    1. people been crying about the movie button ever since the original nex-3 and nex-5. i’m still using my old nex-5 and i have yet to hit that movie button more than 10 times in the years i’ve used it.

      1. But you still hit it, right?

I accidently hit the movie button on the NEX-5 loads of times. It is an annoyance.

The button placement on the NEX-6 is much better – haven’t hit it once. Haven’t hit it on purpose either! I really should try it one day…

      2. I found my strap hitting it most often, while around neck. Only to discover memory or battery exhausted when I wanted to shoot. That little 7 heard more cursing than all my other 7’s combined.

Lot’s of high quality videos of blurry pavement.

      3. I’ll just throw in my experience with my 5N and say that yes, it has gotten in the way on more occasions that I’m comfortable with. It doesn’t happen every time I go out to take pictures but when it does happen, it seriously opens the door wide open to missing your shot. You have to press that button again (only after you realize you are in fact recording)and then it takes some time to stop recording and allow you to take an actual picture. This whole slow down may take about 5 seconds and by that time, if you are trying to capture a sudden event on the street rather than something inanimate, you could very easily miss the shot.

        1. just wanted to add, it can also depend on how you typically hold the camera as well, so people that complain about the placement and those that find no fault with it may in fact just be holding the camera differently as well. I find that I tend to hold my camera resting more so on my palm and fully grabbing the camera body. That leaves my fingers free to casually press the movie record button simply by raising the camera up to my eye (I use the optional EVF) I can see however, that if someone were to hold the camera more so with their fingers, rather than holding it like you’re shaking someone’s hand, then sure, I wouldn’t see a problem with its location. Maybe that’s a reason people may differ in opinion??

      4. I have 5N for more than a year and I don’t remember hit the rec once. I bought C3 and sold it in 2 months because I was pushing the damn thing 5 times a day. So if you can’t put it in the right place (that’s what she said), then it’s best to just disable it.

    1. Yes and how well the sensor does with rangefinder wide angle lenses!!
If Nex 7x cannot get this right, how can we have any hope for a full frame Nex will work with many wonderful rangefinder lenses?

  1. Hi Admin,
on Facebook you once teased with a “new killer feature”.
All what I see is a normal successor model, nothing too spectacular so far.
    Any hint about something great?

    1. Maybe it’s the touch screen.
to me I am looking toward to it.

a Q button would also be great, I do like the Fn quick menu on the Nex-6 but havin both options would be a killer

    2. Yes I am still waiting for that great killer feature, was told not to buy the current Nex due to this killer feature. Has it been withdrawn to the next future nex 7R? Dun really see anything here.

      1. Unfortunately it requires an expensive license and a 4 week training course to be able to use that feature.

    3. I almost forgot about that “amazing feature”. I agree, nothing on this list so far says amazing to me. It seems more like obvious updates to me that are being carried over from the 6. I don’t doubt we’ll also see the incorporation of the smart noise reduction and object tracking feature as seen on the new a58 (the 3n has those features too right? so it’s nothing to do with slt tech and just software??)

I would absolutely kill for an integrated GPS functionality but alas, that is said to be absent from this camera. Although, to me at least, if Sony drastically cleans up all the noise the current 7 has on higher ISOs, that in my book is reason enough to upgrade. I have the 5n and love it, but would actually appreciate a slightly larger body and grip as well as those physical controls. To be honest, at times I feel like my 5n is almost TOO small hahaha. Nah, I really do love it though.

      1. The “killer feature” is probably the 3.8M dot EVF.
It’s actually the only new feature of the Nex7n, all the others are updates from Nex5R or Nex6 (Reminder: 16MP NEX are between 1/2 and 1 stop better in high Iso the 24MP Nex7n).

        1. At 1:1 pixel peeping. Printed or scaled the 24mpx NEX-7 sensor holds its own so a 1/2 stop improvement would bring it in line with the 16mpx NEX sensors and give the Fuji and others a run for their money.

        2. That’s true, I forgot how much improved the EVF may be. Hopefully the new finder will finally put the general population at ease and kill those fears that an EVF is so useless compared to an OVF. Personally I’ve never used an OVF, but the idea of not being able to see your exposure adjustments before you take your photo seems so yesterday. It seems the EVF fear is what’s keeping Sony’s SLTs from really taking off with the general public. The pros and diehard DSLR users will be much harder to entice. Maybe this new variant can finally give Sony’s SLT line the attention it deserves. Oh, and adding a substantial number of additional glass to their A mount line couldn’t hurt 😉

          1. FF OVF are okay and sometimes slightly IMHO… APS-C OVF are sometimes unusable for me indoors… (FF i never tried indoor)

          2. While I have gotten used to the EVF for general photography it is seriously limited when it comes to panning. You see only a series of slideshows and so its very difficult to actually keep the AF points on the subject you want to track.

With lots of practice I am sure you can manage a decent no of sharp shots but an OVF will easily afford far greater in focus shots than any current gen EVF.

I went recently to the racetrack and out of the 100 or so shots I have taken, barely 20 have come in focus. Most of the in focus shots were the ones where I started shooting and once I started the no of sharp shots sank like the Titanic.

My friend with a D90 managed around 60-70% sharp shots per click using the same settings I used.

        3. Where was you taught such a BS? 16Mp sensor has no high iso advantage over 24Mp, you just don’t have any idea how to PP

    4. for me a killer feature would be if the hybrid AF would really be fast, meaning comparable to let’s say a midrange DSLR.
I wonder how much better the EVF will be. I have no complaints about the one in the NEX7.
third for me: if they manage to make this work without magenta shift for WA lenses (specifically RF lenses) many would consider this (maybe not a killer but) a great feature.
Based on what is stated as improvements it looks more like evolution than revolution.

  2. Sounds good so far. I’m also a heavy Peaking user so seing that refined is VERY good. I’m only worried “improved” AF is dubious since I don’t find it that much better (if at ALL…) on the 6, so let’s hope it’s a REAL, major improvement in AF speed. The new EVF sounds awesome. I’m really considering upgrading if the price is not ludicrous…

    1. If you look at the pricing of the successor models of the other series. They are always kept reasonable. If they were to introduce it at a much higher price point I guess they would have called it NEX 8.

  3. That all sounds nice and dandy. I think I am still getting the RX1, however, because of its excellent lens and sensor match. As I shoot mostly on 35mm, its a perfect match for me.

That being said, if the 7n sensor design likes my Nokton 35mm 1.2, I would buy it to use it on it to have the 50mm focal length in my arsenal. That would be the only reason why I would sell my NEX 7 to fund the 7n.

Again, same challenge, can the new 7n take ultra wides like biogon 25mm? or 21mm? what about the Voigtlander 15mm and 12mm? I know there is cornerfix (I use it) but it would make so much more of a difference if instead of an incremental ISO improvement (1/2 of a stop is good but not incredibly good) and AF improvement, there would be legacy glass love improvement.

By the way, the NEX’s are not far behind Fuji, as I have recently found out, when it comes to high ISO performance.

Download the DPReview ISO samples from 800, 1600 and 3200 and see that the Fujis for any given ISO they need between 1/2 a stop to a full more stop of light to give the same picture brightness.

    1. It’s difficult to fit a GPS in a metal body.

But didn’t I see somewhere that the new models of NEX have the necessary contacts in the hot shoe for an external GPS ?

      1. An adapter like that for the new multi-interface hotshoe would indeed be a very good idea! In the best case some adapter which ads another hotshoe on the top, so you won’t use your flash if using gps!

        1. If Sony reads these comments, I hope some small form of GPS is possible. It is such a great feature in modern cameras to have location and direction information as well as the already saved camera info.

      2. The iPhone does have an aluminum chassis and do include a GPS… So it would be possible to have an aluminum/metal NEX chassis with GPS too (just have a little part with some plastic to let the signal passing through).

No GPS is definitely a deal breaker for me… I seriously hope this rumors is just wrong, otherwise it would be completely retarded from sony to do so.

    2. It’s difficult to fit a GPS in a metal body.

But didn’t I see somewhere that the new models of NEX have the necessary contacts in the hot shoe for an external GPS ?

  4. Greetings,
I am still not sure if there is anything new, without which I cannot live on. I wish to have a posibility to cover screen with a bullet-proof plastic…Both my Nex-5 and Nex-7 suffer with little screen damages in the center. NEX-5 is better becuase I have really good hard cover for my screen but NEX-7…looks afully, even with original screen cover from Sony. I wish to have a possibility to make it much more protected than to make it touchable. I see that Sony sails to make it more delicate and I need to make it more resist for physical contact.
    Best regards, WZ.

    1. Get yourself a Zagg cover. I’ve been using these on my mobile phones and Zagg cuts one for NEX screen too. It’s cuts down on glare, no fingerprints anymore, and super easy to clean. Oh, and it will save your screen from nicks, scratches, and minor bumps.

    1. I am going to hold off as I still have to round out my A99 kit. My walkabout camera will most likely be the:

      1. FF NEX, if it is not too outlandishly priced
      2. Olympus OM-D E-M7
      3. Fuji X-Pro2

I owned the NEX-7 and the OM-D E-M5 (which was great) but did not go for the Fuji X-Pro1 due to the lack of proper RAW converters. No that that issue has been rectified, I am going to await the incorporation of the features introduced in the latest models to filter into those I listed above.

“Anything is possible with enough time and money.”
“Substitute copious amounts of one for lack of the other.”

      1. You call it rectified, I still see tons of artifacts: smoothing at all ISO’s with NR off, moire all over the place and still some of the odd sharpening artifacts in unexpected and expected places.

It’s been improved, but not much more than that.

        1. I really don’t trust that DXOMark score on the A99. It doesn’t tally with past results of other SLT cameras, or real world image comparisons with competitors’ cameras, e.g Nikon D600.

I think they messed up somewhere.

          1. I can see where you’d say that.

However, if you download the equivalent DPReview studio RAW samples for the A99 and NEX-7 of equal ISO, you’ll find that the DxO Mark scores are indeed accurate. And the main reason why the camera results often don’t seem to line-up with the score is where the A-99 metering is aprox. 1/3 to 1/2 a stop off from the NEX. However, once you adjust both files to match, the results fall right on cue with DxO’s measurements.

            Hope this helps.

        2. I have my doubts on whether DxO Mark’s measurements of ISO noise for the a99 are accurate or not because the RX1, with the same sensor, has a different score.

        3. It would seam that everyone that owns the camera does not agree with dxo and from what I have seen I agree with the owners

          1. Even Dpreview which uses DXO mark scores in a lot of lens tests have claimed in their review that all current generation FF cameras have around the same high ISO performance upto ISO 3200 or 6400.

So this far contradicts DXOmarks score of the A99.

This is DPreviews exact statement for the RAW performance of the A99 – The A99’s overall raw file performance is in line with that of its full frame peers. Up through ISO 6400, there is little meaningful distinction between them in luminance noise. The A99 displays slightly less chroma noise than some of its peers at ISO 6400 and higher. Above ISO 6400, noise patterns become significantly more prominent. The A99 still manages, however, to maintain a degree of image detail that ranks it among the top performers in the full frame DSLR market.

    1. That half a stop, if real, is probably in the shadows (which would also influence the DR curve), not the 18% grey noise curve, as that would turn it into the most efficient sensor in any ILC/compact, by a long shot.

    1. Me too, some ALL I and GOP options would be very welcome, along with some 70mbps compression too.

    1. They really just need to add a mic jack anything else is welcomed but for me that was the only real disappointment with the camera.

  5. It sounds good to me, if the high iso noise is down on the original 7 then this sound great.

What will the price be like, around the $1500 with a lens?

    1. What high ISO noise? It’s completely in line with all the other NEX? You have to compare print size… It’s not possible to make more pixels and maintain the screen noize… look at the Nikon D800E, it’s pixel noise is exactly the same as the D5100, but on print size its 1,3 stops! or 2,5 times the ISO performance!

  6. None of those features compel me to upgrade. If the video quality is improved and custom settings can be saved, I would.

  7. Infact, I hoped for a slightly (mainly verticaly) increased size of the body. That´s my biggest complaint regarding the ergonomics of the current NEX-7.

  8. Exciting. I will probably get an upgrade to my current 7

About apps does nex-3n have apps? Is indeed wifi=apps? or is it new cams have apps?

  9. So it’s basically an NEX6 with a better EVF, 24MP, and more dials.
Sounds like it fits right in with the NEX lineup to me.

Which of course begs the question of what a NEX8 or 9 would have in addition.
My guess would be the NEX8 would be a full frame version of the NEX5n (no EVF) keeping costs low, and the NEX9 would be a full frame version of the NEX7n.

  10. ill think the nex will be crap, sony is working a t the playstation 4 btw! yay! it.ign.com/feature/3675/playstation-4-tutte-le-caratteristiche

    1. No.

Sony Games division is working on the PS4, not on the cameras.

It is Sony Digital Imaging division that is working on cameras.
      .

  11. I think the price will be $1350-$1400 since they dropped the NEX-7 to $1150. Hard/risky decision, sell my 7 to get 7n. Got a wedding coming up in June. Never mind I will stick with my NEX-7 and think after the wedding. I just remembered the NEX-7n is probably going to have the universal shoe mount. There probably will not be a hvl-f43au universal model. I heard there’s 1 Sony flash for the new mount for $500+ I think I will pass at the moment. What I think is the NEX-7n is just a way Sony is buying a little more time and fund for the FF NEX. They already sold 2 buildings. Might as well stick with the 7 and start saving up for the FF NEX.

      1. My cousins wedding, I got my NEX-7 + HVL-F43AM + 18-55 kit lens + SEL35f1.8 . I hope the SEL85f1.8 comes out before the wedding.

        1. that would depend on the lighting but I shoot everything in manual unless am outside and the light keeps changing, like the sun going behind clouds etc.

      1. Thats awesome. I think big cameras are associated with pros so most clients will look at you like your nuts until they see what really matters. I miss my full frame but shooting with primes on two nex bodies looks promising so far. I may or may not get the A99 come summer since I have about 7 or so full frame lenses left, 2 of which are sony cz lenses but the lea2 adapter works well for outdoor shots so am not really sure what to do. I wish I was rich then I would not have this problem.

        1. You should have said: you “used to” shoot for Nasa and Nation Geographic, but quit because they didn’t pay well enough. Because that’s what a real pro would say. 😉

        1. why say such drivel? There is no practical reasons why a Nex with the right lens couldn’t provide more than good enough results for those magazines. Add on the right adapter and you have virtually unlimited potential for great quality shots.

  12. to make more lenses for the FF NEX Sony should think about making the rest of their new e mount lenses cover FF. So we could buy the upcoming 85mm now and enjoy it now for and enjoy it later on the FF. Also don’t forget that G lens.

    1. The problem with that would be the 1.5 crop factor. I would be fine with it but most people won’t be.

  13. to make more lenses for the FF NEX Sony should think about making the rest of their new e mount lenses cover FF. So we could buy the upcoming 85mm now and enjoy it now and enjoy it later on the FF. Also don’t forget that G lens.

  14. No hint on the improved corner performance? Good, this leaves room for the 6 to exist. Otherwise, it will be totally redundant (from their point of view, of course).

  15. Touchscreen is useless unless you use the LCD to shoot. But then what’s the point of having an EVF?

  16. Touchscreen is useless unless you use LCD to shoot, but then what’s the point of having the EVF? Choice? Meh. It’s a pro model. People buy it for the EVF. Otherwise just stick to the much cheaper NEX5/6 series.

      1. what I would find a touch screen useful for would be for selecting pictures to delete. Instead of clicking or spinning the wheel click*click*click*…click*click*click*click*click*…click*click* sounds like morse code to me. Or you can use the touchscreen for naming folders, or searching for an app(if that’s an option). Other than that I would not want the NEX-9 to have a touch screen. It just adds price to the camera plus you’d accidentally press something you didn’t want to when holding the camera. Also don’t forget when you let the camera hang from your neck. Your body can’t press something on the touch screen(touch screens also work through clothes).

        1. The obvious use for a touch screen is selecting the focus point. Or simply tapping the screen to focus and then release the shutter.

Also selecting a face or object so that AF tracks it.

Using an Apple like gesture one could magnify an area too.

There will be many other uses for touch screen and I fail to see why somebody wouldn’t want it. The functions wouldn’t be accidentally triggered because they wouldn’t be enabled until you have done so.

          1. Touch screen not on the NEX 6 and 7 is why I don’t have them. I hate shooting in M mode on my 5N, but I want the touch screen above all else. Frank notes why I like touch (e.g., to set the focus point instantly and to zoom in after a shot to check focus in a chosen area). There are many reasons to use touch in the menu system (e.g., someone noted selecting photos to delete quickly). I also like shooting with the LCD screen much of the time if I am shooting from the hip or from a low perspective. I haven’t had a VF on my camera in nearly 2 years, but I am sure I’d use it on the 7N. Unlike some posters, I do like choice, but I love touch screen. Adding a touch screen is cheap. You can get a replacement touch screen for an iPhone for under $15, so this didn’t really cost Sony much since they already had the software to go along with the touch feature. I suspect folks will be able to turn it off as well. But this touch feature news might just stop me from getting a Canon 6d to go with my 5N. Hmmm.

          2. I’m exaxctly the same as Sean – I stuck with my 5N instead of getting the 6 or 7 purely because of the touch screen and the way it speeds up accurate manual focussing. (the peaking isn’t sufficient with fast lenses when the DOF is really shallow)

      2. Not if it increases the price, and not when I don’t need it.

Compose with EVF -> Use LCD to select focus point (-> Recompose with EVF) -> Shoot.
        vs.
Compose with EVF -> Use dials to select focus point -> Shoot.

A newbie might find the dials hard to use. I don’t.

        1. If it’s anything like the current Panasonic (and maybe Olympus), you can focus with the touchscreen when your eyes is up to the viewfinder. It acts like a laptop trackpad with only the sensors activated and the screen off.

    1. There are many times when a touch screen is useful, especially when you are doing macro or studio work. And there are other times when you want to use just the EVF.

A NEX can be used for many different kinds of photography.

  17. Admin, any news about the rumored G or Zeiss zoom lens?
Do you think NEX-7n might have 2 SD card slots?

  18. A May release will allow Sony to get the product on retailers’ shelves before summer in the northern hemisphere with big yellow tags saying NEW and IMPROVED!!!
The only thing that this release really does is keep the NEX-7 series relevant in the marketplace.
Any improvements look to be evolutionary and not revolutionary so it’s likely not going to be a release that people who already own a NEX-7 will get too excited about, but likely will start to attract photographers that held-back waiting to see how the system evolved over time and have been waiting for lenses that are now coming into the market.

For me, it’s all about the image and not about specifications, so when it ships we shall see.
My only concern is this NEX is a 7-series and we will likely see the same sensor and basic features in the rumored SLT-a78 so I’m beginning to think that the new SLT 7-series will also be Little more than a repackaged a77 to pump-up sales.

  19. I wonder if they have been able to do anything about color shifts on wide angle lenses. If yes, then I will be buying this.

  20. I wonder how much a used nex-7 will be on ebay after this. You can already get one for about 750.00 maybe a little more in like new condition if you have a little patience. For that price I can’t see my self getting a 7n but I can see myself getting a used nex-7 and using a nex-6, nex-7 combo for events. Think I might sell my 24-70cz and get a few primes

  21. sounds good for me … depends on price $ lenses … Sony has an unbalanced lens portfolio … for example 23mm f2 …

  22. GPS, WI-FI, Touchscreen… fuck! If SONY keeps walking in that direction instead of improve real photo features I’ll move to FUJI!!

I enjoy having a good photography tool, not a gadget.

    1. Its a must. Overheating is a BIG problem. Sometimes you just want to capture that moment on video, but the moment becomes unfinished. If my NEX-7 overheated in 3 recording 9sec, 3:07, 9sec total=3:25(SEL35F1.8 60i 24M(FX)) in the freezing cold winter. Then what about in the hot summer? I think constant overheating can eventually lead to hardware damage which will force you to pay for a replacement or upgrade. If the NEX-9 won’t be weather sealed, then extended accidental/replacement warranty will probably be the option for me. No I don’t break things, I hate it when you have to be over pre-cautious and worry about expensive thing. Sometimes you just can’t protect your stuff. Like when I was in New Buffalo Michigan. If you been there you know what I’m talking about. I was walking on the metal bridge that you walk on to get to the end of the large rocks http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3628/3377542655_8a690dfcd2.jpg this must be an old picture bc there are small trees/bushes in between. Well it was windy that day and the waves were nice. I was pre-cautious but that didn’t help. So here I am with my NEX-7 walking on the bridge and this wave goes high enough(from right side) to get me wet with a couple of huge drops, my instant reaction it was to turn left and cover the camera but good thing only a few small spec hit my camera.

  23. No GPS is a killing point for me.

I would appreciate if user can write App’s for the camera. I have many ideas for nice features that i never expect that Sony will implement them…

  24. I’m very curious with the peaking improvements. I don’t see much need for more colours, what it needs terribly is dual axis detection. That would improve Sony focus peaking a lot.

  25. Just throwing a feature out there as part of a wish list for either this camera or future models. I love the ability of Nikon’s new D7100 to be able to crop the image in camera. I think this feature would actually be perfect for the NEX series, especially for the 7 with its 24mp sensor, maybe the 16s would suffer too much from the reduced image size. But, Sony, if you’re listening, this is the perfect way to allow current and prospective NEX owners to essentially gain extra focal length zoom on the existing lens lineup. Unless you have some longer zooms in the pipeline, which is one area the E mount lineup still sorely needs, this feature could actually tie people over until, or if you eventually release those longer focal lengths. This feature would also be useful since the NEX line is so popular because of its size, and if making longer focal length lenses would mean a huge lens or a slow one (like the current 55-210) then this feature seems like it would make sense.

Personally I would rather see new zoom lenses added to the lineup, but this feature could be very useful for people that don’t have a lens with that focal length, or to keep their cameras at an ideal size and weight without adding a possibly large and heavy lens to the front of it.

    1. The NEX6 has already this feature. If you shoot at 2.8 times the lens focal lenght you only get 8.4MP, instead of the regular 16MP. If you shoot at 4 times the focal lenght you only get 4MP. Using clear-image zoom, you can get up to 8 times the focal lenght of the lens with very good quality.

If you replace the NEX6’s 16MP with the NEX7n 24MP you’ll get >8 times the focal lenght with a not too little image size.

In the A99 you can shoot at 1.4 times the focal lenght getting 10MP instead of 24MP.
if you shoot at 2x you get only 4.6MP. A99 has also clear-image zoom. I do not know why does the NEX6 gets better magnification sacrificing less image size than the A99.

The A77 does not have this feature.

  26. The more I think of this, the more it feels like Sony is making gadgets instead of equipment designed for photographers. Doesn’t feel like a promising development…

    1. To some extent, yes. This is the ‘gadget age’…and its exactly what many companies are doing now, and what everyone will be doing in the future.

Everything is becoming gadget, widget, app, feature driven.

Everyone wants “more! more! more!” stuff to cram into their devices. In 10 years, who knows….maybe there wont be cameras, phones, tablets…everything will consolidate into ONE device.

When that happens, the meaning and romance of much of our society will be lost forever.

      jack

    2. IMO NEX has always been a gadget. It is more akin to a camera attached to a computer rather than a camera that has some computing power in it (i.e. a DSLR/DSLT). The same is true of these new Android based cameras and that other new model by Canon or Nikon that is targeted at the sharing crowd.

Seems like Sony is trying to cover all bases. NEX is targeted at the mirrorless and gadget crowds (not saying these are the same crowd). The SLT stuff is mostly a traditional main stream system camera. The RX1 seems a lot more like a pure photographic tool than a lot of what is on the market (i.e. it isn’t a all-in-one solution, is excellent at what it does and gets the photographer back into the mode of thinking about the photography fundamentals of each shot).

  27. With the new Zeiss primes and maybe a Sony E-mount 85mm later I think
the NEX/E-mount APS-C system now begins to be very interesting.
So interesting that a FF NEX should not be to expensive before I drop
the FF path and goes the APS-C path instead.
Even the NEX-6 is one very tempting camera.

    Good work Sony! 🙂

    1. why?

      better sensor
      better EVF
      better AF
      better MF focus peaking
      wi-fi
      touch-screen
      and other more…

what do you want more? this will be, probably, the best mirroles in the market

  28. WIRED REMOTE ANYONE? Unless I had missed it, how come no one’s mentioned anything about the lack of a wired remote on the current NEX7? It drives me absolutely nuts having to hold the release button for bracket shots – the most ridiculous oversight on NEX7 for me. One can only assume that the 7n will have the option through the new multi-link to work with that fancy new cable remote recently announced. New NEX3 has it, so I’m sure the new NEX7 will as well. That’s about the only thing I’m really interested in.

      1. One would expect that to be the case. Unfortunately unless there’s an upcoming firmware update, the remote is, in fact, only compatible with the new a58 and new NEX3. Limited functions are also available on some other a-mount a’s but unfortunately not on any other NEX’s at the time. Such a bummer for anyone looking to get into HDR.

        1. Oh dear. Still sucking at stills. Though I’m happy about the new remote, I question the stability of the connections. Don’t feel good about letting it dangle from that tiny port. Not like they made the remotes small ya know.

But I guess only the new cameras will suffer. Jeez Sony.

  29. People complain about the movie button, just wait until the touchscreen gives all kinds of possible “buttons” to accidentally push at the wrong time while carrying or shooting. Lots of room for cursing and swearing there.

I use GPS tracking for a whole lot more than just putting a label on a photo file. Unless they are going to make it a full mapping GPS with track displayed on a map display it’s not going to be much use and I’d still be having a regular mapping GPS doing my tracking on Photo forays. I maintain files of each day’s photo foray track to refer to. Those are more important than any single photo’s location along the track, it displays the entire route I took, not just the occasional photo location. So I say leave the GPS off and save a lot of battery use for other things.

    1. Refresh rate !!! Is even more important, I would rather keep the same old resolution and double the refresh rate. Specially on medium tele handhold.

  30. Thinking of selling my NEX-7 and Nikon D7000 and either going for the NEX-7N or the new Nikon D7100 and some new glass!
    I don’t think I need both cameras….

    1. just go for the 7N, you know you want to… dslr’s are going to become doomed like the dinosaurs in 5-10 years, mirrorless is the future (for 99% of the people)

  31. The only thing I want is a better firmware.
I’d consider looking at Fuji if they had better video and tiltable LCD, but right now, Sony is best for my needs and still, their firmware is quite bad… meaning it’s working but really unpleasant to use.

I want a big graphical display telling me the light meter output with bars (1/3 EV), not numbers.
Things like this really drive me crazy since it feels like those who develop the cameras don’t ever really use them or they’re under such heavy pressure in probably badly managed teams that the software ends up being at total joke.

I mean seriously… some of us know how much potential lies in the software/firmware of these cameras but none of us is really expecting anything since we know how little was achieved in the past and all brands seem to struggle to get a decent firmware developed.

Or would you believe that it’s hard work to implement something like a time lapse in software? I wouldn’t!
It should take at day to write this and if it doesn’t, there’s something wrong with /how/ they develop their stuff.
And of course some of us would enjoy this feature once in a while.

But I’m rather pessimistic on this changing anytime soon. At least from the japanese companies I’m not expecting any foresight regarding the importance of the software anytime soon.

  32. What we forget so quickly is that a58 was improvement with many compromises from a57.

NEX7n could have better EVF and lower noise too… but with lower res LCD without articulation… and a plastic lens mount. Wonder if anyone would complain about such compromises then?

    1. The 7 series is the high end APS-C series. They don’t need to save every penny here to get the price down – unlike the a58, which clearly is aimed at the beginners.

  33. Is it just me ? All I want to know is if the 7N will have microlenses and has better S/N performance. 1/3 stop better will not solve the present noise problem. Upgraded EVF, WiFi, GPS- these don’t seem like make-it-or-break-it features. If the AA filter has not been removed on the 7N, Sony will again have an overpriced camera compared to in the Nikon 5200. Did Sony not learn their lesson with the overpricing of the A99? Apparently not, since Sony is floating the idea of a $5K FF NEX.

  34. I just want better ISO.

Never had issues with movie button, never had issues with AF, never had issues with anything on my 7 except noise.

Oh and for lenses i just want a mediocre/decent pancake for when i need ultra-compact.

Nex7 wasnt much wrong to be honest. 10fps, articulating screen, evf, fp, etc

  35. BORING… This site should be called SonyNexRumors.com because all I see lately are these boring and over priced Nex posts. Please put the Alpha back in your name with some Alpha posts…. Oh wait, Sony’s its Fault.

    1. HOW do you no that?

This NEX-7N “is gonna sell poorly, too”, you write. However, you write with big ignorance. The NEX-7 was for a long time Sonys most sold NEX camera, despite that it was much more expensive than all the other NEX cameras. It was even the world’s most sold mirrorless camera for a considerable time.
      .

  36. I found peaking to be distracting and I’m a user of lots of f1.2 lenses with the Speed Booster. The EVF though, even the current one is very nice, I don’t even miss the OVF on my D700, D800 or D3, so the higher resolution would be very nice, even better if they can get rid of the noise in the EVF at high iso since my E-M5 isn’t that noisy.

  37. Hey sony,i hope ur hearing ths, since u ruined ur a58 spec..ive got an idea for whch u can think off,if nikon and canon can make dslr cameras with fixed lens and good huge sensors and fast lens too,evn whch u also have the hx series cameras but with small sensors….i would say u should make 2 cameras
    1. A dslr camera with fixed lens and f2 apeture,an aps-c sensor and translucent mirror tech too…why not its still in dslr form and fixed lens.

    2. A mre compact body of aps-c sensor camera for the r series cybershot which people are waiting..guessed to be called rx10

And please keep the 10-12fps shooting and dnt keep increasing the megapixel..16mp is enough..

  38. I held the Nex 7 in my hands a few months ago.. Never ever have I held a camera that felt so right. The viewfinder just worked, no lagging or other strangeness, nice feeling to the shutter and “snap” I took a shot. Fast AF too. A camera that just does what its supposed to do, in comparison to the Fuji X100 (now replaced with a hopefully better model) that NEVER worked liked you wanted..

Looking forward to the Nex 7n. 🙂

  39. Improved contrast peaking is exactly what I’ve dreamed of.

When these coming features trickle down to the successor of NEX-5-series, it’ll be one amazing camera for acceptable price. New sensor, better peaking, the hot shoe (yeah already)… I’ll wait and dream.

  40. WIFI but no GPS…. ==
how difficult to place these two chips together…
why does Sony feel reluctant to place all powerful functions in their cameras… every camera with function A, then no function B, or the other function B, no function A..
    c’mon, this is flagship model…

  41. finally a touchpanel+evl model. If implemented right, it will be the dream camera for manual focusing people with good controls and a decent sensor. I’m currently stuck with doing the gameboy thing on my nex 3 for choosing the focus area for MF assist and it really sucks. I’m really looking forward to this one.
Gonna have to see if the pricing is good enough to justify it for me to get over NEX 5n + VF. I guess I’ll buy it when it comes down to about 1k$, around early 2014 I hope.

  42. i hope the new 24mp sensor fixes corner issues with wides, if it does i think this will be a great cam, with the higher res evf and touchscreen

  43. I was in Best buy. I saw two Sony Reps came to the camera place. They were very nice, and I was bit of surprise to see Sony reps. They told me their will be new camera come out next month, but can’t tell me what. I am not sure which they where referring to maybe 7n ^^ Who knows.

  44. planning to buy the NEX 7 next week but found this thread.. wow, will wait for the 7N for sure. Thanks for the info.

  45. GPS is a gimmick. Its a selling point when selling point and shoots to tourists.

I wish manufacturers would quit squeezing novelty features into cameras and instead just improve their fundamental specs. Had they not started adding all this crap into cameras, we might already have our FF compact systems.

Facebook integration into our cameras.. i think im gonna be sick.

These rumored specs reek of “simple update” that will be just enough to complete the current NEX range. Its not a big improvement, but they now have their 24mp big brother. I think if the specs are true, it means an all new NEX is on the way, possibly even FF if the RX1 is anything to go by.

I just can’t see Sony releasing a new 7 that’s only a little bit better unless there is something bigger coming.

    1. @newoldmate
“GPS is a gimmick. Its a selling point when selling point and shoots to tourist”

Im not agree, we use Geottaging for our custommer in aerial photography, so we GPS in Nex7 could be a nice featured.

  46. C’mon Sony, we all know that all this APC-C nonsense is just a stop gap measure before the full frame camera gets announced. Until then I am MIA. Peace!

  47. I’m considering buying one of these Nex-7n cameras when they come out. I have a vacation to Scotland planed for Oct 2013 and this might be a nice camera to carry. It will be smaller and lighter than my A900. If the focus has been improved it will be good birding lens when adapted to attach to my trusty A-mount Sony 300mm f/2.8 lens.
I had a lot of success last summer with hummingbirds. Maybe this will do even better.

  48. Hi Admin, have you heard anything about whether there might be a mode dial included with the tri-navi? Thanks 🙂

  49. If the menue will be improved and like the RX100, I will buy this cam.
Also timelapse would be a great feature…
GPS, yes and no…. good to have this, to track back where I took the pictures, but not to post it anywhere.
    WIFI and touch, not needed.
Better to have a wider range of lenses.

  50. Where is this camera? No reviews, none in any hands, nothing anywhere. This was supposed to be out by now. Not even close.

  51. What I really want Sony to update for future NEX-7 is the hideous firmware.

I liked everything else on NEX-7 features except that stupid menu!

Sony please change the bloody interface so that I don’t throw my next investment out the window.
