(SR3) Two new FE lenses coming in March? Zeiss fast prime and Zeiss f/4.0 zoom likely!

–
According to a new source Sony will launch two new FE (Full Frame E-mount) lenses in March. As you can see on the roadmap on top a total of five new lenses will be announced in 2014. Of three of them we know a tiny bit more:
– One Zeiss fast prime lens.
– One Zeiss f/4.0 wide angle zoom.
– One G macro lens.

I hope the fast Zeiss and the f/4.0 zoom are the lenses coming in March just like the Roadmap suggests…

      1. “2014 is a year of A-Mount”

This is absolutely correct… There is just one word missing:

        “2014 is a FINAL year of A-Mount”

    1. No offense mate, but if the A mount users reside on a similar region as yours, I would believe that waiting for A mount rumors is an insufferable existence. Admin already said he will have some intel for all of you. There is really little sense in pushing complaints every other A7/RX/NEX post to say that the A mount is dying…that the lack of rumors supports its death and that what Sony’s reps mention is nothing worth attention.

On the other hand, if you are trying to bully Admin into releasing SR0 info on A mount…

I want RX rumors but I am not posting daily here about the “soon to be dismissed RX concept”

        1. Ya but you folks play Nostradamus in every FE mount post. It’s getting a little old. If you really feel it’s “doomed”, then please do everyone here a favor and sell your stuff. Or, I have a wild idea (crazy as this may sound): get off the keyboard and actually take pictures with your camera and (I’m sure) your plethora of existing A-mount lenses!

    2. Yeah, I agree. But every time I say Sony is letting the a-mount die I get slapped around. Go figure. 🙂

While I might end up with a a7R – it falls pretty short in so many areas but I’m not sure I can afford what else FF they have planned – it doesn’t look like I’d go the FE lens route. I’d use the adapter with my large collection of FF a-mount glass.

I’m sure I’ll get a lot of blow-back on that but, seriously, look at the roadmap people are so excited about. It’s all Zeiss and G glass. Sure, very high quality but a FE system will be in the price range of hedge fund managers and lotto winners. Not boasting here but I make good money but I can’t justify $10,000-$20,000 for a complete system that Sony could pull the plug on – like the a-mount – at any time should it not meet some lazy bureaucrat’s sales forecast.

    3. Mayby the lack of A mount info means Sony is about to introduce something WORTHY OF KEEPING SECRET?
Or then again mayby thats just wishfull thinking.

      1. IIRC there was a post somewhere on here, where Sony talked about going Pro in 2014 on their photog equipment… if that’s the case, then there is a need for A-mount.

  1. I read a blog recently that suggested lens development generally takes around 3 years. If Sony manage to announce these lens soon, I think that’s very impressive to have 8 lens available since October.

    1. Which is far more realistic and marketable.

Sometimes I think my photo hobby is like my interest in cars. I read all up on the Ferraris and Bugattis but ended up with a humble full-size GM Sierra and a Honda S2000. 🙂

Sure, ridiculous fast glass labeled with the G or Zeiss moniker is cool to lust over I’m not going to spend $5,000 for it. Most others won’t either so it ends up some fantasy aspirational part of the Sony system like their crazy priced 500mm.

Keep in mind this is a amateur/hobbyist talking. I’m sure the pros in these parts will have a strongly worded retort. 🙂

  2. Perhaps one of them is the FE 24-70 from way back in December 2013 ….. 🙂 Really doesn’t help a lot these roadmaps, if they don’t follow up with getting the lenses out to the retailers.

    1. in terms of depth of field you just need an 85mm f2.0 to compete…which souldnt be much bigger than the fuji one. i would prefer such a lins over a big heavy f1.4…makes no sense to have a compact leightweight body just to put a massive hunk of glass in front of it.

      1. Agreed. 1.8 on fullframe will do the trick. More than enough shallow dof and with the ISO performance of these FF Sony sensors, 1.8 will give fast enough shutter

          1. Which Fuji f/1.4? Regardless, Sony would only need to do an f/2 lens on FF to compete with a Fuji f/1.4 APS-C lens.

If this new fast prime is 85mm, it will be no faster than f/1.8. That will be more than sufficient for most, and is the best trade-off between speed, price, size and weight.

          2. Sorry, just realised you said Sony would need to do f/1.4 to do better.

An 85mm f/1.8 would be comparable to the Fuji 56mm f/1.2 in terms of DOF, or lack of! The weight and size disadvantages of an 85mm f/1.4 are not really worth it IMO – f/1.8 is just fine for an FE lens that is designed to attach to a small e-mount body.

          3. @ Lotus Eater, I start to agree with you 😉 It makes me think that I actually don’t need a FF to take nice portrait with great bokeh. an APS C sensor will do it!

          4. The slower/equivalent FF version is always better than it looks on paper, if made decently. Thankfully, Sony has been doing a good job with most of the primes for E/FE.

  3. I am really really interested in how they tackle the wide angle lens issue with native FE lenses.

Will it have terrible vignetting and color shifts – but “software corrected”? (Which means you HAVE to use Sony RAW software?)

Will it have an well-corrected design?

    Time will tell.

    1. Isnt’t “the wide angle issue” more a “rangefinder wide angle issue”? I heard no wide angle complaints from people using the nikon `14-24 with an adapter.

    2. Same way they tackled the 10-18mm for e mount.
A7r has much lower pixel density than nex7 so shouldn’t get magenta cast either.

    3. Agreed with Keith here. I consider my 10-18 to be performing quite well for what it is. Lots of vignetting for sure, but color casts are extremely rare (I certainly do not consider this to be a problem) and rather well controlled distortion. Resolution is more than decent. And all of this weighs 225grams with OSS. I expect the Zeiss to be something similar, only with better resolution.

      1. Looking at the FE 35mm – I’m not convinced it’s “rangefinder only”
The DSLR converted lenses benefit from a healthy flange-to-film distance. The only “wide” native lens does suffer from significant vignetting and some color shifts.

So – if they try to keep an UWA zoom lens compact, why wouldn’t it suffer from some of the issues that the FE 35mm has, but amplified?

I don’t claim to know, but wouldn’t say “Oh, it’s going to be great like the 14-24mm”

        1. Don’t forget that Sony has already made cameras like the R1 (ages ago) and the RX1-series… in both instances, the lens is sitting right up against the large sensor. If they can get that close without having issues (unless raw files are cooked in those cameras), they should be able to come up with something relatively decent in FE.

As far as wide-angle zooms go the real head-turner for me is the Sigma 8-16, not the Nikon 14-24. The image quality is unbelievable even outside of the APS-C frame and it goes down to 12mm-equivalent. The FF 12-24 DG I/II versions aren’t as good for some reason but the 8-16 APS-C design can easily be made for FF. The Nikon 14-24 was good in its day but times have changed. But they’re all big lenses. I’m very happy with my Voigtlander 12mm on my A7R 🙂

        2. I was thinking about buying both the FE 35 and 55nn available at this time. Both are expensive. Are you saying that the 35 has problems even though it is a native lens ? Perhaps I should reconsider and not buy it…

    1. Has 16-35mm been rumoured before? It might be something like 14-24mm, even 16-24mm. It would have a size advantage over 16-35mm and there is no need to overlap the Zeiss 24-70.

  4. I want a 24mm 1.4 !!! A good combination to the 50mm 1.8 😀
Tele lenses are not so interesting on this camera, too big..

    1. If only that is true, along with the rumoured 70-200 F2, then practically that would be almost all the lenses I would need for my A7. Now, if only Sony can sweeten the lineup with a FF 10-18. XD

        1. Yes, why not. 😀
Do hope that you caught the sarcasm from the last sentence of my previous post.

Jokes aside, do wish that SONY would release something on the UWA end, preferably a zoom with constant aperture.

  5. Road maps are nice, but the 24-70 f4 (2013) is still no where near being on the shelf. The 70-200 f4 which was in the catalogue (given out at photo plus october 2013), is no where to be seen even for pre-order.

There is not much use for a camera without lenses to match. I hope they start putting these on the shelf soon.

    1. Seriously, people just comment and don’t read. The SEL2470Z was pushed to February (Feb 2 according to Amazon, end of Feb according to BH) and the SEL70200G says available in April on Sony’s own website!

      1. Reading? What’s that? I thought this was the place to come and complain? Who needs reading? What I need is more expensive lenses, so the 100% crops of cereals boxes look sharper!

There are test shots to take, I can’t waste my time with this “reading” you speak of.

        1. Agreed, nobody, at least here in the US, feels that they will actually see the 24-70 until sometime in March. But we do tend to get the Sony stuff last over here.

    1. There was never a rumor for a monochrome camera, only a rumor that Sony is developing a monochrome sensor. That sensor could be used in any of many applications that aren’t consumer level cameras.

      1. I thought the Admin’s name was different? If this query does not interest you, stay out of it. Thanks. 🙂

Anyway it was the SAR admin who mentioned that he even has received information on the camera body. There is nothing to “develop” in a sensor. They just need to forego one step in the fabrication process-namely the addition of Bayer dyes.

        1. I went back and checked. You are right, he does indicate a camera although not what kind of camera. Why use volatile language like “stay out of it?” and where did I ever say that I’m not interested in it? A query about a monochrome camera is just out of place in a thread about the FE lens roadmap.

  6. This is really more a roadmap of when they expect to announce things, not when they will be available. As already stated above it shows the Sony Zeiss 24-70 f/4 in November or so yet the lens is not here and probably won’t be for another month or two. So this is an announcement roadmap, not a delivery roadmap. You can announce all you want, delivery is what matters to the customer base. So lets not be ingenuous with headlines like “Two new FE lenses coming in March?” rather something like “Two new FE lenses to be announced in March?”. that would make a bit more sense. And of curse this entire roadmap is a bunch of baloney. I seriously doubt we will have more than 6 or 7 lenses that you can actually buy in 2014 for FE. In fact I would be hugely surprised if there were more than 8 Sony or Sony-Zeiss branded lenses for FE by the end of 2015. The camera companies always do things like these roadmaps to hook people and they almost never deliver on the promise as they get distracted with other things.

    1. Just give me a sharp wide angle zoom and the Zeiss 24-70 and I”ll be happy for the next year at least until they get thir lens act together. Also a cheaper fast 50mm prime would be nice as well but I guess the adaptor route will have to do for now in that category.

  7. Funny thing that no one has ever presented an A mount lens roadmap. It would actually be so assuring if Sony finally would announce what are their plans with it and what kind of cameras and lenses they are about to release in the next few years. Or at least this year. I sure hope Andrea that CP+ will shed more light into the A-mount future.

  8. A-mount is going the 4/3-mount way… To bad but considering the A-mount share not unexpected. A huge drop in marketshare in 2013 and now even behind Pentax. Sony is going the E-mount route all the way.

  9. Which software supports the A7r and the FE lenses to process RAW files ? Is the Sony RAW Converter still the best ? I have never done it but I intend to try with the A7r. Thanks

  10. So when are third party manufacturers going to jump on the bandwagon so we have more choices than outrageously overpriced lenses?

    1. “G” stands for Gold quality. Minolta legacy. G lenses were top of the line Minoltas. In Sony line, these are premium but not Zeiss designs.
