I hear it’s pretty good. Thumbs up for Nissin.
Phew! Sony needed a decent flash in the system.
Got mine a few days ago, haven’t had a chance to really test it though. The controls take some getting used to, especially if you used to have a Metz with touch screen interface. Ah well if it performs well, I think I won’t mind in the long term.
That’s nice, but I am still waiting for a decent Sony flash system Phottix Odin is perpetually backorderd – and not converted over to the ISO mount requiring an adapter if you could get the system. Nissin is handicapped out the gate by design with the lack of a receiver beyond oversight. Zero ability to bring other speedlights, including other Nissins, and strobes that you may already own into the system. About the only way you could is if used optical triggering, assuming there were no other photographers in the area using flask. Looks OK if satisfied ONLY using several Di700A speedlights and an Air Commander. I consider Nissin’s corporate promise of “receivers in the future” as rather hollow, first, because engineering and introducing as an initial set is a no-brainer, but also, Canon and Nikon models have been on the market for 6 months and that promised receiver still doesn’t exist.
I just set mine up a few hours ago. It seems to work fine, but the build feels pretty cheap. I do like the high-speed sync mode. No shutter banding all the way up to 1/8000th. Part of the shoe on the wireless commander broke off right away. Oh well. Be sure to remember to ask B&H to send the rebate form, as they forgot with my order.
Or just print the rebate off yourself: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/FrameWork/Rebates_Promos/093015_NISS_063015.pdf
Good tip.
It works fine. I am going to order another flash when available. Nice system for a nice price. I have the 600RT for canon which is definitely more elaborate and better build but the options for canon are significantly more than Sony. But this is why a great many people appreciate Sony’s technical advancements but as of yet has not put together a mature camera system. Nikon and canon are light years (pun intended) ahead of Sony with regards to third party any in house flash systems.
Could anyone tell me if the AF assist light works from this flash.
I’ve heard everyone said this flash is great but silent when asked. Tks
Yes as far as i can tell it works. At least the the infrared light turns on when focusing. Is there another way to determine its function?
Mount flash directly on the camera and turn both to ON. Now try to focus in low or dim lighting to see if AF assist turns on (from the flash not from camera) to focus.
I’ve never seen any flash IR light work on the A7 cameras. Even the native Sony flashes. Any reason to think this flash would work?
That’s the reason I asked. All Sony’s flashes were designed before the A7xxx debuted. Their genius must have left something out. I would hope lastest flash designs are able to fix that.
I just copped a 43AM on eBay for my a65 and am quite impressed with Sony’s offering – expect the newer ones are a bit better but this older model does everything I need it to. What is it specifically that those who dislike Sony’s unit find they lack? The pivoting head is the best idea I’ve seen in any flash.
These third party models always seem so much cheaper in build and reliability – can’t see dropping $300+ when the Sony’s are just a bit more…
Ughhh!… When will these companies learn?
The transmitter uses AAA but flash uses AA…
Attention flash Gods! We don’t like carrying different types of batteries! We hate it!
Attention flash Designers! Use your brains and realize that we don’t care about a transmitter that’s a tiny tiny tiny bit smaller because you used AAA batteries. Make it a little bigger so we can carry one set of batts.
________
Nissin really missed an opportunity to improve on the flash foot. It’s not even a foot… just four plastic toes. User below reports one already broke off. Meanwhile CaNikon gets full metal sleds with locking pins.
________
Phottix Odin uses AA’s for both transmitter and receiver. And receivers can be repurposed for any flash, strobe, speedlight, studio light. Works great on RX10II and a7RII… except the MIS adapter doesn’t lock… Thanks Sony… Thanks for ruining our flash system.
Radio triggering of course
About the MI foot, we should blame on Sony’s “Fstupid” design. I don’t think anybody could redesign or improve upon with all metal foot due to multiple interface connections.
That’s right! With that much connections, Sony’s own top of the line HVL-F60M flash is NOT even fully compatible. How smart is that?
Fortunately the Multi-Interface shoe isn’t about “Flash,” its about “Audio.”
