(SR3) Some sort of Sony small (videostuff?) announcement on July 26th.

A SAR friend posted a small rumor on our SonyAlphaRumors Facebook page (Click here). He said that Sony will have a small announcement on July 26th that possible has to do with the NEX-FS700. This is a super great NEX camera with a not so super available NEX lens range 🙂

One more thing: There seems to be a small surprise for the late August Sony announcement. There is not only an A99 and NEX-5F coming. Keep your expectations low, it’s not another FF SLT or a new FF mirrorless. I will share the info as soon as I can confirm it via trusted sources.

Back to facebook. I never really pushed the SAR community on Facebook. I think it’s a great tool to read SAR news and get in contact with me. So feel free to click on the “Like” button 😉

  1. However, the URL ends with “xdcam”

    http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcam/

so it’s not FS700 related, which are Nex line, not xdcam line.

I am betting this is fixed lens camcorder that will be an upgrade to EX1 and EX3 that were smaller sensor fixed lens camcorders.

It will be aimed at journalists/news reporters. Maybe EX5 with a bigger sensor?

  2. It could be the 4k recorder, or it could be the motorized lens that works with the zoom rocker on the FS700… But who knows.

  3. We have
    16mm f2.8 (+the wideangle converters)
    19mm f2.8
    24mm f1.8
    30mm.f2.8
    50mm f1.8
    a 18mm-55mm
    a 18mm-200mm

How many more lenses does one want for video?

I found myself just using the 24mm zeiss and the 18-55mm for video.

    1. Well, that’s what I’m usually saying myself, that this would be a nearly complete range already if these lenses were in stock and available if one really needs them. Even the SEL-16F28 and the two converters are sometimes difficult to get, nevertheless their quality imitations only matter with photography but not for video. So the so called consumer & advanced amateur range are sort of complete already, while professionals would use something like this anyway: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/zeiss-announces-the-cp-2-adapter-for-e-mount/

    2. Plus we have:

      Samyang/Rokinon 8mm f2.8 fisheye,
      SLR Magic 23mm f1.7,
      SLR Magic 28mm f2.8,
SLR Magic Hyper Prime 50mm f0,95,

but we (may be me only?) desperately need the wide angle zoom lens for NEX, which has been anounced already a long time ago. Any news Andrea?

      1. No, only native E-Mount lenses do count here:

        1. no adapter required
        2. aperture is controlled by the camera
        3. autofocus works and is displayed on NEX display
        4. lens data is transferred to EXIF

I’d like to be generous with the VCL-ECU1 & VCL-ECF1 converters on SEL-16F28 when it comes to 4, but that’s definitely the limit, while NEX-7 users might not count these 10, 12 & 16mm options because of not performing well with their high resolution sensor.

      2. The SLR Magic 23mm was still-born. It does not exist except in a few review samples that were sold to early adopters and in SLR Magic’s Hong Kong store. Canon’s upcoming M-mount system makes me really hope for a comparable 22mm f2.0 smallish prime.

  4. I’m expecting some form of “XDCAM-4k” codec in the near future. In order for 4k to grow, we need a simple compressed format that we can deliver easily to each other. Once a standardized 4k codec is complete, Sony can finaly begin to build new camcorders around it. The new HEVC (h.265) MPEG codec will be radified in Q1 of next year. This will finaly get 4k moving for the cosumer and broadcaster.

Could be a new EX5 also. That means I gotta sell my Sony EX1r!!

  5. Vg-30???

What happened to the advanced NEX that is supposed to replace nex-7. Hoax?

    Any firmware news?

    1. I love my VG20 but I’m told the entire VG10-20 line has not sold as well as Sony expected. I got a feeling Sony will dump the form factor and move it to a new model. The major problem is pixel count. The higher megapixels, the more video data that needs to be thrown away. High megapixels is very bad for video when the optimum is 2 megapixels.

Why use a 24 megapixel sensor when the camera throws away 22 megapixels to make a 1920×1080 image.

      1. Sony’s own missteps with the VG line is the one and only reason sales have been slow. I was set to buy a VG20 (and sell my 5d2 to fund the purchase) until it was revealed that Sony did not include the image profiles/adjustments that the 5n has – despite advertising customizable picture profiles before the camera was released. It makes no sense to not include them on the VG – a camera that clearly does not compete with the 5n.

I wound up buying a FS100 and I have a 5n – but I still really want a VG20 for the smaller than FS100 form factor. I will not buy a camera without the ability to tone down the overdone colors and sharpness that everyone bakes into its standard image profiles, maybe Sony gets it right with the VG30.

As to the rumor from the main post, the announcement on the 26th has long been rumored to be XDCAM, those in the know have been saying that for awhile.
