As you know Sony canceled the new product announcements in very last minute. Unlike Nikon that today announced the new Nikon D5100. I guess also that camera uses sensors produced in Sony Fabs in Japan. A wonder if the camera shipment will be deleted. You can see specs and preview at DPreview (Click here). Price and preorders at Amazon (Click here). It has the same price as the [shoplink 5509]Sony A580[/shoplink] and as the [shoplink 3617]Sony A55[/shoplink].

Sounds cool …. and well price through but for video purposes it still not able to kick against the Canon 600D which has more flexible manual control and fps choice.
Its serve for nikonian, still is everything and not VIDEO! hehe…
The Nikon D5100 has 1080 30P/25P/24P. Check the specs.
price of A850 or A580 ?
people complain about the lack of lenses of the sony system… in that case, why even bother about this camera…?
Will Canon ad here? Canon mount cameras Sony displays.
FInally, i knew this is Sony approach instead of claim crisis impact but actually is a approach to re-shape their product and K.O Nikon 😀 So clever, luv you so much! lol….
Althought the price and spec for D5100 are hardly resist, but I put hope on A77. Here i come this Oct 🙂 hehe…
Nikon may have received their shipment of sensors before the earthquake.
I do not know why you are waiting for the A77. After doing an A700 a200 photos as identical. So there were many followers!
Poor boy to enjoy more MP is have to wait A77 😀 lol…
This is ridiculous!!!!
we are now talking about a Nikon new camera announcement on a Sony forum !?
Is it good, is it bad, what sensor does it use, what features…well i don’t care right know as far as it isn’t related to the A or E mounts.
I wish I had any news from Sony….
I understand that Nikon will have their camera in stores this month.
What happened in Japan is a real tragedy. I feel sorry for them, for the lives lost after the earthquake, for all the suffering, for the danger represented by the nuclear power plant dissaster after the earthquake.
But as far as I can tell, Sony’s marketing strategy remains on an april 1st level.
we are concern rivals progress lol…
we are proud rivals used sony sensors lol…
cause it uses a 16.2 mp sony sensor, the sensor which sony planned to use in the Nex c3 and a35, which were both delayed. So it does interest us a whole lot, maybe the time the release it on the market will be the time sony releases those 2 cameras.
Exactly Myst. That is the interesting point. Nikon didn’t delay the product announcement! The question is: Is Sony giving Nikon a sort of exclusive shipment of sensors at the cost of Sonys products?
I wouldn’t mix up shippment/release and announcement. They are two different things with different logistics behind. Sony could have announced their new products without being able to produce them.
If Sony decided in the very last moment to cancel the announcemnet of all products, then this means that they have planned to announce as scheduled, sticked to that schedule even after the disaster in Japan, but then saw new difficulties. We don’t know of which nature these difficulties are. Perhaps the protagonists were affected by the disaster and didn’t recover in due time, perhaps they had difficulties to get the booth together, perhaps they are ethical reasons, perhaps…
There is a letter on the NAB HP which gives a peek into the problems the exihibtors from Japan are facing:
http://www.nabshow.com/2011/about/japan.asp
It talks about “concerns about your exhibit space” and “questions about your ability to attend the 2011 NAB Show”.
So, we shouldn’t speculate too much, why Nikon and not Sony….
I think Sony does it already. They aren’t developing a sensor for their own use alone.
Their sensor bussines is not entirely dependent on the camera bussines…I really don’t see how they could manage to produce the quantity that they are supposed to provide to Nikon and leave themselves uncovered.
There’s something else here, besides the sensor production capacity…maybe there’s something wrong in the camera assembly facilities. Something that causes a delay in providing the stores around the world with the final product.
Why on earth would they have discontinued cameras untill their succesors are ready!?
They did so with the a700 and got a lot of negative feedback. Sure, you have the quake problem to blaim now….but still, why rush to discontinue something which there is still consistend demand for!?
So you’re still using that spamming popup-producing link shortener?
OMG apha rumors is forced to talk about Nikon
No in-body stabilization?
No in-body AF motor?
Innovation?
Nikon badge? Oh yeah, I’ll take two for myself and one for each family member and friends!!!
If there’s no in-body AF motor, there’s no way it can objectively fight the A55/A580 and win.
D5100 (The Mist)
D800s (Triple.H)
600D/60D (Edge)
5dMarkVI (The Rock)
A77 (John Cena)
Nex7 (stone Cold)
A99 (Undertaker)
lol….
The d5100 is the alpha’s a580 direct competitor, a55 doesn’t have a competitor just yet, cause it’s catered to a different demographic.
I would give the edge to the 580/55 over the 5100. Having said that, at least Nikon offers a range between their entry level and their pro bodies! After the 5100 you get the D7000 (an excellent body for the price), the D300s and the FF D700. I know the D300s and the 700 are getting long in the tooth but at least you can still buy them new. Sony stops at 580/55 and doesn’t start again until a900/850 and it’s been that way for a long long time…long before the recent tragedies in Japan. Nikon doesn’t have an issue overlapping the retirement of one body with release of its replacement and they offer a good range from entry level to FF pro bodies.
I own Sony equipment and have been patiently waiting for years for an a700 replacement so I can upgrade my entry level body. I will probably continue to wait, but Nikon do produce a quality product and for the range/options in camera bodies alone I have certainly been tempted. The biggest thing holding me back is the IQ from the Nikon 80-400VR can’t touch the Sony 70-400 SAL.
Things like GPS, 3 exp. HDR (only 2 on Nikon as far as I can tell), in-body image stabilization, screw drive, EVF, built-in wireless flash, faster autofocus for video put a55 way out in front. The only plus I can see with the D5100 is the 24fps and possibly better noise handling in higher ISO or at least the ability to turn off NR if you want. Oh, and better battery life. That’s not enough to sell me on the D5100 if it’s the same price.
Seriously guy, why is everyone complaining so much?
This site only makes 1-2 updates per day.. it’s not like it’s such a huge inconvenience to see something which doesn’t directly concern sony alpha cameras.
Would you rather have days and day between alpha rumours, or articles like this (still relevant and interesting discussion) to fill the gaps?
i tested the body, soooo far from a d7k, its like useless chipped off from D7k, i wouldnt buy it even its quarter of D7k price. (would consider if its a fraction of the price :P)
A580 felt more solid then the D5100 anyway. only nikon badge collector would buy this. nikon is just trying to fill the pricing gap to compete with A55/A580 pricing.
sony’s multi frame NR prove to be better then any nikon single frame NR~
I think this website is quite relevant to the tittle. I guess just a post of Nikon D5100 doesn’t spend a lot of your precious time to read, right?
by the way… i don’t see D5100 is a good deal as they still didn’t put screw drive in this model that makes some of the nikon lens doesn’t fully functioning.
