An anonymous source just sent me this (Thanks!):
Sony employees strongly hinted that announcement for the 6 new FE lenses is imminent and scheduled for later this week or early next week. They did not reveal (or did not know) any details of the actual lenses, however.
Other sources didn’t confirm the launch date but they said a fast 85mm prime and tele lenses will be on the new roadmap. You have any special lens wishes? 🙂

135 F2 🙂
Wish list? An E-mount 300 f2.8.
Yeah, I’d like to see some new APS-C lenses! 🙂
If they’re really going to announce new high end APS-C camera they need lenses for it. High aperture zoom lenses are available in all other mounts but Sony insists that F4.0 is good enough. I say no more! 🙂
6 lenses?
Three lenses, two more lens converters (3 x 2 = 6). 😉
Wide prime!
damn just bought the Batis 85 mm f/1.8…
is it a 85 mm f/12.8 og f/2 Sony is coming out with ?
Always enjoy these, but this year I think we had more “lens wish – surveys” that actual lens announcements from Sony. (not including Zeiss products)
Sony Zeiss 35mm/F2.0
surely this can wait especially considering how many 35’s we already have.
No. Can’t wait. We still don’t have enough 35mm choice!
After the f2 they need to bring out an f1.8. Then later a new smaller f2.4. Then please for the love of God bring us the f1.7 we have all been waiting for!
Don’t forget the f1.9, an essential lens for true 35mm shooters!
nothing renders quite like that sweet spot f1.9!
I agree generally, though I think there needs to be compact 32/2 for APS-C (the 35/1.8 is too narrow (it’s actually 38mm) and isn’t very compact)
Wish? A decent 24-105 4.0 or a 24-120.
I wish an FE 24-105mm/F4 and an FE 135mm/F1.8 or F2 🙂
12F2 for astrophotography
a compact ultra wide angle zoom lens (F8 is enough for me)
I hope Sony release a cheap 50mm for FE mount.. Canikon and Sony a-mount have nifty fifty.. For now I only have manual legacy lens because the cost of 55/1.8 is too expensive for me LOL
Agree, we need more entry level lenses like the Sony 28 f/2
>fast 85mm prime
WTF, i am waiting to buy 85mm batis, and now they are want to produce new 85mm glass. Why ZEISS and Sony developing a very similar focal length lenses?
If they make it f1.4 then it makes sense. Not everyone wants to lug around the Otus.
maybe it could be an 85 1.4 or 1.2??
24mm T/S ZA or G
Sorry for the noob question, what’s the meaning of ZA ?
Sony Zeiss (or Sony made Zeiss branded lens)
ZEISS ALPHA
* Loxia 25/2 + Loxia 85/2
* AF Zeiss 35/2
* Zeiss 16/1.8 E-mount
That 16mm Zeiss will be huge.
200mm F2
2.8 “HS APO” for FE would suffice. But only in white or no deal.
Hate the white, stick out like a sore thumb with big white lenses.
I realize that FE lenses are the primary focus but, is there even an air of a rumor on a ne e-mount aps-c lens. Hopefully some new wide angle lens or a 85mm f1.4.?
Why make an 85mm that is APS-C only?
Why 85mm for APS-C? 70mm or 90mm (which would result in 105 and 135mm equivalent lenses) would make a lot more sense. If you want a portrait lens, maybe you actually want a 60mm APS-C lens? 😉
Yeah, and for that Sigma already is a great option.
Worth taking note here is that Batis and Loxia lenses are not included in this map. At 2 lenses in each line up, by the end of 2015, FE mount will have at least 24 lenses?
That’s 24 lenses in 2 years.
Well if you’re counting Batis and Loxia, why not Rokinon, Mitakon, Venus, etc.. There’s probably 40+ full frame E-mount lenses
Which of those is specifically made for FE mount that is 1) not an SLR lens rehoused for E mount and 2) APS-C E mount lens.
135
Native 135 is missing a lot. Ideally STF or closer to F2.0 “standard” lens.
A 135mm STF with f2 (rather than 2.8) and AF would be pretty amazing.
I shudder to think what it would cost—although I think they should steal a page from Fuji’s playbook and announce a 135mm f/1.8 and a second version of the same lens with STF.
Close to 2k? It’s a specialty lens but it will give the system some uniqueness and could be marketed as a prestige lens like an Otus.
21 f2?
18 2.8?
15 2.8?
TS lenses- make them 24, 35, 50 and 90 while they are at it.
Maybe also 200 1.8 and 300 2?
The wishlist goes on and on….
THe tilt shift canon lenses are excellent and work perfectly (since they are all manual) via adapter.
The whole canon line (except 3 zooms) have to be updated for high res sensor. IMHO Sony line is quite more advanced on this point. Even the cheap 28 f2 is faaaar better
I’d agree with Sony’s line being great, but Canon’s wide angle TS lenses are really good.
I was just joking on the soon to come wishlists from SAR readers.
Ah, good call.
You should have also asked for AF T-S lenses or a tilt-shift sensor.
Ah yes indeed. I made a comprehensive list. Feel free to add to that. I will make an adendum right now.
Done.
70-200 f2.8 in the FE mount would be nice, a sony/zeiss135 f2 or f1.8, a sony/zeiss 24 f2 or f1.8, a sony/zeiss 24-70 f2.8, and a sony/zeiss 16mm f2.0 would be a good start.
What’s soon ? Tommorow? A week ? A month ? 3 months ?
50/1.4
Not 55mm, not 35mm, not f/1.8
While we’re at it, let’s have good transmission and low vignetting. It can be big and heavy.
Why?
To people whine more about the lens size on Sony line-up. /s
For low light
1.8 is enough, if not, get a 0.95 mitakon
I think we must agree to disagree…
1.8 is two thirds of a stop slower. That’s the difference between shooting a face at 1/100 and 1/60, which will make a huge difference if they’re in conversation rather than posing for a portrait.
The 0.95 lenses vignette too much, sometimes they’re darker in the corners than a 1.4, and there is no such thing as easily corrected vignetting at ISO 12800+. Plus they don’t have autofocus, and I don’t often have time for MF.
I’m 15 years into a project shooting in the British Museum, often groups of people with non-centered subjects. It gets down to -5EV in there. Some of us really do want the extra stop we’d get from a low-vignetting f/1.4 compared to a regular f/1.8. 🙂
Well, you now have IBIS, that will give you 4 stops.
If we didn’t have already 55 .18, 50 2, 55 otus 1.4 , maybe there was a point to the 1.4. not now that they have 3 options.
IBIS does nothing for moving subjects, only moving cameras. This is the real issue — un-posed shots of people in low light, what you might call “indoor street photography”. For that you need shutter speeds — 1/125 is reasonable, 1/60 misses a some shots, 1/30 misses most shots. When I shoot interiors I often hand-hold at 1/6 with stabilized lenses, but that does nothing for people.
The Otus and Loxia are out because they’re manual focus. They both have splendid optics, but I would never consider them.
The 55/1.8 is lovely, but a vanilla Sigma 50/1.4 non-Art is almost half a stop brighter in the corners for half the money, and it has possibly even better bokeh. It does that by being big and heavy and not using every square millimeter of the glass (this is also one of the things that makes the Otus so good).
This business of autofocus mount adapters suddenly working so well is very interesting, though. That could tempt me into an A7S mkII and third party lens, when the time comes.
Anyhow, thanks for the discussion.
Loxia are Zeiss lenses, not part of this roadmap.
Right, thanks for correction.
No more dancing around:
50mm 1.4
24-70 2.8
70-200 2.8
You can only avoid the absolute standards for so long.
And make them small (er) too.
Why do you need something other than the amazing 55??
Because some people just look for the speed of the lens, regardless if good or bad lens. So they will only consider the Sony FE lens lineup acceptable when there are F2.8 zooms and F1.4 primes. Old habits seldome change, Sony has to follow if they want or not…
Would be fun if they do 50/1.4 in the class of 28/2 I.e. Much cheaper than 55/1.8 (this will resemble Leica and Zeiss)
And yet none of those mounts have any decent constant aperture lenses above 3x ratio.
100mm f2
200mm f2.8
18mm f2.8 or 4
24-100mm f4
100-400mm slow
70-210mm f3.5-4.5 under 500g
don’t get the point of a 3rd lens at that focal range (85mm Batis, 90mm Sony macro)… either it will be dead cheap or even more expensive (f1.2 ???)…
Personally I would prefer a 24-100 f4 (or less 🙂 ) and an ultra wide zoom (maybe 12-18mm)…
400mm f5.6
My wish is that this rumor is true.
24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and a big a9 at photokina to go with them
They need to get something like Yongnuo on board to convert those cheap clones they make for e-mount, now that they got the cheapest 35mm body.
wow fast 85mm prime when we await the Batis lens……
Seems Sony marketing want to keep users away from Zeiss that is set to deliver the Batis in the next two or three weeks.
A 70-200 f/2.8 FE would be a nice and clear statement
There is Amount lens like that that works well. Why should they build a new one?
Given that the EA3 or EA1 do not take any space and all new cameras will be able to fast focus the 70-200/2.8 with EA1 and EA3…I really fail to see any reason to make FE lens like this. It will be simply glueing the EA3 on the back of the current lens and painting the adapter white. At the same time FE mount 70-200/2.8 will be unusable on A mount bodies
If they start producing big lenses for FE, why not make big bodies as well? A-Mount will be done then. I don’t think Sony will keep both lines with identical capabilities.
And, while A7RII seems to be an improvement with A-Mount glass, new lenses for FE will still be needed, with step motors able to utilize full AF capabilities (CDAF+PDAF) of mirrorless cameras.
Personally, I will not buy into FE until they have native f/2.8 zooms announced. It doesn’t make much sense to buy a body with one mount and a lens with another mount and an adapter to connect them, instead of simply buying one system.
Using A-Mount lenses on FE is a temporary fix, not a solution, even if the fix is getting better.
So APS-C is dead, I guess?
Bad guess IMO.
this is plain stupid. All FE lenses work great on A6000
Except, FE lenses are larger, heavier, and more expensive. Just like FF DSLR lenses compared to aps-c-specific lenses.
Yet, there are always new aps-c DSLR lenses being released. APS-C e-mount? Not so much.
Larger and heavier is ok, but the money thing is the problem in my opinion
For me, all three are important. Cost is perhaps #1. But, what’s the point of a compact, lightweight body, if I’m gonna just strap humungous tonnage on the front of it?
What’s missing so much in the APS-C except big high quality expensive lenses? Sony’s line is actually the cheapest mirrorless line and very compact.
To be fair, CaNikon make quite few APS-C lenses because they want everyone to upgrade to FF.
That makes no sense. Did you mean they “don’t” want everyone to upgrade to FF? (Unlike what appears to be Sony’s e-mount strategy?)
Yeah! Work but its all F4! and no affordable primes like SEL16/1.4-1.8, SEL24/1.8 or SEL16-55/2.8, SEL50-150/2.8, small SEL 85/1.8 etc etc etc
Aps-c only lenses are generally only needed for a wide angle prime / zoom and a couple of budget friendly zooms.
Sony have A7 with f/4 lenses for that (same as APS-C with f/2.8 lenses)
Other manufacturers only have APS-C
Sony’s APS-C is only for compactness
something faster than f/2!
wow fast 85mm prime when we await the Batis lens……
Seems Sony marketing want to keep users away from Zeiss that is set to deliver the Batis in the next two or three weeks.
100/2 lens would be very nice
12mm with AF would be nice
A TS lens will be nice
135/2 lens would be fantastic
Telephotos are nice but I would not mind using them with adapter to A mount. there is not physical size gain in E mount lenses like 70-200/4 vs. A mount lens of similar specification
Sony should put TS in-body — it’s where advantage can be had over DSLR; the compulsory DSLR emulation sucks.
Is that really possible?
Yes, Like lensbaby adapters. The trick is to get good AF with such a combo.
TS lenses used to lack AF, so even rudimentary AF would be much faster than manual focusing TS lens.
And it seems they solved it (since A7RM2)
Have you actually seen TS lens live? Af with TS???? You need motors for Tilt and Shift too and may be the camera can then do it but it is not necessary really
Since the sensor itself is small (unlike heavy TS mechanisms), motors moving it would be tiny.
That could be done possibly in a bigger body – yes nice idea. Though it will require specialized body. Perhaps even A7 m2 stabilization can be programmed for slight tilt effect.
I wonder if ti will be able to align well the sensor in non TS mode.
No, current IBIS cannot be programmed to do it. Of course it would be reserved for higher end bodies.
Actually shift will not work with shifting the sensor as the opening of the bayonet does not allow 10-15mm travel of the sensor in all directions (any directions actually – there is about 2mm in each direction now.
There’s no such problem for aps-c sensors which can use existing FF lenses as TS.
And shift can be done in software only (using EVF advantage! — you compose and camera writes settings to RAW converter so it knows which perspective correction to apply) without having lenses covering larger area. Of course, applying perspective correction in post loses some sharpness, but it’s better than using outer portion of lens circle which had to be extended.
Whenever tilt or shift is used on a TS lens, focus gets changed. AF would probably not function unless in full neutral position. Plus the position of the motors may conflict with the gears shifting (or ability to tilt/shift). Finally, tilt-shift and perspective control lenses are tripod, still-life and for slow shooting which generally renders AF unnecessary (and potentially unnecessarily more expensive).
You’re confusing cause and effect. They are for tripod because of their bulk and everything operated by hand.
>focus gets changed.
that’s exactly the problem i’m proposing solution for.
I’m not confusing anything.
The lenses are designed for still life/product, interior / architecture and landscape photographers for the most part. These photographers are going to use a tripod regardless and are going to take their photos deliberately. As such, tilt-shift lenses have been designed with the needs of the core users in mind and these users do not need autofocus (which may not work – your proposal is not a solution just an untested, wishful idea).
AF would definitely increase size, weight, fragility and cost however – and is unnecessary for the intended market.
consider this use-case. You’re going to make a photo of two person using 55/1.8 and it’s dark. If you shoot fully open, only one face will be in focus. If you stop down, you get either motion blur or noise. But if you have sensor tilt, — the camera does typical CDAF hunt, finds faces, calculates degree of tilt, tilts sensor and fires a shot –all in a fraction of second (instead of dozens of seconds with TS lenses) — and both faces look sharp on photo.
> your proposal is not a solution just an untested, wishful idea).
let me guess. Is your major humanities?
>AF would definitely increase size, weight
the point is, you will not need special lenses for this. TS lenses are conceptually leftover or pre-computer, pre-digital-sensor era.
>the intended market.
which for TS in-body is going to be larger than for clumsy awkward specialist lenses.
Consider this use case:
I am going to photograph two people and it’s dark. I light them and both faces are sharp.
You can even flatten them so everything fits in DOF but this does change composition of the shot.
My idea is a motorized bellows/ focusing rail/e mount adapter.
Any lens can be attached and at infinity bellows would be thickness of normal adapter.
Camera would power focusing motor ,so that even manual focus, ts, and telescopes could autofocus.
Differrent size models could be available…the largest for telescopes, long lens macro, and supertelephotos.
For autofucus lenses user could choose between in lens af, or focus rail af.
A tilt shift version might also be possible.
Since focus is determined by sensorit should also work for tilted focal plane.
I have TS adapter and it works with DSLR lenses. However TS lens design is quite different from DSLR lenses and although TS works decently on A600 with adapter and full frame DSLR lenses I would prefer dedicated TS lens as its optics is different and designed for TS use.
On A7 DSLr or FE lenses cannot be used with TS adapter as the image circle is too small and when tilted or shifted the lens produces bad vignetting.
It is not possible nor desirable to put it in the body. If you handled TS at least once you would know.
Yes… if you rode a horse once, you would know replacing horse with an engine is a bad idea.
Your comments show some lack of knowledge my friend. You have great ideas but there is some physics and complications to be considered.
A fast 85mm??? Isn’t that the Batis?!?!?
We just got the 85/1.8 Batis and the 90/2.8 macro…. I think the range is fairly well covered.
Sony recently hinted that they know they need to fill out 2.8 zooms and long telephotos.
I expect a 24-50/2.8… A 135/2.8.. A 300mm telephoto, perhaps with teleconverters..
Perhaps even a 100-400 zoom, or at least a 70-300.
The Batis lens is Zeiss Zeiss lens not a Sony Zeiss lens. Batis is marketed and sold by Zeiss where 1.8/55 is marketed and sold by Sony.
Also the 1.8/55 is merely using Zeiss brand but is designed and built by Sony under some agreement with Zeiss.
The 1.8/85 Batis is designed and built by Zeiss under some agreement with Sony to interface the cameras.
Added a sony branded 85/1.4 lens would be lovely
Good point. So from Sony’s perspective, they haven’t filled the gap. Yet, for the shooter, they already have 2 options in that range.
So if Sony really wants to fill needs and unserved demand, they should skip over the 85.
If they do go with the 85… I wonder how it would compare in terms of IQ, aperture and price. The way Sony prices their E-mount lenses, I wouldn’t expect a Sony branded 85mm to be much cheaper than the Batis. I doubt they would go faster with a 1.4… Except for the 35mm, they have avoided the super fast aperture in order to keep the size down.
So a Sony branded $999 85/1.8 would simply split the market with the Batis (and to some extent, split with the existing Sony 90/2.8), without really filling any unserved market.
With the arrival of the Batis 85mm, Sony should release a 75mm F1.4 or a 70mm F1.4
It’s a focal length of prime lens that only Leica and Pentax have released in recent-ish years. And it would set Sony apart from Nikon and Canon even further if they did it right.
F1.4 was practical limit for A-mount. E-mount allows faster lenses. Why Sony should be stuck to former limitation?
Because 1.4.. and 1.2 lenses are HUGE. And 1 supposed advantage of the E-mount is size savings. That’s why Sony has primarily gone with F4 zooms instead of 2.8… 2.8 and 1.8 primes instead of 1.4 (except for the 35/1.4).
Eventually, I do think they will go with more and more big lenses.. but they do have a compelling reason to focus first on smaller lenses.
Another 85mm will make sense if its cheaper and smaller, which of course means slower as well.
Its true that the 55/1.8 is made by Sony, but the optics are designed by Zeiss. I also have the suspicion that the AF functionality in the Zeiss Batis lenses is provided by Sony. So they collaborate quite a lot and in a sense there is some common ground between “pure” Zeiss and Zony versions.
55/1.8 is designed by Sony, the patent is owned by them
I am pretty sure if Sony designed the lens themselves they would be proud to call it Sony or Sony G lens, the same way they did with the 28/2.
Do you suggest, they only pay Zeiss to put their logo on the lens just to be able to sell it at higher price.
They get to use the T* coating.
those are your thoughts but the patent is an official document.
If it was Zeiss design, why would Sony patent it? Actually we know that Zeiss buys designs too (Batis) rather than sells them.
They at least pay Zeiss to use the Sonnar name and T* coatings.
A person I know at Sony said this isn’t true at all, the Batis is totally Zeiss and they didn’t even assist with the OLED, AF or anything
Well the 55/1.8 is based on a Zeiss Sonnar design, but the specific lens was designed in Japan by Sony.
Zeiss Zeiss? Or is it Tamron Zeiss? 😉
batis is a Zeiss Brand lense, an Original Sony G is Fine enough for Me and a Bit cheaper :))
I hope that at least 2 of these new lenses are pancakes, or at least very compact. Maybe something around the 20mm, 40mm or 70mm focal lengths.
a 16mm ff pancake like the original emount would be nice. needs faster than 2.8 though.
Faster than 2.8 won’t be a pancake.
I like Sigma initiative to produce ultra wide under 2x zooms like 18-35 f1.8 DC and new announced 24-35 f2 DG. Wish similar from Sony! Otherwise I will be forced to exchange mine 16-35 f4 Z for the Sigma with Canon adapter ). Also will glad to recieve something like 40-70 and 70-120 f2.
24-70/2.8, non-OSS because of IBIS.
Take your time and make it right this time. Most useful range and many use them. So this is an important lens for the system.
I would love to see faster primes too, in the style of the FE35/1.4.
Add a compact, pancake-ish, wide angle prime.
135/2 and another tele zoom and prime.
Yeah sure, because everyone is using a camera with IBIS…
in the long run.. probably yes. and a good very lens can live 15-20 years while a body is more 3-5 years….
Ideal scenario: A fast 135, a cheap 50, a pancake or two, a 24-120 f4, and an f2.8 zoom to replace the 24-70.
I am happy to say that with the existing lenses, 25, 35, 55, 85, 24 70, not much is missing.
What I really want is 135 batis!
Then I can sell my 135 1.8 A mount.
25 is not wide enough. We need to spread out to at least 16.
Too wide, and you have 16 35.
25 is allready too wide for me.
I gotcha. You’re not a landscape guy.
What is not on the roadmap is a long lens.
With several very expensive, very heavy 600mm f4 and 800mm f5.6 lenses available, and several economical light 150-600mm lenses available, what is needed is a lens in between.
A 300-600 around f5 max aperture ( f 4.8, 5, or 5.6 )
Important features to set this lens aside from others would be…150mm barrel extension…lens would operate normally with barell extender retracted, and in close focus/macro mode with barrel extended.
A drop in slot should be provided for a dedicated 1.8x teleadapter, and drop in filters…..possibly even a .6x focal reducer too.
A holder can store the optics and attach to the lens to make using them easier and quicker.
This lens should sell for a price in between the two extremes…about mid
$3000 range.
Alternatively a 300-800mm f6.3 with similar features.
This would be a unique lens and if built for native fe mount would would fill a huge gap in the lens lineup and give wildlife/sports photographers good reason to buy E mount.
Please though…no big white lens to scare the animals…make it olive green or black.
With a lens that big, Sony could adapt the A-mount lenses, but at this point why not just get an adapter for it? Those niche lenses end up living on a tripod anyway. There’s no benefit of making a native version.
For my needs, its pretty much there already… I skipped the macro in the end (decided I could live without AF) but I might buy a wider prime with AF at some point (a 20/2.8 maybe) or a telephoto (a pending on price)
Yep, something 20ish would be great. I just hope it will be slow and small 🙂
6 at once is a bit much ! Not that I wouldn’t like it, but doesn’t seem so plausible.
You are talking to a brick wall, save your breath.
Ah, perfect for testing distortion.
My wish is as always, pancake vario distagon 12-400mm f1.8.
Why not mount a faster prime and crop afterwards? IMHO 1.5x zoom is useless, when you can get a faster and higher quality prime
because cropping is not the same as using an equivalent focal length..
True, but carrying and paying for a zoom is not the same as carrying and paying for a prime.
An 85 1.4, cropped to 135, will give you the same DOF as 135/2 (crop factor), yet with a light gathering ability of 1.4. Unfortunately the drawback is a loss of resolution due to crop factor.
A 2x zoom, such as 18-35, is already on the border of being useful and the longer you go, the less there is a perceptive change when zooming to an equivalent multiplier vs a wide angle.
I’d rather see a redesigned and improved 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200, all at f2.8, than to see a set of prime wannabe lenses, that are neither as good as primes, nor have as much reach as zooms.
According your logic I just need a single top grade wide angle prime (35/1.4Z) and high megapixel body (A7RII) and I will able to crop whichever I want up to 100mm and even higher ). But as photographer I would like to compose image directly in viewfinder to produce shoots which look finished right from the camera. And ability to vary background perceptive shooting e g portraits looks very tempting for me. In any case I prefer to smoothly cover my working focal length with two or three f2 zooms rather than have four or five f1.4 fixes.
Yea… 1.5 crop is nothing in terms of IQ. I mean, everybody knows there is absolutely no difference between APS-C and FF.
And also, there are so many APS-C primes that are better than Sigma’s 18-35.
i would wish 24-70/2.8ZA & 24/1.4ZA
Me too.
And a FE 70-300.
OK OK OK. I hear you all. So I have the list every lens we want and ever want and we can all sign it (up vote this) and send it to Sony so they know what they are missing. From wide to tele:
10mm in 2.8, f4 (affordable one) and f5.6 pancake
14mm in 2.8, f4 (affordable one) and f5.6 pancake
15mm in f2 for speed and 2.8 for no distortion
18mm f4 and f4 OSS
21mm in f2 for speed, f2.8 for overall performance, f4 for budget and f8 for pancake
24mm in f1.4 for speed and because why not? f2.8 for budget and TS version
28mm in f1.4 for speed and f2 Hollywood variant (C/Y allegory) and f4 OSS for OSS lovers and TS version
35mm f2 for an in between 1.4 and f2.8 size but the performance of the RX1 one and also a TS version
45mm 2.8 pancake and f2 super pancake which showcases how much genius you got.
50mm f0.98 so the whiners can’t whine anymore and also a 2.8 version pancake for those who think 45mm is just too wide but they still want a pacake lens and also a TS version.
55mm with all of the above for the 50mm but for those who want that extra 5mm.
85mm 2.8 for the budget and f4 OSS and also TS version and also 0.95 for you know who that wants to have that matching 0.95 to his 50/55mm lens.
100 Makro Planar, alluring to the Contax Makro Planar legends….make them f1.4 and f2 because you can and also TS MP version because you never know who comes out with what out of their mouths. Oh yes…also an f4 budget with OSS (because the purist 1.4 doesn’t need OSS with macro…hand held… hard core)
120 with defocusing control like Nikon (gimmick? someone out there will defend this) in 1.4, f2, f2.8 and f4 and also TS because the last TS was 20mm too short compared to this one.
135mm with all of the above because 15mm get you closer to whatever.
200mm with all of the above as well
300mm ”
400mm ”
350mm ” (because neither 300mm nor 400mm would do – again, with all options above)
500mm ”
750mm ”
1500mm ” (Barry’s dream set….the Barrytisxia lens set which includes not only a 1.4/f2/f4 and TS variant…but also a 0.95 variant just in case 1.4 is not enough)
3000mm ”
5000mm ”
Let’s not forget that all of the above must come accordingly priced so people also don’t feel like they are being cheated, preferably with a range from $50 (maybe a 50mm f8 can do this) to $350000 so we all know you’re being inclusive.
Ah yes, zooms.
Any zoom range you want in f2, f2.8, f4, TS and defocusing variants as well as OSS and non OSS variants (in case you need to save some $ for that $100 dream zoom which is also pancake, internal focusing and internal zooming too)
OK. I think we got it covered but, as usual, feel free to babble a bit more so they get the idea of WHAT WE NEED YESTERDAY!!!
Why can’t Sony do in one year what Canikon took 20? /s
Where’s the 12mm F3.5?
ADDENDUM:
TS lenses should be AF.
How I confused f stops and T stops, I don’t know, but all apertures I mentioned above should be T stops (obviously, because what else right?)
Lastly, all lenses should be colour corrected to their respective peers:
Zeiss/Zeiss lenses like Batis and Loxia should be colour corrected as to give the exact colour response if you change lenses between their families.
Same goes for Zeiss/Sony.
My suggestion: Zeiss/Sony should be slightly warmer than Zeiss/Zeiss because Zeiss logo is blue. This will help us all identify which lenses were used when we see the SOOC (HAHAHAHAHAA) photographs from respected and skilled testers.
As for me, just give me a compact 85/1.8 to go along the 28/2 and I’m basically set for all my AF needs. If you really want to see me smiling, though, a compact 300mm (like the latest Nikon offering) would be sweet…
Why no APS-C lenses? I don’t want a Full-Frame camera mostly because of the size and weight of the lenses. I want lightweight APS-C lenses.
16-50 2.8 e-mount apsc size
70-400 4-5.6 e-mount
70-300 4-5.6 e-mout apsc size
all G-class
Sony Fiscal Year is Spring to Spring.. so 6 more in 2015 could be 3 before December and next spring. Also at some point Sony is likely to stop doing “roadmaps” road maps just handcuff you ability to be agile in product planning. When they have a decent collection it will be like other products. You will know when it is announced.
How about a $200 50mm f/1.8 – like every other mount.
For what? To people whine about bad quality lenses like they always do?
this is e mount, e for expensive
A 35 1.8 which doesn’t weight and cost like the 1.4
I think we Emounters are desperate for a tele zoom. Something like the 70-400 would be very welcome.
35 mm 2.0 , 85 mm 2.0, 24 mm Shift, 135 mm 2.0, pancake 40 mm , 16 mm , 300 mm ,
A 75mm f1.8.
Sounds like an odd focal length I know (why not 85mm??)
But it would be a ‘concert’ lens (75mm if the longest allowed at many concerts/venues).
I just wrote a reply down below also hinting that Sony should do a 75mm or 70mm prime! I’d like to see an F1.4 though!
True, I forgot, 85mm may be too long for some. WAIT!
Then they’d sell at least two of them (one to you, and one to me) 🙂
Get the Voigtlander and be done with it 🙂
Does this mean as well having a 75mm on a m43 or attached to Nikon 1 series??
I don’t think the people at the door really know about ‘focal length equiv’ – they just go by what is written on the lens/camera. 🙂
That said, often they don’t even check your bag (unless you look suspicious) and even when they do they often don’t look too closely (ie. I can usually get in the Nikon1 with 30-110mm… a 300mm equiv lens… because it looks so small)
Almost every concert I’ve been to, the demarcation line is whether or not it’s an interchangeable lens camera, what they refer to as “profession-style”.
Old outdated rules.
Yes they are. But, as they say, “rules is rules”. And, they are enforced at many concert venues in the US.
Where can the text of the rules be found? 75mm sounds arbitrary, I think in a concert venue the concern is with the physical size of the lens not the actual focal length. An 85 mm prime without the hood attached is actually smaller than a 24-70 zoom.
They’re different from venue-to-venue, and from show-to-show but they can usually be found on the venue’s website, or by calling the venue.
The last couple I’ve been to at the ACC in Toronto interchangeable lenses were allowed… but with a max. focal length of 75mm. I think the rules are beginning to change. At U2 (Jul 7th) they were cool with stills up to 75mm, but no video or audio recording (which I think is petty common now)
Why not just get rid of adapters once and for all? They are not a solution
Yes, they are.
For super-tele people they are already used to adapters, why would that be an issue? The same for the macro and T/S.
I believe the 135 is Sony’s future
Teach photographers well and let it lead the way
Show them all the beauty a 135 possess inside
Give your shots a sense of pride
Make close ups easier
Let the masses lauph in wonder- remind how pro’s use to be
Coffee run! It’s 12:01- is your cup full?
Or at least it would be nice if the a-mount 135 is updated with SSM.
Or maybe something like the minolta 135/2.8…
You do want that lens. I’d write an ode to the wide prime, but I don’t want to steal the show 🙂
Sony and Zeiss have a partnership. Zeiss haven’t never released a redundant lense with the another compagny (For example the touti, 12F2.8, 32F1.8, 50F2.8 macro).
I’m disappointed that Zeiss is relasing a 85F1.8 and not 1.4, because for we will not have a cheap 85F1.8 with Sony.
More pancake Ienses, please !!
I would have :
Sony G 14-28mm
24-70F2.8
Sony G 24-105F4
21mm F2.8
24mm F2 or 2.8 pancake
40mm F2 or 2.8 pancake (same price than the Canon ^^)
50mm F1.4 (same price than the Canon ^^)
50mm F2.8 macro
105mmF2
135mm F2
>”…but they said a fast 85mm prime and tele lenses will be on the new roadmap.”
Look like it gets a habit of Sony to release lenses with similar specs than the Zeiss counterparts.
With the leader and their vulnerability, take a guess at how my private life is counterpointed and with ONLY negative consequence till of course I make it clear to all.
I am a photographer and we won’t be seeing any photography from them.
They are IDENTICAL to the crowd control.
You’re much more coherent today, the medication is working.
You went with it, I spoke to you ONCE or twice and I remember all things such.
You didn’t go against it. On matter of BBC radio for some minority or place I suggested this was positive discrimination: this was from experiences in London and BEFORE all that stuff. you talk about drugs a lot just where/whom are you running from? you are like the psychologist pretending to, acting being something important, without knowing it is nothing at all. Who and what are you working for? Look how framed is the last person who set me against them in an all win all lose. You are losing but you won’t accept so pose a threat to me badly.
Please disregard my last statement, written in error.
I only wonder if he/she talks like that in real life lol.
If this is some sort of parallel, why do you leave alone the incumbent?
I have told you my view: you are totally wrong, I also know photography totally, therefore you are numerous and pose a threat to me but never those who can simply be objectively proven false through freedom of speech, instead the most vulnerable, the one who needs jet stream, you kick in the teeth. Curious way to lose isn’t it. Because you could be no more wrong than even suggest that you are complimentary to my photography, all have seen it and how I do it, it has NOTHING to do with you and you have made my life the real problem, bad where I could, was, would have been, hopefully will with you out of way forever, elevate through photography alone as if by only grace. Is that why you disgrace it? everyone wants to know how you got this wrong and when and what you will do about it. You are only nihilists now.
Contrariwise, if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn’t, it ain’t. That’s logic.
He is either non-native English speaker or has a writing issues – possibly Werneck’s area damage in brain. At least he tries to communicate, even with abracadabra. No one can understand his bla-bla-bla, but thankfully his avatar is bright enough for us to notice it instantly and skip this abradacadbra without even looking.
you’re right about non-native english speaker. the garbage he writes does seem like a google translated foreign language. maybe chinese
He claims to be from the UK and that British English is his first language.
he obviously lied.
how can you be a photographer or anything if you spend all of your time writing garbage in comment sections online? no body cares and it don’t matter because you’re just hiding behind a computer screen to avoid your miserably real life where people would actually shut you up. please take your meds
I recognized the disguise the first day(absolute) didn’t I. You think smart people don’t? And It wasn’t even because I am like that, its because i’m different to that isn’t it. you kick yourself for being too empathetic, friendly, human, and guess what, this is what you’ve become. That was me then, so whats different now. Nothing. I’m different so what am I? totally explicit? I know I can be smart and that you lost when you assumed conceding instead of always working out, the steps could be more effective, as opposed to perpetually just necessarily evil and wrong?
I rarely make mistakes and simply change flow. You’ve lost, whats the point of going on like you haven’t?
u being smart? no. u being the most annoying, YES!
I told you, its what you don’t say anyway.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
Meanwhile, for APS-C E-mount, Sony presents: cobwebs.
A-mount, A-psc etc. All dead.
The a-mount lens line is already built out. As far as being dead, you might be unaware of the fact that Sony has recently released updated versions of the SAL70400G, the SAL70200G, the SAL300F28, the SA1635Z, the SAL2470Z, and the SAL70300G. As I recall, the a77MII (APS-C) was announced just over one year ago. How does that qualify as “dead” exactly?
Yeah. And plenty of credible indications that there was supposed to be a new body last month but it got delayed.
While some have said it’s likely that Sony will wait until the next major “announcement season” for this body due to the delays rather than announce when it’s ready:
1) We know that there’s a contractual agreement between Sony’s sensor business and their sensor customers that they need to wait 6 months after Sony announces their body with the new sensor before announcing anything using the new Sony sensor. We’ve got good confirmation that RicohPentax and Nikon have both been impacted by this sensor delay
2) We know that CP+ is mid-late February 2016 and WPPI is late-Feb/early-March 2016. If Sony delays past mid-August for the next APS-C, it’ll push RicohPentax and Nikon past CP+ which will get Sony’s sensor business into trouble, so Sony is NOT going to delay past mid-August for the mere sake of timing their announcement for the typical fall announcement season – if they delay past then, it’s going to be due to ongoing technical issues with the sensor. (If due to the body, I suspect there’s probably a fallthrough in their contract for an excessively-delayed Sony body.) On a related note – Sony is 1-2 days from impacting any possible CES announcements from RicohPentax or Nikon. Most likely that date is going to be a miss.
I don’t believe there is anything but hearsay and speculation (rumors) regarding point 1) you made. If you have and solid evidence regarding that “6 month” agreement is live to read it.
That’s not particularly convincing – just updates to old lens designs.
If Sony were to announce some genuinely new A-mount lenses, that would convince, but I can’t really see it happening.
But a full frame A-mount body is NOT behind schedule, and we should see an announcement sometime between late August and late September. They would not have just released the SAL2470Z2 and SAL1635Z2 in June if they were ending the system.
Also, as someone who owns SAL300F28G2, SAL70200G2, SAL2470Z2, I can tell you first hand that these updates are radically improved from the original lenses. If you’re an A-mount user, you owe it to yourself to try one!
Well I still have my A700 and 18-70 kit lens, but I’m not sure that really counts!
I obviously can’t really tell you what you should find convincing. That’s strictly a personal decision. But let me pose a couple of questions: Where are the holes in the A-mount line that need to be filled with new lenses? Why is the updating of preexisting lenses any less of a demonstration of a commitment to a-mount than the announcement of an entirely new lens? Sony still has design and production costs that it needs to recover from those updated lenses, just as it would from a newly designed lens. Thus, it needs to have people buy them by producing and selling worthy cameras. What would be worrisome from an a-mount perspective is if Sony was completely static in this area, and it is not. It is still producing a-mount lenses, and it still needs to sell those to somebody. That reality does not change at all, regardless of whether the lens design is wholly new or an improvement of an older version. It is also noteworthy to me that all of those lens updates are to its top of the line lenses (with the exception of the SAL500F40G, but that was just released in 2012, and probably sells in limited numbers because of the price). To me what all this says is that Sony is concentrating on top end with a-mount, and the a99 replacement is going to be a very special camera at a very special price.
Holes? Just look at what Canikon have available.
70-200/4
35/1.4 (a good one)
24-105/4
24-70/4
16-35/4
I came up with that with little effort, but funnily enough I realised most of those are covered by E-mount.
Do you really see those as “holes” or are you just trying to save face? Personally, I don’t see the absence of cheaper, slower, lower-end zooms as holes when Sony offers much better, faster lenses in exactly the same zoom range, The lenses you list might be great lenses for an e-mount (and I expect that is why they may be available in e-mount), not so much for an a-mount. As far as a 35/1.4, did you know that Sony offers the SAL35F14G?
Save face? They are bread and butter lenses for any system. Faster does not mean better – that’s a classic mistake to make. A-mount users have been crying out for a Beercan replacement for years.
And yeah, the 35/1.4 G is well renowned as being pretty awful by today’s standards. That’s a gaping hole right there.
In your failed effort to defend your original silly statement you have completely lost track of the point. As I have tried to show you, all indications are that the a-mount is alive and well. If you are going to try and convince me that there are holes in Sony’s a-mount line up because I can’t buy inferior lenses to the quality lenses which Sony already offers, you are wasting your time (and entirely missing the point). What its come down to for you is this: (1) (according to you) some a-mount users have been “crying out” for a beercan replacement (doubful); (2) whille you have been forced to admit that a 35/1.4 is actually offered in the a-mount line-up, you regard it as “awful by today’s standards” and so pretend that it doesn’t exist (3) you have been forced to admit that Sony does offers a set of superior zoom lenses (all of which are of recent design or have been recently updated) to those which you have identified as “missing,” From these three dubious premises, you have concluded that a-mount is “dead.” That’s just plain silly. I don’t know any other way to put it. Some people just can’t admit when they are wrong I guess. (P.S. I’m not sure what world you are living in, but in my world faster is always better when it comes to zoom lenses. To think otherwise is a classic, silly mistake.)
Oh Jesus.
You’re American, aren’t you?
And you’re not, aren’t you?
Let’s keep nationality out of it shall we? At least you are making more coherent arguments now but they are still totally off point. Its because your original post is so silly, that you are having trouble defending your statement. (Of course, now you are backing away from it.) If you don’t want to have to defend silly statements, don’t make them in the first place. And don’t compound your silliness with non-sequiturs. A-mount is alive and well. Sony continues to prove its commitment to it (as I have shown you). Deal with it. Your responses: People want a 70-200 f4 in a-mount. Not just doubtful, but irrelevant. Why would Sony put a lens in its line that won’t sell to the premium customers it is hoping to attract? The Sony SAL35F14 is not (in your opinion) a very good lens. Irrelevant on two separate levels. You prefer slower, less capable zooms. Also irrelevant on two separate levels. The point is still the point. Sony has a capable set of a-mount lenses that is more than sufficient to satisfy most high-end photographers. (Maybe not you, but then again, I am guessing you are strictly an e-mount guy anyway.) Instead of adding less capable lenses to its a-mount line up (which are probably not going to sell very well in the case of a-mount users) it has taken its best lenses and made them even better (and more expensive). There is no evidence to suggest that a-mount is dead, although e-mount fan boys such as yourself continue to make these silly statements. Indeed, there is abundant evidence to the contrary. I am sorry if I offended you, but you are the one who brought your personal tastes into the conversation, not me. Sony obviously cannot be expected to satisfy everyone’s personal tastes. If your “requirements” cause you to prefer slower, less capable zooms, e-mount is probably your lens line.
I’m sorry, but you really need to use paragraphs.
No doubt we disagree with each other, but clearly you cannot hear another argument – you’re right, I’m wrong is the arrogant gist of your argument. Your arguments are no more or less silly than mine.
You didn’t offend me, but it seems I offended you, otherwise you would not be being so defensive towards the A-mount line. Head, sand, remove it.
You are really starting to bore me now . . . It seems to follow that if you cannot support your original statement, and all the evidence points in the contrary direction, your statement has been exposed as baseless and silly. (While you give yourself credit for making an “argument” in support of this statement, all I saw were personal opinions about what the a-mount line up of lenses should include and I am prettty sure that you don’t even own an a-mount camera.) Isn’t that the way these forums are supposed to work? There are people who post worthy things that expand my knowledge. And there are those who just post silly junk. Why post something on a forum that has no basis in fact? And if you do, shouldn’t you expect that someone will challenge your statement? Who between the two of us is really the one that has their head in the sand? These sites have a “reply” button for a reason. And when someone challenges what you have said, and supports it with real facts, responding to those fact-based arguments by namecalling doesn’t make you look wiser. It’s the coward’s way out. As the old saying goes, “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” I just really don’t understand this irrational jealously that e-mount users harbor towards a-mount, but it appears to be a fact of life.
Erm… I replied to you initially, remember? And I backed up my statement. You disagreed, unlucky, that’s life.
I’m not alone in being unconvinced about Sony’s A-mount commitment. That is an opinion. You seem convinced, great.
Unfortunately you seem to be of the Us vs Them mindset when it comes to A-mount and E-mount. I am jealous of nothing, but I suspect you are pretty insecure about A-mount’s future, hence your aggression and claims that all is great in A-mount land.
Covered by E-mount. Exactly. Who is clamoring for A-mount f/4 zooms? Unless the reach is extended significantly, forget it. Other manufacturers don’t have a smaller full frame system, so the best they can do is make lighter weight f/4 zooms for their big bodies. The only lens on your list that A-mount needs is the updated 35mm f/1.4. f/4 zooms are annoying as helll unless they have a 4x or 5x reach.
If Sony could release some lenses for the apsc Axxxx : for example a new version 16mm2.8 or 18mmF2, 35mmF1.4, 50 or 56mmF1.4, 85mmF1.8 and 16-55mmF2.8, I will keep my camera, otherwise bye bye Sony.
I would love to see an updated 28-135mm F4 if possible making it 20/24 to 135mm or even better 200mm. Not sure if this is on the cards but it would work great with all the a7 cameras and the FS7, F5, F55
Hopefully we see a mix of faster zooms and zooms with more reach, along with a few more primes: 24-70/2.8, 24-105 or 120/4, 100-400/4-5.6, 14/2.8, 21/2.8, 135.2.0, 300/4.
So basically, everything you had on any DSLR FF system…
I’d like to see an ultra wide zoom done in the style of the video centric PZ 28-135 f/4, like either an adaptation of the existing 16-35 or more exciting something a tad bit wider. (and fixes the manual zoom / lag issue)
Hopefully we see some more affordable glass.
The nest lenses are not going to be in the “affordable” range; Sony is going for the higher end. We will see the f2.8 zoom range filled out, some super telephoto and some fast primes.
I don’t think we will see f2.8 zooms.
why do you say that? i did just get the refreshed a-mount 24-70 f2.8 with an adapter
It is less ideal than native lens. The new A7R2 has better focus system than LA-EA4 does and if you use EA4 on 7R2, the body’s AF system would be deactivated. Size, weight and battery drain is just another question.
i got LA-EA3 adapter for that reason, and a-mount is alive. would consider a native zoom lens too if they make f2.8
There are posts from DPR saying SSM lens do not work well with hybrid focus system. You might need to check it out. It probably only uses CDAF and could be slow.
A customer review on B&H said EA3 was very slow with DT1650 on a6000.
PS. Is weather seal still robust with adapters?
haven’t opened the box for the adapter. only got it for a7rii so will have to wait and see.
It might be a better idea to return it for now and buy again when your 7r2 is about to ship. But it’s your money, you know it better than i do. I hope Sony worked something out for you.
got 25% deal thru a friend so got a few sony items while i could. i’m sure i’ll be using it hopefully in near future.
I do hope things work out smoothly. I will wait until next photokina before getting serious with Sony again. I’m hoping a7s ii would surprise me.
Ability to drive a lens with a different motor class is up to the AF algorithm. A6000 doesn’t have it and never did. A7rII on the other hand seems to have an improved AF algorithm, that also works with other brands lenses.
A6100 and A7000 just might inherit the same AF algorithm
And there’s a post on DPR that says Chris is a troll and doesn’t know WTF he’s talking about.
If you are going to disapprove everything i say, i will make the following statement right away: Sony makes the best camera in the world.
I wouldn’t say that it’s better until we see some concrete tests. Specifically around tracking and low light. The latter being more important to me personally. More AF points isn’t always the answer. Give me 1 very good center AF point that is also great in low light, and i’ll be happy.
Have to wait for the answer to turn up.
That lens is better than any E mount 2.8 zoom will ever be. You made a good choice, IMO.
We will. One of the Sony bosses recently said that they are fully aware they need to make f2.8 zooms.
Clever name… but not cool.
We will see the f2.8 zooms. Sony has already basically confirmed this.
Well, that is unfortunate. If I buy a FF Nikon or Canon, I get the kit zoom – which is OK, and I can at the same time purchase a good, bright 50mm prime for about $200 more. If I buy a FE mount body and kit lens – I get a decent kit lens, which isn’t that bright, and what prime can I buy along with it that doesn’t cost an arm and leg? This is why CaNikon is more appealing.
That’s why I haven’t switched over my A mount lenses yet. I have the FE kit lens- but that’s it. I don’t think it’s worth the hassle and- even if I break even on the cost- meh. I’m stuck with slower lenses and no chance of any A mount bodies in the future. Just a personal choice, but we need cheaper options. 28 F2 is not enough.
I might be on board with an A99, but I can’t believe they are still selling for so much. Is Sony just stubborn to drop the price, or are these really still selling?
Sounds like you can’t afford either a good camera or good lenses, just stick with a point and shoot or an Iphone.
Oh snap! Poor people are so annoying. Full frame with premium lenses or just give up on life.
So the most important attribute for a camera system is to offer a cheap 50 mm prime.
Well, I meant the lens selection in general. But a cheap 50, yes that is also important.
So by your logic; buy a high megapixel full frame camera and use only cheap glass that was designed in the film era. Brilliant.
Those lenses are still good lenses. I guess Sony has brainwashed you into thinking you must pay over $1k for a lens or else it sucks right? The Canon or Nikon 50mm 1.8 on a full frame sensor is still a very, very good combo.
I don’t disagree on the price issue. I’m just telling you what I’ve heard from Sony; they are shifting focus to premium quality high-end.
This doesn’t make any sense! Batis 85mm f1.8 just launched and we still have lot’s of other FL’s to cover. So why make plans for another fast 85mm lens?!?! There’s only limited number of lenses to be announced and produced in this and next year (only 8) so why waste it on yet another same 85mm? Sony are you crazy?
We need fast zooms or at least another optically better version of 24-70 f4, or 24-105 f4.
Bottom line is we need optically perfect mid-zoom 24-70 f4 or f2.8 whatever, just make it best IQ zoom out there and sharp across frame.
Sony want to get paid. The Batis only pays Zeiss. 85 is a necessary focal length for OEM’s. Sony doesn’t make one yet so they need to. Maybe it will be a regular Sony and not a “G” with a low price to match the 28/2? Does it make sense now?
A lower cost 50mm to go with the existing 28mm should be a top priority. Plus a Zeiss 24mm and 85mm.
I doubt they will so do this, especially with so many basic lenses to cover, but I’d like to see a focus on high quality, smallish lenses. Something like a 25-50mm f2.8-4 and a 70-200mm f3.5-4.5.
100-400/4-5.6 is all I need
it seems this comment section has been infected with a bug named “IlluminatedObserver”. the only way to stop it is to completely ignore it or it will never go away, like herpes
I don’t want you to reply or even read my posts. Only real people, photographers and those interested but not assured as you are. You are mixing the real commentary like mine with non photographic political matters absolutely.
Just flag all his comments. I find that works exceedingly well.
thoughts on 85mm
a)another 85mm seems like a stupid idea, so itll happen :/
b) recycle the sal85mm 2.8
c)they finaly listened to a mount customers but make the lens in FE mount, so 85mm T/S lens
d) they mean the zeiss lens as it wasnt really on the road map
The 85mm might be good if at an f/2 and compact like the 55mm, but with equally as good optics. But, for now, my money is on the Zeiss 85mm Batis, as it has a rendering I like. But, I would like to see a 70-300mm G or Sony/Zeiss Variable Aperture made available as well as a 24-105mm or 24-120mm made available too. While I would like it to have a constant f/4 aperture, I could accept an f/4~5.6 provided it does not jump to f/5.6 too quickly. Yes, it should have at least the IQ of the 24-70mm ZA FE or better. And, I would be willing to pay the price for it. It is not about cheap glass, but quality compact glass for travel, street and everyday use. And, now that they don’t need in-lens OSS then this is more feasible.
I would also like to see a 125-150 macro lens that is smaller than the 90 FE Macro, even if it does come at the cost of a smaller aperture
EVERYONE! listen…I already made a comprehensive list below. Just vote it up and we’ll Sony a strong message with it. I covered pretty much everything everyone has already mentioned on what they want/need.
You made a idiotic list. All we need are fast zooms 24-70 and/or 24-105 (just a couple would do, since we already have some) and a couple of primes like 135, 200 and 400. Now that’s how you should have done it in the first place. Live and learn!
My zoom wish list:
– 16-35/2.8 Sony/Zeiss
– 40-90/2.8 Sony/Zeiss (I don’t need the wide-angle overlap)
– 100-400/4-5.6 G
Does anyone make a 40-90? That’s an interesting choice.
Did anyone make a full-frame mirrorless before Sony? Sony has been thinking outside of the box. They can’t follow Canonikon. So… who cares that “they” don’t make that focal range. Start from scratch; think about what makes the most sense. 16-35 and 40-90 and 100-400 would be my wish list. 😉
#ThinkingOutsideTheBox
Gotcha. I’m just thinking if the focal length have ever been done. Yeah, I dig it. I’d buy it.
I’d prefer a little overlap I think. 16-35, 28-105, 80-200. The small amount of overlap could be the difference in having to change lenses or not. With mirrorless’s exposed sensor I prefer to change lenses as little as possible to avoid dirt and dust.
35mm-85mm to compliment the 16-35.
Just curious – why 100-400? Sony have never made such lens, Canon do. Sony have a stellar 70-400 SSM II, why lose on the wider angle and start from 100?
Why you need 16-35/2.8. It is going to be big and heavy similar to the A mount lens or Canon’s . A 14/2.8 with AF seems more desirable
A 14/2.8 would be nice.
But, sometimes it’s nice to have a little range. In landscape, sometimes it’s hard to be standing in the exact spot you want to be and having a zoom range is helpful. Why the 2.8? The open aperture helps for night and low light photography. For example, with f4, you’d have to leave the shutter open for so long that you’d begin to see star trails.
I love primes, though. I would definitely consider a 14 or 16 (or something in that range) prime. How about a Zeiss Batis 16/2?
Sounds great! Sony definitely need a bit more than the 16-35/4 which is not a bad lens. I would prefer something seriously wide like 11 or 12mm. I have been looking at the Samyang 12mm fish but it is not yet in stores around me.
My wish list:
85mm G or standard f/2.0 or so lens as a cheaper alternative to the Batis.
24mm f/2.0 Lens that Tamron just filed a patent for
And I see no reason why we can’t have a compact 50mm f/1.4 for the FE system either.
Ideally I’d like some fast lenses that are sharp/built well like the 28mm FE that aren’t ~$1000 or more like the rest of the Sony/Zeiss lineup is.
A fast 135mm with OSS and weatherproofing would be nice.
Just lenses under $799 please and a stellar bargain in there as well a la the Oly 45 or Canon 50mm. They dont have to be marvels, just consumer lenses for consumer cameras.
Here we go again:
24-70 f2.8
24-70 f4 II with much less distortion
35 pancake
50 f.95
De-click zoom ring feature.
sure, and all for 399$
Ehhh what??
How much smaller do you need a 35mm to be? Honestly the number of different requests for 35mm lenses is absurd.
A pro line that doesn’t make us suffer fly-by-wire? Yes… Pah-LEEEEZE!
Manual focus, screw drive, SSM… anything but fly-wire.
I was very skeptic about fly-by-wire too, until I had a chance to try the new 90/2.8 Macro on a real shoot last week. It felt MUCH more responsive and precise than the 55/1.8. If all the new lenses behave like 90/2.8 Macro, I would be OK with that.
FE 24-70mm f2.8 Zeiss
FE 24-105mm f4 Sony
FE 24mm f2 Sony
FE 135mm f1.8 Zeiss
FE 70-200mm f2.8 Sony G
FE 300mm f2.8 Sony G
FE 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 Sony G
FE 70-400mmf4.5-5.6 Sony G
FE 400mm f4 Sony G
FE 100-600mm f4.5-5.6 Sony G
For A-Mount
35mm f1.4 new version
135mm 1.8 update with SSM
100-600mm f4.5-5-6
You can adapt nearly every manual focus lens ever made.
Thank you Captain Obvious. Not what Sony had in mind for a profitable business model.
Unrelated to my request. I don’t recall anyone ever asking for fly-by-wire lenses. I’ve heard no argument in their favor.
All I hear is…
“Use other lenses…”
“It’s not that bad…”
“Stop whining…”
“Troll…”
But I’ve yet to hear how fly-by-wire is actually beneficial to photographers. I hear, and experience many reasons how it hurts photographers by crippling performance on numerous levels.
So… care to comment on my actual request? Or just tell me to move along and
How do I get AF with those lenses Ian?
24-105mm f4 Sony – would be great
70-200mm f2.8 Sigma or Sony or whatever, would be great
20 f1.8, 24 f1.4, 35f1.4 light weight, 85f1.4, 135f1.8, 300f4.
Add 50f1.2
For telephoto… I don’t need/want the semi-normal range of 70. When it comes to telephoto, for me, personally, I’d like to just get started at 100 and reach out from there.
For zooms… 16-35…40-90…100-400… that’s the range I’d create. Sounds strange/different, I know. But, it seems right for me.
And, I love primes: 16 – 25 – 55 – 85 – 135.
35 1.8 that focuses closer than the 2.8, and is significantly smaller than the 1.4. That would probably never leave my camera. An RX1 (2) with that lens would be great as well.
it already exists, it’s called Loxia
No, it’s called adapted Amount or Canon EF… because autofocus shouldn’t come at the expense of fly-by-wire deficiencies.
135 F2.0 STF AF, and that’s game over.
But I believe a new 135mm is coming out anyway, since it’s the only focal length that sony/minolta has dominated for so long(except the zeiss APO)
STF would mean its manual focus. Its not really that much of a game changer though.
Id like to see more Cinema style lenses like the 28-135 f/4
+1 !
A 24-70 f2.8 cine style would be fantastic. and would sell like hot cakes even at $3000
My wish would be for a 300mm f4
400mm f/5.6 please!!!!!!
Another vote for 135mm and/or 200mm f2 with high quality IQ and build.
FE 28mm is nice ,however, still want the FE 55mm quality. My FE 28mm will more likely ends up on ebay once batis lenses arrived.
Not Interested, But I am interested in an A-Mount Body Roadmap.
i wish sony will come with :
– FE sony zeiss 90mm/1.8 or compact and easy choice lens FE G 85mm f/2.0,
– FE sony zeiss 135mm/2.0
– FE G 21mm/2.8 or FE G 18mm/2.8
– FE G 200mm/2.8
24-70 f2.8
24-105 f4
Sony will make these lenses, I have no doubt!
I am really hoping for a longer Mid-zoom. 24-70mm is too short for a walk around and the 24-240mm is too big. I would love to see a 24-105mm f/4 or even better a 28-135! 🙂 I would settle for a nice 70-300mm if it were not crazy expensive and had decent glass.
How about an affordable, compact ‘walkabout’ zoom for APS-C?
Nope, because APS-C E-mount doesn’t matter under the current regime (or basically anything else except FF E-mount and 1″ sensor RX Cybershots)
Another SAR article, another day of me hoping Kimio Maki gets replaced as the head of Sony’s photo division…
First, The Carl Zeiss Sonnar 135mm f/1.8 is Sony’s silver bullet for portraiture. It needs to be updated w/ SSM and then it will be almost perfect. I would be surprised if they ever managed to add OSS into it w/o degrading its IQ.
Second, please check out the current market. Almost everyone I know now is buying a mechanized gimbal for their a7s. Only Sony mirrorless camera is capable of producing this type of lightweight setup and still able to give the best video quality. The 16-35/4 and 24-70/4 is too heavy for a lightweight gimbal setup therefore you need to produce a lens that will be suitable in conjunction with this type of setup. Lightweight Zeiss 16/2.8, 20/2.8, 24/2.8 primes with OSS would be perfect for this type of setup. They can even be used for aerial drone due to their lightweight and compact form factor like the Zeiss 35/2.8.
And last, the APC crowd badly needs a workhorse zoom lens. E 16-50/2.8 and E 50-150/2.8 would totally calm them down. The Samsung NX1 was ready from the very start with their duo zoom lenses. Sony was years ahead of Samsung yet there’s no f/2.8 zoom option for their users. It’s unbelievable especially now that the A6000 is gaining good reputation w/ wedding photographers and videographers and even sports shooters.
And one more, A flash module that doesn’t overheat after 20 consecutive pops. I want to throw away my Sony HVL-F60M out of frustration sometimes because it overheats on me. Its overheating issue gets me therefore I get the same feeling grr LOL. If it’s even possible for the engineers to design a flash with built in radiator/heatsink please do or maybe give us an option to disable the auto-shut off feature.
I want to see the whole camera lens ecosystem improve because I’m already heavily invested in Sony/Zeiss system. Everything I said was from a real working environment and personal experience as a customer and customers are always right therefore listen to us LOL. Thank you for listening! <3 🙂
Totally agree with the APS-C 2.8 zooms. I’m surprised the a7S would need a stabilized wide angle lens on a gimbal. I would think just a little work in post would totally smooth that out?
and also compact APS-C f/2,8 (or f/2) prime tele!!!!
LOL the fanboys have been crying for fast zooms since the a6000 was introduced. And the a7000 is about to be introduced and there’s still no fast zooms to complement it…… Like really!
I think the stabilization should happen in camera w/ lens OSS pitch and yaw axis only because the IBIS X, Y and roll axis can sometimes work against the gimbal’s own axis so I hope there’s an option to turn them off. The A7S has no IBIS and they might add it on II so I hope we will get this option.
And when you fix things in post it will just degrade the video quality to lower resolution which is terrible to look at especially when you up-sample the software stabilized footage back to 1080p. Ghosting effect and distortion can also be introduced by the software so I think it would be better if stabilization is all done in camera’s original video file.
I just want a Zeiss quality 16/2.8 prime w/ OSS that can facial track fast and silent. I would even be fine w/ an f/4 as long it’s lightweight and compact.
I think Sony E-mount camera owners have wanted a fast zoom since the NEX-7 shipped in October of 2011. But anyway…
Sony might make a stabilized wide zoom but I doubt it- and most certainly not Zeiss- given that they put stabilization in their 85mm Batis but not in the 25mm version.
Still from what I’ve experienced with wide angle lenses on a glidecam, no less a gimbal, there usually isn’t much to stabilize in post.
Unless you’re talking about drone stuff, in which case I can’t say much, other than fast vibration can’t normally be conpensated for with OSS, etc. you usually need a bigger drone.
Stabilization correction in Premiere CC 2015 is pretty amazing. I don’t shoot movies but I’m particular, and I am able to correct some stuff that a couple years ago wasn’t correctable.
You could attach Canon’s 24mm EF f/2.8 with IS also. That’s my only recommendation off hand for a lens.
24-70 f2.8
70-200 f2.8
135 f1.8
200 f2
20 f1.8
15 f.2,8
16-35 f.2,8
50-150 f.2,8
Why another 85?
To differentiate from big and “not so light” 470 gram 85 Batis,
just release a simple and compact 100 F2 with no OSS, no Macro.
IQ can be either like FE55 or FE28 (and their corresponding price).
Then viola! First native compact tele-prime choice for FE mount.
And there may be some kind of teleconverter to match this lens (like wide converter for FE28).
+1
I suppose compact inexpensive 100 – 110mm f2 tele-prime for portraits would be great choice for me instead of 85 + 135 pair ).
I don’t know why they made that amazing cine zoom for full frame. With all the brilliant S35 cameras they have- and only the a7S that’d be paired with it now- it makes not a bit of sense. That lens on the FS7 as a true full range lens would be incredible.
135 2.8
I agree with 135mm but it MUST be F1.8 for it to be usable for events, concerts and low light
I hate to say it but I see the A mount being fully dead soon. Yes they launched 2 new lenses and they MIGHT release 1 last A mount body…. but the way they are pushing the FE mount is too strong to ignore. Financially, it makes no sense to keep both when 1 is clearly leading the market and making huge steps forward.
If would make sense if one was leading and one was a more niche product, but they’re eliminating the differences one by one and it certainly won’t make sense to keep to identical lines
The only bastion still standing is native lenses… and that will fall with the arrival of FE f/2.8 zooms
In my opinion, if they did a stronger weather-sealed body for the (first)A7 series and make a “pro” grip where you change the whole grip like in film SLR, with aditional SD card slot and bigger battery could solve this problem.
Thinking about it, I’d take a 20/2.8 or 20/3.5 if it was about the same size as the 35/2.8.
I bet it’s a beautiful lens! But at many venue’s (especially a concert with changing and extreme lighting) I find I have my hands full adjusting the ISO, getting correct exposure, appropriate shutter speed, etc. Having to manually focus as well would likely give me an aneurysm 🙂
24-70 f2.8 & 70-200 f2.8 are the ones that sony needs the most for wedding photographers. The bread and butter of the photography industry.
I would like to an FE version of the SAL135F18z. 135mm F1.8.
