Sony Japan showed the Sony shares in the worldwide mirrorless market. You really don’t see such detailed reports very often. The Sony NEX system leads the market in US,Canada, France, Russia, China, Taiwan and Korea. And is on second place in Japan, UK, Germany and Hong Kong. 18% of all sold interchangeable lens cameras are mirrorless. I guess Brand A and Brand B on the scheme are Olympus and Panasonic. The new NEX lenses and new NEX-5r/6 cameras will certainly help to strengthen the business.

Sony first
Do you think mirrorless has the potential to take over the camera market one day (i.e. more than 50%)?
I think so, yes.
It depends how you classify cameras. If you include smartphones (like Nokia which got better image quality then some of compacts) then there’s not even a slightest chance for that.
If you won’t – I think it might happen, though not anytime soon. Compacts are striking back with large sensors – and they got enormous advantage over mirrorless – they are really portable (not portable only according to marketing ”experts” like the mirrorless), they are simple to use and (relatively) cheap. So if P&S manufacturers keep on releasing cameras with 1″ sensors or similar – mirrorless will have hard time becoming a majority of the market.
Someone will make a smartphone with an interchangeable lens mount sooner or later. If nothing else, just to say they did it first.
hehe, I wouldn’t be surprised, really 🙂
I don’t think so, the smartphone would become to thick to cary everywhere. It would be a camera with a phone function 🙂
I think cameras in smartphones are great for snapshots, but not good for creative photography.
Interchangeable lens mounts are only needed by people changing lenses, while most small sensors are better off with a zoom lens or converters – but there’s the also the panorama iPhone already: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNBP18nrRdw
already been done

😉
I assume that mirrorless is already above 90%.
Perhaps you were thinking of mirrorless with interchangeable lenses?
congrats sony… 🙂
go sony go
It would be higher if Sony deliver the product within a week after that announced a new product… I believe..
Yong> That is a good one, I remember when they announce 50mm F1.8 Nex lenses. Only lately I see stock available here, now I see a 35mm f1.8. Will freeze my purchase till some lab report is out for comparison.
That’s quite weird, cause I seen it available in shops in Poland roughly 2 months after initial release. No idea where you live though.
It’s getting too mainstream for me… 😉
“I guess Brand A and Brand B on the scheme are Olympus and Panasonic.”
why these two?
Doesn’t Nikon have a say too in the mirror-less market with the Nikon-1 line of cameras?
I wonder if “Brand A” and “Brand B” really are Panasonic and Olympus (not necessarily respectively)? I can understand Samsung barely rating as they’ve done a poor job selling their system, and Fuji are too new and too premium to really drive the numbers, but Nikon at least I would have expected to be up there.
Whoever it is, I’m surprised that three companies account for 80% of all mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. That’s a similar sort of oligopoly to what we see with DSLRs and point and shoots.
From the Amazon.de best-seller list i would suspect that “Brand B” (1st place in Germany) actually is Nikon.
Actually I don’t believe this kind of report….Maybe I will believe it while they disclose the name of Brand A, Brand B Company….
I guess Brand E in Korea in second place has to be Samsung.
I wonder what Brand D in Germany is that came in 3rd. Leica isn’t that popular there is it?
What’s Brand C that’s doing well in China and Taiwan? Nikon? Fuji?
Considering how fast the mirrorless segment is growing compared to DSLR-market, Sony has very good changes here for total camera-market domination.
If Sony can do these things, they have world domination really soon:
-Strengthen the current Nex-line-up, especially with lenses. Two new camera-models: The smallest Nex possible with few new pancace lenses and bigger APS-C-NEX than Nex-7 for those who want best possible ergonomics.
-Full frame Nex, with new FF-lenses
-New user-interface for Nex-cameras
-compact RX-line with 1-inch, APS-C and FF-sensor cameras. ALL with EVF or at least option for removable one.
-Keep Alpha-line alive but put emphasis for big, fast aperture G or Zeiss lenses, which would otherwise be enormous in Nex-series. But also offer two version of those lenses: One with normal A-mount, and one with built in E-mount-adapter; there will always be people who want to use big and heavy lenses with E-mount anyway.
If Sony is successful for delivering these in 1-2 years, it can take camera-manufacturer throne faster than anyone can realise.
That’s for fiscal 2011 – I imagine that fiscal 2012 will be quite different with the entry of Nikon into the market & the stock problems caused by the Thailand floods.
Yeah it will be different
Sony will be even stronger
😉
NEX6, pancake zoom, UWA… Sony delivered roughly everything ppl been waiting for, so I think your guess is quite accurate.
Meanwhile Nikon done almost nothing to improve it’s Nikon 1 system, and Canon came out with M-sized fail pushing more people towards better mirrorless systems.
wow! this is whats happening right now o_0
The most amazing thing to me is that Sny is beating Samsung in Korea! I have many Korean friend, and I know how fiercely patriotic and loyal they are to Korean things, especially for all things Samsung.
It does and it doesn’t surprise me at the same time. Samsung are too conservative for the mirrorless market. They have nice products no doubt, but just aren’t aggressive enough in feature sets or sensor technology to get the ball rolling- and if they were their marketing department (or lack thereof completely) would drop the ball and it would be all for not.
Samsung at this point might be best to just drop out of digital imaging altogether no matter how much I like their mirrorless system.
Carl G.
If the manufacturers can get fast[er] and more accurate AF focusing sorted out, ALL future cameras will be mirrorless. Irrespective of whether the AF is contrast detect or Phase Detect or a hybrid. Whatever works will suffice.
The mirror[pellicle or flip-up] is really just an obstacle to better and more robust functionality and I for one would like to see it’s early demise. It just cannot come too soon.
brand a = panny, brand b = oly! am i right?
So this guy from Nikon said the 1 system was number one in Europe. So where’s Nikon in the table above?
http://www.dpreview.com/articles/8481514243/photokina-2012-interview-dirk-jaspers-of-nikon-part-2
It says fiscal year 2011 on the chart… No Nikon 1 in 2011.
Nikon 1 was released in 2011. September to be exact.
September 2011 is considered Q1 of fiscal year 2012 at many companies.
But in Japan fiscal year 2011 = April 2011 – March 2012
This is also according to Sony’s internal survey (as stated on the image). I would expect a natural Sony bias in the survey (not Sony manipulation). How did sony distribute the survey? If it was at photokina, may be very accurate. if they had a poll on a site like SAR or Sony style, then maybe not so much.
I don’t want to start a brand argument, but I think this revelation and the new data showing Nikon is now number one in Europe indicates a definite stall if not decline in m43. The next trend after a stall caused by competitors is usually a precipitous deline.
Although canon introduced a lackluster offering, the marketshare will get shaken up again in 2013. What we’re seeing is canikon and Sony in the process of taking top 3. M43 will hover near the bottom with Samsung. It says nothing about the quality of the m43 cameras, which are pretty good now that they use Sony sensors. It’s just that Sony now have a stronger lineup and a larger sensor, and canikon has too strong a brand even when they offer garbage mirror less.
There is only one market with complete statistics of sale and that’s Japan, on all other markets they are guessing about sale numbers.
Nikon 1 Nikon 1 Nikon 1….. What the hell are you guys on?
I live in a tourist town with people from all over the world often armed with a camera & keep a close eye on what people use & have never seen a single Nikon 1 being used!
I went to the Goodwood revival the other week – lots of people, lots of money, LOTS of cameras!
Saw my first Nikon 1 in the wild…. Then again I saw 2 Pentax K-01s….
Tons of Canons, quite a few Nikons, a smattering of Nexs, a few Alphas Panny & Olympus cameras & a few rarities – Nikon 1, Pentax, Leica etc
Mirrorless is going to be Sony’s cash cow moving forward and with its sensor tech it should dominate, but CaNikon still have much higher sales with DSLR’s and that’s not going to change anytime soon given the sheer number of people with their respective lenses. Mirrorless will eat into DSLR sales, but in major markets like the U.S. and Europe it will lag behind DSLR’s for at least the next 5 or 6 years if not longer. There are just too many people with CaNikon SLR’s and now there are more FF options in addition to higher MP APS-c cameras for those looking to upgrade.
Sony also doesn’t have the distribution in the U.S. that the big two have – CaNikon is in the 3 biggest retailers (Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target) along with most of the membership warehouse stores. Outside of Best Buy, most of what you see from Sony is P&S and small camcorders. Unless that changes and Sony gets its cameras in front of more people, its DSLR sales will not see big growth. I feel like Sony is heading in the Pentax direction with the SLT’s, a small but loyal niche brand.
That being said – I’m still ordering the A99. 😀
I agree, I don’t see Sony trying to eat up the market, they’re just effectively siphoning money where the defenses are lowest.. Am I even making any sense?
I don’t care if Sony is selling like that, I want f***** lenses!!!
@calxn. Still trolling, and full of BS.
Reality is NEX is hobbled by terrible choice of flange back, and m43 continues to dominate for flexibility and compactness of lens line up. That ain’t going to change. Sony may dominate in FF MILC within a few years, but m43 is here to stay. The OMD-EM5 and GH2/GH3 have established cred and sales are proving that up. Canon need to get off their butt and begin to compete seriously in this enthusiast MILC segment. Nikon’s choice of 1″ sensor might in the long run prove really smart and clean up at the bottom end, if others don’t beat them to it – it would be sad to see Nikon wither. Time will tell, but to write off m43 on the basis of recent NEX successes is utter bull.
On a different note (gripe), when camera companies make people wait months before the cameras actually become available to the public, I equate them trying to be a trendy club, like making people wait in line when it’s empty inside. Make the damn cameras available it they believe in them instead of trying to build up hype.
Look at Nikon D600 – came available right after they announced it. Not saying Nikon haven’t play the same game, but the way I look at it, everyday they wait, it’s a lost sale because a new technology is right around the corner. It should be a no brainer – sell as many as you can at this moment. Tease and wait game is a losing proposition.
Panasonic GH leads. Sony just eat dust!
