(SR3) Next Sony announcement in early-mid June?

The (superexpensive) Leica X2 is the last of the APS-C model with fixed lens. Is Sony coming as next?

I am getting first reports about a possible new Sony product announcement in June! I have been told that “something is going on“. I hope trusted sources can read this post and send me some more info soon. As you know the NEX-F5, new NEX lenses and the APS-C compact camera with fixed lens are rumored to arrive sometimes this summer. The A99 is scheduled for a late August early September announcement but I hope Sony will show us the prototype earlier.

I am right now collecting rumors about the NEX-F5 which promises to be a pretty good camera. And I have been told the new NEX lens(es) will be “great”. I haven’t heard anything about the fixed lens [shoplink 11547 ebay]DSC-R1 alike (here on eBay)[/shoplink] camera. Let’s hope that’s coming too 🙂

Stay tuned on SAR! And if you know “something” feel free to contact me at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com or use the anonymous contact form you see on the right sidebar! Thanks!

Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=probably fake rumor
SR2=rumor from unknown sources
SR3=50% chance it is correct
SR4=rumor from known sources
SR5=almost certainly correct!

  1. I wonder how big the fixed-lens camera gonna be?
    I really hope it’ll be something portable, unlike R1. Cause if I’m suppose to buy R1-sized camera than equally well I can get A37.

    1. You can’t beat physics if it is an APS-C sized sensor, unless they do what the x100 and now x2 does and use a small prime equivalent. Any sort of a built in zoom will make it “big” in comparison.

      Though a NEX with a fixed Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 would be very interesting. Many people have that lens glued to their camera anyway.

      1. on the other hand though you got more place to play with in terms of microlenses and optics. Hence the G1X is tiny even though it uses bigger sensor than Nikon 1 system.
        I wouldn’t mind 25 or 35mm f/1.8 prime though 🙂 definitely would be a dslr-quality compact sparking some nice interest if designed well 🙂

          1. o_O
            I had it in my hands. It’s not a big camera. No idea what you are up to. It fits into my packet! Yea, it’s bigger than some of m4/3 bodies, but… still smaller than them with equivalent lens. 🙂

          2. Well, bigger than my G10 and bigger than a NEX or some of the M43 bodies as you pointed out. For me, the S100 is tiny 🙂

  2. This is old ground but there is no way Sony will launch a successor to the DSC-R1. That would challenge everything in their line-up right up to the A77. To remind you of some of the R1 features you will definitely not find on this upcoming camera:
    * 24-120mm equiv. lens T*, starting at F2.8
    * Silent shutter
    * dual control dials
    * waist level screen capability
    * EVF (though they may support the bargain priced NEX option EVF)
    On the other hand you will have to accept that focus will still be slow and handling will be much closer to ‘compact’ than SLR. But never mind because you will be able to take movies (often accidentally), take sweep panoramas and no doubt recognise members of your family and randomly focus on their faces.

    I would love to be proved wrong honestly I would but I don’t think Sony product planners will let this product do anything to challenge NEX let alone their SLR business.

  3. “Super expensive X2”

    Has a decent standard hotshoe. That is what one has to pay to get an useful tool nowadays! 🙁

    Why would Sony be hurt if they make a NEX-7 with the C3/5N’ s fabulous 16MP sensor?????

    1. I agree, I can not understand why no one makes a cheaper version of the Leica X2. It would be great to see gimics removed from cameras (scene modes, art filters etc) and proper controls such as aperuter and shutter speed dials being re-introduced.

        1. *embarrassment* I hadn’t realised the X100 had dropped so much in price, the last time I checked it was still close to a £1000. Even so, with a bog standard EVF instead of the hybrid and a plastic body instead of metal someone could probably make one cheaper.

          1. Then you’ll get a Sigma DP2 (without viewfinder, but still..). It’s 300€ in Germany, so a bargain compared to the X100. But lacking the retro manual control dials 🙁

  4. just add one more dial and build in flash.. and upgrade the touch screen response..somethin like touch screen release shutter like olympus and panasonic would be great..

  5. Sony, just give me a 30mm f1.8 pancake, thats all you need to get everyone onto nex system…this is not difficult to realise and achieve right???

  6. It would be nice if someone came out with a large sensor, fixed prime lens, pocketable camera. I doubt Sony will be the one, though, given their fondness for large lenses.

  7. My wishlist for the Nex 5F:
    -Included EVF.
    -Hotshoe.
    -Mic input.
    -No overheating in video.
    -Clean Liveview HDMI output.
    -Included Flash.
    -TriNavi control.
    -Same or better clean high ISO.
    -Stay at 16.1 MegaPixels
    -Plain bottom base for better contact with tripod plates.
    -Of course all this come with a little bigger body.

    My two cents.

    1. ALMOST PERFECT:

      WITH:

      –ZEISS 16-80
      –EVF MUST BE OLED
      –NEX-CELLENT LOOKING

      I say stay out of competition w/ X2 and X100 (and whatever its successor will be), and compete with the Canon G1X.

      If the lens is even close to the Zeiss 24 f1.8, this camera will be a serious single camera for those who prefer to work small and light and a serious second camera for those with bigger rigs as their primary.

      Like Vivek, I’ll take 2…, and sell my NEX-7 and Z24…,

    2. -0.75

      I don’t want the NEX-F5 bigger than the 5/5N and I don’t need an built-in flash or an EVF. TriNavi control would be fine, but not if it makes the camera much bigger – that’s why there is a NEX-7.

      But I totally agree on 16.1 Megapixels, the better tripod mount and I would love to have a Mic input too.

      My additional wishes would be Flash Sync, GPS and external USB controls like this one here: http://www.vimeo.com/19341897

    3. So basically an improved NEX-7 for $700? Because that’s how much the F5 is going to cost.

  8. Ok so the future looks bright, I get it now. What I would like to know is, when can we expect the 24 mm 1.8 zeiss in stores again? Is there any kind of update on the situation?

  10. If the aps-c can have a decent and some sort of collapsible lens, I’ll be very interested. I don’t mind if the lens is large-iShoot when powered up, but when powered down, I’d like a camera that can squeeze into a jacket pocket. Right now, even the 18-55 nex kit lens is still a bit on the large side to achieve that….

    Here’s hoping!

    1. Your best existing example is Samsung’s 20-50 ƒ/3.5-5.6 for their NX mount.

      It has some serious distortion at the wide end but has decent resolution throughout the range.

      That said, I seriously doubt Sony is going to release a collapsible lens any time soon. They are notoriously disappointing (the only reason people don’t cry over the collapsible lenses on Micro Four Thirds is because they are drunk on in-camera corrections).

      1. i do remember some time ago here on SAR, somebody found the patent of a collapsible lens. Maybe is a new E-mount lens or maybe is the fixed lens that will be present in the new cybershot. (I don’t think they’re going to promote it as a NEX as it doesn’t share the E-mount.)

  12. Well, after one of the zooms announced on the NEX Roadmap turned out to be a black variation of the SEL-18200, so one of the other zooms could be a variation of the SEL-1855, which would let remain a wide angle zoom – something like an 10-16mm – plus a large aperture standard prime, which should be 35mm f/2 or better. That’ll be it about NEX lenses for 2012 if there won’t be the G high performance standard zoom for Christmas… – and what about the NEX-F5 with GPS?

  13. I honestly don’t get the atraction to the fixed lens when the Nex style is available. I could some wanting it, by why market against the nex?

    I also have no doubt the new Sony lenses will be great. Sony lenses take for ever to come out, but they are almost always great value for dollar wise!

    Hopefully the Nex-7F or N will be that beefed up stripped diwn version us Pros are still lokking for!! The nex-7 came really close, but has a lot if room for possible improvement. It may jack the cost up to much though?

    .02cents

    1. Because people want a compact system capable with very high IQ. At the moment the Nex system is nowhere near compact: cameras are small, lenses are big, and not good enough for the Nex7. Hope is that a fixed zoom can collapse into the camera when the camera is off, making the set fully portable.

  14. “The (superexpensive) Leica X2 is the last of the APS-C model with fixed lens. Is Sony coming as next?”

    Not the last, but the latest. Like this:
    “The (super-expensive) Leica X2 is the latest APS-C model with a fixed lens. Will Sony be next?”

    Writing proper English is harder than you think, isn’t it?

    1. Figuring out that non-native speakers not always write perfect English is very hard for some people, too, isn’t it?

      1. Of course – and it wasn’t really meant all that cynically. This site is obviously run by someone with a German background. So far so good. If it was just a hobby I would say “no problem”. But the site is gradually moving into “for profit” territory, consequently you’d expect a little better texting. Start by using a spellchecker. Next, find a Brit or American with similar interests who quickly checks the postings against a reasonable fee. It’s all in the best interests of the readers and the site and its owner. No offence.

        1. Are you here to enjoy or play professor? How many languages do you speak? Sorry, no offense meant…

  15. I hope no prototype A99. Sony is should just announce it already. Showing a prototype now would be pointless, esp when there is 5 other new FF out there.

  16. Dont want ANOTHER Nex5
    Don’t want ANOTHER body with fixed lens
    Don’t want a black rebranded version of an existing lens.

    WE WANT NEW GOOD LENSES!!!
    Start with a 16-50/4 G !!!

  17. Hopes:

    APSC zoom lens:
    Size of Nex3C
    Lens: 24-50 / 2.8 retractable (motoriszed)

    Nex lens:
    16-5o / f4

  18. Looking at the NEX lens roadmap it seems that a couple of things are now obviously a disappointment.

    First, “high magnification zoom” obviously referred to Sony’s branding of the Tamron 18-200.

    Second, I am willing to bet that “Standard Zoom” refers to the black 18-55 for the NEX-7.

    But on the upside, a large aperture normal prime and a wide angle zoom seem slated to appear any time now. I am indifferent about a normal prime, but I desperately want a good ultra wide lens for NEX. Or really any APS-C camera. The Tokina 11-16 is great on 16mp sensors. However, on the NEX-7, the sensor resolves CA throughout the whole frame now. Tokina’s outdated optical designs are no good for high resolution sensors.

    Sony’s 24mm and 50mm lenses are both fantastic for different reasons. So I remain hopeful that Sony will put together a good wide angle zoom and not just shrink their disappointing 11-18mm lens.

    I just hope the wide-angle zoom is the next lens announced/released.

  19. Are you paid to promote sony products ?????

    The NEX-F5 which promises to be a pretty good camera.
    I have been told the new NEX lens(es) will be “great”

  20. The collapsible lens patent could be for this APS-C Compact Zoom, which means the size of this camera will be small.

    Hope the ‘great lens’ is the high-end G standard zoom.

  21. In my dreams the F5 could be a 5n with fixed evf and some added dial, or button. May be a shrunk Nex 7 body, with the sensor of the 5n and some improvement in ooc jpeg (but this is a real dream 🙂 ).
    Coupled with the 50 mm OSS, a new 35 mm f/1.8 OSS in the same price range, and with the same good behaviour of the 50 mm OSS, and the 16 mm I own (it’s not the best lens I used 🙂 , but that’s what Sony offers), it would be my perfect light camera.

  22. ” (…) And I have been told the new NEX lens(es) will be “great”. (…)”

    To me a HIGH QUALITY telescope-alike lens (e.g. Panasonic Lumix G x Vario PZ 14-42/3,5-5,6 OIS) would be a great asset to the NEX system. I’d appreciate the option to have a really compact NEX setup if I want to.

    cheers,

    theDude

    1. it will be promoted as a cybershot camera, not NEX. Unless they want to make thing even more confusing by releasing it as a NEX.

  23. Rumors say Canon will enter the mirrorless market this summer.
    So maybe Sony try to get most of the attention this summer?

  24. Seriously I dont see a reason to introduce 5N successor, unless they bring evf and more buttons/dials. But then it becomes the 7.

    Keep the 5n Sony! Even the 5 was a good camera, 5n is better.

    Bring the new lenses. Reduce price of external evf, la-ea2. Make it a solid platform.

    1. Though if they kept it about the same size and squeezed in an EVF, that would be quite something.

  25. Does anyone think that SONY might do something really novel and offer a vertical grip for the a65 and a57 cameras that amongst other things, would feature a PC socket for studio flash? Jeeez, the VG with a PC connector works so well on my Maxxum 800si film SLR! Nah, not a chance eh! That would probably cut into the a77 sales in a big way. But it certainly would make them more competetive against the stuff from Canikon…aahhh, I’m just daydreaming again…Sorry to get carried away.

  26. Great news for soccer moms!

    More slow plastic lenses and kiddie cams.

    Sony, please just quit!

    You lost the few pros you had.

    1. Sorry Flush… not all is lost. Sony my Sweet as the Phoenix Rising. I smell something good cooking in the kitchen. No revolution begins smoothly my friend. Through suffering great strength manifests.

    2. Oh dear, the professional wanker is back with a new name! Just go away and play somewhere else.

  27. @admin: Good morning. Any rumors about the FW update for NEX7 & A850/A900 ? Are there rumors about a new firmware upgrade for improvments and bugfixes?

    Please keep us updated. Any signs that Sony might responde?

  28. What you recommend. I can buy à 5n with à €175 discount (575€) with 2 kit lenses. Or should i wait for the 5f?

  29. I’m in the UK and am a member of “Which”, the consumer affairs watchdog club. One of the things they often get asked about cameras in general is ‘where is the viewfinder?’

    With their growing knowledge of EVF technology, Sony really should be able to take a good chunk of the high end compact segment. I looked through the g1x ‘viewfinder’ at the weekend and it isn’t great…. With these sort of cameras, OVFs just don’t work at all but a decent EVF might be a deal-maker for quite a few people.

    A nex 5 upgrade with even a basic EVF (eg like the a57) would be 10x more tempting than the current nex 3/5 series without EVF. I know you can clip an EVF accessory on but it looks so fragile and increases te size of the camera even more.
