Two anonymous sources sent me small bits of A77 successor info:
– (SR4) Announcement will be made the first week of May (and availability in June!)
– (SR3) Camera can do 14 fps.
I am still not sure yet if Sony will also use new RX cameras and new A/E mount lenses. Hope to get SR5 confirmations soon!

If the 14 FPS is correct than I think the sensor will be a 24MP not 32MP, I hope so anyway
Let it be 24 MP as additional MP will result in more noise.
Doesn’t have to be. After this theory, 6MP from 10yrs ago should be less noisy…
Yep, my first Sony DSLR was the A300 (10MP), and that was unusable at anything more than ISO 800. The sensor technology dictates the noise levels more than simply the MP count.
+1.
If more MP would = more noise, A7 ISO performance would have been better than A7R. Where in reality A7r is way better.
D600 would have been better than D800, where in reality they are about the same… So more MP = more noise is a myth. Its all down to sensor tech.
Maybe they would come up with the A77 II and A77IIR that’ll will go 24mp and 36mp
+1 Hope sony learns from its mistakes .
Why are you so sure?
My initial thought too since the 24MP a6000 weights in, I believe, at 11 fps. But it depends on where Sony positions the a77ii. Conflicting rumors but I think SAR leans to a-mounts being higher-end so they need to really push the envelope to separate the lines and justify hundreds of dollars more.
Personally, I’d like to see a 32MP a77ii. I get the worry it’ll be noisy but Sony proved with the a7R they can up the MP ante and capture more detail without introducing noise.
Sony’s impressive AF performance bump on the a6000 has created a lot of enthusiasm and was exactly the right move to answer Fuji to stay ahead of the mirrorless pack. For a-mounts they need to boost IQ. More detail. Better low light. Another 24MP a77ii, IMHO, isn’t going to change any minds.
Any news on the RX100 MII successor? 😀
I got some bits yesterday. A hint there may be one soon. But I still need to get some confirmations about this…
thanks Admin: RX1 as well?
not yet.
🙁
need … more … info
Many are skeptical about an RX100 M3, but if you have info about a different RX model that’d be interesting too.
RX 1inch sensor with wide angle zoom 2.8. For travelling n street.
my question will be: 14FPS for how long? if it’s similar to A77 which buffers just 12 frames then slow down, it’s quite meaningless to take 14fps burst for just 1 second..
No it isn’t, it depends on what you are shooting.
you’re right, one of the big problems in my A77 its is buffer, its great to have 12fps, but what can i do if the burst its only 1 second long… even at 8fps you dont get much better (about 13 raws)… canon 7D its much better in this aspect, they can shoot about 24 raws in a 8fps burst!
My beef here is the operating system where everything locks up while emptying the buffer. But new Sony cameras have been showed that doesn’t lock up. So my hopes are high.
Well yes, you can’t, but in normal use, I don’t find it that bad. However 7D is more expensive, always was afaik. The price dropped now to 1200€, and the A77 costs under 800€. So you are comparing apples and oranges.
Of course, it would be *better* to have to shoot steady at 12fps, but even if not, it’s still perfectly usable.
I like the June availability.
14fps burst is completely fine, even on the A77, if you know how to work with it, really, it’s seriously useful. It’s just not “all that”.
the 12fps on the A77 only last for 1 second… that’s not very usefull, so i hope they really improve the buffer
I used the burst for several stop-action video sequences I’ve done. Not entirely useless, but it is a little bit of a gimmick
What would be even more useful is learning timing than spraying and praying 🙂
If it’s SLT it will be useless for birds in flight – you just can’t
follow the action. I’m going to keep my SLT for portraiture but will
use my Nikon for action. Before I get any hate answers I already use
both A99 with 70-400mm Mk2 and a Nikon D7100 with a 300mm f4 lens and
the Nikon works better.
Get a red dot sight, better than any viewfinder for serious BiF use.
Will have to look into this. Thanks.
I don’t think difficulty tracking moving subjects is a direct consequence of SLT, but rather the way it is implemented. The problem was that you were always viewing a slideshow of images that had been taken, rather than a continuous live view feed. I’m sure Sony can improve the implementation. There shouldn’t really be any technical reason why SLT should be inferior to OVF when it comes to tracking, as OVF cameras suffer from viewfinder blackout from the instant the reflex mirror is shifted, while SLTs only interrupt the view when the shutter is moved – the overall blackout time should be less.
a99 compared to d600 shows longer blackout during sensor readout than the Nikon mirror flip.
Yep, my point is that it doesn’t have to be that way.
Thanks, I know that from practical experience.
Hi David,
The A77 has a pretty tracking system when set up properly even though it’s not like the A6000. If you don’t mind I can send you the proper settings for that.
I have no problems with Continuous AF and Continuous shutter operation it is the blacking out of the EVF that is the problem and is longer on SLTs than OVFs. I’m lucky to get two good shots before I lose sight of the object. With the Nikon’s OVF I get as many as I want to and still keep my eye on the object.
The Red Dot sight might be a good idea.
Why don’t you just get a D800 and call it a day instead of fooling around with the wrong cameras? The Sony 24MP FF sensor isn’t Sony’s best effort so far and the D7100’s APS-C… if you’re sticking in the ~20MP range you might as well get a 5D III. That way you can have your cake and eat it too… not to mention the lens options available. The 300mm f/4L IS is a far more sensible option for that type of work than the Nikon one that you’re using. Also the excellent 70-200 2.8L IS II is $700 cheaper than the Sony one you’re using but comes with stabilisation too.
My use of Sony has a long history and the fact that I have many of their Minolta lenses has made me stay with them. However, I have looked at the D610 which in many respects is better than the 5D and will probably end up with one of them in the near future so I will not be jumping ship to Canon. I will also get the Nikon 300mm f4 VR when it hits the market but the speeds which I am shooting birds in flight means that it is unnecessary and I also own the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR. The Tamron 150-600 will also come my way once it is released for Nikon. Sony are innovators and it will be interesting to see where they go next.
If one goes with a brand for the sake of history or because of faith then they really shouldn’t complain.
What does minolta have that canon doesn’t? And have you thought what more would be possible with the unique and better lenses that Canon has over Nikon and Minolta/Sony? Image quality has come a long way since nikon’s 70-200 2.8 VR (and VR II).
I really can’t see why you think the budget bandage like the d610 is better than a proven camera like a 5D3. The lens choices alone should be enough of a justification for the 5D3… AF aside.
Also when is the 300/4 VR going to be released? Nikon users have been waiting for it for 17 years.
You go your way and I’ll go mine.
Is there a special event in may where this woulf be announced?
The fps is really unimportant. The A77 was already amazingly fast.
What we need from the MkII:
– more reliable autofocus
– better ISO performance
– global shutter
With the above, the A77 II will sell well, add video with 120fps for a short time and it will be amazing camera.
The only other things we need is LENSES for the A-mount. Any news on what we can expect? Will we finally see a new 400mm f4 as rumored before?
lol… Global shutter. I *highly* doubt that is going to come ;)…
Me neither, but it would def be sweet. 🙂
This camera will be very usefull for action such as birds in flight or sports with long lenses.
Tracking af therefore is important and therefore faster continuous frames are also quite important for those uses.
Yesss, exactly what I would want, but not for birds, but kids.
That’s what I’ll be buying it for. I reserve the full frame for everything else.
everything about the small company sony is a SMALL 😉
No new A/E mount lenses ? Is it a (bad) joke ?
It’s finaly a slt or a ML? I tink It s more important to know that…
Is the burst speed artificially limited? If not, presumably the real bottle necks will be processor performance, buffer size and bus speed. At the very least, processor and bus speed should be improved on the a77ii (assuming uhs ii), so an extra 2fps at 24mp makes sense. Anyone techy care to hazard a guess as to whether a 14fps burst mode is feasible with a 32mp sensor? Given the res is bumped up by 33%, it would suggest either some major upgrades under the hood, given the extra data) or a very short duration…
The processor will be new posibly bionz x
bionz x for sure 😉 and no bionz x2 yet.
Could have a 2 prosessors tho …….
No need to update beyond 24MP. It just needs a better buffer and af.
they better improve the ISO performance, and also back support existing A77 models with a better firmware!
I hope it will be without AA filter.
double slt mirror 😀
I think the a77 silhouette that has illustrated these a77ii rumours is interesting. It does not seem to have an internal flash, but it do features an orange band around the lens mount. Sony seems to have upgraded the design of the a77 to make it look more like an a99 🙂
Eh?
That pic is the original A77 – it clearly has a pop-up flash and that ring has always been there.
The above pic is A77 in every way…
That’s right. It is. I did not remember that orange ring. Thought it was introduced with the a99. My mistake. But the contour of the flash is very discrete on this picture…
Let’s just hope it has wifi and wireless remote control via android like all normal cameras these days including fuji samsung canon nikon pentax and sony nex. because sony alpha really lacks it!!!
