One A-mount camera coming in 2014 that will replace both A77 and A99 cameras?

Source: Dpreview

On top you can see an official Sony powerpoint presentation image that shows a “Hidden” new A-mount camera. It looks like Sony’s next A-mount camera will replace both, the current [shoplink 8461]Sony A77[/shoplink] and [shoplink 14165]Sony A99[/shoplink] cameras. I got a couple of info about that camera from SAR readers that attended the various Sony A7-A7r events. I am double checking the info with my sources. Will post some info about that camera soon! Rumor work never ends 🙂

P.S.: Thanks to all people that sent me info about the new A-mount camera!

UPDATE: It may not be causal: Sony A99 superkit deal is back at BHphoto (Click here).

    1. If you don’t like SLT you can buy an A7. Bring on the A88.

Sony is sticking to SLT because it works, and its only going to get better. The new sensors will probably be make up for the light loss from SLT tech (30% more sensitive). Plus the burst rates will likely be faster and longer too. I have a A77 (A99, A850) and am very impressed with SLT technology, its design is a couple of years old, and its still trouncing new camera models (at its price point of course). Sony will likely dominate the Full Frame market if it squeezes its 36mp FF sensor in an A77 sized form factor.

    1. Yea. For me it looks like low-end Full Frame. Definitely NOT a replacement for both A99 and A77.

@admin – No idea where from this theory came up. As far as I remember you posted a rumor about this yourself some time ago. That there will be a cheaper A-mount Full Frame comming in A99 to compete with Nikon D600 / Canon 6D.

      1. The A99 was a disappointment for me, because the fps it provides. I want a >8 fps camera. If not, I make a switch, and I DON’T WANT THAT!

I think Sony needs a BETTER FF camera than the excisting cameras (also from Canikon). A MUCH better one. Sony is able to do so! Look at the A7, Nex7, RX100 and RX1.

Go for it Sony, make the world drool! You Can Do!

          1. ‘So, you want a camera with > 8fps… did you buy D4 in the end?’

With all the G and Zeiss glass I use right now? No, not yet. But Sony must deliver or I will (and I really, really would hate that. Besides the money down the drain, I will miss using my Minolta glass.

I’m a longtime Minoltian. And changing into another system will break my heart.

Friends of mine use the D4 and it’s a heck of a camera. It sure is. It has all.

Give me that quality in A-mount. DSLT and EVF are ok for me, no problems there.

  1. If it replaces both then it has to be:

    a) Full frame

    b) In a similar price bracket to the A77

If b) isn’t possible, then it’s only really a replacement for the A99. A77 owners will demand a cheaper APS-C replacement.

    1. Moreover, a lot of A77 users will like their APS-C crops being 24mp. If the A77 replacement is full frame, then their long lenses become shorter. Yes, you can crop or use crop mode, but it won’t be 24mp anymore, unless, wait for it… Sony release a 58mp FF sensor! Damn, I just turned into Barry!

      1. They do not become shorter. That’s a misconception. 50mm is 50mm period, etc. FOV changes but focal length remains the same.

        1. “50mm is 50mm period.”

I’m perfectly aware of that. You’re being pedantic.

Effective focal length changes due to the altered field of view. Crop an A99 image to APS-C FOV. The resolution is approx. 10mp – much less than an A77. That was obviously the point I was trying to make.

          1. Thanks for the clarification. I didn’t intend to sound harsh. I’m with you on the 58MP sensor. That would be awesome!

          1. I know it sounds basic but you would be suprised how many people don’t know this. Many professional photography blogs and online resources still perpetuate this myth.

      2. I couldn’t agree more to your two posts Lotus.

If that camera doesn’t fullfill both those points, it should be added to the market, not replacing A77/A99.

        1. I think it’s not replacing anything. Admin just misinterpreted the poster (that’s one of these points where simply posting rumors instead of trying to make an interpretation would be much better)

    2. This true!!!

Especially those of us that use the A77 + 70-400mm combo heavily outdoors where its APC-C sensor shines. A 32mp A77 replacement, and a 36mp A99 replacement would be nice.

  2. Since the 36MP doesn’t have phase detection, the new alpha might get the 24MP sensor, so there is some room for an even more “professional” camera above… 😉

    1. Agree. The A99 goes away and a Flagship A1 mirrorless A-mount comes in with, 36MP, OSPDAF, CDAF, SSI(Steady Shot Inside) plus all A99’s bells $ whistles and then some…!

      1. +10000! 🙂 the term 5-axis comes to mind. Wonder what the deal is between Olympus and Sony on that issue.
Seeing that Sigma has already nailed the 35mm f/1.4 lens, I suppose Sony isn’t going to waste resources trying to replace the current old one.
I just wish Sony would replace the old Minolta/Sony 85mm f/1.4 with one with Nano coatings and SSM. Unless of course they’ve surrendered that item to Sigma as well.

        1. I have a feeling the five axis thing will have something to do with this camera replacing both the a77 AND a99 – the sensor will move when an APS-C lens is fitted… and possibly also when a NEX lens is fitted. See my post further down

  3. How about the Full frame E mount camera?
I remember you mentioned before about an advanced version of A7 that is going to be released next year. Please confirm after some much information “flood” during the launch. I think the most important questions are, are there a new FF E mount camera in 2014, and of there is any IBIS, PDAF of the E-M1 level (which can directly replace the SLT adapter), the sensor moving AF mechanism making MF lens possible to AF? What’s also important to me is dual card slot.
Anyway, if I know there will be no new FF E mount camera next year then I would buy A7r now. I guess many others could have the same question before they buy it (obviously we don’t want to buy a new one so soon again)
    Thanks for the great work!

    1. Kolen, I would say that the probability Sony would introduce new mirrorless FF cameras next year already, is VERY low.

Up to now the production cycles for FF cameras have been close to 4 years for all manufacturers. The fast moving electronics may reduce this somewhat, but not very much I would think.

Besides, Sony has stated that 2013 will be a NEX-year (E- and FE-mount), and 2014 will be an A-mount year (regarding bodies). Lenses for both mounts will come all the time.
      .

  4. I think we might get a 6D/D600 competitor while the A99 lives one. This makes sense given the state of things. Then, I think late next year or 2015 will be a new full line of mirrorless alphas. Maybe they don’t have the good stuff yet to release in alpha mount. This might be designed to hold consumers at bay until later on in the year or next year.

    1. “They push up the 7′s to FF”.

That’s what I’m thinking, and probably why the A7s are part of 7 series.

We might find that the 6 series covers a similar price bracket to the A77, and it will be a 6 series A-mount camera that becomes a genuine APS-C A77 successor.

This new camera that replaces the A99 AND A77 might be an A77 replacement by nothing more than its name.

  5. I’ll take it any day over those e-mount FF’s. I use some longer glass and love the feel of my A77 and the A99 in my hands. Bring on a 24MP FF under 1500.

  6. +1 to Kolen
    Admin can you answer ?
Will we see a new mirrors F E mount like the A7 but with IBIS 5-Axis in 2014 ? Or will it be only on nex..?

    1. Since they start rolling out all sorts of OSS lenses i highly doubt there will be any sort of IBIS in the e-mount system.

      1. I think the ideal would be to have both systems – the longer focal lengths can have their own in-lens stabilisation whilst the shorter focal length primes can do with IBIS. Best of both worlds and a very definite big one UP on the competition.

  7. That child from a99 & a77 would look nice – and eventually the cam that I would buy. depend on the gene sony is gibing the a79 or a97

  8. My biggest question about this slide is Translucent Mirror Technology and its placement on the slide at the bottom, nearest to ENTRY level A-Mount. Does this mean the high end A-Mounts are going mirrorless? I just don’t see the focus precision/performance of mirrorless as able to compete any time soon, but who knows.

Another interesting note is that the slide does not show the A3000 or where it fits.

I suspect Sony can easily create dual models A3000 and A3005 (one DSLR style, other smallest possible form factor) with most features identical.

Given that Sony’s numbering system is crazy, here is my best guess as to the future.

A3000 (already existing DSLR style e-mount. I suspect NEX-3N style is toast, replaced on the low end by the A3000.)
A5000 (former NEX-5 series, won’t change name until next revision next year)
A6000 (former NEX-6 series, with a replacement coming soon, probably this year)
    A7/A7r

Possible future A6 without permanent EVF.

    1. Maybe A3000 is sub-entry level. Good riddance.

And just to confuse the Sony owners and potential owners, maybe the new A-mount (a88?) will be shaped like a rangefinder style.

  9. I still think there is a great chance the translucent mirror has a place in Photography. I’ve said before there is a opportunity for Sony to revolutionize Filter Technology for Digital Camera Images. Built in Filters are very common in Video Cameras to reduce light from high brightness. Imagine A Ten stop ND filter built in, or a Graduated ND filter or any number ND filter. The Way I see it. You put on a ND filter on the outside part of the Lens of any camera and you lose AF function to some degree. If the Translucent mirror is first, then any other filter is next Behind the Translucent Mirror. You’ll still have AF because no light is filtered going to the AF Sensor.
These Ideas come from Vision of 8 the Infinite Idea Thinking Company.
Sony has the Right to use this Idea if they have not thought of it first. Just knowing it possible or my thoughts are the same are good enough for me. A Sponsorship would be great too. lol…Like free gear.

  10. a85 anyone? Since a99 prices are going down, I suspect a FF for the same price as a7. But I’m more concerned about the new lenses price… Geez has anyone seen the price of the recently announced SAL70200G2? The Canon 70-200 II has IS, is also weathersealed but sells for 300USD less.

  11. If the only reason to think that this camera will replace both the A77 and A99 is its placement on the presentation slide, I’d wait for more information. It makes sense that it isn the SLT section though and that it is only one camera – probably just a replacement for the A77, until the mirrorless A-mount cameras come (the A99 is too new).

  12. I am disappointed that there is no APSC a mount that will be semipro… There is a gap between a57 and a77. Looks like sony is not going to fill that gap. I am looking to buy an semi-pro a-mount next year by summer moving up from a57. Of course, I can live with wonderful a57 but I want better ergonomics.

  13. Based on the presentation, it states “Translucent Mirror Technology”..
Plus the new adapter for the A7 (which has OSPDAF) still uses a mirror (which not create a mirrorless adapter IF the OSPDAF can work well with A-mount lenses).
So I wonder if perhaps Sony isn’t ready to kill the mirror quite yet?

Now, is it really a replacement for the A77 AND A99? If so, I would hope for pricing along the lines of the A7 — Around $1500-$1700 for a body.

Still, I don’t read the presentation as a replacement for both. The diagram shows 3 “current” A-mounts plus 1 new A-mount. Currently, you have the A58/65/77/99 as active models. So I read the illustration as suggesting that the new camera will replace ONE of the current A-mounts. Most likely, replace the A77.

I can see the A77 upgrade being positioned between the current A77 and the A99 — That is, I can see it being a consumer fullframe camera. If you consider that with the A7/7R… Sony is now using “7s” as a designation for basic fullframe…. And if you consider the A7/7R to be the upgrade of the NEX7… Then it would make sense for the upgrade of the A77 to be full frame.

But sadly, that would mean by lovely Sony 16-50 2.8 lens would only be useful as a crop lens. I’m hoping I am wrong and that the Sony A77 upgrade remains APS-C.

    1. Admin posted a rumor saying that even after releasing mirrorless A-mount Sony still might release some SLT cameras. It’s not certain if they’ll decide to kill SLT completely.

      1. I seem to recall that rumor ended up being the “upgrade” of the A65 — the switch to the upgraded kit lens.
If indeed dSLT is not dead, I’m not sure if we should be celebrating or mourning. I’m excited about the prospect of the better ISO performance by dropping the mirror… but scared of losing the superior focusing abilities currently provided by dedicated PDAF. Perhaps an A77 upgrade will take from the A99 — a dedicated mirror based used in conjunction with sensor based assistance.

        1. Solution for that was posted since day 1 of A55 release:

          – Make mirror flip in the single shot mode (like it’s flipping in DSLRs) and keep it down in continuous shooting mode as well as video.

    2. “We realize that there were rumors out there about a successor to the NEX-7 and we hope we can help clear things up. The α7 and α7R Full Frame cameras represent a new level of performance for the E-mount system and are therefore not direct successors to NEX-7.”

  14. If anyone has been watching the internet, looks like A99 used sales have been going down the past week. Time for first year adopters to unload. Sony has to drop the price on that already over-priced thing very soon. You’d be crazy to buy one at full price now- crazy.

  15. An A8x FF SLT based on the newer A7 hardware (Bionz X) priced at under $2000, 24MP, 6 fps, 14bit RAW in all modes and hopefully with pop-up flash would be a nice choice.

An A99n with 36MP, Bionz X and a real FF AF sensor could be real D800 / 5D3 level and justify a $2800 price tag.

      1. Depends a bit on what the presentation was about, I guess.
Doesn’t even mean it’s not going to be discontinued soon.
But at least it shows no clear sign of them abandoning it.

  16. Despite what Sony says, I really see the E-mount taking over eventually. As of now, there are 4 choices (E-full, E-APSC, A-full, A-APSC) and that’s too many, even for Sony.

  17. What will Sony do with all of those A-mount lenses if they kill of the line. Seriously, what does it take to adapt these to e-mount?

There is still a TON of people out there using minolta, sony glass. There will always be money for cameras in this line-up. How can you introduce expensive glass like the 70-200 for 2900.00 and then drop the a-mount in a few years. What!!!

      1. Mathematically, you might be correct. Just remember that Sony does NOT make sense nor LOGIC decisions: marketing!

  18. Translucent Mirror Technology

Is written with large letters on the slide.
Does this mean that there will be more SLT cameras coming or what?

I have thought it to be strange if Sony would ditch that tech so soon. Before they do they need to have on sensor pdaf technology that is on par with separate AF-sensors, which I think Sony is far from at the moment.

Canon has in 70D showed that it is possible, but that doesn’t mean that Sony has a comparabe technology yet.

    /Mats

    1. Even the Canon 70D, as impressive as it is, does not replace traditional PDAF with on-sensor PDAF, because it’s not as fast. It’s a good solution for video capture, but that’s it. The technology is just not there yet. Sony probably realized that – I wouldn’t expect a mirrorless A-mount any time soon.

  19. Looks like the NEX-7 and A77 will be replaced by low end FF. Canikon also seem to be going in this direction with on replacement for the 7D or D300.

  20. Where is A3000?

And the graph seems to suggest that the lenses and the LA-EA adapter are something between A-mount and E-mount: C-mount? Funny picture.

But seriously, I won’t regard A7/A7r to be a successor to NEX 7. FF and APSC are different, the styles are different also. I do hope that there will be a true NEX 7 successor, with APSC sensor and tri navi.

  21. This is a bad joke. A really bad one.
Not only the rumored A1 A-mount Pro FF was skipped for 2013, now also for 2014.

Additionally still no successor for the Nex7 how ever it will be named I don’t care.

What are they thinking and drinking? I know from my Japanese colleagues that Sake could become dangerous to your brain, so I assume that Sony has a lot of bottles at the managements offices…

    1. I think name of A7 is related to Nex-77 and A77 not by technology (like APS-C sensor) but by target market segment. 7 is mainly for enthusiasts (with deep pockets). 9 is for pros. It could be there will not be NEX-7 replacement soon because they release other cameras at the moment which adress semi-pro segment.

  22. sony just loves to refresh there stuff like popcorn, but it’s understandable. I love my a99, but my next purchase is the rx1 cameras from here on out. No more big body cameras for me.

      1. Im waiting on an Rx1 refresh. i want less bulk with optional EVF (i like using tiltable lcd), i want whisper quiet operation and high flash sync (leaf), I want a ~stop faster and godlike iq lens (f2). RX1 definitely has its place in the lineup and will be first choice should it ever get refreshed. (im waiting on pdaf + tiltable lcd + wifi and i will buy an rx1)

  23. Just one A mount camera next year??? Have they changed the road map AGAIN???

Has everything been put on hold until the new sensor technology is ready late 2014/15 ???

  24. The following is not rumor, it is A-mount news translated from Swedish.
On the very serious fotosidan.se there was an interesting report from Sony’s presentation of the new a7 and other stuff. Link: http://www.fotosidan.se/cldoc/sony-a7-och-a7r-tva-fullformatare.htm
After writing about the news, the following section caught my interest:
    “Fler kameror på gång
På pressvisningen berättade Yoshiyuki Nogama att en videoinriktad systemkamera med A-fattning är på gång. Den ska konkurrera med Canon Eos 5D Mark III och kommer ha Ultra-HD-video (4K). Vi gissar att det är en vidareutveckling av Sony A99.
Sonychefen berättade också att Sony längre fram kommer med en riktigt snabb småbildskamera för actionfotografering.”

    Translated to English:
    “More cameras on the way
On the press meeting Yoshiyuki Nogama told us that a video-targeted system camera with A-mount is on the way/being developed. It shall compete with Canon EOS 5D Mk III and will have Ultra HD video (4K). We guess that this is a continuation of Sony a99. The Sony director also told us that further ahead Sony will launch a really fast full frame camera for action photography,”

    Sounds good to me 🙂

      1. Yes, he is aware. At least if the sharing function here works. I sent the same text to him first, then I copy-and-pasted it here.

  25. Sony seems to have pushed it’s base into different corners with all this Crop vs Full Frame and A-mount vs E-mount iterations. I like the new stuff, but feel left out in the cold.

  26. I like A-mount!

For A99 (new), 88, and VG system (NEX E-mount)

    I would like to

    . tropicalised body
    . 5-axis stabilization
    . removable screen (as a99)
    . Integrated neutral density filters
    . Wi-Fi
    . RAW 14bit (10 i/s)
. Safety Zones marker for video (TV, S35 mm etc …)
    . Peaking, zebra (like a7 & A7R)
    . Video 10 bit – 4:2:2 – 50 mb / s (minimum) XAVC??
. less moire and rolling shutter in video

    That’s a lot!

  27. With all this focus on full frame, is there any update on the horizon for mid/upper range APS-C E mount (NEX 6 and NEX 7) ?? Both are getting on a bit now.

  28. It will be a full frame with the ability to take an APS-C lens with minimal crop by moving the sensor. This may also allow it to use CaNikon lenses with simple converters. Given that it will probably be higher resolution than competing CaNikons (plus it will have 4k video) makes it a good camera for converting CaNikons to Sony. It will have a built-in dual mount for Alpha/NEX, so it will also suit ALL existing Alpha/NEX users.

No translucent mirror. The JPEG engine will be better than previous versions because Sony have access to the Oly patents and time to incorporate them. Not sure about the focusing mechanism – probably something new.

All totally inferred from previous SAR posts. Some of it may even be true.

    1. Sorry, missed an important sentence ending: ‘something new that uses the 5 axis Oly technology to incorporate sensor movement as part of the focusing mechanism (and this will be all of the focusing mechanism for CaNikon or manual focus lenses).’.

  29. Just 1-2 months ago, we were afraid of Sony ditching A-Mount line… Strange to see they are about to spin off all APS-C line, introducing one FF after another. It would be even more strange to see Sony entering into medium format space. Sony introduced lightest DSLR(T) (A99). Sony introduced smallest FF (RX1). Sony introduced smallest and lightest interchangeable lens FF camera(A7/7r). Wouldn’t it be great seing a MF camera?

  30. Am I correct in perceiving that this rumor contains nothing of which we weren’t already aware?

    Sony, show me the money.

  31. A camera can only either be a successor to the a77 or a successor to the a99. The a77 is a fast (fps) aps-c camera whereas the a99 is slower, full frame model that focuses on image quality (at the expense of focus speed and fps). There is certainly room for a camera between the two, a full frame successor to the a850 that fits into the price point between them.

  32. both the A99 and the A58 are too new and even sony cant be that dense to replace the A99 yet. will be a lower spec A65/77. in a year or 2 the A58 will become the A5000 and then the A9 will be born to replace the A99
A99 will hang on till AF speed gets better on mirorless

i think then you will see 2 A mount mirrorless for a while in the A65/77 spec and price range and the FF Amount

all others will morph into Emount (Amount with adapters)

      1. cool and i was not thinking A mount is dead i just thing that it will be pushed to the semi pro/pro level for larger glass
while a DSLR shaped emount(a3000) can be entry level but larger form and then have small e mount 3 5 7 and 9 all coudl use adaptors for big glass but are better match with smaller lens

  33. So ok it’s not a direct NEX-7 successor, it’s better. If it was directly, then it would be an APS-C sensor and a therefor a bit smaller and cheaper and not weather-sealed and, and, and. The a7 is the professional version of these dinky NEX cameras and sits a little higher in the photo than the yet unannounced A-mount.

  34. I’d like to see 2 models
24M SLT (8-12 fps) 1D/D4 kind of AF response
36M z-axis AF (5-6 fps) 5D3/D800 kind of AF response
    EVF and shutter lag
    <50ms altogether
    Flash Sync
    1/320 or above
    Battery Life
    500 shots+
    Video
    4K

  35. Looking at RX10, and I can’t help to think that it might be a good idea for Sony to release an entry level FF A-mount camera with the shape and size (in height) similar to RX10. 🙂

  36. this is dpreview, normally not so kind with sony and rumors not so credible. May be in 2014 can launch a new semipro aps-c without mirror in A-mount but with sss

  37. Is this why Sony hasn’t bothered to support the many A77 users it has with the long-rumoured October update to the software?

If this new camera comes with tethering and Sony do not update the A77 software … then they’re definitely lost me as a customer. I’m not paying out another GBP 1,200+ for another camera they won’t properly support.

  38. I am not sure what Sony’s next step will be but I think something is in the works for sure and soon. As of today, Nov 30/13, Sony Canada has the A99 priced at $2,299.99. It is not showing on sale but shows as regular price.
    http://store.sony.ca/alpha-a99-fullframe-dslr-camera-body-zid31-SLTA99V/cat-31-catid-All-Alpha-99-Cameras?_t=pfm%3Dcategory
Sony USA has the camera at $2799.99 (but will include a free grip). I don’t ever recall Sony Canada being lower than the US and particularly by $500.
