(SR5) QX Lens camera press release with spec list, video and images!

A Sony site unintentionally leaked the full Press release including images. The new QX100 and QX10 “lens-style cameras” will be announced tomorrow (September 4) at 16:00 London time (4pm). I will embed the livestream of the Sony presentation on this site. I will also include early reviews and preorder links. UPDATE: Sony asked me to remove the press release as it was posted by mistake by one of their sites. The video of the QX cameras is still public on youtube and I will keep it embedded as this isn’t my video or channel (Source is Mobilegeeks.de).

Interesting for “advanced” photographer: There is a good and a bad news:
The good news is that the QX100 costs $250 less than the Sony RX100MII (here at Amazon). And the QX100 has the same lens and sensor!
The bad news: The QX Lenscamera do not shoot RAW. It’s JPG only!

          1. Arggh!Sony baffles me. The whole point of the thing is to provide better image quality. Fine, don’t send RAW to the phone, but it’s got a card in it!

If you don’t care about image quality, wouldn’t you just stick with the smartphone, or at least the small QX? Why are camera companies so insistent that nobody wants both image quality and small size?!

          2. A perfect solution would be to store RAW in body and transfer a JPG copy to the phone.
No RAW is a deal breaker.

      1. That’s really stupid. I would have ordered one if it had RAW, and since it’s basically the same camera as RX100 II it has to be a software issue only 🙁

Oh well, I guess I can forget everything about this then …

        1. I’m sure a few developers in the Android forum will figure out a way to make it happen. If you don’t mind reading a bit it could be an easy hack.

      2. Damn it.. i’d have loved this thing with raw and would think about selling my rx100 I, but without raw it’s not even close 🙁
Maybe in this way it’s something for the girlfriend 😀

  1. The QX10 looks more reasonable both size and price wise.

Was thinking about trading my RX100 with th QX100, but boy what a silly idea it was

  2. So, does the fact this was leaked a day early mean that you’ll be sharing the remaining big news a day earlier, too? (wink) We SAR readers are a patient bunch, indeed…

  3. On video the Sony DSC – QX100 has 10x optical zoom but elsewhere it’s only 3.6x( f= 10.4-37.1 mm)
Is this a fake video or they just made marketing mistakes ;)?

    1. I think someone at sony used the copy&paste function too often. 🙂

I will buy this one, becuase video has 12 Megapixels. Thats more than 4K 🙂

        1. I was very interested in the QX100 for video, but not with those specs (and not for $500). I have an RX100, but really miss having a tilt screen, so the RX100 ii appears to be a better option when I don’t use my NEX-5R.

  4. why i did feel, it is looks like an action camera with larger sensor and better lens…. i could hang it anywhere…

i wish someone built more robust and waterproof case for QX10/100…. so i could also used it as action camera 😀

looking forward for the new action cam 😀

    wait…
*lens-sensor Camera Attached to a phone* remember one of the first camera phone? the SE T68i and T300?

  5. So its a camera for skinny weird nerds. Can’t identify with that Sony. Put a real man in the commercial please.

Lens says Carl Zeiss, not Zeiss as you’d kind of expect by now…

    1. lol not everyone is a fat bob but indeed most of nerds or geeks are skinny due to the fact they don t take time to eat and prefer to laze than work at office :p? OK i m off wiht my prejudices

    1. The processor isn’t fast enough to record RAW+JPG simultaneously as well as feed wi-fi video. So no, there won’t be a firmware update.

If you want RAW, buy a real camera, or better yet try film, that’s as RAW as it gets.

  6. The more I learn about the QX system the dumber it looks. And with no RAW capability that pretty much puts the last nail in the coffin for me.

    1. IT’s Sony, so don’t except open firmware or api 🙂 And if someone found a way to hack the phone, be sure that Sony will quickly release a new firmware to close the hole.

    1. 0:13 reminds you that it need “take it out”, “sync”, “wait till the lens stick out”, and attach it to your phone” before you can even take a picture

1:19 reminds you that there will be one more thing your “left on table and got taken away by someone”

2:04 reminds you that this gear doesn’t support flash.

  7. it makes a bit more sense when combined with that sony phone. still it does seem to be aimed at those wanting/needing to take pictures without being noticed.

but doesn’t it seem a bit large? or is that just me?

  8. No RAW !!!

Well, it’s to be hoped they have a better Jpeg engine than they put in the A65/77 otherwise they are in big trouble.

If the Jpeg engine IS better, then it’s also to be hoped that they issue it as a firmware update for the A65/77 ASAP.

  9. So it’s like 10 sec pairing/boot time before I can take the first shot. No, thanks 🙂 The video is kinda silly. It looks more like an action cam and is more useful that way. When attached to a smartphone just plain silly.

BTW who needs RAW/AVCHD on a smartphone? QX is meant for instant sharing. You won’t be able to edit/process RAW on a smartphone anyway – there’s no Lightroom. And even if there were, it won’t have enough processing power for RAW/AVCHD, not to mention that it would probably take 10 mins to transfer 1 image over Wi-Fi.

  10. Wow. I was planning on buying this thing if the software was reasonable open and didn’t suck. I have an RX100, but cell makes more sense for what I do.

Sadly, no RAW and no manual modes means no purchase.

  11. start up time: 6.9 seconds. shutter lag: QX100 .21 seconds, QX10 1.2 seconds. One. Point. Two. Seconds! Even if it had RAW, I’m out. Great idea with a horrible implementation. More and more I think the Nokia 1020 or expected 1028 will work best for me. Nikon, put your Aptina 1″ into an HTC to get Sony off their duff and do the same.

    1. Wow. That startup time is WAY too slow. And .2 sec shutter lag is already pushing it, but 1.2 SECONDS?! Why bother?! I could live without RAW for casual smartphone shots, but I absolutely can’t live with that kind of shutter lag.

Also, it looks like you have to tap NFC to pair, which will happen via WiFi, then launch PlayMemories. That seems too cumbersome. I’ve got the NEX 6 and just pairing/launching PlayMemories is NOT a fast endeavor. Granted there’s not NFC to help speed up the wifi pairing (I have to go into smartphone wifi and choose NEX6 network), but I was hoping they’d use NFC to streamline the process even further: Tap = unlock/wake phone + pair + launch app. Maybe in firmware?

I wonder how the viewfinder lag will be. That’s also not a pleasant experience on NEX 6 when using an android phone as the viewfinder.

I know I sound really pessimistic, but I’m actually hopeful that sony has minimized these issues enough to make it usable. This could be a really cool device…time will tell I guess.

  12. No RAW, no party! Sorry Sony, this is a no no from me, someone who would have bought it if it had recorded files in RAW..

  13. Does anyone know what is the lens which is pictured in focus (in the foreground) in the very last image of this post? Really curious what the lens is, it reminds me somewhat of my 500mm Reflex.

  14. Ever tried to edit RAW files on your smart phone or tablet? I have. Even with an iPad RAW is a massive resource hog that quickly eats up storage space. If I have to preview on my iPad I shoot RAW plus jpeg just to avoid using RAW. Not to mention the negative impact the RAW file size has on the user experience when it comes to transferring files by wifi. I suspect the jpeg restriction isn’t Sony trying to be mean as it is a case of them trying to optimize the devices for a range of cell phones and networks.

It would have been nice if they allowed the lens-camera to save a RAW version on the local card, but that introduces a level of complexity beyond what the average user is likely to put up with — or what Sony assumes they will put up with.

  15. Lets put it this way, its not made by Sony, but from other third party brand, what ever u like; its does have a 1″ sensor, 28mm f1.8 3×6 zoom lens, ois, jpeg only, 720p video, usd450, and it does nfc/wifi to fit all ios and Android phone…… Sounds better? Or plp are just comparing to rx100-2?

    1. You have to take into account that the QX100 is kind of huge. I don’t have any problems with the QX10, but for such size and for the weirdness of wearing such a big lens on my phone, I would expect the best. Especially because RAW support is basically free, if they took it out they only did it to protect the innocent and not add unnecessary hassles (and maybe to protect their RX100/2 sales).

  16. Is there really no RAW support for the QX100 ? I wanted to buy one, but no way without RAW. What was it so hard to shoot RAW + JPEG and only send the JPEG pictures to phone while keeping the RAW pictures on the lens-camera’s memory card ?

  17. What’s all this complaining about “no raw”! Come on people, it’s like if Ferrari announced a city-size toy car and you would complain about the absence of a V10. If you’re racetrack hugging, this isn’t for you, and you should look elsewhere instead of faking being offended.
If you’re raw hugging, this isn’t for you – wait for the next news. Not every food on the table is for you!

  18. Many of u guys failed to see the target audience of this mini camera… I believe it’s targeted to those who wan to have a better iq than their usual camera… And transferring of raw with wifi… Nahhh

    1. They don’t see the target audience because they are guys. When I see all the women here in Asia, in love with their smartphone, I can see a target audience. Or, if you want the girls attention, get one of them things.

  19. My ultimate wet dream would be for a future full frame sensor interchangeable lens version of this that pairs with Google Glass with focus peaking, so it could free up your hand, and deliver top of the line professional quality. I would sell my soul for that!

  20. actuality it make sense…. go everywhere even in concerts where dslr is not allowed even nex and digicams … BUT!! low light sensitivity without a backup light or xenon it may be more troublesome

    1. That makes no sense as a reason to delete it. According to that logic, the RX100 shouldn’t have raw, except that the article states that even when you shoot raw, lens correction is still applied as they redefine what “raw” is. So a lens corrected raw like in the RX100 is perfectly acceptable for this as well. To market something to enthusiasts and then castrate it like this is crazy.

  21. I really can’t understand all this talking and complaining about this camera…
It’s only a toy for techno nerds with a smartphone.
Even if it had a raw capability…we all know how a dslr or a dslt works. And we all know they r much better, as sony nex are.
    So buy a nex instead.

This is a toy. It shouldn’t be even posted or discussed in a serious photography gear like this, himo ; )

  22. Stop crying about it not having raw. Get a real camera if you want Raw. I bet half of you wouldnt even use raw to its highest potential anyway.

  23. RAW, is a HUGE feature for Serious Photogs. and the RAW + JPG save. My guess it’s because of the WiFi transfer of the file. They should have made the RAW save to SD on lens, and WIFI over to phone the JPG only. * Really, HOPE on the Z1 Honami the camera does RAW + JPG saves and has “real” Manual Controls to the camera. Including Flash comp, Exposure comp, Easy/fast ISO changes. Auto ISO maybe even with Min. Shutter (Oh, that’s not on the Alphas yet) :). Half Press shutter on the Z1 phone, like a camera.

    1. that would be brilliant marketing if they did give the Z1 better features for the QX’s.. means all of us would jump on the Z1 and throw our iphones away in a instant !.. i wonder if Sony would have the balls to do that though ?

  24. Sony: please vow to release a firmware update to add RAW output to the QX100 and I will gladly buy this magnificent toy to augment my NEX which I shoot and process purely in RAW.

  25. Sony had it with this product until they f*cked it up as always: No raw.

Damn, i really wanted to buy this, but no way jose, not if raw is not available 🙁

I really wanted my money to help Sony come out victorious in image segment 🙁

  26. I guess 95% of the market shoots RAW as JPG is good enough and lens distortion and CA etc already corrected. 0% would devolpe their RAW files on a Smartphone. Sony could offer it of course, but for these last 5%? I’m one of the 95%, but I feel like in a 5% minority here on SAR 😉

  27. lol typical sony fanboy lol
as soon as the product is out of the sony door…
“no X thing, no sale” “has X thing i dont want, no sale” “i wait until next version and only if they add X thing” lol
always finding an excuse to not buy the product, in reality, sony product its better than everything else in market or the only one in market, they are not buying it because they cant, because even if sony got a “perfect” product, they always came with “its overpriced” lol
as for me, im interested in those “toys”, and as always, i will decide buying it or not, only after i try it, as everything i had buyed in my life (yes, i tried my wife before buying it lol)… marketing, prewies and reviews its the same bullshit i dont care…
i may even buy one “toy” just to the help the system, hoping sony see a market there and expand, so maybe i finally get the the QX i really want, a 1inch fast prime (that should be slimmer and with better IQ)
    PD
im curious, if sony had put RAW (they dont because the small buffer/memory/procesor there) whats the thing all of you were bitching about… size, price, color? because i know you need to justify yourself to not buying it and not face the reality that you “cant” buy it, i even doubt the “pros” here, to be a pro you need to make money right? are you? cause im not a “pro” photographer and can buy it, by the way im a “pro” computer enginerer, IF all PROs here, work in what they love, cant understand why they dont want it badly, its like me not rushing to try the new thing netbook/tablet/smatphone/etc (new as in neverbeforeproduct, NO rushing for the new model) this QX are the NEW thing in the world you love (photography) the profesion you chose to expend your life time, hope you were smat enough to chose a work you enjoy, and you dont even go and try one, you already chose to turn away? its more revolutionary in photography than anything in this century and you dont care?
OH BOY how elated photographers are indeed.
why you read SAR? for me its like a crystall ball, a glimpse of the future, its my guide to my hoby/photography NOT to post bitching about everything

  28. Plenty of photogs don’t bother with RAW. If you can print to the same size and take good photos to begin with.. yes why bother unless one needs fashion shoot or art adjustment?

  29. No offense, but if you shoot jpeg these days when raw is available you are just clueless.. Why would not a photpgrapher want his images to look the best they can? Raw-editing is really simple. Qx100 -no raw -no buy.

    1. I use the RX100 daily.. the JPGs from this unit as pretty darn good – I barely find myself needing to use RAW for my daily street snaps, factory tours, hospital operation assignments etc..

I only really use RAW when I’m shooting weddings and professional studio assignments etc.. in those cases I will not be using the RX100, I’d be using my real camera ie: my Nikon D3’s etc..

and pre-judging from the looks of the barrel, my RX100 will still fit in my pocket better then the QX100 barrel. true no ?

  30. I assumed that considering this gadget had rx100 sensor and lens the lack of raw is how they differentiate the two products. I would think that it was competing against galaxy xoom new iphone nokias cameraphones and as yet unreleased onslaught of high(er) quality camera smartphone products. Rx100 is the pocketable camera with zoom that photo enthusiasts or even working photojournalists use.
This QX concept is a new concept that is hopefully going be tested by amainstream audience and if successful then it can be released with refinements to suit more advanced shooters. Maybe I’m way out of the ballpark and perhaps this product should be marketed at a99, eos1ds and d800 users looking for a reliable backup camera.

  31. not having RAW is not a deal breaker for me, I have a RX100 and absolutely love it for the video side… it’s so much better qual then the old 550d ML I was using for filming.. i do multicam talking heads with these two cameras and the difference in colour and white balance just makes editing a pita.

however the deal breaker for me is if the video modes don’t match the RX100, I was hoping to buy three of the QX100’s for my multicam video interview filming work I do. I cannot afford three new rx100’s however 🙁 and at these prices this QX100 would of been absolutely perfect B-cam’s for my self funded documentary on a new high-tech non-toxic cancer treatment over here in China, that will change the world for cancer treatments once word gets out.. ( I’ve been here in China since early 2012 .. Im from Aust .. and now broke! )

My RX100 only does 1080/50p so even 1080/25p would of been fine as thats what I have as my base… as long as it has the same colour science as the RX100 and same white balance values for easy setup it would of been great. Even in auto mode I can live with for mutlicam use… as long as it can record video straight for at least 29mins.

Does anyone know the battery life for video recording straight up ???

  32. What the hell happened to intellectuality around here? Who the hell ever expected an addon lens, using NFC or WiFi for transfer, to a damn CELLPHONE, to EVER support RAW?? Do you know what it would take for the phone to even render that thing? Phones like to brag about quadcore… but they are not laptops. They aren’t even netbook/ultrabook/googlebook… and neither are any of the tabs, Windows Mobile or otherwise. That kind of bandwidth and battery usage in the field makes zero sense.

Sony is more than aware that the VAST, VAST majority of cellphone photographers take thousands of pictures monthly. Facebook alone stores PETAbytes of data almost daily due to photo-imaging. Sony also knows that people are tired of finding out that their vaunted iPhone 5 or their Nokia Lumia 41mp of wasted surface area, can’t print an image to save their lives that, whoa, they’re only built to look amazing on screen. No these lenses are for people who don’t want to carry a camera unless they have to, and would much rather use their phone for instant sharing AS WELL AS POSSIBLY print later, knowing that their images will look 15x better, at minimum. The idea is revolutionary. The customers who’ve heard about it at our store are thrilled someone even thought of it.

Is it going to be spontaneous? Lord no! It’s WIFI for god’s sake. But it won’t be any slower than any other cellphone looking to snap the Instagram moment… and it’ll make their images actually have dimension, and texture that doesn’t include high levels of noise even in the best lighting.

Like ALL camera components, these lenses won’t be for everyone… but they will cell. Watch. And they’ll be the beginning of a different era in cellphone photography. The real cameraphones are coming… these are just the start.

So quit yapping about “only real photographers use RAW” (which is unmitigated bulls#!t). No. Real photographers use the tool at hand to create the best art they can and they don’t bitch about RAW or not RAW, they take the damn photo and tell the damn story, that’s what they do. I can turn it around: RAW is for sloppy photographers who never learned to control their camera settings properly, photographers who aren’t secure enough to turn around and hand off a file to a client knowing that the post-production and pre-press process for that client will be minimal because you killed it on site, live in the camera. RAW is for the weak.

Which of course is also bull. BUT not entirely. And we all know it.

The lenses are awesome. Nikon and Canon haven’t innovated in 5 years. Get over that fact and understand the good ideas are coming from new directions, Sony being one of them.

FYI: The EOS 70D is a beta test for the Canon masochists to try out and complain about until Canon finally gets it 3/4 correct in the 7D replacement… which won’t be finished until its 14th generation of firmware. But if you want to call that progress and innovation and moving the market forward in a “game-changing’ sort of way, then be my guest.

  33. They got to be kidding! No RAW?! What the…?!
This is an absolute deal breaker for me. Sure I don’t want to edit RAW files on the phone, but maybe later on my PC. And if I made a snapshot where exposure was not ideal, because I was in a hurry, RAW can save the photo.
I’d never pay 450 EUR for a camera that does not allow me to get the RAW. This is acceptable for a <300 EUR camera.
This gadget is definitely a tool for geeks and amateur photo enthusiasts. So please design the features alike. The normal smartphone user will never buy this camera as he's happy with the internal camera.
I'm an amateur photo enthusiast and I want full control over shutter speed, aperture and ISO, manual focus and RAW. I want at least a "S", "A" and "M" mode. Also something for low light (multiple exposure) would be nice.
Sony, if this rumor is correct, then I'm disappointed: No Raw 🙁

  34. Well, a good idea from Sony, but I don´t know how convenient this is. You have to carry a second device (like a normal camera), there is no Flash, it might be a bit fiddly to operate and if a call is coming in I don´t think it is comfortable to hold with the lens attached.
With that tiny sensored 10x zoom thing, if that is a good upgrade to the build in Smartphone camera, well than equally compacts are far of from being dead.

All in all a far better idea than this Powershot N thing…let´s see if it sells well.

  35. No offence to this fabulous and vibrant website, however, that promotional video by sony is one of THE worst promotional videos ive ever had the displeasure of wasting several minutes of my eyeballs on il never get back!!!
Please sony sack pr people and take it down ASAP, b4 too much damage is done with it.

I wouldnt buy this phone addon based on the exceptionally piss poor promo vid alone now, even if it was a semi “enthusiast” setup, which it sounds like it isnt, not having raw and other MAJOR shortcomings…..good 1 for doing that?

All that resource wasted on this gimmicky clumsy looking ergonomically pointless exercise, when it could have gone towards producing more real cameras sooner for us???

Such as rx1 with option for a zoom lens & built in vf, ff nex, apsc rx100, you know, LOGICAL PROGRESSIONS??
Yes, i know in the yr 2013, its a huge proposition to ask people to lug around the enourmous weight of a mob phone AND a camera god forbid, that might actually take up 2 pocket spaces instead of one, oooooh~what an inconvenience, not to mention the extra weight of a WHOLE CAMERA weighing at least a few hundred grams[there goes my lower back lol], i guess thats why they used the androgonous metrosexual stick figure geek dude to show it off right, ingenious!!!!!!!

Do they ever ask the market/consumer what they want i wonder.ps, i love some sony gear and own it too.so this aint a mindless hate on,

But this is a disgrace really. all that build up, pfffffff.
