happy if they got rid of the LCD screen altogether. Manual everything please. Single control for single function. No Tri-Navi. No focus by wire. I hate it when people call manual designs “retro”. It’s not retro, it’s just good design established by years and years by a serious photography community and camera designers, not a bunch of Facebooking, cell phone shooting, television manufacturing blankity blank blanks.
Yes! I wonder why it’s so hard for the camera makers to figure that out?
Anything about the interface ??!!.
Can it take photos? 🙂
Only when it isn’t ringing 😉 Or uploading, or browsing, or has a virus…
Uploading/sending photos might be useful, but I usually do a bit of pp on a big screen before I do so not that useful.
Being able to visit photo sites might be good, but since I can do that on my smartphone and I carry the phone everywhere with me, it is entirely unnecessary.
I’m not interested in apps for cameras. I want features built-in, not have to find out what features I could get from a download site, only to find the feature I want only works with version 2.3.2 when I have version 2.3.1.
I also don’t want any smartphone stuff. I have a smartphone – very small, fits in my pocket, goes everywhere. No reason to duplicate, and suffer a higher price because of it.
So, “like an iPhone” ? Not for me. In fact it’d be a major reason to buy another brand that has what I want built-in at the factory.
Sony cameras already run linux. So it’s just software implementation, no additional hardware needed.
It actually will make price lower in the long run: more people attracted to camera -> mass production -> lower prices.
It’ll need some hardware to connect to a network – wifi most probably. I don’t need a wifi module in my camera so if I can choose, I’d choose a camera without it.
I so agree. I don’t want my camera to be my smartphone. I want it to take great pictures…I want it to have a great sensor, a great ergonomic body, great firmware, great lenses, etc.
I don’t want more menu clutter…more things to go wrong software wise. I don’t want to edit my photos on a tiny screen, I want a serious imaging device from my camera.
For the other stuff I have my smartphone, and no camera can replace my smartphone for its size, convenience, and other features.
I get why people might be excited over this…if Sony allows for the type of customization that serious users would want. But I doubt that…it will be more like their own app store with gimmicky apps. And if Sony does allow for this type of open source customization, then you also have the potential for hacking, viruses, etc.
The devil is in the details, and I’ll wait to see the implementation…
…and we didn’t even mention the possibility of increased software lag.
Sony seem lost to know how to make NEX the best. I think it’s simple – great lenses to match the great bodies.
I wonder what happened to the Minolta/Rokkor engineers ?
I fear this full internet support might be something like Kodak’s easyshare – which is next to useless…
I know the Wifi function of Sony Walkman NWZ-X1050 and that is defenitly useless. If they really implement Wifi to a camera it must work just speedy and easy like on an Android or Iphone, otherwise I see no future for that.
Yes, adding an android-like OS to camera definitely this will be a new step and a new approach to photography. If will be real-time filters, even better. But i’m afraid that Sony will force its own store and will bring somehowe a castrated solution (no Android).
not to mention, you can add a ps3 controller and play games!!! you can even put a web browser and watch porn! sick!
Sony is brilliant! making less possible cost and earn max of the profit. So now you no longer need to ask for FW for features add into Nex. What you need now is prepare money to buy apps: tethering, ND filter, creative filters, time lapse, etc.
Good thing is Sony is now allow people to hack their FW! lol…
Some people do prefer the NEX-3/5/C3/5N/7 LCD type, not the one from the NEX-F3 since it doesn’t allow the same degrees of downward tilting required for above the head shots (specially when you’re in a crowd) or for me, in aviation, where you can get better shots with the ultra wide and/or fisheye converter or with wide angle lenses but in a high, above the head position in the flight deck or from the top of a building and you want to get an exciting view only managed when the POV it’s just a mere inches away from the wall.
Hope this rumor is false and we get the same tilting screen from the past NEX series, or a new one, that includes the swivel design seen in A33/A55. Easy and simple.
The survey is manipulating – the negative options are simply missing. What if I really hate this feature – I want a camera, no camera-smartphone compromise.
Someone mentions app support and the first thing that comes to your mind is Instagram?
How about Triggertrap? Would you like to be able to trigger your camera via sound, like a handclap or car crash?
Or how about a proper RAW converter?
Another EXIF? Maybe to include your legacy glasses too?
Oh, how about auto correction for those legacy glasses?
I find your lack of imagination disturbing.
i want IBIS instead
it cannot be done! because lens with OSS already ready! duplicate effort.
If Android based then it’s great!
I find it so amusing that people are getting excited about this. Wi-fi… Nice… I can easily export to a fully functional app ecosystem. 3rd part Camera apps? Really? Unless this is running android (iOS is an impossibility) it’s useless. What good dvelioper would spend their time developing for a Sony camera ecosystem?
“What good dvelioper would spend their time developing for a Sony camera ecosystem?”
A developer who owns one of these cameras and wants functionality which the camera doesn’t offer.
YAY!!!
ANGRY BIRDS FOR Alpha and NEX SERIES!!!
HAVING THE CAPABILITY TO UPLOAD NON PROCESSED IMAGES TO CLIENTS EMAILS… YAY!
NOW THE PROS WILL NOT HAVE A THING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT!
OHHH!!! DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE 4G LTE RADIO
SO THAT THE CAMERA WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE 40 SHOTS BEFORE IT RUNS OUT OF BATTERY.
HOWEVER THE DEAL BREAKER WILL BE:
IF IT WILL INCLUDE AM/FM RADIO!!!!!
I LIKE TO LISTEN TO MUSIC WHEN I TAKE PHOTOS…
ALSO AT NIGHT WHEN I OPEN THE FRONT DOOR, I NEED A FLASH LIGHT TO FIND THE RIGHT KEY. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF SONY CAN ADD A KEY FLASH LIGHT… MAYBE PUT A ANTI-SMILE DETECTOR ON IT.
ALSO, SOMETIMES I FORGET TO BRING SUNBLOCK WITH ME ON PHOTOGRAPHY TRIPS. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THE CAMERA HAS A SUNBLOCK DISPENSER LOCATED AT THE GRIP.
ALSO WE NEED TO THINK GREEN, PERHAPS ADD SOME SOLAR PANELS AT THE TOP OF THE CAMERA. SO THAT I CAN LEAVE MY $4000 CAMERA ON THE BEACH TO RECHARGE WHILE I EAT MY LUNCH AT A NEARBY CAFE.
Hope Sony adds a Caps Lock key too.
CaPs LoCk Is FoR NoObS!!!
i HeLd DoWn ThE ShIfT KeY wHiLe TyPiNg ThOsE pOsTs!!!!!!!!
HoWeVeR a NuM lOcK kEy WoUlD bE vErY uSeFuL!!!!!!!
I wish they release firmware updates for the older NEX cameras as well, e.g. the 5n and the 7… that allow the older customers to enjoy this feature as well.
I think they would update the older NEXs. The question however is WHEN?!
App support? *sigh*
Based on my experience with an Android tablet, I’m really looking forward to:
– potential security issues
– waiting for the next critical bug fix
– having to deal with application rights management (”Yet Another Funny Facebook App (YAFFA)tm’ requests full system and data access. Allow?’)
– in-app purchases (buying micro features with coins/points/etc)
– alternatively: in-app advertisements (maybe even ‘context-sensitive’, based on your photo collection: ‘why only photograph landscapes? meet pretty girls in your area! press [ok]’)
Camera apps could be useful if implemented right; if selected and presented right. I actually think that this will pull the whole NEX system down into the world of brainless, iPhone-like mass consumption. (See comment on Angry Birds above) :-/
It would be great if they had the ability to hook up a thumb drive. I’m a hiker and it would be amazing if an app could use GPS coordinates to show me where I was on topo maps. You could keep an amazing trip log with hi-res pics and download / backup everything as soon as you could be a net connection.
So many possibilities, just way cool
I just take my iPad with me and download to that, plus use it to do preliminary post-production, using several apps.
Safari in Kenia:
“The trial period of your battery has ended. Do you want to upgrade to premium? It costs only USD 19.99”
“Your memory card has only 2 images left. Do you want to order a new one?”
“I found a trojan in AWEWQETF<ADS3AQ43QTTR ………"
Give me minolta fantasy 2 card function!!!!
And battery life or speed ? If it is android base, you might expect 30s to 1mn from cold boot, or instant wake up in sleep mode, but less than a week of power. Android is a memory and battery hog.
Sony is not good at making firmware. On my Xperia Arc S, the 2.3 release works well, but the ICS update is somewhat rotten, with lags. I’m really curious to see how Sony and Nikon deal with that on Android. A camera must be responsive, and Android is far from that. It’s a great multipurpose OS, but not a real time OS.
Smart cameras and apps are a dead end. Sony has never fared well with specialized high end consumer electronics. All it takes is Apple or a 3rd party to make an APS-C “digital back” for an iPhone and it’s game over. Stick to making photography equipment, not multi-disciplinary devices in an arena that they loose every time. At most, the concept could only be a short lived disposable technology showcase that would be quickly superseded by someone else’s product after they capitalize on the market newly defined.
I have to admit I’ve fantasized Apple would buy Sony (GUFFAW!!!)
Wait a minute — …APS-C “digital back” for an iPhone… — (Milkshake spews out nose!)
“Smart phones and apps are a dead end” – 2001 forums posting.
DoA if it’s not running Android.
Hopefully – and this would be a big ask – the delay in the NEX 7 firmware is because they will be releasing this as a FW update for the NEX 7. That would be very significant.
