VeryBigLobo got unofficially some “whispered” price info of the new FE lenses:
– 28mm f/2.0 G should cost 499 Euro (February shipment)
– 35mm f/1.4 Zeiss should cost 1399 Euro (March shipment)
– 90mm f/2.8 G macro should cost 999 Euro (March shipment)
– 24-240mm f/3.5-6.4 should cost 1099 Euro (March shipment)
– both converters should cost 229 Euro each (March shipment)
Take it with a grain of salt. To me this looks like a very good pricing!

So disappointed it isn’t a 8-1200mm f/1.4. Why doesn’t Sony make a really razor sharp walk-around lens to meet all my photo needs? I think it’s a conspiracy to get me to buy a lot of lenses.
Well duh.. thats consumerism for you.. never sell something without thinking about maximising profits
35mm f1.4 Zeiss 1399 Euro? Change the 1 to 2.
lol
I bet Zeiss will want to.
I could believe change the 3 to 8.
@SAR_Admin:disqus Any chance that we hear something about A-Mount this week?
The A-mount is dead, haven’t you heard.
🙂
After A-Mount it’s time for FE-Mount because they won’t be profitable any more and will focus on cancorders, well A7s is actually a camcorder We are going in the right direction ;). Stills are boring anyway! They don’t move.
Everything is dead, were all dead………………
Trying my best!!!
Appreciate the effort, Andrea, but I hear the Sony brass is doing the same deer in the headlights dodging of direct a-mount questions at Photokina they did at CES. It’s pretty clear the a-mount product line is one they don’t want to discuss or particularly care about. I just don’t think they have the guts to pull the plug on it entirely quite yet. Like with the a77II, some Sony suit may eventually green light the a99II release to manufacturing which keeps getting slipped to the back burner but the a-mount is so stagnate there’s no confidence in investing in the product line any more. Failure is imminent because it’s becoming an inevitable self-fulfilling prophesy.
There could be a strategy Sony is playing out here, let all the others play their hand then come out with something more advanced and better. Of course a month after that the insecure forum members will declare the a mount dead again. But who cares, I just want to see what they can do with the A99II, might even buy one.
I might even buy an a77II or updated a-mount FF down the road but it’d have to be heavily discounted at this point or more likely used/refurbished. While an a99 upgraded body might beg better glass than what I’m holding onto can’t imagine buying any more new Sony glass.
Ever see the movie “The Green Mile?” A-mount is a dead man walking until Sony does something substantial to prove me wrong.
(FT5)(SR5)
– 28mm f/2.0 G should cost 499 Euro 499usd (March shipment)
– 35mm f/1.4 Zeiss should cost 1899 Euro 1899usd (May shipment)
– 90mm f/2.8 G macro should cost 999 Euro 899usd (June shipment)
– 24-240mm f/3.5-6.4 should cost 1099 Euro 999usd (June shipment)
– both converters should cost 229 Euro each 199usd(April shipment)
Sounds about right, comparable to the competition.
You must have reversed $ and € !! 1 € if far more than 1 $ …even if you add taxes you should end with the same price in euro and dollars
No, this is reality. Prices in Europe and the US rarely ever match after using a 1.29 conversion rate.
Besides, there is 19-21% sales tax on these consumer goods here in most countries (included in sales price) and having 2 years warranty standard, obviously will cost manufacturers extra too, which undoubtly has an effect on certain sales prices.
i’ll just get the new iPhone 🙂
Ouch, that could get expensive… I’m definitely down for the macro. Price of the 28mm looks realistic compared to the 35/2.8 .
Zm Distagon 35/1.4, here I come! 🙂
Canon’s 100 macro L sells for USD $949. Sony wants equivalent USD $1249? Nikon’s 35 is 1300 euro compared to Sony’s euro 1899. Should be interesting to see how this roll out plays. I would imagine a large number of wedding photographers will be holding onto their Nikons and Canons for a while.
Pricing is usually 1:1 – 1000€ and $1000.
$ to euros @ 1.29 this a.m. But if u have a broker who is willing to sell short buy them.
You must be new to photo gear prices. Ever heard of taxes?
Have you ever bothered to check the Japanese prices of these very same lenses? Sony sell them there for a profit. The EU prices are atrocious and have little to do with taxes.
We’re not debating if the prices are justified, I’m just trying show how to predicts prices in $ if you know the price in €.
Zeiss 35mm F1.4 for Canon EF mount is $1,843
Why would sony sell the auto focus one cheaper?
Price will gonna be at least $1999
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/733913-REG/Zeiss_1871764_35mm_F_1_4_Distagon_T.html
Because that’s a real zeiss, and this is just a sony branded zeiss?
The 100mm L is about €999 rrp, so that sounds about right. I just wish they wouldn’t go 1:1 on the UK price too…
Since the beginning of mirrorless, almost every lenses are more expansive than their DSLR equivalent. It’s nothing new. I don’t know why but it’s the way it is, maybe lower sales volume, more R&D, or basically it’s just the price people are ready to pay for a more compact system…
Nuts. While the camera industry is collapsing, in part because of such unaffordable prices by everyday hobbyists (i.e., 95% of the market), manufacturers try to protect their income by raising prices even more.
Not only is this model unsustainable, it only hastens the inevitable demise.
No one you ever show a picture to will be able to tell or even care what lens was used, as long as it was good enough. And indeed they are all good enough today.
The pricing, IMHO, is not as important as the optical (and mechanical) quality of the new lenses.
Imo, makes no sense to buy at these prices. The lenses are big anyway, defeating the purpose of mirrorless portability, might as well get a DSLR with much cheaper lenses and many more options. And for when portability is key, an APS-C or 4/3 mirrorless or the RX100; or even the new Panasonic cameraphone (Lumix CM1). Absolutely want a full frame for street photography, then get the RX1.
But really, to get a full frame mirrorless with a basic set of lenses you’ll need to sell your car, which you’d then need to carry the lenses around…
man you get it. its all about options – big, small, expensive, affordable, high quality, average quality. just choose the camera that suits your needs but dont expect to get the best for the smallest price. good cameras and lenses have never been cheap.
Compactness is not the sole purpose of mirrorless. As the name suggests, it’s about removing the mirror, and by doing that, the size is reduced as a bonus
I don’t care about compactness. I want mirrorless bodies and big stellar lens. F**k me, right?
The purpose of mirrorless is not portability, but flexibility.
Exactly; you can go with a small kit with compact lens and body when traveling light or compact body and big lenses when the need arises. Most people don’t get it.
I think the problem is that mirrorless cameras have always been smaller than DSLRs, so people assume they will stay that way forever.
Considering these lens announcements, I would be astounded if Sony do not release a line of DSLR-sized e-mount cameras, especially if A-mount really is on the way out.
Quite possible, Sony is definitely beefing up the line on FE lenses and there are more in the pipeline.
I imagine the dslr style bodies would include an integrated grip, like the 1d. It’ll justify the extra size and give it to a bit more bulk with larger lenses…
Well I would imagine everything from the size of an A3000 to a 1D is possible.
Fair point, although the a3000 sales seem to have been pretty dismal… I can see a need/market for dslr style bodies for people buying big lenses, but aren’t they going to want an enthusiast/pro spec body with appropriate balance and ergonomics?
No doubt, but others will be absolutely fine with smaller and less featured bodies in the mould of A57s/Rebels/D3xxx. From the looks of it there’s going to be a huge range of sizes when it comes to lenses, so people of all levels will want to choose a body size and spec they are comfortable with.
The A3000 probably didn’t sell because it wasn’t very attractive in terms of features. It was dirt cheap, but the EVF and screen compromised the camera badly.
The a3000 was a horrible camera. I played around with one at a store, and I just couldn’t believe how abysmal it was. The actual images were good, as it has a quality sensor in it, but the ergonomics sucked (bad buttons layout, bad menu system, etc.), and the EVF was absolutely awful. Bottom line: even though the resulting images were OK, it was not a pleasant camera to use.
I always think back to the a200 when I look at entry level Sony camera. Sure, it was basic, but the layout was great, the OVF was much better than the competition and it had IBIS. On the other hand, the A300 felt like it had been made out of spare parts and designed by the intern.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t really solve the problem for me.
Sorry about that.
For me, the main problem is that people are used since decades to see big cameras with (comparatively) small lenses. So some people think that it’s the way it has to be, and everything else is idiot or disproportionate. The only important thing is : can I handle my camera + lens well? If the response is yep, IMHO the rest is useless…
Exactly this. One day we will see camera designs that look like telescopes and I see no reason why not. Much easier to fit in a pocket.
🙂 My point was not to put a 800mm f/5.6 on an A6000. Because it won’t be usable. I was mostly talking about “massive” primes. Anyway, you can’t put a DSLR with big zoom in you pocket as well. My point was just : if it’s usable, if it fits well in the hand, maybe we should forget the couple “big dslr + small prime” as the only solution available…
Or you can have one camera with high quality lenses and also put a lens like the 35mm f2.8 on for street.
There’s compact lenses and big lenses, depends on what you want to do. The flexibility is a big plus, and the full frame sensor.
If true, the 35mm would be at an amazing price compared to the Loxia 35mm. Consider that this newly announced lens also carries the Zeiss label, is a whole stop faster, AND has auto focus, yet it is only $100 more! This doesn’t make sense on a relative basis. Sure the AF 35mm is larger and heavier, but you are getting way more for the price than what the Loxia offers.
Expect both Loxias to fall in price within a year of release. This same kind of dissonance occurred earlier with the Touit lenses, and they saw steep discounts to the tune of two for the price of one earlier this year.
depends on your priorities. some folks dont need af and prefer a much smaller lens.
The same price differential exists between the Loxia 50/2 and the Sony 55/1.8.
>28mm f/2.0 G should cost 499 Euro (February shipment)
Which means 499USD for the 28/2? Done. I’ll take 10.
1099 Euro for a non-G/Zeiss consumer superzoom though… What is Sony thinking?
AFAIK, the 24-240 will be the first FF superzoom starting at 24mm? At least I was surprised about the wide angle.
Tokina has an old 24-200mm FF lens.
True, overlooked that one!
Where do we see that the 28/2 is a G lens?
Let me rephrase that. I see it listed above but not in the Sony presentation nor in the photos of the lens.
Just want to be clear that it will be branded G.
Zeiss 35mm F1.4 for Canon EF mount is $1,843
Sony will definitely not gonna sell it cheaper.
Price will gonna be at least $1999
I know it’s a DSLR lens, but the problem for Sony is that Sigma is selling its 35/1.4 for $899.00.
Sigma have changed the game with their Art lenses – top image quality for far less.
Exactly this. There’s also the Voigtländer 35/1.2 for around $1200. The ‘whispered’ price seems like a sweet spot.
Direct currency conversions never make sense. If it’s 1399 Euro, then it’ll probably be $1500-1700.
Well it’s Zeiss and not Sony, different companies. Sony will try everything to make the FE lenses cheaper than their competitors. And if someone really looks up the prizes for Canon and Nikon Pro lenses he will be astounded that they are all more expensive than the Sony Zeiss ones
I think this is the reason why there is no A-mount news: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/18/business/international/sony-widens-expected-loss-to-2-14-billion.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&_r=0
I saw that – they’re mostly blaming phone sales, but it could have a knock on if they think they’re chasing a market that doesn’t exist.
Hope Sony will survive, if not it will spell doom for both A & E mount users.
In case Sony goes down, the profitable divisions will be sold off. If the imaging division is making money for the shareholders, they will ensure it will live on.
We’ll see if Canikon’s financial woes reverse from all the angry and frustrated a-mount owners rushing the exit. I know I’ve made Nikon very happy of late. ;^)
Whow, prices for 28mm ƒ/2.0 and converters to 21mm UWA and 16mm FishEye do sound nice to me. In case the quality is decent enough wide open for Street Photography at night and at least stopped down to ƒ/5.6 or ƒ/8.0 great for Landscape that’s close to everything I need with AF beside my manual FullFrame Lenses, YEAH!
Yes, I think especially the 28 f2 with 21mm WA converter can be a very good deal if the quality is there.
Guys, the Mitakon 50/0.95 is $799 when you order from China and this lens is *A*MA*ZING*. My copy arrived 2 days ago and I have a hard time believing how sharp it is wide open. Such a nice addition to the FE lens line-up.
The rumored pricing for that 35/1.4 has me hesitating on pulling the trigger on a Voigtländer 35/1.2. March is a long wait, and that lens is insanely big. Hmmmm.
Really hope the 28mm will be having good quality, even with 2 converter, then it will be going to my buying list. It list G on top and few post ago list zeiss=.=?i think it is just normal lens?Macro hope it is same or even better quality than A-mount 100mm..35mm depend on quality, like the aperture ring which is good for video use.
That’s admin’s trick, similar to ” 24-700mm lens “…
24-700? sign me up
Sony just posted a 2 billion dollar loss. 4 times what they had forecasted. Now, they’ve made it clear they will focus on their imaging and gaming division, but I think we know that focus entails sensors and FE cameras. There is no way Sony has the money to release new A-mount lenses- no way. I don’t think we have to even speculate as to why we are still waiting. I still expect a warmed over A99II but not much else. It’s not like they can pull money out of thin air now.
by reducing their loyal customer base, (which for sure will affect other product choices branded Sony), Will that strategy improve their financial stability ?
You do realise the mirror box is doomed, don’t you?
Only for Sony maybe.
Oh please. You think when on chip AF matches DSLR performance Nikon and Canon are still going to use mirrors and pentaprisms? That they will continue to build complex mechanical solutions, when the image can just be read off the sensor? You know the SLR was invented to solve a problem that no longer exists in the digital age, right?
And soon the rest of their finances if they keep loosing their customers.
LOL, the rate of loosing A-mount customers is insignificant compared to the rate of they are getting new shooters from all other brands if they focus on making more lenses for the E-mount and building sensible E-mount bodies. Olympus did the right thing dropping their ancient 4/3 to focus on m4/3. That was how they are still around. It’s exactly the same thing when Canon dropped that dead weight FD mount system.
1400EUR for the 35mm 1.4 is a very good price.
In line with Nikon and Canon’s offerings for SLR but I expect a better performance than either.
A lot of people may not get it, but if the price of the lens is really good, the price is amazing.
It isnt like the profit margin at this level is better than the profit margin at the “normal” Sony lens level anyways.
Are you for real??
$1400 euro is $2000 USD!!
How’s that in line when I can get a sigma 35 art for 1/3 of the price??
I doubt if the Zeiss can even beat the sigma….
you need another 500€ to make the sigma art AF on the A7 cameras. And then it will be twice as heavy as the Zeiss 34 1.4.
The Sigma is good fast lens, sharp of course like all lenses in 2014. Nothing to race about though, the results in terms of bokeh quality let me off
If this 24-240 has the same excellent quality of the APS-C SEL 18-200 it will become a big seller IMO.
Wow, these all seem pretty pricey! Why are sony lenses always so much more than lenses from the other big camera companies (canon, nikon, panasonic, olympus, etc). Isn’t this just gouging? Are they that much better than lenses from other companies?
Economy of scale. Larger companies (like Canon/Nikon) can sell more units which offsets the ability to offer a lower price per unit.
But what happens to the concept of competitive pricing?
We are not talking about Sony PlayStation 4 here; Sony can’t sell lens and camera in razor-razorblade business model.
“So much more”? Are they now?
Let’s see… (Nikon store, Germany prices since that’s where Photokina is and therefore most likely match)
Nikon 35/1.4 = €1879. Oops.
Nikon 105mm Macro = €969. Tie.
Nikon 28-300mm = €999. Okay, Sony is bit more expensive here but it’s not a big difference.
Yep. Nikon FX 28-300mm = $1049US. Sony FE 24-240, which I will bet is smaller and lighter, is priced comparably.
The only one that looks in line is the 28/2. $1100 for a superzoom lens?
I know, cheap right? Considering that the APS-C super zoom is around that price! 😉
“28mm f/2.0 G should cost 499 Euro” not expensive enough my son.
ahah well said. If it’s the true price and it’s reasonably sharp wide open, well…i’m in!
Admin, why are you stating that the 28/2 is G? Is that confirmed? I see no marking on the lens that would indicate so.
Right? Earlier they claimed it was zeiss. From the markings and early reports it looks to be to neither.
Interesting. Photokina announced lenses mostly not expected available until March. Makes me think my expectations the rumored January announcements will be shipping by May 2015 look optimistic. If Sony opens their January body announcements with purely e-mount ones per their recent behavior we might not see an a99II made with leftover Nikon D750 or D810 parts until summer or even fall of 2015!
maybe, maybe not. we will see. just let it happen.
I still expect Sony to be professional and tell what they are planning.
Waiting until January to be told by the facts that A-Mount is legacy is not correct.
> then the conclusion would be …
That’s not professional and therefore their products are not pro style either
By the way
a japanese philosophy says If you don’t care how your product is wrapped why should you care how your product is made.
Therefore weakness in PR and customer support reflects the weakness in quality of the products
FALLACY ALERT!
well I like to invest in professionals. To be pro means the whole package (Products, Customer Service-support, PR etc.). Photography involves a big pack of money it’s not a deal for one day.
– 90mm f/2.8 G macro should cost 999 Euro WTF ? At that price is better to take sigma 105 2.8
