NEX-FS700 now shoots 4K with the external HXR-IFR5 unit.

NEX-FS700 Camcorder 4K Update from Sony Professional USA on Vimeo.

That is likely the only bigger A or E-mount related news of the NAB show: The Sony NEX_FS700 E-mount camcorder can shoot 4K with the new external HXRIFR5 unit. Anyway, don’t worry, regular A and E mount rumors are coming soon on SAR and Hasslebald and Zeiss should announce their E-mount stuff soon too!

More info about the 4K news at Blog Sony, Engadget.

    1. Thanks for sharing – and you are absolutely right!
Why all people here expect news about photography on a broadcast show.

And that “full-frame” cam seen there may not be capable of photography at all, in the end.

      What a Hype!

    1. Agreed Rob. I have been told that several camera announcements were canceled or delayed because of the Blackmagic 4K. Makes sense! Hang tight. The Blackmagic 4K announcement was a blessing for all of us camera whores. 🙂

      1. I doubt anything was canceled by anyone. These cameras takes years to develop, and putting them in production takes millions of dollars. It’s impossible that anyone would cancel something that they have been producing in large manufacturing factoring within one day of notice. And the shelves in NAB were setup at least a week before the show started.

If anyone has been telling you something was magically canceled within a day because some other company announced something on the same day is outright idiot.

        1. An “outright idiot”? I doubt it. These types of camera don’t always require the lengths of time and capital investment you talk about. Not everyone is a “Sony.” And it’s quite conceivable that if there another small camera producer (sourcing much of the parts, like Blackmagic) had a similarly spec’d camera but at a slightly higher price, that’d warrant a step back to re-run NPV figures or look at a short delay to add minor features. The alternative would be to look like an “outright idiot,” as you say, and release a camera with the same specifications for slightly more.

  1. I spoke with Juan Martinez (the man in the video) yesterday at the show. (He certainly was not very friendly) I asked him about a future Sony A/E hybrid mount. He gave me a very dirty look and seemed a bit stunned that I asked him that. He asked where I heard that…I told him SARs and he paused for about 5 seconds and said “no comment” and walked away.

It was a very awkward moment.

    1. His division doesn’t use the “make believe” slogan… where reps smile like the devil say “Yes, in the next FU”.

His division has a different slogan, “beyond definition”, where reps scorn and walk away, insulted that you didn’t read the sign.

    2. Juan Martinez is always at NAB, and he is NEVER friendly… maybe if you are buying $1M+ in broadcast cams a year… but indie film maker, not so much. He will only talk about what he knows, and if he doesn’t know what you want to know, he gets surly and moves off to someone who isn’t asking difficult questions.

    3. That’s some great sleuthing. Well done!! Sounds like a tacit acknowledgement that a hybrid A/E is indeed what they’re working toward.

  2. Others at Sony are fantastic.

Andy Muniz is wonderfull…very very friendly and truly enjoys talking to people and teaching.

Joe Schmizi is brilliant and absolutely razor sharp. If you want debate sensor oversampling and how it affects debayering combined with the resolition artifacts of the Nyquist frequency….he is your man. And he is very funny too.

Its really just Juan that is like that

    1. Not really. It certainly steals some thunder, and for the money i would probably go with BMCC–if I wasn’t limited to the silly EF mount. However, the FS700 offers amazing frame rates even at 4K RAW something that BMCC 4K can’t do probably because they opted for a simpler/cheaper processing pipeline. No problem there, just more options. It does mean that Sony is going to risk losing the low-end 4K business they probably expected to get with the FS700.

The biggest innovation of the BMCC in my opinion? Recording straight to SSD in camera. However, the fact that the mini cam works with high-end SD cards makes me even more bitter that Sony is still holding out on putting XAVC 4:2:2 on its SD-card cams. 4:2:2 ProRes is plenty for the style of shooting I do.

    2. The Blackmagic Production Camera only shoots 24/25p, and not up to 240p (or, when lowering the resolution, even up to 960p) like the FS700. And the form factor of the FS700 is much better. Still, for many people Blackmagic Design makes the best valued 4k camera to date.

    3. All I hear (Like 95% of the people looking in the $4,000-$7,000 range) is 4K for 4K. Yes, the Sony has many options that the BMCC does not have. But the big motivator that the BMCC has is 4K for 4K.

  3. The problem is
I would love the little 16mm cinema cam even thought about per ordering it. I know people who still haven’t received there original EF mount order. Is the mft cam shipping yet. There’s is no way we will c other of these cams by expected (b&h) release date. If BMD’s production were anywhere near up to par more cams would be on the market and maybe they’d be smoothing out market prices over all but it’s not. I personally like and would love to get a hold of one of there cams for actual price. They have really just made those fools on eBay ($4500 dollars for a 3 grad cam) money. 2 days ago before announcement 3-4 cams for sell, now 2-3 pages of cams for sell.

    Last thought
I was super into their 4k thunderbolt rack mount unit, was supposed to originally be available Nov 1st
It slipped to jan 2013 then April now it just say pre order no dates listed like the MFT version of cam.
I can’t pre order something that the company that made might make obsolete before I even receive the previous model.
    I wanna like it but….

  4. I don’t understand what market the Black Magic 4K fills. Who cares about 4K and doesn’t care about the size of the sensor? Is the sensor somehow spectacular relative to its size?

    1. The market for the BMCC is based on the price point/features give or take a few hundred/features. So that means the VG-30/900, Nikon 800, Canon 5D M3, Panasonic AF100A, FS100 market to name a few.

“Who cares about 4K?” The same people that want the newest thing or something of good value. It is rare that one can get both…like they can in the BMCC4K.

Many people in the industry that I talk to, do not want to shoot 4K with a camera that has an oxygen tank attached to it. They also do not want to shoot 4K and have to use proprietary media like one does that is using the FS700. Maybe the Odyssey7Q monitor / recorder saved the FS700 from an impending 4K death. Will see.

  5. How often does one really need ultra-high frame rates at 4k? We’re not all shooting Planet Earth. Plus the additional recorder adds size, bulk, complexity.

On the other hand, 15 stops DR and better lowlight than the Blackmagic Production Camera mean that the FS700’s image will be noticeably better in sub-optimal lighting, which is a much more common scenario for the average indie filmmaker.

This camera is one for the indies to rent, I’d say. The Production Camera is one to own.

    1. I wouldn’t consider 50/60fps ultra high framerates. And even 120fps would hardly qualify as ultra high in an age where slow motion becomes more and more popular.

  6. Juan refered his internal fs700 buffered codec as XAVC. for us, as big as 4K, could any one ask at NAB if this was a slip of the new firmware? Sony stated they’re going to unify new models with this XAVC

    1. The FS700 just received a price reduction of a $1,000. The body only sells for $7,499.00. (Thanks Blackmagic!) The oxygen tank sells for around $2,000.

      1. WTF? last year when FS700 was released the price was $7999 MSRP. I am sure it has been down to 7,499 several times in the past year and that price fluctuation has nothing to do with black magic.

      2. And I expect the prices to keep falling, especially due to F5 on top that will squeeze it down as F5 prices go down with time.

That’s normal fluctuation for electronic devices these days and it has nothing to do with black magic

        1. Ok. I will let you think you know what you are talking about. But, I no for a fact that it is directly related to the BM 4K camera. Carry on.

          1. I have seen FS700 for less than 7,499 (brand new on ebay) for the last 6 months many times, so you are FACTUALLY wrong.

If what you know contradict with known facts don’t bother your belief, that’s pretty sad then.

          2. Oh my god. You are taking me on in a price war using ebay as your reference? Thats very shallow of you! I need not say another word.

          3. Brand new on ebay, yes, I am. You also don’t seem to be remember that FS700 was launched at $7999 last year. Your $500 drop is not only insignificant but this has happened various times in the last one year.

    1. DuraVidsual, please explain yourself? Based on what I said, how can I be a juvenile? Everything I mentioned above is fact.
