    1. Yea they failed big time, they should have released a 28-300 f/1.8 kit lens with warming function for those cold winter days.

        1. You want a constant 2.8 and I want a 28-300 f/1.8. What’s so weird about that? Ok, I guess I can live without the warming function…

        1. I am pretty sure Div was having a joke but I guess like most people who use a brand name in their nick that you have a zero tolerance approach to anything but praise for Sony.

    2. What the hell are you complaining about? Get an A mount lens like the Zeiss 24/70 f2.8, Sigma, Tamron or a Canon or a Nikon: with an adapter there’s plenty of choice.
I will never understand some people and the continuos whining…

      1. He wouldn’t have bought it anyway.

“Sony failed with a product that I don’t want and don’t have money to buy anyway. FAIL!!!”

      2. So much aggressiveness, how old are you really?
You find in inappropriate for a possible customer to express his complains and desires?

Are you from China or what?

    3. it is a kit lens….
f2.8 zoom lens? you will probably complain about how big it was and how it made no sense to carry around a mirrorless camera.

    1. I expected some decent lenses at launch, that’s all. I don’t like the fact that only 3 lenses are available and none of them really work for me.

      1. So what if they don’t work for you? Who cares?

Since they don’t work for you doesn’t mean they failed. Just that it doesn’t work for you.

Stop being like a rebel teenager with an opinion problem and grow up.

        1. Dude, take a chill pill and stop bashing other users.
The customer has the right to complain all they want, it’s up to the seller if he listens to those complaints or not.

And after all, you’re paying money for something YOU want, not what the seller wants, and it’s natural for you to express your desire for this or that.
The seller should try to cater to that, provided there are enough people asking for the same thing, enough to be profitable for the seller.

So my advice to you dear reader, STFU or take it down a notch, nobody put you in charge of RUDELY silencing anyone who doesn’t follow your opinion.

          1. Wow the pot calling the kettle black.

At least I had the courtesy of not throwing f bombs around.

But you have shown your true colors. Congratulations.

Btw, to be a customer one has to buy something. And not be trashing a company because every little whining wish you have was not attended.

One more for the pile of “didn’t have money to buy so it’s terrible *sobs*”.

            Good bye

  1. Oh come on guys! Looks like the only acceptable aperture for a standard zoom is constant F/2.8? Why not getting this and a pretty fast prime and be happy with it. Imagine all the wasted years of photography in the past without your 28-70 F2.8. BTW: I’m sure that you will be able to get the kit lens from those who don’t like it pretty soon for a better price. And it’s a fair move not to sell it for the in-kit price for all the people who were smart enough to get it as a kit already.

    1. Sony constantly got flak in NEX reviews for the large lenses, so they seem to be focussing on smaller but slower lenses for their smaller camera, at least at the moment.

No doubt an f2.8 would be pretty much the size of the a-mount Zeiss 24-70mm f2.8 including adaptor and you can already do that if you want.

In fact Sony already list it in the marketing brochure for the a7/a7R – they seem consider all the a-mount lenses as part of the a7 system. So they’d argue the a7 has tons of lenses already as well as 3 extra ones, not 3 in total.

And legacy lens support is a valid part of the camera too, and Sony have even added features to support it, and freely made the mount specs available. Tons of fast lenses available if you want them.

If you think there are only 3 lenses, that’s your choice, but for me I’m buying body only and seeing how well my voigtlander and Contax G lenses work before deciding whether I want to buy any of the FE lenses later.

  2. Well, the price will be lowered substantially when the kit-buyers will dump the kit lens for the Zeiss zoom.

On FF the lens isn’t impressive at all but maybe this lens is great on APS apart from the somewhat weird range of 42-105. The wide end resolution falloff seems to start only way beyond the APS frame and the long end seems unproblematic throughout. If it also has acceptable colors and flare resistance, I might pick up one in Japan (you pay about 330EUR new today, it will probably come down to about 200 after the Zeiss release).

        1. Seems so, if you look at the center of the sample shots on the a7r which is all you’ll gonna see on APS. Also, it’s only 100g heavier than the APS kit zoom and it’s weather sealed.

      1. Sony APS-C kit lens is 3.5-5.6 . again on APS-C, so how this can be slow for a kit lens? it is well adequate IMHO

  3. But the lens performance is quite ok, I got my A7 last Friday and feel good to the kit lens.

Although the lens is not fast enough but it is still quite sharp.

    1. Well it will be slightly longer but not very wide.

You might benefit from the APS-C sweet spot, meaning sharp edges and corners.

I prefer my walk around zooms to be wider though. 28mm on APS-C is approaching ‘standard’ focal length.

    2. It remains to be seen how it will do with the NEX 7 24MP as the center crops of the a7r images only have the same pixel pitch like 16MP on APS.

With that having been said, it looks promising so far. It will most definitely have much better corner performance than the 18-55. Maybe it does even better than the 16-70 at equal focal lengths as it doesn’t have to deal with aperture and size constraints.

It’s up to you if you have no problem with the weird range of 42-105. I personally don’t as I mostly shoot normal to short tele.

  4. If Sigma can put out a 16-35 F1.8 for APS-C, for less than 1k, why can’t Sony put out a similar focal range, but not with 1.8, I’d settle for 2.8 even.

Why is this not possible and why are you putting off people who would want that?
Seriously stop trolling and accept the fact that Sony is either slacking or uninspired.

And no, I don’t want to use an adapter, I want a native lens.

    1. The volume of A mount users is much less then F or EF mount users, so if Sony were to do that lens it’ll be more expensive and there’s the whole idea of would people buy it or not. Sony is to be blamed for this as well cause of all the experiments they did with A a mount over the years, which caused many ppl to abandon their system.

And Sigma is making the same lens for all DSLR mounts so the lacksture of A mount lens sales will most likely be offsetted by the sales made by EF or F mount.

Perhaps we’ll see this lens once Sony have the sales to encourage them to make it.

      1. I think they should bring out an update to the A900 but with the economies of scale it would be expensive. If Sony did would you consider that to be experimenting as well.

        1. Have you forgotten Sony attempts at their entry level A mount cameras? The one without proper grip and etc etc, heck I forgot which model, but it comes with plastic mount whereas the previous one comes with metal mount.

I’m not surprised that many A mount users are uneasy with Sony lately, they have been focusing on E mount and it’s getting better each iteration, I own a D300s previously, sold it for the NEX7 and now waiting for the A7r. I choose E mount cause I’m looking to lighten my load during travels.

With all these innovations coming out from Sony lately, I’m actually looking forward to the A mount updates next year. And I’m in the camp that believes a Z-Shift sensor which if true, suppose to bring compatibility with Nikon and Canon lenses would help Sony gain some marketshare as in most cases, people are hesitant to switch cause they’ll have to sell all their lenses and by doing so, would make whatever Sony comes out more appealing.

    2. Why can’t Canon? Why can’t Nikon? Why can’t Olympus?

Seriously people need to look more objectively, rather than whinging about what isn’t. Don’t like the Sony lineup? Don’t buy into it, it is really quite simple. The FE lenses that have been announced to date are pretty in line with everything else on the market.

They could have released f2.8 zooms and f1.4 primes but they would cost a lot more and be a lot bigger than the current FE lenses. A canon 24-70mm IS f4 costs about in line with the Zeiss.

Compare to Olympus, the 12-35mm is their closest competitor to the Zeiss f4 and costs over $2k and is massive.

Honestly, I couldn’t give a rats arse about f2.8 zooms that you clearly pine for, what because that’s what the pros and shit use? Because they will make you more awesomer?

Don’t bother comparing to third party lenses, they will always be cheaper than OEMS.

And again, don’t like the FE lineup – here’s a clue, don’t buy into it, clearly the ‘other’ systems are more your thing.

  5. Getting my A7 today 🙂
Looking forward to making tests with kit zoom, maybe it’s sharp at F8 or F11, then I could at least use it in the studio.

      1. hmm, the status at my sony account told me, they shipped my A7r yesterday… since this morning i can track but i only get a “We expect your shipment information soon.”

        can’t wait : (

  6. Even if it’s only a kit lens, it doesn’t seem to deliver enough value for the money. From the sample images I’ve seen so far, I wouldn’t buy that lens for $100, much less for $500. I’d rather adapt my old and battered manual-focus Tokina 28-70/3.5-4.5 for Minolta MD, which, of course, has neither AF nor OSS, but is smaller, lighter and even faster and I really wouldn’t even rule out the possibilty that it has better IQ.

    1. If you can live with the range, the Minolta 35-70mm f4 is supposed to be excellent, small, light and sharp wide open. Go for all of $50 and will AF.

    2. I’m only getting the kit lens for video with OSS. For the $200 it costs in a kit it’s kind of worth it. Kit lenses are ALWAYS WAY overpriced on their own.

  7. I’m just waiting for the Zeiss 24-70mm to come out – and a flood of cheap kit zooms will hit the eBay market as people buy their “upgrades”

In the meantime, an open-box Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 for less than a Tamron is arriving tomorrow. (Note to self, downsample to 12MP to pretend it’s a sharp lens)

  8. Checking the Imaging Resource samples, the 28-70 shows no detectable CA at the wide end. If this is achievable in RAW, it is quite a selling point.

On the other hand, for the same amount spent, you could get a nice set of MD, FD, AI-S, etc. primes – and (if you don’t shoot MF already) learn quite a bit more about photography in the process.

    1. Sometimes, you just want to be lazy! I’m married not even one year, and she’s tired of me going “hang on, just need to change my lens”
