  1. I grabbed the A7r yesterday in Kuala Lumpur for around 1650€ including the LCS-BP2 camera-rucksack and 16GB Sony memory card and second battery 🙂 I planned to buy the A7 before but it wasn’t in stock. Also the point to have more megapixel when using my APS-C NEX lenses was worth it for me. Since I have the Zeiss 24 1.8 I won’t need to buy the FE 35mm 2.8 as it will only give me some more megapixel, however the 24 is around a stop faster and will offer the same DOF, I love that lens! Another “real” 35mm might be interesting, I think about the manual 35 1.4 or 35 1.2 from Voigtlander to get some more classic looking pictures.

For the rest I’m very happy so far, all my APS-C emount lenses autofocus a bit faster and more reliable in low light than on my NEX-7. What I also like is that you can switch off the constant autofocussing when you walk around. This was especially annoying on the Zeiss Touit 12mm lens where you could always hear the autofocus every some seconds.
Now I’ll wait for the FE 55 1.8 and will hopefully be happy for the rest of my life 😉

    1. “Since I have the Zeiss 24 1.8 I won’t need to buy the FE 35mm 2.8 as it will only give me some more megapixel”

In other words, you’re saying that the E 24 1.8 @ 1.8 has 53% more resolution than the FE 35 2.8 @ 2.8. Otherwise, the 35 will beat it. Also in this alternate universe of yours, you’re saying that a lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 is likely to have less CA wide open than a lens with a max aperture of f/2.8 @ f/2.8. In plain English, you’re also saying that a scene shot using the A7R+35 f/2.8 when “printed” to identical dimensions, isn’t going to be better than a shot of the same scene taken using a Nex-6+24 f/1.8. A bit hopeful, aren’t we? 🙂

This sort of thinking is typical for first-time full-frame upgraders and people who’re permanently stuck in the microFourThirds world. It’s time to toss that 24 1.8 in the bin… it had a good run 😉

      1. No, I didn’t say the 24 neccessarily is better than the 35 (despite 24 is bit more expensive). But FOR ME as an enthusiast it is good enough and I don’t mind using it with only 15 Megapixel. The 24 can resolve 24MP easily, for sure it outresolves the 15MP center crop of the A7r. Sure the 35 might be a bit better regarding image quality wide open and also use the whole sensor, but I can’t justify buying it for myself as the pictures will have just the same “look” to it in terms of DOF and rendering. The 24 can also focus much closer than the 35, 12cm vs 35cm. Don’t get me wrong, full frame is nice but the 24 is still a superb lens and I won’t sell it until Sony will bring some faster 35mm for the A7 that would give me a real advantage that justifies it FOR ME!

  2. The Canon handles better, holds better, got better support, a tonne of lenses. Do the Sony bean counters really think this time their throw it out and hope it sticks strategy would work And if it doesn’t? what’s next? Oh let me guess, the next new looking thing they will make in six months.

      1. And surprisingly enough, the 5D had more trouble with rolling shutter. The Sonys did very good imho. For most occasions, where moiré is a non issue, the A7/A7R IQ will most likely beat the highly regarded 5D MkIII. However, the raw video files of the Canon is an important factor for serious work. An external HDMI recorder with prores support is a good idea for those planning to use their A7/A7R for paying jobs.

      2. Not everyone who takes a photograph wants his photograph to look like one. Sharpness is a rich man’s concept. Look at the greatest photos in the world, they aren’t the sharpest.

        1. Not everyone thinks sharpness is great and that’s why Canon has greatly improved the dynamic range of their sensors over the past 5 years! Oh wait a minute…

        2. @Fanta: I’ve seen and read that argument so many times by now. But the simple fact is, you can easily remove detail, but adding is a whole different story. I know which I prefer.

    1. I’m sorry that Canon didn’t do much for you this year and that you have to commend in SAR to vent out your feelings. It’s ok, we understand.

        1. Yes how right you are. There’s no way Canon could innovate like Sony buy TAKING the mirror away and giving you a small LCD to look at they call an ” EVF”. Do you also believe that the Sony is the first digital camera to ever be made too? Last time I checked, Sony can’t even decide what to make, dslrs or dslt’s. Now it’s something else that’s really all the same. Don’t you worry though, next Sony camera will have no buttons and you can just talk to the camera and tell it what to do..”shoot! shoot! shoot!” LMFAO.

          1. Fair enough, you don’t like Sony. So is there any point checking this website others than just trolling?

EVF are the things that Canon can’t develop and integrate on their mirrorless cameras (oops there’s only one mediaocre model). Is this why you don’t like them? I guess they’ll be superb as soon as Canon starts integrating them sooner or later…

          1. Well, all these reviews can’t be wrong, oh wait they are all paid by Sony and written by evil Canon hating reviewers…

Enjoy your “soft” 5D and remember as long as you can see your self in the mirror there is not wrong with it.

      1. Oh don’t worry, not everyone is correct like you, I mean, look at all those ppl in the real world who have bought 5d cameras, compared to the tiny amount of Sony cameras…I guess they’re all wrong and stupid and you’re right cause you know what’s best cause you said so.

        1. Ok we’re all morons for buying our Sony’s. Sure. You’re right. There is no such thing as choice or personal preference and there is only one right answer to any question. Now that that’s out of the way, can you please either contribute something useful to the discussion or leave? In case you’re lost, just replace sonyalpha with canon in your URL address (it’s a little slow now, but I’m sure it’ll pick up eventually… don’t worry I will not be there trolling you when it does).

    2. It’s the 5D3’s ability to shoot raw video that kills off most/all of the 1080p competition in terms of pure video quality… not the lenses because the E mount can take any lens the EF mount can take. In fact, a camera like the A7/A7R would appeal to people using PL mount lenses, if they don’t want to go for Cine EOS cameras with PL mounts.

So they all have a place. Not everyone needs to shoot with the same camera and one person doesn’t need to be limited to one type of camera either.

      1. It’s not really fare to compare a hacked 5d3 to a newly released a7r in terms of raw video.
The 5d can not shot raw unless you trick it into it. It is possible, super unlikely, that the same raw video will be unlocked in the a7.
I say super unlikely because Sony is very good at keeping hakers out of their tech these days

        1. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a “hack” or not, when it’s available to everyone to use for free. There’s no use in praising or defending the technological achievements of the OEMs unless they’re paying us for it… what matters is what end-users can do with these things right now.

        1. you must shoot alot of sharp bad photos. You should try the softer approach, that way, your bad photos wont be so sharp.

          1. How dare o accuse someone of taking bad photos without seeing a single photo of his. You are a Troll and a pathetic human being. I hope a never meet you.

  3. Thank you Andrew for that comparison. OK, there is visibly more moiré in this artificial test but the A7R output appears sharper to me. Perhaps also a matter of focusing?

The question for me is what that means in real life situations. I shot some videos under lowlight conditions and was blown away how much better it was compared to the NEX-7 footage. Will link them here later…

  4. The autofocus test by Egitoni of the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN shows the entire frame appears to be covered, even though the lens was designed for APS-C cameras. Of course it’s hard to evaluate from a youtube video showing just the LCD screen. Has anyone published any test images using that lens?
