At first look the [shoplink 7434]Sony 30mm macro[/shoplink] lens for NEX doesn’t look like it could become a hotseller. It’s way to big and to slow for me. But it’s a very cheap lens. And there is one more good news. The Japanese website DC.watch (Click here) posted a couple of full size image samples taken with the [shoplink 7207]NEX-C3[/shoplink] and the macro lens. And when looking at those images I can say that image look very good! Click on the thumbnails below where I linked some of the images made by DC.watch.
P.S.: The lens will be available in Japan from September 22. We Europeans and Americans will have to wait a bit more to get our hands on that lens (mid October).
You can preorder the lens and check the availability date by clicking those direct search links. 30mm macro at [shopcountry 7434].

looks good.
Funny, this could actually be the only E-mount lens I will buy aside from the kit…
I’m looking at the city-scape picture. It’s good but not as good as I was expecting really. The corners and borders are a bit soft. I would expect a small aperture prime of that size to have excellent sharpness across the entire frame. This doesn’t look much better than the 18-55 zoom – CA is much better controlled but sharpness is about the same.
way too big? geez… get a P&S already…
Looking good! Lack of fastness is not an issue with macro-photography, because you really can’t use fast apertures anyway, due to the DOF-requirements. Picture of that skipper-butterfly is a good example. The person who took the picture should have used a much slower aperture. Now the details in hindwing are lost! But anyway, looking a really good lens!
The example pictures are mostly close-ups, not real macro pics. As you got to get very close to the subject with this lens it will be difficult to achieve macros of insects etc. without scaring them away.
Producing a fast macro lens with focus limiter could’ve turned this in a very useful macro + fast normal lens and would have solved two problems at once!
Too slow? It’s a macro lens!
Bokeh looks nice. Still way too big for a 30mm, though.
This lens wasn’t in stock already? I seen it, and several sample photos from this lens quite long ago (although I haven’t seen it in shop)… wasn’t it released few months ago? o_O
Weird…
Pretty sure it’s not in stock anywhere.
I’ve been searching for it for the last couple of months and haven’t seen anything on ebay or anywhere else (other than pre-order links). These are the first samples I’ve seen too.
It’s on eBay from HK already for ages.
Yes it is on ebay but sys “Estimated between Thu. Oct. 27 and Tue. Nov. 1”
So not really on ebay either.
Yep… looks like it wasn’t released after all. Well, anyway: the glass looks solid, it’s somewhat similar to NEX kit lens (what can be seen on photos anyway), shots from it seem to be really good quality, (quite standard as for a macro lens). And as it was pointed out: the aperture isn’t really an obstacle in anything. Though for macro purpose you’d do better by getting longer lens through adapter (Tamron 90mm f/2.8 works miracles) and focus manually (you don’t want to use AF with macro anyway).
with regular DSLR’s you wouldn’t AF with macro, but i’m wondering if with the NEX it would actually be more useful, since it has continuous AF
Dslr have continuous AF as well.
Will it come in black?
Not making it 2.0 is a missed opportunity.
But it’s a macro. Fast lenses aren’t desired for a macro. Pretty much all macro lenses are 2.8 or up. What is really a missed opportunity is not making this at least 60mm or longer. Longer macro’s are much more versatile.
Why would you shoot macro at f2 though? Mine is always stopped down as much as I can get away with given the available light.
It’s available in Japan on September 22. I just happen to be in Tokyo that day and may pick it up for my NEX-5.
I can see some people buying this lens, but since you’ll be in manual anyway I’d just get a second-hand Minolta 100mm f2.8, Tamron 90mm f2.8 or Sigma 105mm f2.8. They will be cheaper, more flexible and a LOT sharper.
Not being a stickler, but I don’t understand how $400-$600 lenses would be cheaper than this Macro $250 lens? Not including the adapter.
images don’t appear that encouraging. they have to show better samples, otherwise if this is what the lens is capable of, there are much better and cheaper macros out there with the same lens dimension.
I agree
These pictures weren’t taken with much effort once you see the original photo.
What a joke of a lens. 30mm is too short for any serious macro. Well at least it’s fast so you can use it as a fast normal lens that will be useful for low light pics. Oh wait, it’s f/3.5. This is truly the most useless e-mount lens.
I just pre-ordered my NEX 7 for scuba diving. I agree 30mm is way too short for a usable macro. I may just get wet diopters for the 18-55mm kit lens which gives me a little more flexibility underwater. Too bad one can’t use the Canon 60mm or even the 100mm 2.8 L series with this thing using an adapter. I know the ports for the Nauticam SLR rigs actually have a manual focus knob, so it would be interesting if the NEX 7 case could be adapted to this set-up. Just a shame Sony didn’t make it a 45-60mm from the start. 30mm just seems so useless as you said.
Marsh any more thoughts on the Macro 30mm? I also have the NEX7 with Nauticam housing and wanting to do macro photography
