This obviously has to be a mistake! Anyway, if you buy the camera you may get the cam for the currently displayed price?

The money that you saw taken out is a temporary authorization hold until they ship the camera. For example, if they don’t ship the camera…the authorization hold will automatically disappear after a few days.

Orders are charged when shipped, but there is no indication of when the cameras come off of backorder. So, make sure to overnight the camera in order to get it the day after it never ships.

They *might* actually honor these purchases if it’s a smaller hassle than cancelling them. It’s not a huge financial loss if it’s just a limited number of purchasers before they correct it.

In the EU, these orders will be cancelled due to price mistake. It’s legal. Even consumer-friendly Amazon cancels them. I guess the same applies to the US.

The highest chance to actually receive the item is if you ordered before it went out of stock and chose the fastest shipping possible. It may leave the warehouse even before they notice the error and cancel the orders.

The only chance for buyers to receive these $299 A7Rs is if Sony really meant that price.
Which doesn’t seem realistic and its 99% likely that Sony will just cancel these orders and their terms and conditions allow that. They are covered.
There was a similar precedent with Amazon a couple of years ago when they canceled a ton of orders.

I don’t think your card was charged fully, probably amount was put on temp – meaning it will be cancelled as soon as Sony fixes this. Probably in couple of hours everyone will receive a email cancellation letter. So no refund.

This happened with playstation network awhile back. Turned out it was a disgruntled employee who lowered the prices. I believe it ended up in a lawsuit. It’ll get canceled I’m sure of it. Maybe a few slipped through at the beginning though.

My order hasnt been cancelled and is sitting as backordered status on their site so maybe there is hope? only way to find out is wait a week D:

In many online POS systems, you can easily mistake the “discount” and “sale price” boxes. That’s what I assume happened –no hacking or anything crazy. Also ordering directly from Sony store is stupid –of course they won’t get you those prices! However Best Buy in my town offers the sale price -10%. I walked around and talked to any new employee I could find until I found one stupid enough to go through with it. I got 2 A7Rs for $360 +taxes.
We know some orders have been cancelled already. So, to me, that means they will all be cancelled. Sony would not pick and choose which orders to honor and which to cancel. If they made the decision to cancel ANY of them – they will cancel all of them. So, if you ordered and have not yet gotten your cancellation notice – get ready – it is coming.

No cancellation yet for me. It started off as “processing” and then changed to “backordered a few hours later”. The pending charge showed up on my CC right away though. I might be slightly different as I’m in the UK and paid with a UK card (just lucky enough to have a US shipping address I can enter!), so we’ll see. I’m sure it’ll get cancelled later today.

Look, there are price errors that are actually honored and those that get cancelled. Granted, in this case it was a very likely cancel. Besides, you are not tying up funds depending on how you pay.
By the way, the 500mm is built to order and probably includes lots of manual steps during manufacture. Even if they wanted, they probably couldn’t produce that many lenses. It’s currently #1 sold lens.
They will call the people who manufacture the 500mm F4 lens and have them come to the factory right away to start producing one more lens, just for you. On Sunday. So that they can then sell it to you at a huge loss.

At this point in the production run, Sony has paid for the cost of production on the camera, and each additional unit is pure profit. No one should feel guilty in the unlikely case Sony fulfills the order. At least with the A7R. I’m not as certain about the other cameras and the 500mm lens…

I was an early orderer of the a7r yesterday (morning EST). I got an email order confirmation from Sony with an Order Id, and no cancelation as of yet. But I noticed that when I signed up at Sony using the email I used to order the camera, my order information wasn’t populated in the “orders” section of my account. Thoughts?

Sony is not the only company to have a mistake crop up in their website. They won’t be the only company to cancel orders that take advantage of an error. Things happen.
This was obviously not a mistake. It was done purposely. That’s why more than one site was involved. You can figure that right? Why would they change the price to such a low price, when they weren’t even changing the price to any price on the sites? Sounds like free advertising for Sony and maybe they make money off of the interest in the account before they refund the money on the order that actually got charged. Also, If it was an accident, Why would some of the cameras be completely missing from the site with the correct price?

I ordered 1 a7r from Sony. It will be cancelled, but they will end up losing money because I would have probably bought $4000 of lenses and accessories to go with it. At the $2000 price it is not worth it for me to switch because I can’t get anywhere near as much back for my Nikkor lenses as it would cost for the equivalent Sony ones (where they exist). It would probably cost me $3000 to switch from my D800 at their current lens and accessory prices. A $200 a7r would make that $1200, which is closer to reasonable.
Oh well. If the A7rii is a game-changer it might change the equation.
Obviously Sony has done the math on this. If they thought they could make money giving away A7r bodies they would have been doing it all along.

I am not saying that they could make the money from everybody, just that they would make money from me. It is going to be an old model in a month and they could use it as an opportunity to get some good photographers to switch to their system. I don’t know how they would determine if you were a photographer or not (ask for website address, flickr stream maybe), but they would make a ton of money on lenses.
Maybe it would make sense for a camera maker to sell the bodies near cost price and make the money on accessories. A lot of other industries do it (Brother printers, some Amazon kindle products, for example). Sony would probably never do it because of their brand positioning, but this price mistake could be a good way to snare a couple of hundred photographers and a little bit of good PR.
If you go over to slickdeals you will see why they are canceling all of the orders. There are hundreds of people who ordered 10 just to sell, while other people are asking if an a7r would be a good first camera (and if it comes with a lens).
Well no one mentioned that Sony might be holding our money and using it to make more money as (stocks) or whatever then if they lose they still win.
Sony does not charge the purchaser’s credit card until the camera is almost ready to ship. They will not make a penny off this screw-up.

I know that if I go to a grocery store here in Michigan, and they mismark an item, and I accidentally pay too much, I get refunded the difference TIMES FIVE! And if they accidentally mark it down lower than the actual price, then they have to honor that price. Mistake or not, Sony made the “sale price” of many of their items really low, and as silly as it sounds, they should honor it. How is the consumer supposed to know whether or not that’s too low of a price. For all we know, Sony makes $1,500 profit on an a7r. I bet at this stage of the a7r, that’s not too far off.
Sony covers all of this in there purchase agreement. They are not liable for online pricing mistakes. Now, whether or not they go ahead and ship the bodies at this price – we will see. But if they do – it of there own good will – not because they have to. You have no legal case against them.
By the way you will find that you cannot put such a disclaimer and expect it to cover all regions. For example, UK and Canadian law is more protective of consumer rights online in such instances.
And the amount of time the offer was up for, along with the amount of places the offer was seen hardly can constitute a mistake. How much of a mistake can they get away with making without ANY compensation to consumers who entered a boba fide contract for sale?

Paypal will not charge you till item is shipped, actually you could set it up to charge you after you received it.

Forgive my skepticism – because Sony themselves said they cancelled these orders. I hope it is true too – I am one of the “backordered” people too.
Sony is a big company, it is difficult to have everyone walking at the same pace. I think some early birds just got lucky since Sony might not have realized the problem at that time. However, this is a huge event for Sony, I think they still hasn’t agreed on how to solve this.

I have been led to believe I have a valid claim against Sony as they have still not sent me formal communication of why my order was cancelled, simply a fabricated email that I myself cancelled the order. They state that no orders were shipped, that I should receive another email but still haven’t. I am essentially being punished for doing the right thing and calling them to check about my order. They made a mistake and should be big enough to admit it, apologize for my inconvenience but instead they lied twice over and insulted me by hanging up when I demanded answers to my questions. I’m thinking of starting a class action against them so any proof of shipping and times the orders were placed would be appreciated

The cancellations seem to follow this pattern: If you ordered after a certain time, or you ordered multiple cameras – your order has probably been cancelled.
Many people are also going with some paypal theory – but – I didn’t use paypal and my order has not yet been cancelled.
My earlier order still has’nt been canceled. But still no update as to shipping details. I used visa , which got charged right away.

I find it really odd that people later in the day got cancellations the same day, but the earlier orders they just left open. Its not hard for them to see who ordered what, and cancel the orders. Pretty strange. If I get them, sweet. If not it was worth a shot!

I paid via PayPal while logged in my Sony account…. my order still stands. So, that theory is shot.
I do find it odd that WOOT.COM has Sony stuff on sale, including the a3000 (which Sony’s site shows as OUT OF STOCK…).
Something’s happening.
Some people that haven’t had their orders cancelled claim that their cc have been charged but that data is incorrect. If you look at your cc webpage it should say “Charges pending” According to Sony they don’t charge your cc till they are ready to ship your order. This is taken from the Sony.com customer service section:
“Q. When does my credit card get charged?
A. To ensure you’re totally satisfied with your purchase, Sony will
not charge your credit card until your purchase is ready to be shipped.
At the time you place your order, we’ll pre-authorize your card for the
total amount plus all applicable taxes and shipping charges. “
It could take Sony weeks to cancel and order. After all they don’t have the A7r and they can cancel the order once the camera arrives and prior to shipment. What does “backorder” means?
“What does backorder mean and when will my backordered items become available?
Although we make every attempt to have items available in stock, occasionally we may
list inventory as backordered, indicating that the item is temporarily out of stock. These items are not available to ship immediately because we are in the process of securing additional inventory from our suppliers. When possible, we will post expected ship dates in the item
description.
When no ship date is indicated during checkout, backordered items are typically returned to stock within 2-3 weeks. In some cases, there are production delays or inventory shortages which may delay the arrival of your item to our fulfillment centers.”
Some trolls are claiming that their orders were shipped. Don’t buy it for a second. They are just trying to stir the pot. Obviously they provide zero proof.
if you look at the slickdeals thread at least one person showed proof of getting the A7. he selected rush one day delivery.
This morning, my order number is no longer searchable on the Sony store. The page just says an order couldn’t be found with those details. I’ve not received a cancellation email though, and I thought other people posted screenshots of the order page with “cancelled” as the status… It also takes quite a few seconds to decide that the order doesn’t exist, which seems a bit iffy.
Just received cancellation email – the funny thing is the reason:
We have canceled your order/item(s) due to item unavailability.On occasion, popular items sell out before we can fulfill all orders. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience.
I too got a similar mail. Instead of admitting its mistake and apologizing for the same, Sony is giving lame excuse of item not being available! Well a7r was listed as back ordered. Disgusting response by Sony. Shame.
Yep, just got the same email. I figured we would never see the cameras. I just like how they lied about unavailability. I am sure the A7R will be back up for sale in the next week.
Ah, but if everything is to be believed on that thread, then later you will notice that he claims Sony recalled the package from the carrier before it got delivered, so no deal.

It might be the truth, they might be filling the orders with the stock that they have. They’re not going to make more cameras to give out for $200 . So I believe some people will get their orders… but we will never know the real truth.

Well shitake.. my US/PayPal order was also canceled. Oh well!
Shipped is one thing (if it actually was shipped), but others are saying that the shipment was recalled by Sony, so actually getting it is a whole different story. What was the tracking number?
Here is the FedEx shipment info for the a77ii order. I have a feeling it will be recalled as well. Will see.

Never mind, Sony requested FedEx to return the package. I think everyone’s order are to be cancelled.
I don’t know if I double hit. Sony has requested Fedex to ship the package back to them. There is no hope I guess. If they deliver, someone’s bonus for the year will be gone.
Maybe Sony was HACKED? Again? ….or just sloppy webpage management 🙂
