Sigma (again) pushes back the 18-35mm A-mount release.

A SAR reader got the following mail from Sigma when asking about the definitve 18-35mm f/1.8 lens release. This is Sigma’s answer:

Hello xxx,

No set date but it should be available for shipment by the end of February.
Yours Truly,

xxx xxx
Sigma Corporation of America

Bad news! Still, the lens can be preordered at Amazon (Click here) and BHphoto (Click here).

    1. Current Tamron 24-70 & 70-200 are much better than sigma offerings. Although, I expect sigma are cooking up some new items on that front!

    2. I believe the Tamron latest zooms are much better thank Sigma’s. However, Tamron don’t seem to be producing prime lenses (other than the 90mm macro, which is also excellent) – I’d love to see Tamron offer a 50mm, 35mm, 85mm, 135mm fast primes etc.

      1. What about the Tamron 60mm macro, that’s a prime and much much newer than the 90mm design.

        I’m still not trusting Sigma

        1. The new Tamron 90mm is newer than the 60mm.

What’s wrong with Sigma? Price/performance wise, sigma is probably currently making some of the finest lenses on the planet.

    3. Yes! I’m eager for their new 24-105/f4 for the A-mount, to replace my Sigma 24-70/2.8 EX DG HSM. It has been out for C & N for a while now, and previews on those mounts seem promising!

  1. With the significant drops in Sony’s market share of the DSLR/SLT market I can see why an A-mount lens is not Sigmas number one priority.

    1. Surely that’s all the more reason to? It’s only a different mount on an existing lens, and if Sony aren’t making one, then there are many Sony camera owners that will buy from Sigma/Tamron.

  2. I also contacted them, asking about if this lens would be offered in the NEX mount. I got a flat out “no” response. Sucks as it’s so great for the A3000, FS100, FS700, and all of the NEX bodies to date!!!!!!

    1. you can adapt it, but it will be even longer and heavier (its already 800g!!!). It’s too big and heavy for e-Mount, lets leave those bazookas to the DSLR world. Better buy the 20 2.8 pancake and the 35 1.8 primes

I can understand the simple “no”

    1. In all fairness, Sigma’s been pretty upfront about supporting the a-mount. It’s not the top priority but the majority of recent lenses have been released and they’re recommending a-mount adaptors for people using FE bodies.

  3. The sony sales figures for dslrs is a bit of a misnomer as they didnt really release much in 2013 on the slt front. I would expect this to jump up a bit this year if a79 and maybe 1 or 2 other slts are released early and prove to be great products. If so sigma wont abandon a mount.

  4. I remember them announcing a variant of their 70-200 f2.8 and it was over three years before one was available in the shops (and that wasn’t even the original but a later edition, if memory serves me correct).

Don’t hold your breath for this one…
