Yesterday two anonymous sources sent me two different A6100 specs. I got two updates to report: The first source who said the A6100 has no 4K is plain wrong. And a third new source shared some more specs tonight. But also in that case I am really sceptic about the specs validity:
32mp BSI
5-axis IBIS
Much better ISO
4K
285 PDAF points
New EVF (larger T* viewfinder 0.75x)
14.5fps
Smaller than A6000, less weight too
No weather sealing
Mic-input
Only comes in black
Still, this info is coming from a new source so take it with a grain of salt. All I know from trusted sources is that a new A6xxx is definitely coming in September or early October at max.
Full September 11 announcement rumor recap:
SR5 (two trusted source confirmed this): New Sony PXW-FS5 E-mount camcorder. S35 sensors. 4K internally, but 8 bit XAVC-L (note the L) 100 Mbit max. No HFR as far as I can tell, 30fps max in 4K. Looks like a baby FS7. Price will be between old FS700 and current FS7, likely $5,000-6,500 USD. Differentiation on FS7 is much better CODEC, higher frame rates (incl 60p 4K), option for RAW and ProRes, bigger build.
SR4 (one trusted source heard this): Sony will announce 7 new lenses (some in development and some for real). Among them we have new FE telephoto lens(es), fast portrait prime, 24-70mm GM and maybe some “Updated” A-mount lenses.
SR4 (two trusted source heard about this): A60000 successor to be announced between now and PhotoPlus. Note: The rumor is not SR5 because it happened once that Sony delayed the announcement of that camera. Don’t want to bring bad luck again 🙂
SR3 (one anonymous source): New A6000 successor to be announced on September 11.
Tomorrow (September 11) Sony will have a press announcement at 9am Berlin time. You can follow the live videostream here on SAR!

Andrea – how do you know that first source is plain wrong? It makes sense that they are, as no 4k seems ridiculous, but I’m just curious how they were definitively shot down.
The spec list looks great, if accurate, though I’m not sure I’d really want a smaller body. The current a6000 is small enough, maybe even a bit too small. If they go too much smaller, I think ergonomics starts to become an issue, especially when attaching the slightly larger zoom lenses.
Trusted source said that source 1 is definitely wrong.
This thing has got to be a GX8 killing machine. Panasonic makes dandy gear and to get anyone and everyone to abandon their respective ships will take an uber entry model of great repute. I’m still In the SLT camp and won’t budge until something revelatory come down the pike. Can’t afford a new camera each year like the rest of you photo gluttons!
Someone is claiming the new camcorder is called the FS5 and it uses the A7s sensor:
http://cinescopophilia.com/sony-pxw-fs5-is-the-name-of-the-new-fs-4k-camera-coming-to-ibc-2015/
We’ll see soon enough.
Spot on.
Nice, I’ll finally have something more reasonable to slap my 28-135 F4 onto! Make it… I dunno, $3,500? Ok, fine – $3,999 and it’s a deal.
Feels more like $5k+ as it would occupy the same space as the C100mkII with a larger sensor. We’ll see…
Seems like wishful thinking, moreover uneducated one. 0.75x VF magnification is big, but in a FF camera. For APSC ones, values in excess of 1x are not uncommon, so at least this one detail was simply copied from A7rII specs.
The largest APS-C viewfinder is the Fuji X-T1 at 0.77x
I have a 1.04x in my A57 (but it’s LCD).
i wonder how difficult it will be to give up APS-C all together and just make s35 sensor instead, then they have all the ammo they need for marketing material. and most, if not all, E mount lens will cover s35 image circle. hmmm……
Best request ever, I second.
The lens I want is 300-600 f4.8 with 150mm barrel extender for close up / macro and drop in 1.8x teleconverter priced in mid $3000 range.
You are probably in the .000000001 percentile for someone who would want a very specific lens like that
With 8 billion people living on earth, the percentile is 10 times bigger. And with me the correct number is 0,00000002%
🙂
Just look at the price of the 500/4 and think about it 🙂
These are great improvements if true. I wonder how much it’ll cost. Body only under $600 will be incredible, but I kind of doubt it, because sans the sensor size, the specs are as good as an a7IIr.
If Canon plans to built a 120mp camera …as they say, and I expect they will…I certainly hope Sony makes one too so I do not have to switch systems.
It seems that a camera as small as the a6000, to add IBIS there is no way it could be smaller. I’d love to be wrong though.
Maybe they did it by eliminating the LCD – joking, but sort of not, an EVF only compact shooting machine would be a nice dream of mine, but obviously a super niche product and not inline with mega-sales driven Sony.
Smaller than A6000 but with IBIS and bigger EVF? Highly unlikely
The NEX7 is a bit thinner, but nothing that could say it’s smaller.
Lower weight and IBIS? I don’t think so…
Bring on that new RX1 with curved sensor!
Sounds like a $1000 USD camera.
My money is on $799
With IBIS and 4K and fast AF light A7rII $1200 is more realistic.
The feature set seems incredible if true. A6100 will definitely be over $1K. However, these features would be completely consistent with Sony’s strategy of throwing the kitchen sink at the most recent body, increasing the price, and continuing to sell the older model at a lower price point.
BTW, $1000 with this feature set would be a steal. Consider that the RX100-4 is already selling for $1K with much less capability (besides size). I would imagine that some people might buy the A6100 instead of the A7II.
Smaller, lighter while at the same time adding 4K, IBIS, bigger EVF, and a mic input? That’s definitely not happening.
You can do IBIS and 4K, but you’d have to make the body bigger and a little heavier to make room for it and throw in cooling mechanisms, and honestly, that’s not a bad thing. I think Sony are a little too focused on making the darn thing small that they deliberately sacrifice the optics to get that smaller size… that’s why there are no fast zooms native to the E-mount. M43 and X mount has them — sure, they’re galactically expensive, but they exist.
Honestly don’t care that much about 14.5 fps, more PDAF points, or better ISO perf since the A6000 was already quite good in these regards, and any manufacturer claims of improved ISO perf are always incremental. Mic input, IBIS, and weather sealing are the big ones for me. Fully articulating screen is a plus, but only 90% necessity rather than 100%. The “only comes in black” part raises an eyebrow for me because of all the tales of the painted hotshoe on the A6000… I just hope we don’t get a repeat of that fiasco
Either way, it’s not like there’s any chance of an announcement. This has become vaporware. Though I say that with the insignificantly tiny glimmer of false hope that I’ll be wrong, but I hold precisely zero expectation that I will be.
The Duke Nukem Forever of cameras..
Every features of this list would be great to me but in a larger body with weather seal would make it the APS-C perfect camera.
“Still, this info is coming from a new source so take it with a grain of salt.”
There you go, pure imagination, those specs are simply not possible.
My guess is that the specs are possible but they would not be released this year. In the world we live in today where tech companies dole out updates in piecemeal, this list is like 6 or 7 years worth of “updates” to the camera. Heck the Sony A7 series still hasn’t gotten a touch screen yet as if that is some breaking technology today lol.
The IBIS claim does not sound realistic at all. I can’t understand which Source it comes from, but I think such source should be ignored.
Firstly, it would make the body even larger, while it is relatively large (for a NEX series camera), and secondly, it would make much more sense if Sony put IBIS in a weather sealed “pro” level A7000/A9000.
If they put it in the A6100 there will be a huge gap between A5100 and A6100, both in terms of features and price.
How about that Otus and Loxia rumor?
It was a new line of lenses for DSLR.
Sorry Martin that sounds brutal. The only thing I would say is that the A77 isn’t that old yet, and while the system does need more lenses, you do still have most bases covered. Canon users waited far far longer for a 7d Mk2 and Nikon users never got a D300 Mk2..
Ibis is nice, improved IQ for high ISO is better. Howevwer, I think most important for me is quick AF with A mount lenses.
So nothing in the A mount alpha line, i think its dead, and from a professional’s perspective who has sunk in loads of $$$ in lenses, its terrible, leaving anyone who chose to give it a shot and go with the a mount behind, Canon baby, here we go! And dont tell me that the a7 series would be a terrific replacement with a converter for all my A glass, i shoot sports, these arent sports cameras and will never be
Yes they will never be, because you can see the future. 😉
you seriously typed up an answer like this?? lol
Sorry Martin that sounds brutal. The only thing I would say is that the A77 isn’t old yet, and while the system does need more lenses, you do still have many bases covered. Canon users waited far far longer for a 7d Mk2 and Nikon users never got a D300 successor. Sony might re-engage with A mount at some point, it would be great if they can compete their system.
A lot of people want an A99 successor, but without Googling is the A99 much older than the 5Diii that everyone at Canon still seems very happy with?
My biggest need is cleaner ISO ability. I used to shoot with the a77 when it came out, indoors it turned quite noisy over 1250, then i made the jump to the a99, yes a bit slower in frame rate at i think 6 fps, but better iso range. Still tho it gets busy at 3200/4000. I had my hopes up with the a7 releases, the noise is non existent at those levels or higher, and thought they would bundle all that up into a new mighty a99ii model, im at a point where i need longer glass then the 70-200, ready to pull the trigger for a 300 f2.8 lens and further down the road the 500mm but not if the body cant cope with higher ISO ranges, hence my dilemma.
The fact is Sony is not serious about photography. Since they see they pull people from canikon offering topsensor in a subpar body with less features A mounters are not important for them.
Pro service prefers plastic mounts and rejects the A77ii the sports camera. Don’t waste your hard earned money on these honorless people. They care a sh!t about your needs they care only about your $$$.
If A mount is still active why did’t they put a bigger sensor into the A99 and call it A99r. They replaced A7r and Amounters are still waiting. The reason is the new Management has no interest in Minolta’s legacy. They can hook canikon and sony fanboy for cheaper. Good sensor meh Af,less feature, sh!tty adapter so they move to native
I agree with you about A7 series is not for sports, I have tried A7 and A7R with EA4 adapter , the biggest problem both cameras suffer from is AF speed, the no.2 problem was shutter lag.
In the other hand, Sony didn’t stop making A-mount cameras, all A-mount cameras have 3 years life before announcing the successor unlike E-mount cameras, A7 And A6000 are being upgraded every year.
Nothing new here
The only problem is that when A-mount users keep watching E-mount camera and lens releases they get jealous ;p
There is no time for jealous sadly, it a matter of cutting losses, I dont need to be a fan boy, I need things that work
I apologize , it was a bad joke.
All I meant to say is that there is no delay in releasing A-mount cameras or lenses, Sony is pushing E-mount releases that’s all.
Of course they are ive seen this for the past while now. Maybe im coming across rather harsh, but ive gone with the A mount line since the a100 when i knew nothing of photography, through to now what is a decent career in sports photography, and I feel a bit screwed over when I see them just go with the next line, leaving a mount users to die off with their gear
These are not sports cameras but I don’t know about the never will be part. I think in a few years you may change your mind.
the reality is a busy photographer with a career cant wait a few years, this isnt a hobby run, but I depend on further development, low light ISO needs further development in the A mount series, and it needs to come with a serious fast focusing camera, not the a series
What camera are you shooting sports with? The A77ii?
I shoot sports with A77
outdoor in daytime conditions i use the a77, and the a99 for that as well or anything under the lights or indoors. I know the a99 is a much slower fps camera but its better in low light, and i can live with the 6 fps
SLT was just a bad idea to begin with.
A mount users made a bad decision when they chose their system.
Yes, definitely move to Canon if you’re shooting sports.
They got the lens and camera for that.
I hope Sony will have the lineup in the near future.
I wouldnt mind waiting for the lens line up to strengthen as long as there was a body that could dish out clean photos at higher iso numbers, I would be satisfied with the 300 f2.8 and 500 f4 if they would throw that nice very capable at high ISO levels censor from the a7’s series but im starting to loose patience lol
IBIS or Smaller than A6000, I doubt they can pull off both. I hope they choose IBIS
Could be that they’ll announce the A6100 on Friday and the A7000 in October (or other way around).. These specs sound awesome, exactly what I was hoping for, but I hope the body isn’t smaller than A6000, hope it’s a bit bigger with larger buttons/controls (well that could be A7000 I guess).
32mp -> 5DSR killer. 😀
While most of those specs are possible, no way it get smaller AND lighter with the addition of 4k and IBIS, one adds size/weight to the body and the other creates heat issues that a smaller body can’t address. The A7 > A7II gave us roughly a 20% increase in weight and thickness. The A7r > A7rII is slightly thicker and heavier than the A7II. The current A6000 has a number of complaints about 1080p overheating, double the bitrate and more pixels to readout for 4k and the amount of heat generated will increase significantly.
Then I say quit burdening still cameras with video features that many of us will never use.
There’s no such thing as a “still camera” in Sony’s current lineup. *facepalm*
I get that. But if they’re stymied by trying to mash high-end video features into cameras that are physically too small to manage the heat of the electronics – something has to give.
My comment was directed about the size aspect of the rumor, its not going to get any smaller. IBIS is the main size culprit and it has extensive benefits on the stills side as well.
Many won’t but most will.
yeah hard to imagine how they could do 5axis ibis and be smaller, nex line is pretty vacum packed already.
shame sony seems utterly blinkered by mirrorless and has just done so little for a mount users, nearly a year later and no 5axis ibis…. for the camera line with no in lens os apart from some sigma lenses
Actually it’s easy to imagine how this could work:
The size of the body is measured in 3 dimensions.
Maybe A6000-successor is just a little narrower and maybe shorter than A6000.
But maybe a little thicker.
They could make it wider like the Ricoh GR, that is quite thin but pretty wide.
Ew.
Some month ago I had the suspicion that the delay of the A7000/A6100 with IBIS and BSI causes a postpone of APS-C lenses, too. Now are 7 lenses to be announced together with the new body
– because the lenses work only with the new body really good
– because the lenses have no OIS
– and because the lenses show stuff like fringing and vignetting on FSI sensors
=>The lenses are quite small for their specs !
Interesting observation.
I’ll be stunned if any of those lenses are APSC
Yeah, not holding my breath either.
But the Lens Roadmap clearly sayt it’s for FF e-mount.
That camera could be a replacement to my excellent A5000 – although hope they have done something about the overheating issue with the A7r MK 2 when shooting 4k video.
to many megapixels 32 = no full readout in 4k 0 pixel binning = aliased and moired video = trash camera.
Go to GH4 with VLOG or if you can afford a7rII that do full readout at 4k S35 crop
Could it be the Sony a9?
Given Canon is appearing to sh*t itself with all these so called “developments” do they know something we don’t?
80MP FF, 8K internal!
All i want is a A99II… its mid September.. so better dont fuck this up sony !
Well I think it’s getting to a decision point for me. If there’s no announcement tomorrow, of something like an a6100/a7000, I think I give up waiting for an upgrade to my a6000 and go in another direction. I really don’t want FF but, if APS-C is in fact dead, Sony will never actually say so and will just leave users twisting in the wind forever. It will be up to us to decide when to move on. And after a year of rumors of an a6000 follow-on that never happens, it’s starting to smell a bit like road kill.
I doubt they will leave APS-C to die. Anyway, why is there an urgent need to upgrade now? It’s not like the a6000 will stop being a great camera and you can use APS-C and FF lenses on it. The a6000 is not even 2 years old and is far from obsolete.
But you’re talking to a guy that used a Canon 60D for 4 years and an iPhone 4s for 3 (still going).
I’m an a6000 user and, honestly, I don’t think I would feel compelled to upgrade for anything other than a more rugged, weather-sealed body. The a6000 is still a serious competitor all around and when it comes to IQ it’s fantastic. Additional features and improved sensor tech would only yield marginal improvements, I think.
a6000 is great. People are just gear heads.
Agreed on all points. Here’s the deal: I like it so much that I sold my Nikon DX gear and now use the a6000 for everything. One big reason was being able to do everything – DOF, focus magnification, menus and settings – through the EVF, without glasses. This is a huge thing to me, and makes me want an even better EVF – bigger and with more resolution. I’d also like better low-light sensor performance. And really, that’s about it. What I REALLY want is that announcement tomorrow…
Of course, I won’t deny that I, too, *want* a better camera. I just can’t say I *need* one.
Well I’ve realized that a better EVF would make a big difference for me. So I’d like to get one. But at the same time, I’m not really buying the FF hype, and very much want to stay with the small, light a6000 sort of body.
I agree. A big, expensive sensor never really appealed to me. I’m sure us APS-C guys will get some good stuff… it’d be nice to see some crop sensor lenses too…
I can’t believe people are freaking out about the a6000 successor already. It was just released last year!!
Jeez, way to exaggerate. APSC is not dead, nor will it be in an extremely long time. Why? Cheaper cameras and lenses that are in a price range that normal people can buy instead of spending thousands in equipment, and manufacturers get great yields per wafer on these sensors.
Calm down. Even if nothing is announced tomorrow, there IS going to be an a6000 successor, within the next 6-12 months. Thinking otherwise shows willful ignorance of the market’s direction in the past few years and specially Sony’s track record.
Patience, friend. Your a6000 is one of the best APSC in the market still, and it will probably only be bested by its own successor. If you can’t get better gear, what’s the rush? I’m still on a 5N and I guarantee you cannot get better images than me just because of your a6000. Photography is in you, not in your camera body.
A99 II, did it make SR1? lol
If they manage to put a IBIS in a camera with the size of a GX8 will be already a remarkable achievement.
does anyone think that September 11th and a Friday seem a little odd for an announcement?
for starters 9-11 carries a rather special significance.
secondly doesn’t Sony usually announce earlier in the week – I checked back a ways, I couldn’t see any Thursday or Friday announcements..
A7R – oct 16th, 2013 wednesday
A7S – April 6th, 2014 sunday (weird .. NAB?)
A5100 – Aug 18, 2014 monday
A6000 – Feb 11, 2014 tuesday.
A7RM2 – June 10, 2015 wednesday
now the IBC show is on which is why sept 11th makes sense for video – but when’s the last time sony’s done a friday major camera release?
Business as usual. Don’t let the terrorists win!
well that actually makes sense, as the A7S was announced at NAB and A7SII was announced at IBC..
reading tea leaves we can probably expect the A7SIII at another video / media show.
(meant to reply to lw)
Today – they announced the A7SII.
So that’s your theory out of the water 🙂
But I was more looking forward to a new a6100/7000. So I guess need to wait…
IBIS and smaller? Those two combined sound really strange, I can understand the skepticism about the specs.
And why IBIS makes it bigger? Olympus has 3/5-axis IBIS in a smaller bodies and APS-C is a smaller sensor than 35mm. So totally possible.
if has IBIS it won’t be smaller and lighter
Let me be straight thinking now
1) A99 II. It looks like they never will release this. So that means A-Mount is dead.
2) Lenses. It looks like Sony now has letting other manufactors like Zeiss take over the lens production. Maybe a great idea. Sony could then only produce slow lenses for the E-Mount system. E-Mount lenses for the consumers, and Zeiss lenses for people that want more quality and fast lenses
It’s amazing but statistically SAR has less on-target results than a monkey hitting the random rumour button.
My thoughts, exactly (well, maybe not the inspired monkey/rumor button comparison, but that’s the magnitude of ineptness on display here).
agreed 100%
Um, APS-C is NOT smaller than Micro Four-Thirds. It is significantly larger.
MFT has a crop factor of 2, APS-C is only 1.5 – higher crop factor = smaller sensor. We know that the A7 units that received IBIS grew slightly in the process.
Also, there’s no difference between 3 and 5-axis IBIS other than electronics and control algorithms. In reality, the sensor only shifts in 3 axes in both cases. (Sony calls yaw and horizontal translation of the body different axes, even though the sensor moves in the same axis to correct for both of these.)
