Massive price drop in US: Sony 16mm pancake for $149! And NEX-7 discount too…

[shoplink 13807 ebay][/shoplink]

As I told you a couple of days ago Sony UK marked the 16mm pancake NEX lens as “previous model”. And now you can have the lens with an impressive $100 price drop on [shoplink 13807 ebay]Big Value on eBay (Click here)[/shoplink]. But I have to admit that I haven’t heard of any possible new version of the lens. Doesn’t mean that it is not coming…

More deals: There is also a $100 discount on the NEX-7 at [shoplink 13808 ebay]Arphoto[/shoplink] and a $50 discount on Amazon. And don’t forget that twelve Zeiss for NEX are finally in Stock for the normal price via Samys on Amazon (Click here).

  1. those ebay seller form Korea has them listed for $170-180 for a while…with free shipping.

thou, $150 is still cheaper, but can’t find shipping to Canada

  2. I continue to be mystified about Sony and lenses
We hear rumors about new 50/f1.4 and maybe even a 50/1.2 and one of them could even be Zeiss would be announced with the a99 and about Six months ago a rumor was posted that the 70-400 was being replaced and the very next day a rumor came out saying that a new 70-200/f2.8 would also be out soon……………I’ve even read talk of a Zeiss 70-200/f2.8 but nothing ever happens.
Please tell me that Sony does have new fast full frame lenses like a 50/f1.4 Zeiss in the pipeline that will ship soon.

    1. Hi Steve!

I wrote on SAR a couple of months ago that some A-mount lens release has been delayed. Sony has not the production capacity to release all lenses now and they will give the priority to NEX lenses first. I may rewrite a new article to be sure everybody get this.

  3. I got the 16mm pancake with a deal, $100 when I bought the 5N kit, from BHPhoto. I think that is a good price for this lens. $150 can still be ok, considering you can turn it into an ok UWA or FE. (I got the wide converted for $69 from Amazon probably due to price glitch!)

On a more general point, recently I got surprised to read Konica Minolta is still in lens business (m43rumors). Actually when you check out their website, you see they are doing some ‘replacement lenses’ for SLRs!

    http://www.konicaminolta.com/opt/products/reflex/index.html

Do you recognize those lenses in the picture? 🙂

I wonder what kind of deal they had with Sony. Did Sony buy exclusive rights to their Lens IP? Did they take over the manufacturing facilities? Maybe they are still doing business on the manufacturing side and some lenses are still being produced by KM…

    1. Trippy! That looks like a 35 1.4 with a newer body design, an 85 1.4, and two cheaper lenses (75-300 and 18-70?). I wonder what the deal is. Is this just a page KM forgot to update?

  4. Off topic, but:
Have you guys read Steve Huff’s post on Google+?

“Sony just left my house with a slew of new products, and no, they have not all leaked. One item in particular left with my drool all over it. It was amazing and will be the hit of the show. Can’t say what it is but can say you will want one just as much as I do. Again, this is not something that has been leaked or even hinted at. Will take you by surprise. This will be Sony’s year at Photokina.”

  5. You have to wonder why anyone will pay the new price for Sony lenses when they are basically worthless in a year. I’m beginning to think Sony quality and products are a wast of time. My Canon lenses are worth more than I paid for them in almost all cases. Starting to sell everything accept the Sigma lenses.

  6. I like this lens, great fun as a walk around or indoors. Very small so it’s never bad, just not “pro” as in you wouldn’t make prints with it. But I’ve had some fun with it, $150 is a good price

  7. If Amazon rankings are any indication, Sony has done incredibly well with the the Nex system. The DSLRs seem to fare worse against the competition, but when you’re going up against Nikon and Canon I guess that’s to be expected. Anyway, I wonder if Nex outsells their DSLRs. The Nex cameras and lenses have to be far more profitable.

  8. The whole pancake thing is nice, but I think the vast majority of users would be much better off using a Sigma 17-50 OS HSM f2.8 with the LA-EA2 (giving you a constant f 3.5). The only downside of this approach is the noise from autofocusing, but if you are using a wireless mic the problem is nonexistent. I think it would be a wise move for Sony to publicly acknowledge the ability of Sigma’s 70-200 OS HSM 2.8. A lot of their lenses are only available in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mount (the 120-300 OS HSM 2.8 for example). Imagine how awesome it would be if they could offer the latter lens in Sony mount. Plus you can find it new on Ebay for around 2,399.00.

  9. I got the 16/2.8 used for about 100 USD, and I think it’s brilliant for action snapshots of my 1.5-year-old. I mostly have it paired with my NEX-5, which I also got used for around 100 USD – a very nice, pocketable combination that wouldn’t hurt my wallet too much if I dropped it in the ocean or something. Very nice to bring to the beach or in other situations where I don’t feel comfortable taking my NEX-7.

  10. Title says there is a $100 discount on the NEX-7 but links to a ?gray market? item being sold on eBay. I don’t see anything official about a $100 discount.

  11. I will be somewhat unhappy if 16/2.8 is replaced with 16-50/3.5-5.6. I was hoping for somewhat like 16/2.4 with good optical performance. Still, you can’t have everything.

  12. I feel really sorry as the 16/2.8 + fish eye is the most accessible fish open on the market. As a matter of fact nex-5 with 16 mm and fish adapter could often be found cheaper then a single dedicated fish lens.

It is really disappointing to see a fine versatile tool like the 16 go due to few pundits that barely understand how to use it

Here is few photos from yesterday, some of the, with the 16 + fish combination

    https://picasaweb.google.com/108932183055258509379/September82012

Check out also the amazin work at project strato sphere all shot with the much hated 16mm. This kinda proves the 16 can be used for high paid high quality pro work unlike any other

    http://www.stratos-sphere.com/

Now Sony need wide lens replacement to cover the gap of 16 and also 12mm using the wide adapter. I am sure the 10-18 will do great. I also hope they release some fine yet accessible fish eye lens.

  13. Yeah, this isn’t a “discount from Sony”. For a while, eBay sellers have been selling the 16mm cheaper than MSRP.

And the 16mm isn’t as bad as some people go on about. It does have it’s odd quirks, but it’s very usable. For best results, shoot RAW (I like RAW+JPEG) and remove CA during post-processing on the computer.
