All the people who have the A7r on order can finally also buy the Sony FE 28-70mm lens at BHphoto (Click here) and Adorama (Click here). Until now that lens was available only coupled with the A7 camera!
And again…prepare a coffee for your postman! I received more confirmations from sources and readers that the A7-A7r and 35mm Zeiss lens will ship right in time (if not a couple of days earlier!).

So no chance Amazon may ship this week?? What a let down!
Anyway thanks for the info Andrea, really appreciate it! Also I’ve used the links you provided to preorder the a7R and lens so hopefully it’ll help you out in return!
Seems a bit pricey @ $500 for a slow kit lens.
We want early ship!! Lol can’t wait.
Why is there a one month difference in release dates between BH and Adorama? Any possiblity of there being a package offered with the A7R?
The 28-70mm lens is pretty expensive for a kit lens even if you compare to other full frame lens…especially since some of the recent tests show that it is not really a performer.
Could you please cite those sources, not trying to be snarky, I just haven’t seen this anywhere.
Pass! Prefer saving money for the better zoom that will come next year.
Exactamundo! I haven’t seen anything remotely compelling about this lens and especially not on the 36MP sensor. You’d be wasting your money on the A7R by putting a lens that is far outresolved by the sensor on the camera.
You can’t pass because there’s no other native zoom lens. What a joke.
Got focusing and/or sharpness issues today too, with A7+kit lens, will investigate tomorrow.
There will be plenty of these lens available much cheaper when people start receiving their A7 with kit. Many will buy the kit combo version because it is good deal , then will upgrade to the 24-70 f4 early next year . So the kit 28-70mm will be flooding ebay during the next several months at bargain prices.
If there is something i don’t get about the sony A7 is putting this “shitty lens” on front ! What is the point ? You want a FF for shallow DOF , resolution and lights gathering. That will give you NOTHING ! Just buy a NEX camera instead ! Sony really thinks that people are stupid or what ? Maybe they’re right to think so ! LOL.
Yes it’s hardly useful for anything, however it is the only lens I can get at this time, other than manual ones.
I thought I could at least use it in a studio setting, stopped down to F11, but even then my little Samsung NX300 delivers much better results with the prime lenses.
Hmmmmmmmmm …
f11 will only make it fuzzy (diffraction). f8 is the best it will do.
Of course your Samsung NX300 with primes will give you better performance than this kit lens ! More resolving Power, more contrast, better shallow DOF the ability to get down ISO setting cause your aperture will be greater, better colors and more money in your pocket ! But you won’t have a FullFrame to show off ! Cause FullFrame is everything for people who don’t know nothing ! I’m just kidding ! LOL 🙂
Not everybody needs or want shallow DOF with their full frame. I shoot landscapes all day long at f8 and f11 with my D800 . Sony may sell a bunch of these. I’m waiting for the 24-70 f4 , and f4 is fine for what I shoot .
I agree with you …I’m shooting micro 43 and Fuji X100s so razor Shallow DOF is not my thing. This lens Won’t definitly NOT be a landscape tools, the resolving power i’m sure will be under 10 MPX for sure. when you consider that the best Nikon Primes are 18-20 Mpix maximum ! You better wait for the 24-70mm F4.0 for sure. You never have more resolution than the resolving power of the lens you place on front, otherwise is the same effect of interpolation.
Another person with an elitist mentality. I wish I could afford to use $5000-10000 Leica lenses like you. I guess I’ll just throw my Zeiss lenses in the garbage and admit defeat to an internet elitist…
I’m not a ellitist person, never i’ll be able to buy Leica glasses ! I’m just being sarcassm because a lot of FullFrame Shooter blame APS and 43 Sensor for the Lack of Shallow DOF , resolution and ISO performance but there gonna put that lens on that beautiful FF Sensor ! I Don’t get it ? Worthless ! I’d rather have better lens with smaller sensor if i’m on budget, I’ll get better pictures for sure !
I’m a bit confused. It seems most kit lenses aren’t “that” good. I realize this lens is slow. But according to this review it’s not bad: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/52343069
We will be getting the A7, not the A7R. This will be my first full frame camera. I’m somewhat new to photography but well versed in video. Would this be an okay utility lens to have and learn the camera before I save up for a better zoom or prime lens in the future? Right now, we can’t afford more than the A7 + Kit lens. If I wasn’t pixel peeping, won’t this be a decent way to start out?
Yes, of course. You are only losing out on low light and some DOF. But, I’m sure it will make beautiful photos. It is a modern lens.
Also, if you have other lenses, get an adapter. The focus peaking makes the manual focus quite easy. I just bought some old (non-AI and AI) manual focus nikkor lenses 50mm F1.4, 85mm F2, and 105mm F2.5 on Ebay. All three for less than $500 out the door, and it was possible to go cheaper… it’s just a price-vs-condition judgement.
Thanks for those suggestions. I don’t have any lenses. This will be my first photo camera purchase so I’m a blank slate right now. So many choices it’s a bit overwhelming. I can’t afford much more right now than the a7 + kit lens, but I can see getting a nice fast prime in the near future (hopefully that’s not “too” much). The Zeiss 55 1.8 that’s coming looks nice but it may be a bit more than I can swing right now. Will those nikkor lenses you mention have stabilization and will they be able to auto focus or is that only with Sony lenses? Sorry, I’m new to all this. Just not sure if I should wait for only Sony lenses or go with an adapter and one of the lenses you mentioned (or similar ones from another brand)…so many choices.
Sony,… slow to release lenses… I don’t believe it. A real shocker.
Deja vu
So the real question is whether the Contax 35-70mm produces better images than this lens. Some of the samples adapted to other bodies look fantastic. Plus the lens is tiny. It just sucks the AF assist is disabled when using the adapter.

Damn that lens is overpriced. Much cheaper to just get the LAEA-4 adapter and throw on a Minolta 28-105 3.5-4.5
Or, get a rebel 🙂
