      1. Never – ever. When the design is ugly.

I didn’t like the A900 design from the start, but it very soon grew on me, and, today, I love it. The A99 is a marvelous design, and I don’t mind saying so.

But the A7 – without being butt ugly – is certainly no beauty … and never will be.

      1. If you mean me, try with: Dimage 7Hi, Dynax 7D, A700, A900 and NEX-7. In film days, I actually used a Minolta X-700 – and an XG-M (still have both somewhere).

  1. I am very excited to be a photographer using
Sony. The future looks bright! Is it perfect???
No but, it’s a pretty good start and I feel comfortable
from where I stand. Show me the “alpha!!!”

  2. what happened to the rumored sony with shifting sensor to accomodate manual focus lenses of different brands ? ..

    1. I bet we’ll see IBIS and sensor shift AF in camcoder first…
I think us impressed byy IBiS benefits it would give to their video cameras.

      1. +1 agree. not sharp, terrible samples. I am getting a production model as soon as they become available and I will do a proper test comparing it to the D800E.

        1. Yeah man, please.

I would go as far as to suggest the man doing the photos either had too much coffee or he had a crew of people pogoing next to his tripod.

Appalling set of photos from the Photography Blog.

          Sony should complain.

          1. I must admit that it takes a wee bit extra discipline to get the best from the 34mp sensors.I have the D800/D700 , I wonder if perhaps the smaller lighter body is actually a disadvantage with regards to absolute sharpness when hand held.Obviously the camera has a lot less mass than a D800.Just an idea that or the journalists enjoyed too much hospitality at the Irish event

          2. Munroe,

Indeed, the smaller the body the harder it is to keep it stable at slow shutter speeds.
I had a similar issue with my NEX 7.

That being said, the shutter curtain on the 7 is probably not as ‘violent’ as the shutter in the a7r (I am thinking the sound has to tell us something about the probable vibration it produces.

For the RX1, however, I have little problems at 1/15 if the subject isnt moving and I am using the viewfinder to stabilise the shot.

          3. If I were Sony, I would complain too. The pictures look even less sharp than cell phone camera pics…and these were taken at low ISO too.

      1. All shots have different focus points, so yes, the photographer didn’t do a good job, but JPEG compression is just awful and that’s mostly camera’s fault.

        1. Randy, are you talking about the hair that was overexposed from the backdrop light? Every camera I’ve ever seen would expose this in the same way because the backdrop strobe is 1-2 stops brighter to give the blown out white backdrop. Any single strands of hair would render this way if the backdrop is too close to the subject because of the intense reflected light form the backdrop. This has nothing to do with the camera and everything to do with the studio setup and exposure settings.

    1. The Photographyblog images are pretty poor – can’t they even get two eyes in focus?? Regarding the blurry outdoor pics – maybe they’re trying to urge Sony to put in IBIS?

Take a look at the eprice hk ones, there are some pretty sharp indoor images there.

      http://timg.eprice.com.hk/hk/dc/img/2013-10/16/3951/alexchow_5_Sony-_158f02c585ec4934917e4ed09767362bori.JPG

It’s definitely sharp enough to see all the flaws in the make-up (patchy makeup on nose), and all the micro hairs on the girl’s face. And man that girl needs some sleep (raspberry ripple in the eyes) – poor thing!

  3. It remains to be seen. Some people say that the reason to why the D800 exmor sensor is so good at pulling shadows, is because Nikon added some of their own sauce to the sensor.

Even thogh the sensor in the A7R is a newer model, it might not be as good as the Nikon.

    1. The difference isn’t all in the sensor itself, though there is known difference in that Nikon uses lighter colored micro-lenses that accept more light, but have a less pure color response. There is a difference in support circuitry, heat dissipation and finally firmware, this leaves a lot of room for a competitor to create better looking files–even raw files–using the same sensor. And this isn’t the same sensor. It may be better.

  4. The jpg samples from A7r look awful, even the relative low iso looks like crap 🙁 . They should have work together with Olimpus and borrowed their jpg engine, this new processing is the worst I ever seen in any camera to date :(.

      1. The flower ISO test is awful because of the user, but slide the page down and look for outside pics. From ISO 50 until ISO 200 the images look OK, but after ISO 400-600 there are o lot of nasty artifacts present, they resemble a bad compact camera or cell phone.

  5. Uninspired shots in jpg at wild ISO settings don’t usually say a lot, i will wait for reviews from people like Steve Huff and other capable photographers that use cams in real world settings, not taking pics of test charts or other crap 😉

  6. I hate that you can’t download the pics. I wanted to see how well they edit. The pics look fine but I don’t think they really show what the camera can do and I hate the flower pics. Why do test shots always suck so much??

      1. I am pretty sure its all because of human error. I am not the best photographer in the world but I never could understand how people like this get to do the test instead of real photographers when these cameras are new.

  7. I’m starting to get worried as I have yet to find any good pictures taken with the 7r.

Where are the samples at showing the DR between the 7 and 7r?

    1. Agreed! I’m curious about the difference in DR, too. I read one review that said the A7 has image quality similar to A99, and the A7r is close to the d800e. So I used DXOmark to see how those two cameras compared against each other. the A99 has about 14 stops and the d800e has about 14.4. So, if that’s indicative of anything the DR difference will probably not be noticeable. I’ve downloaded raw files from each camera from online and the latitude of the raw between the two feels similar.

    2. Don’t worry. Early sample images from a new camera are generally rubbish. The firmware is not final, and the images tend to be hand-held JPGs taken under rushed conditions.

    3. The ones from Brian Smith look good. The higher ISO ones look bad. Maybe it was the lens, but even the outside ones at F11 look like a water color filter was applied.

  8. I liked those few a7 samples more than a7r…
I was convinced to get a7 in near near future but I’m beginning to fear it won’t work well with my 28mm elmarit…
    hence to short flange distance…
    hopefully I’m wrong.

  9. These sample images look worse than I had expected. On close up inspection, none are as good as what I am used to on a D800 yet. I was expecting details on an a7r would be as good as the D800 if not better. Well hope better sample images turn up soon as I also have a a7r on preorder.

      1. Thanks, I have seen these and the photos look awesome. Though they also seem to be heavily post processed. So for the pixel peeper example, there is no way to tell how much sharpening or contrast is done in PP vs RAW.

      2. Brian’s pictures are more about his photoshop skills than about the camera capabilities. Indeed so heavy is the post processing it could come from any m4/3 or apsc camera. There is nothing that tells us its from the Sony full frame.

Can’t believe Sony couldn’t find at least 3 or 4 photographers who could post some half decent pics to demonstrate the camera’s capabilities to match it’s historic launch. Some people are now undecided. Talk about killing your own market.

      1. I use the 85mm f/1.4 about 95% of the time with the D800.
And yes I agree completely the lens matters and plays a role in the final image IQ.

Anyway verdict is not out yet so still keeping my pre-order.

  10. I sure wish Google Translate worked better on the eprice site because this gets at the heart of why I’d choose the A7 over the A7R or even sticking with my Canon 6D:

A7 photosensitive element central region (about 1/3 of the area) are embedded 117 phase the focus, you can shoot moving subjects or when recording a slightly improved AF fluency, but the actual experience of it did not significantly slower A7R , still more than RX1, NEX-7 faster.

The A7 must be faster than the NEX 7, but I can’t tell from this snippet, which tells me it’s faster than the RX1 for sure, I guess.

  11. This is about the jpg engine. No realistic judgement until we have RAW evaluation. Neither was the weather good for IQ evaluation.

      1. I think it was an indoors event. Sony didn’t allow shooters to go out because they feared nobody would come back.

  12. Looks clean and sharp….unless you’re a pixel peeper…then, you’re never going to be really happy. These are big azz files.

I can see the RAW files will be much cleaner.

Yeah, the sample shots kinda suck, though.

  13. Settle down, settle down. None of these jpg photos should be used to judge the quality of final output. Raw is what we need. Until then, this is just a nice preview of the effect of Sony’s notoriously bad jpg engine on a D800e sensor.

DXOmark, wether you like them or not, will be the ultimate judge.

  14. Always the same when a new camera is introduced. Please wait till websites like imaging-resource or dpreview post their images where you really can compare same scenario’s.
The A7 image quality will be awesome, I have no doubt about it.

  15. Hello, don’t know if this has been asked yet but but will there be an upgrade to the RX1 soon? Possibly some of the features in the A7/A7r.
    Thanks

    1. i couldn’t see the org res images.. where do i go to check out the full sized org’s to give an option on them ?
all i see are web sized images, for which no one can give an opinion on since they are too small to see anything,

  16. A7R test shot: Use Sonnar T FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA shooting :
    this shot/lens is perfect.

and i do hope this is by a different lens, or something is wrong somewhere !

this lens that shot this absolutely bites the CA big time.. 🙁

look at the necklace and the white letters on the camera body. thats rotten!

      1. the lens looks super sharp to me, of course you can’t see that by looking at the eyes/lashes and the overall image, you have to look for it and I found perfect focus on the lower part of the chin and lower lip, now THAT area is crazy sharp lol

yeah, it can be tricky to shoot with highres sensors 🙂

    2. so what this is telling us is that the Sonnar T FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA has not been corrected for CA inside the firmware yet.. this hopefully is just a firmware issue that will be fixed before release.. firmware correcting CA errors is normal part of high end cameras so this is normal. i was freaking out there for a moment haha

  17. So far not impressed at all – even ISO200 images seem to have a lot of noise reduction applied to them smearing all the fine detail. My D800E and even my RicohGR produces cleaner and sharper output when using JPG (although I rarely used it).

Let’s wait for the RAW files but Sony have really not managed the PR post product launch very well if this is the best they can come up with so far.

Have not cancelled my A7r order yet but will do if more competent photographers produce similar results from RAW files.

      1. Much better but still hard to tell because of the small resolution images. Heavy PP seems to have taken place – which is not a bad thing – but the red channel is clipping evidently in a couple of shots.

  18. Do we know if these images is taken with cameras with final firmware?
Some websites has said the cameras they had was not final and that Sony had
not allowed them to post full size images yet.
Just asking, I know nothing 🙂

      1. I have seen that page before and very nice images.
Steve Huff (another good reviewer) wrote his Sony A7/A7r was not final or
not final firmware and Sony could not allow him to publish full size images yet.
Some reviewers does what Sony say, other just publish whatever…
So wait and see is my thought about this.

    1. looking at the EXIF show’s this to be the case of unfinished firmware.

      Equipment Make: SONY
      Camera Model: MODEL-NAME
      Camera Software: MODEL-NAME v0.90

      Equipment Make: SONY
      Camera Model: MODEL-NAME

    2. +1 agree. a good photographer under pressure to deliver something special. Too heavy handed with post processing. I have shot in similar subjects for clients in Africa and I know how it feels. However, the images are not very useful to evaluate camera/sensor performance.

  19. If anyone of you were referring to the outdoor shots from photographyblog, those artifacts are actually rain drops. Pretty impressive if you ask me! The A7r is probably the one most people will buy, the A7 samples seems mediocre so far.

  20. Guys, its the same story at every launch. The image quality will be awesome, I have no doubt. And if you are willing to spendd 3500 on the body+lens and shoot jpgs…then you really need to go back to the basics and buy aome books on photography.

    1. Stop peddling your site, weve all seen your pictures Brian Smith. Youve posted your link like 10 times in the comments. Stop spamming us.

      1. Lol. As much as I enjoyed reading the write up and pixel peeping at that one incredibly sharp shot, I agree that the spamming needs to stop.

    1. The risk for vignetting gets higher with shorter flange distance because of the high angle of incidence toward the corners. Sony apparently could not use the pixel optics designed for the D800 but had to alter it for the a7.
with a large sensor and a short flange distance maybe this is at good as it gets.

  21. Not the best samples to judge really – some underexposed images and a lot of ugly direct flash lighting.

In terms of pixel peeping detail and high ISO performance, I can’t really say without comparing side by side with other cameras but it looks pretty good.

Other aspects: skin tones look a bit yellow, contrast is way too high in some images, colour saturation is a bit too high. Some of the outdoor daylight shots were taken at unnecessarily high ISO and have lots of noise reduction artifacts. I think it’s just a case of poor photography and pre-production firmware. Hopefully we’ll get some better samples soon.

    1. In the U.S., you’ll only get one-year warranty with Sony. For a $2200 camera, it might be wise to purchase extra warranty.

  22. I like the feel of my a900. I’m not sure about these mini cam’s. Not to say I don’t like. In fact, I find this to be very sleek. I just don’t have a real need for it. The idea of owning the A7r and the new Otus 55 (If, say, they release it in e-mount) is really seductive.

I’ve seen the full video presentation and I’ve come to this conclusion. Unless your a real pro you won’t need what this offers. I don’t want the video, I don’t need 36MP and I rarely shoot low ISO. I’d have to sell a kidney to get what I want in this mount.

    1. ..and 55/1.8 even more so! It is promised to be as sharp as SEL5018 but on FF, which means ~1.5 times sharper in the print.

  23. it could be the jpegs I don’t know but these look soft with strong NR in almost all shots, why would you shoot high ISOs with such fast speeds???, the A7 images look much better and 24mp is more than enough for most people

  24. You can never have enough MP’s. Bring on the age of digital medium format quality for the masses. 36-48-60…it’s coming. We are about to surpass in a few years what film never was able to accomplish. A whole new crop of high resolution lenses are coming that will make your best lenses look like childs play. Are you ready?

    1. I’m not saying it’s worth the premium right now. Your talking to a guy that shoots an a900 and has some nice Zeiss. However, the future is about to open up never before seen possibilities.

I’v tried to step back from these new cameras and stop looking at hard data. In real use most people, even professionals, don’t need anything even close to what these cameras offer. But, the reality is we all want more. Much of photography is driven by that. The desire to cling to hardware that offers limitless possibilities- even if they’re never realized by most photographers.

      1. Yes I want more too , I want better AF better ISO performance better battery life, better many things but not more mps to me that is not always better, I have and used many bodies from Nikon/canon/Sony, you have to keep in mind the more mps you have the more you need to shoot faster which means higher ISOs that I don’t want to go to , 36mp will do fantastic for landscapes studio work on a tripod but not every one is doing that, to this day the older D3s has the best ISO performance and why? even though technology has moved on since then. There is a market for every thing not just mps

  25. @Admin Can you confirm if the A7 and A7r have electronic first shutter curtain? These feature is important for me and on other NEX cameras works very well
    Thank you!

  26. This might have been discussed but anyone notice the flash sync speed is different between the two?. A7 has 1/250 but A7R has 1/160 the A7R might be a dead end for strobist geek.. I probably will get A7 in this case…

    1. Kinda sucks that the A7 is better in several ways then the A7r. Flash sync, AF, electronic first shutter. I’d be more inclined to just buy the A7 and save some money, but I don’t like that it isn’t built with the same magnesium front plate and dials.

  27. I suspect some of the pictures are the sample of RX10. I think I looked at the similar picture on net for RX10 test.

  28. Reading through the comments here before actually seeing the photos, I was skeptical of the criticism, and wondered to myself: “How bad can they really be?”

Having now seen them, I apologize in advance for my lack of restraint:

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, but those photos are laughable. I get better results from my travel-cam Canon A95!

What a terrible “endorsement” for Sony, unless that is actually the best of which the camera is capable, which I doubt very much.

    1. I thought the same thing when I watched the unveiling video. The pics they were showing looked soft. I was like, really? I thought maybe it was the video. It looks like numerous people are agreeing with this. Soft pics man, soft pics. WTF?

    1. I think the question really is, how is it cropped in against the A99. Average sized pictures I bet no one could tell the difference.

  29. Where are the real out in the field iso tests? Who uses iso 3200,6400 or 12800 in a studio with shitloads of lights? I want to see how it performs out in the field when the light has gone :).

  30. I’m waiting for the big test, how the CV15 looks on both of these camera’s. Brian Smith’s tests were good with his distinct PP but other than that I haven’t seen many tests with legacy lens especially not wide angle lens for which there are no native lens for now.

  31. Seriously, if Sony makes A7000 with A7 Body and crop sensor and about 900-1000. I will definitely go for it.

I need a decent B role cam for my fs700!!!!

  32. Am I missing something? Those images are not only just snapshots, but they’re jpegs. I’m surprised so many think those images are good.

I have faith, though. Other than with the microlens positioning, I don’t see any reason to believe the sensor won’t deliver, and, when coupled to good lenses, this camera should shine. I remind myself that when I first downloaded Sony’s RAW converter for the at-the-time brand-new RX1, it had horrendous output, but once Lightroom supported it, everything was great.

So…is there still an embargo on the RAWs?

  33. I noticed this on an Australian website for the A7 and A7R “BONUS adaptor via redemption – Leaflet in box. Your choice of Canon EF Adaptor, Nikon G Adaptor, Leica M Adaptor, Sony A Mount Adaptor.” I wonder why it’s not being promoted more.

    1. Because it’s Sony. They can make a great camera, but they can’t market it for toffee (hope I used that idiom properly).

  34. 2 things.
1 Why are the asians obsessed with images of plastic toys. They all have a mono tone and show no colour toning grading or real contrast.

    Also 2.

Has any one found a manual yet. I can’t find one anywhere. All I see is ‘buy now’ black ‘buy now’ nice ‘buy now’ buy now’

I just can’t believe people will fork out a couple of thousand dollars without knowing what the buttons can be made to do, or not do.
It make a complete mockery of all aspects of photography except sensor size and “looks nice” may be valid but the reason for purchase?

    1. Jim,

      Both good questions!

The first one concerns the most used material.. 🙂

On the second, a Japanese friend elsewhere, requested and got a manual for the A7/r from Sony. From the tidbits he has been posting:

      1. A7r has a slow start up time. 2-3s.

      2. The A7 offers electronic first curtain shutter while the A7r does not!

      3. Battery charging via the camera takes ~280 minutes! (one is better off with the dedicated charger that old NEX users might have)

I am one of the crowd that has preordered the A7r, sight unseen. The A7r also turns out to be the most sold photo related item on Amazon.

    2. There are many people like that.

Worse, there are many who buy, for instance, condo units or houses BEFORE THEY ARE ACTUALLY BUILT. I have dealt with several cases of this phenomenon, where the property either didn’t get built, was not completed, or was not completed as agreed-upon.

A camera purchase involves much less risk, but I’m with you, I will not buy something like a camera sight unseen.

      1. Most people won’t need to adjust settings for every shot. I’d rather own a capable camera that I’m comfortable with despite a complicated menu system than one that’s easy to use but is crap.

And a camera is nothing like a condo. You always have the option to return it. And since it’s a hot item, better to buy first, think later.

        1. Internationality many consumer laws will allow return of a product that has failed or is not suitable for purpose. To go with this an item that has been sold once cannot be sold as a new item again. Very few allow return because its the wrong colour or you did not get to like it in the 15 minutes you gave yourself. Makes one wonder how new your new camera really is if return for any reason is possible. It would be absolutely impossible for all returns to be filtered through a referb process.
Unless you live in the USA where domestic camera sales are subsidised by the rest of the world. Thus allowing US bods to return a purchase when the buyer stuffed up.

  35. I was at the local store with 2 Sony reps today. I was holding the the A7 for a few minutes. initial impression
    1) Very compact and light in weight (I used to 5D II)
    2) The view finder is very good
    3) The shutter button is not where I wish. It is on the top panel and have to bend my figure to click it. May take some getting use to.
    4) The video button is hiding (purposely according to the reps)and not real what I want.
    5) Auto focus is very fast (with the new kit lens) for both video and photo

  36. A7R : “Continuous Shooting Speed :
    Continuous shooting: Max. 1.5fps,
Speed Priority Continuous shooting: Max. 4.0fps”

    A7:
    “Continuous shooting: Max. 2.5fps,
Speed Priority Continuous shooting: Max. 5.0fps”

It seems to me that Sony is trying to save from processor costs. or they are just trying to solve the buffer issue by reducing the shooting speed??

  37. The LA-EA 3 adapter in combination with Sigma lenses seems like the best way to go to have access to stabilized primes from day one.

That being said, I haven’t been able to find hard proof of Sigma’s lens stabilization working with the LA-EA 3 because until now it has only been a pack-in with that dumb Handycam.

    Does it or doesn’t it?

  38. From what I see until now, the dynamic range and general picture quality is nowhere near the RX1 and even A99. You could get that kind of image quality from cameras with a much smaller sensor.

    1. The posters of initial photos always present rubbish shots. Strange when one considers that these people were chosen for their photography skills to present the camera in its best light.
Or are they just the dealers staff playing? Demonstrating their depth of photography prior to going to sell the biggest obsolescent CaNikons to the US market.

    2. I agree that the image quality is mediocre, but the dynamic range? Come on. There is no way you can tell from jpegs.

  39. Let us try that again….

  40. Worse than anticipated, but the glass could cause a fail. Preorder is canceled. Looking forward high resolution images with Contax G 2/45 ond/or Summicron 2/50…

  41. I’m teaching math in Taiwan for a couple years. Lots of electronics have been significantly more expensive here, but these cameras are actually cheaper in Taiwan. The a7 is $1500, with lens is $1833, and the a7r is $2166. Lenses are the same price as US. That a7 with a $200 discount is looking awfully good.

    1. Damn, That is awesome for you. You can get a full frame with a lens and a flash for a little over 2,000 depending on what flash you get.

        1. That link is from link #2 on the original post. It has this title above the same picture A7R test shot: Use Sonnar T FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA shooting . if you move your mouse over it, it says it’s an A7/A7r test shot. Seems to indicate it’s an A7r shot.

      1. Nice picture! And according to the EXIF, it is indeed a picture taken with one of the newest cameras. Very detailed. Other pictures are just badly taken pictures, except for the ones taken by Brian Smith, these ones looked very nice.

  42. Seems to be a lot of overreaction going on here. A few pictures from the press release event and suddenly we have “the worst _____ I have ever seen”. These aren’t official reviews in controlled environments. Which is why in some pictures you can check the dirt in the woman’s pores and others look like they came from an iphone. Honestly, if you are suddenly claiming to drop a preorder over these initial pictures, you weren’t that serious on buying this camera in the first place. It doesn’t ship until Dec 1st. Pretty much all vendors let you cancel up to that point. So if you can’t wait for real reviews before making a decision, seems like this was an impulse buy or a case of trying to show you’re joining in on the fun.

    1. The shots I take are not on a controlled environment, so why am I gonna wait for shots taken o a tripod with controlled lights of fine patterend things the sensor has no trouble with?
These shots, taken in the real world witb real world light and surroundings are far more telling. And they look like sh*t

  43. Confusing whether to go for the A7 or the A7r. I also treat video equally important. From what I understand so far, if video is also to be a consideration then the model to pursue would be the A7.

    1. No interest in Nikon and the related bulk, size, and weight. Besides, Nikon OEMs their highend camera sensors from Sony. So, when you say Sony is contrasty and Nikon is not, is confusingly contradictory. The sensors in Nikon (at least the D800 / 36MP) IS a Sony sensor. FYI….

        1. By inference then, with regard to a ‘softness’ factor to which you refer, all things being equal (say, sensor for sensor) then the differentiating factor would be the quality and type of lens being used in conjunction with the camera (sensor) to create (or eliminate) the softness.

          1. Or it could be focusing not 100% there in the firmware, or the fact that the jpeg engine is not 100% there (and given its Sony, never will) and people are comparing Sony jpegs to Nikon RAW. I don’t think ‘all things are equal’ just yet 🙂

      1. Best sensor doeesn’t mean best camera. A sensor itself doesn’t make a camera exceptional.
Sony is a good sensor maker, but nikon is still better camera maker, espectially FF.
Plus, sony made sensors for nikon according to nikon’s specification sometimes.

        1. I am a Nikon shooter for many years , I think that better support electronics and processors exp[lain why, other companies have been able to get more form the same base sensors as SONY

  44. When i just asked on the sony website what resoltuion the A7R photos will be when using NEX (Aps-c) lenses, they replied with 16MP.
What i read elsewhere was only 10MP?

  45. It’s all down to bad focussing and camera shake, etc. as far as bad pictures. As far as them being too contrasty, that could well be down to in-camera jpg processing. You don’t buy a full frame camera with one of the best sensors available and expect to get the most from it handholding jps at on-the-edge shutter speeds, as such, these technically badly shot examples aren’t anything to go by. As far as I can tell by the one decent shot (link), mainly due to being f10 and flash lit, the sharpness and resolution etc. at base ISO is incredible.
