      1. Oh, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. I just noticed the document for the firmware update specified there was “stabilization improvement”. But I read it again and I realized it just meant 1.10 updates were bundled into it:

“Benefits provided by previous updates and included in version 1.20:
Provides enhanced image stabilization system for the following:
Image stabilization in half-pressing the shutter
        Image stabilization in “Focus Magnifier”
        Image stabilization in movie recording
        Image stabilization in other functions”

I actually think the stabilization is incredible. 1/3 with 210mm, yes please!

  1. A7II:
    Vorteile und Verbesserungen:
    Bildverbesserung bei den Objektiven SEL24240, SEL28F20, SEL35F14Z und SEL90M28G
    Verbesserte Bildstabilisierung:
Bildstabilisierung bei halb gedrücktem Auslöser und bei Fokusvergrößerung
    Bildstabilisierung im Filmaufnahmemodus

  2. why microsoft windows ? firmware has nothing to do with the computrer platform ! or am i wrong ?

        1. Why should he post two picture of the same damn thing just to show Mac…
Macs are for losers anyway 😛

  3. Does it provide “release priority” to the AF system?

Does it force magnified playback to go to AF selection point (like a900/700 did)?

Does it force magnified playback to go to MF selection point (like it should)?

Really getting tired of all the scrolling just to check a far corner focus. Magnified playback should magnify at my selected point instead of always reverting to center.

  4. New lens support…yes, and of course. But, update the a6000 firware without adding the XAVCs codec? Argghh!!!

I just don’t get it. An a5100 can have it, but not the a6000? An RX10 can have it, retroactively, and so can an A77ii, but not the a6000?

I have an A7s and need B-cams on the same codec for ease of workflow in 3 to 5 camera setups (shooting live bands). The a5100 rocks, but it is FAR from being quick to navigate and set manually from situation to situation. The RX10 rocks, but f2.8 on that sensor gives about f7 DOF. The A77ii rocks, but is twice the money and weight, with a minimum f3.5 during video with C-AF (B-cam, unmanned on sticks).

Shouldn’t the best available APSc in the e-mount line be just as capable as its little brother, especially since the little brother is literally the same camera internally?

    1. I Agree 100%. Even the rx1 which was released before to a6000 got the vac codec with a firmware upgrade. I can only assume Sony is doing this to make the “Rumored” a7000 more attractive to current owners of the a6000. And the a5100 doesn’t shot 11fps keeping those who still want to shoot stills waiting for a7000. And don’t get me started about 8bit. Uncompressed 422 8 bit from the hdmi, who does that $hit! 422 8 bit almost sound like a tech oxymoron. And after this http://nofilmschool.com/2014/08/sony-officially-responds-f5-4k-hack My eyes were finally opened and understand it’s just a issue of greed.
Don’t get me wrong I love Sony’s products but hate hate hate that they cripple products the way they do. Im sure waiting after large shows to release product helps determine what features they can release in each camera.

        1. I think the poster meant rx10 being a older camera then the a6000 and received Xavc with a firmware upgrade.

      1. That link! Holy crap! I had never read or even heard about that. So with a couple lines of code anyone was able to unlock 4k on their camera? And Sony’s official statement was that if anyone did this they wouldn’t honor the warranty. I kinda want to punch something right now just out of frustration not anger, like maybe a kitten,

        1. Theoretically, all cameras can have modified firmware if the coders are able to break through the encryption, unpack current FW and repack and install new FW.

Panasonic GH1, GH2, GF1 are examples of this.
Magic Lantern did it differently, by running a sofware “alongside” Canon’s own firmware.

OBVOUSLY…any of these modifications voids the warranties on those products. Sony is not doing it just for kicks.

In the initial stages of the GH hacks, some people bricked their cameras becuase of their carelessness when installing the new firmware. It didn’t happen often, but it did. Also, the developers that made these firmware patches constantly run the danger of ruining their hardware because they strive to push their gear’s computing power to the maximum so, obviously again, Panasonic wouldn’t cover any warranty for them.

          1. True, but from what I just researched from two separate articles is that the hacker realized the hardware and software to run the 4k output was exactly the same minus the two lines of code left out, and didn’t jeopardize the camera at all, it was just not implemented in the cheaper camera. I don’t have either camera so I can’t speak from experience but this sound right up Sony’s alley.

    2. All the cameras that have received the XAVC codec have been fitted with the Bionz X processor. It appears the earlier Bionz processor can’t handle the codec.

        1. RX10 is cybershot, A6000 is Alpha, two different teams at that point I suppose.
And can you be sure that the development of the A6000 did not start before the RX10?

      1. I’m pretty sure that’s not the case. Take a close look at the internals of the a5100 compared to the a6000. Same camera, with minor differences: a6000 has EVF, faster burst rate, extra buttons and wheels, where a5100 has touch-screen focus. Everything related to moving the image from the sensor into a video container on the SD card, from hardware to software, looks the same. There’s no justification in not providing the better, higher end camera with the same, more efficient and robust XAVCs video codec.

        1. because the a6000 already sells so well, they dont need to add xavc to attract buyers. Rx10 and A77ii simply did not sell well.

    1. And they still have the worst sensors in the industry, go figure. And their cameras are overpriced and outdated, this makes the typical Canon buyer and idiot.

    2. isn’t that obvious? the people who go to Sony are tech enthusiasts, people who dwell on rumor sites, and other dark internet dweller. Beginner/Ordinary people who doesn’t have any clue or doesn’t have any recent photography related knowledge goes to Canon & Nikon.

  5. Gotta love Sony. You buy a brand new camera freshly introduced to the market (a6000) and 4 months later there is a lower, cheaper model with the same sensor and much better video capabilities (a5100). F*CK. BRING US THE XAVC-S!

    1. Lol welcome to the tech world. Camera will always get better and cheaper. Just buy the new model if old can’t keep up with your need. Or better stick with drawing instead of photography if you don’t have the $$ hahaaaa

    2. Yes but the A5100 doesn’t have the AF capabilities of the A6000 or the viewfinder.

Sony has ZERO obligation to introduce XAVC-S in the A6000 as they may wish to add it to a newer model to replace the A6000.

Of course it would be nice if they did upgrade it but expecting them to do it because they did it for a few other models is opening yourself up for crushing disappointment.

Also the difference between XAVC-S and AVCHD isn’t that great. If you are really serious about video get an external recorder. The A6000 doesn’t even have a microphone jack either.

    3. So!? Thats completely normal. Even in the cars world an Audi A4 gets newer features if it is only few months newer than an Audi A8 (the flag-ship model). Technic evolves. I don’t even know if the A6000 has all hardware capability to offer XAVC-S.

  6. The whiners constantly complain of no firmware updates, so when a set of updates is released guess what happens? They Complain!

    1. Hahaha, yeah I think the a6000 owners were really waiting on the update the only covers randoms lenses and nothing else.

    2. Maybe because these are not updates that are requested.

There is no new video codec
There is no lossless ARW choice
There is no XAVCS support for a6000 (which has the same Bionz X as RX10 and RX100m3)
There is no improved AF for a7 or a7r or RX1
There is no focus peaking improvements

Most updates here are for new lenses and although good to have, they are not ground breaking.

      1. When it comes to purchasing a camera, unless the company is promising future features via firmware down the line (such as new codec, 4k, etc.), a potential buyer should assume that the camera they are buying will only feature what it was released with. Sometimes bonuses happen but nothing is guaranteed.

        1. some people think a camera is like a pc and they can run any software on them and get the desired results. all features need to work smoothly with the hardware. when you make one feature complex, you cannot make another one complex at the same time.

          1. Panasonic GH2, GH1, GF1.
Sony F5 (just read the post further down)
            Canon with ML installed.
Of course you can run some firmware and get desired results.

          2. did they go through extensive tests to see if they cause any drawbacks?
in some cases it might be true though that you can add a feature by just changing the firmware if the resources are available, but to me some feature cannot be changed using just a firmware, e.g. lossless raw.

          3. Look it would be nice if Sony updated their cameras BUT they have ZERO obligation to their customers to come up with new firmware releases.

So IF they do introduce some nice firmware its a bonus and NOT the norm.

For whatever cameras you mentioned above there are MANY more which didn’t receive any upgrades via firmware.

        2. I do get that, but if the resources are available, and with Sony’s history of FW updates for the NEX line, the RX10, the a77 and so on… one would think that maybe they would revisit the more prominent cameras in their lineup and add a little something on top that would make people think of them more fondly.

Especially for those of us who have owned several Sony cams through the years and had at least one considerably useful update.

      2. Lossless might not be possible on the A7 series cameras though without having an impact on many of the other features.

If the file size jumped by a factor of 1.5x or 2x, then the battery would take a large hit. Writing the file to the card is an intensive process of the camera.
It could well make a huge hit on the burst speed as well, and these ones aren’t exactly amazingly fast like the SLTs we had before.

It might be entirely possible, but just because something is possible, doesn’t mean it’s the best for it.

      3. And there is no coke machine. I specifically requested that update!!

…seriously: you can’t expect for ANY update, be thankful what you’ve got ;)… Sorry, thats just the way it is.

    3. I don’t blame them. Samsung nx1 had 3 firmware updates already after release and these are not just bug fixes. A company that stands behind its products is what makes people loyal to a brand.

  7. You’ve got to include everything Sony put in the post. The stabalization updates for the A7II are not new. They were in the previous 1.1 firmware update.

Benefits provided by previous updates and included in version 1.20:
Provides enhanced image stabilization system for the following:
    – Image stabilization in half-pressing the shutter
    – Image stabilization in “Focus Magnifier”
    – Image stabilization in movie recording
    – Image stabilization in other functions

  8. I have updated all of mine sony’s cams today. A7s / A7r and A6000. First of all this firmware updates shows difference. NO question about it …

However A6000 turn it self in to brick. I did call Sony and there was not answer how to fix it but send it to Sony service for repair.

OK. I did fix it. How? Nowadays all of these DSLR’s are computers with motherboard installed in them. Every motherboard got a memory chip. Draining ( Flashing ) chip is a solution. Therefore no need to panic.

There is a number of steps to take and I will most likely post this procedure on Google+. This whole thing is in regards to Mac computer with Maverick latest OS.

      1. … latest version of Maverick … pardon me … then it has to go in to Yosemite to complete the thing. Now all this in case of an accident.

Revels there is a little bit more to it however …

  9. Great to see Sony still releasing updates for the A7s but still.. no usability updates based on user feedback? Like record on half shutter, assigning APS-C to function button, etc?

    1. Usability updates are more complex and thus have higher risk of introducing new bugs, which could end in a major headache if they are severe and affect many.
Besides, it won’t help the sale of new cameras and causes development costs.

  10. I had severe issues to install the 1.20 update on my A7R even by following exactly the instruction. The camera did not start after the update, I only got a black screen. Resting it turned on for 45 minutes didn’t help either. In a desperate attempt I pressed all kind of buttons on the camera until I finally turned accidentally the Mode wheel into AUTO mode. A green “i” appeared in the upper left corner, and suddenly the camera came back to life. Now everything runs smoothly in all modes. The startup time of the camera is clearly reduced.

  11. Just updated to 1.2 on my A7s. So far so good

    1. Off/On is faster
    2. Power Save Start Time is now working. This will save battery power.

  12. Where’s the firmware update for the RX-1? It could use a little improvement on auto focus and they could add time-lapse.

  13. I download the firmware 1.2 and it is ok. At the same I download the firmware update 1.2 for the lens 55 mm and 24-70 mm and it is ok. But for the 35mm/2.8 I connect but cannot download and the bar on the display doesn’t move. Any of you had some problem?

        1. @ / Set sleep in Preferances on NEVER and lock it.

@ Use original sony USB cable.

@ Do not run any other software in time of upgrade.

@ Make sure that you refresh system Permissions

@ Then run Update few times and it will work.

P.s. Let me know if it works for you …

          1. unfortunately for me it is not working. I don’t know why, for the 55 mm and 24 70 mm the upgrade is downloaded in max 10 seconds, for this 35 mm is lock with bar and message “updating the lens…do not turn off”. The cable is the same and original. Maybe next step is try to upgrade with a windows pc, other I don’t know…

          2. … then create and log in as a new user, make sure you repair system Permissions and it should go.

But you say, “upgrade is downloaded in max 10 seconds” are we talking about downloading the upgrade or actually running the upgrade …

          3. thank you for your help!
I mean 10 seconds is the last step of the procedure to make running the upgrade and check in the setting of the camera that was 1.2, that was ok for two lens. Sorry but I didn’t get your point, what do you mean log as new user? you mean make a new sony account?I didn’t get you what do you mean as “repair system permission..-??”thanks

          4. … aaaa … If you are on Mac computer you can create “new User” file in Users&Groups in your preferences and log in as for example “Joe”. Then when you restart your Mac you will be asked if you like to log in under your name or as “Joe” new user. Ones you log in as new user Joe then you can repair operating system permissions. Your Mac will be ready.

Then you double click on sony file you have downloaded and you are ready to go.

          5. I try with pc windows and it is the same…not downloading…since I bought last week the lens 35 mm next week I will call sony italy and eventually return the lens. Why do you suggest to me to create a new user, I think the problem is the lens and not the pc or mac or the file, isn’it?thks

          6. Lens is fine. You must be working with corupted file for this upgrade or the OS on your PowerBook needs to clean permissions. Simple as that.

          7. sorry, now I get your point. I have to open the utility disk on my mac. But just to avoid problem with my mac since I never did before, if I have problem with the file for the lens update .dmg, I have to clen all the disk and cannot clean only the file corrupted?thks

          8. Step One : Delete file which is posibly corupted and use utility Cocktail which complitaly and safely clean your Mac

Step Two : download new fresh upraditing .dmg file for your lens from Sony USA

Step Three : NO (!) other application runing Do your lens upgrade.

            it should work just fine

          9. Yesterday I read on SAR that sony found defective 35mm lens that frozen uploading to v1.2 and they will correct. That is what happen to my lens!
A lot of trying in the weekend but the faulty was the lens.
Anyway, thank you for giving your support!
