  1. I have already come to terms with the cost of the RX1, and will be buying one. Regarding the accessories, I cannot believe what Sony plans to charge. The EVF alone is putting this camera to $3400. Sigh…

    1. So you’re ok with paying $3000 for a camera, but not ok with paying an extra $400 for an OPTIONAL EVF? How does that work? Do you use old clothing to clean your new Mercedes?

  2. The RX1 price seems high at first glance… But if you add up what it would cost to get a FF DSLR with a 35mm ƒ/2 lens, it’s actually a bargain. And that doesn’t even take into account how much smaller the RX1 is.

For people who shoot primarily with a 35mm on FF (there are many of us), this is essentially the perfect digital camera.

      1. It’s the economy of scale at work here.
RX1 is expected to be sold at much smaller sales volume than NEX cameras; and its accessories even less so. The manufacturing cost of such a small run would be a lot higher than mass volume products.
And they probably want a higher profit margin for such a premium products anyways.

        1. To each his own. I’d consider paying $3k for the camera (with EVF). I think that price is totally worth it. I just can’t stomach a $180 lens hood but I guess I’m a little too frugal.

Either way my next camera will be my main camera so I think I’m going to hold out until the NEX-9. It won’t be as small and sexy but I can use all my lenses on it for that 30% of the time that a 35mm lens won’t do.

Please let us know what you think of the camera when you get it. It looks incredible!

          1. You can blame the X100 for the “seperate lens hood” madness. Though not bundling it does make me a little queasy.

      2. It makes sense to me… Despite the high price, the RX1 is not a high margin product. They may only be breaking even on it. Think about it—it’s essentially the same price as a FF DSLR body, but DSLRs sell better and don’t have high quality lenses built-in.

So they’re trying to make their profit on the accessories.

          1. With all due respect, I don’t think you have a grasp on manufacturing costs. Sony is an aggressive company, and they’re up against two vastly more popular rivals (Canon and Nikon). Knowing this, they priced the A99 at $2800, which is very competitive. If they could have made it $2400, they would have, in a second. The margin on the A99 is tiny, because they need this thing to pull people away from their rivals. But if the A99 sells well, they’ll make it up in volume, and in lens/accessory sales.

At the same time, they release the RX1 at the same price. The RX1 doesn’t have an expensive mirror reflex viewing system, but it has a high-spec lens with three aspherical elements. So in terms of manufacturing cost, it’s probably about the same as the A99, a product which we KNOW has a tiny margin. Yet the volume for the RX1 (and thus the profits) will be much lower.

I would bet any amount of money that they make more money from the EVF than they do from the camera itself. Honestly, I’m amazed they even made the RX1, and I think they should be applauded.

  3. “The NEX-6 compact system camera will be available this November in a kit with the SELP1650 power zoom lens for about $1,000”

    Excellent Xmas Present
$1000 for both NEX6 and the new Power Zoom Pancake!

  4. Thanks. Does the RX1 come with a back and a screen on it (hitherto no picture of it) or are these options you are supposed to buy on top of the xamera itself?

    1. hahaha….in an effort to bring user customization to a whole new level, the RX1 will ship unfinished…allowing the user to place the buttons wherever they please.

Seriously though, I too am eager to see a photo of the back of this camera.

    1. Thanks! I am actually suprised that Photographic Central had the chance to post the news earlier than others. Or may there is a mistake.

  5. compared to a77 (and others alphas): sony redesigned the body around the grip, look how the frame bottom support the grip. In previous alphas, the grip sometimes comes loose.

  6. Seems that the AF is the same as the A77, with the addition of the102 sensor mounted AF cells. It will be interesting to see this in action.

  7. Sony RX1…..”A Smart Teleconverter function crops a central portion of the image sensor, boosting effective magnification by 1.4x or 2x realizing an effective 49mm or 70mm focal length.”. What exactly does this mean?

    1. It means that a smart teleconverter function crops a central portion of the image sensor, boosting effective magnification by 1.4x or 2x realizing an effective 49mm or 70mm focal length. Exactly. 🙂

    2. in other words if you push that button camera pretends to have a smaller sensor which leaves out sides/edges of the “picture”. and so, with the image sides/edges left out, lens becomes a “less wide angle” one.

    3. It crops the image for you, giving you a smaller effective sensor and longer effective telephoto length. It’s that simple…no easier way to explain it.

  8. Interesting. The a99 has a 19 pt traditional PDAF system PLUS a separate 102 pt. system on sensor. That differs from the rumor a bit. Also, the limited 6fps burst rate in full resolution.

But on the plus side, it looks like tethering is back!

Both the a99 and NEX-6 are on my must-buy list now.

    1. Yeah, seems a bit of a fail to make a camera with the same resolution as the A77 but half the frame rate. I’d expect that from the 36mp model.

I missed the bit about tethering, but that’s good that they didn’t screw that up.

And let’s hope the flash adapter isn’t unwieldy.

No matter, I’ll wait for the A88 and get more for less. Let’s hope they are smart and put a monster flash on it like the 800si. 🙂

      1. Same pixel count + 50% greater surface area does NOT equal “same resolution.” 6fps is still faster than either the D800 or 5DMkIII. Apples to apples, please.

        1. Not spatially but AFAIK it does electronically. I really thought that was one reason why Sony was sticking to 24Mpx. Get the kinks worked out with the A77 and NEX-7. Same data path just better data from bigger photosites. I was never going to buy the A99 but I am a little surprised by the low burst rate.

        2. As Joel said, electronically it’s the same data. Granted the shutter is bigger, so that may limit the frame rate. But the buffer should have been bigger. If this is the “pro” sports camera, it won’t compete with a small buffer.

  9. Just ordered my a99 at the Sony store in the US. Says ship date of 11/2/2012. Funny the accessories seem to be shipping on 10/19/2012 (flash and grip)

  10. The prices for the NEX lenses seem reasonable. The NEX-6 with 16-50 Powerzoom for $1k is a great price. This kit will be back ordered for a while

  11. Glad the “pros” didn’t get their hooks into the RX-1 as well. Then they’d have TWO $2800 FF cameras without flashes.

I guess only idiots will buy the RX-1 now, since it has that useless feature, huh?

  12. I think I’m in for the A99 but that sample file from the RX1 is really good! Still, I just can’t see $3600 bucks (fully configured) with the EVF and lens hood. Anything less wouldn’t make any sense to me. Boy, this is going to be a real mind-f until the fairy dust settles.

  13. TETHERING……

Can everyone now shut up about tethering? This is from the Sony web site under “Features”:

    PC Remote Camera Control:
Enables users to remotely change various camera settings, switch still/ movie shooting on or off, and automatically transfer still images to enhance the efficiency of the studio photo shooting workflow.

    1. This lens looks pretty amazing. I’m now using the Lumix 7-14mm for m43, but this lens seems to be having the same focal length, and is cheaper, stabilized, does fit filters and even is lighter? Will not make a switch yet, but Sony is becoming a better option for the future.

    1. Correction…Use the links on AlphaCameraDeals 🙂
      Thanks!

JUst a note: Many links are not affiliated. But it doens’t matter. Buy where you feel it suites better for you!

  14. Thank you, Andrea.

Does the vg900 have steady shot inside? If the alpha lens don’t have stabilization wouldn’t the a99 be the better choice for video at the tele level?

        1. butj you said at the tele level. but I think a camera of this level (which if very good general use across a wide spectrum would have it

          1. I’m sorry for not being clear. I meant with a telephoto or zoom lens. Thanks for responding. Here’s to Sony & us.

            Cheers!

  15. REMEMBER IF YOU BUY USE ANDREAS LINKS. Reward is work. check out the specs with everyone links but come back to the links by Andreas to buy

  16. Uuuum, on the US site it clearly says:

    “Model Features: 24.3MP 35mm full-frame sensor, …… , up to 25600 ISO …”
and then just two paragraphs down the page it says:

“Capture it all with the 24.3MP effective 35mm full-frame sensor, 14-bit RAW output and a normal sensor range of ISO 100–32000”

So what is it, 25600 or 32000? And how can they make such an obvious typo on a product launch which has been in the works for months if not years? I manage a quality assurance department and this kind of errors are unacceptable.

    Here is the link: http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&searchType=search&storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&productId=8198552921666485827#additionalImage1”

It also says “Available on or about 11/02/2012.” No mention of 2013, as someone suggested earlier.

      1. Why? My Aptus 22 is 2x the size again and is ISO 25 native…with MORE DR. Granted, the sensor technology is different, but aren’t the physics the same?

  17. The NEX-6 kit, with powerzoom for $999. This camera will be the best selling NEX camera. Wow! I hope it works well (camera and lens). Can’t wait to get one.

  18. DPreview states the iso as “ISO Auto, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200 (6400 with boost)”. Are they wrong, am I reading that wrong? Also they also report no GPS. They are wrong, right?

    1. Looks like they did a bad cut and paste job from another camera on their spec sheet – loads of inaccuracies there (including ISO range and supposed lack of GPS).

    2. In their rush to do a review of the a99, they did a very sloppy job. Among other errors they say that it does not have GPS and that it takes Compact Flash memory.

  19. NEX-6, all other NEX are now irrelevant.

    STANDARD HOT SHOE
    BUILT IN VIEWFINDER
    PHASE DETECT FOCUS
    MODE DIAL
    EXTRA FUNCTION BUTTON AND WHEEL
    BUILT IN FLASH

    Thank you Sony.

      1. NEX7 keeps an edge on pixel count and more important NEX6 lacks mic in 🙁 They put great video mode, but miss one important thing.

    1. Exactly…

All that’s left is to keep this body and shove a full frame sensor in it, weather seal it, and you’re done. Game over.

Slap a fast quality lens on it, at least f/2, and you could even sell this kit for double the price… I’d still be first in line to buy, along with a trove-full of others. The others companies would not be able to compete.

Please do this soon, Sony… and don’t self-hinder it’s capabilities in the hopes of saving your other products. Let it be all it could be, and you will win this mirrorless game. For sure.

  20. I will probably be called a troll, but I’m extremely underwhelmed. I don’t care much about the fps, but the same af as a77 is weak. I know it has the 102 on sensor, but who’s to say if they will be selectable. They will also most likely suck in low light and low contrast situations. I owned the a77 and the af was lackluster. For that reason and the constantly overheating 58am flash. I sold and bought a 5d3. I always wondered if I would wish I stayed with Sony when the 99 came out. After today, I no longer have that worry. Call me a troll if you want, I really wanted to stay with Sony, their sensor tech is superior to canon, but I need usability and performance to go along with that. 11 cross and no double cross does not cut it.

      1. Doubtful. I’m sure it’s a fine camera and takes great pictures, but for my needs, it’s unacceptable. Keep in mind that I’m only speaking of the AF. The fact that it apparently uses the exact same AF as the a77 is pretty weak. It doesn’t work great in low light, and it is made for an aps-c sensor. That means that all of the AF points are clustered in the middle of the frame, making it impossible to focus on the rule of thirds lines unless you focus then recompose, which in a non-posed situation, it’s often hard to do.

    1. Yes, you have said all of this before. Goodbye, there is no need for you to return here and beat your dead horse once again.

    1. The guy has a point, a77 misses focus indoors, basically goes into center spot mode, a850/900 same story. It is frustrating to say the least. I’ve outgrown Sony equipment, and I have their most expensive glass and flashes. A99 With 102 focus points in the center totally let me down. Sony boasts of its new AF module but shows no images or videos of it in action. The ones shown are dead in THE CENTER!!!

      1. So I guess that means the A99 is just what you’re looking for because of the extraordinary fast and accurate focus.

    1. And if you calculate the cost of the camera+evf+hood will only cost you around $4000

Cheaper than Leica M for sure 😉

  21. What? A99 has ONLY up to 6 FPS with AF? I thought one of the advantage of SLT is to have high frame rate, this advantage is gone now? And it doesn’t mention about the buffer.

And I still hope the AF tracking is much improve. But now, Canon has the same on sensor AF technology. I don’t see an edge on SLT over traditional SLR now …

BTW, how much is the A99 body alone? all the preorder link no longer work.

  22. All the launch videos are from Sony Australia’s YouTube account. I find it ironic that you can’t even pre-order the NEX-5R from the Sony store in Sydney…

  23. B&H reports there is a built in flash. I believe they are wrong. Also a bit disappointed in the 99’s selectable focus points. They seemed to be cluttered in the center without any along the thirds or further out. Still getting but I thought there would be a better arrangement of selectable focus points. I am not quite clear on the iso range as well.

    1. Yeah, I was just wondering the same thing. I wanted to see if I could pick up a decent lens cheaper. I already have a 24-70Z and 20-200G. I almost feel like ordering the body only because I cannot imagine needing the kit lens.

    2. Exactly, I can’t understand this part as well. All the focus points are in the center? even the 19 “traditional” points are in the center. But the Phoblographer say it can do face detection AF outside of those points .. but you can’t choose those focus points …

    1. Why is everyone so keen on gazillion focus points, unless you shoot sports photos on tele etc?
The only focus point I use is the center one. I focus on what I want in DMF mode and then select my frame. Otherwise you let your camera guess what you want?!

  24. Is there a way to pre order the Sony NEX 6 in Germany? I do not yet see that option available in amazon.de

Not even the Camera dealer in my area has any listing on the NEX 6. To me the NEX-6 looks like a hit. I hope that the pictures live up to the expectations.

  25. “Sony also announced a FF 50mm f/1.4 Zeiss Planar for Spring 2013! Source: Sony Japan.”

wait, are there will two zeiss FF lense will announce? zeiss 50mm/1.2 SSM and 50mm f/1.4 Zeiss Planar? or just one zeiss?

      1. i hope there will be more zeiss like 50mm/1.2 SSM too 😀 that would be very nice

good job admin, about RX1 are this camera can use wide/tele angle lens conventer? 😀 I’m so curious about this 😀 thx

  26. I already pre-ordered the NEX 6, lets hope Sony ships early like they used to do all the time prior to the awful disasters last year.

What a good day for Sony. They listened to so much feedback, its like 3 whole new divisions (NEX, ALPHA, CYBERSHOT) to me.

Quicknavi is back on the NEX6 and A99 and RX1, bravo. 3 compact lenses for NEX, bravo. This is what a lot of critics wanted Sony to do years ago, this kind of aggressive go for it kind of announcement.

    Bravo Sony, Bravo.

    Carl Garrard

  27. Looks like the mysterious 52.5mm f/1.8 is the E-Mount 35mm f/1.8. Probably a typo. 35mm * 1.5 crop = 52.5mm 135 equivalent. Even says in the description in the link

  28. Admin,
If Nex-6 has been enabled with touch screen? Can I touch focus object on the screen?

It’s kind of confused from dereview (not mention it’s a touch screen) and SonyStore (it just mentioned in its features not in specification).

    It’s important for me! Thanks.

    N.Y.

      1. Hello,
However from SONY Nex-6 official website (http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666488065#features), it is featured,
        “Advanced Control Dial
Mode control dial and Quick Navi assure quick an intuitive operation comparable to DSLR cameras Control dial, Fn (function) button and touch screen (including touch shutter function) combine to greatly facilitate operation and speed getting the shot.”

        If I misunderstand it?

        Thanks.

        N.Y.

        1. I hope not. I hope Nex-6 has touch screen enabled, which is helpful for quick focus during stills shooting and video recording, as Panacsonic GH2/GH3.

          Can anybody confirm it?

          Thanks.

          N.Y.

  29. Cannot wait to see some images from the 99. I am a bit disappointed on the focus selectable points. They appear a bit anemic. It seems that Sony dropped the ball on that one. Will order in the morning. It seems like a beast of a camera.

    1. Apparently it’s the exact same af as a77, which is designed to cover an aps-c sensor. The af points don’t even make it to the rule of thirds by the look of it. All of that innovation and they were too lazy to design a new af for a 35mm sensor.

  30. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out since the release of the Nex-5R (and now with the Nex-6) whether they have a clean (no overlay) or even uncompressed (God forbid!) HDMI output, for external recording. Anybody?

    1. Sorry, but I did not see any flashes pop up. It only showed the hotshoe, which has a panel in front of it behind the microphones, but this does not mean there is a flash underneath it…

  31. Did anyone else notice that you can switch the a99 from PAL to NTSC recording in the same cam? 60p/50p/25p/24p are all available options from the menus – it’s no longer region-specific.

  32. A big disappointment (relative to predictions): No touch on LCD
    A small disappointment: plastic body
A nice surprise: price, especially $1000 with the power zoom.

Too bad … I’d happily pay extra $100-$150 for a better built and more usable product.

Also dpreview mentions a new 28-85 F2.8 FF A-mount zoom. If the price/weight is right that could a great kit lens. I wonder why there are no further details so far.

      Thanks.

      N.Y.

  33. The VG900 is an E-mount fullframe videocamera, right?
I noticed that Sony didn’t release an E-mount fullframe lens today.
It supplies an adapter for A-mount lenses instead. That’s such a shame.

At least the evidences point to a fullframe NEX in the (near?) future.

  34. While all the leaks were fun an all, i wasn’t expecting anything major. but damn. This is the single most exciting product launch i’ve seen from Sony – or any maker at all. The NEX-6 looks amazing, the a99 is just awesome, the rx1 is one heck of a compact .. and while i loathe pancakes for everything it is worth – i’m excited to see how the new performs compared to the old kit lens.

    1. Well $2, tax free, free shipping, and a great return policy from Amazon. It’s much cheaper than buying it from anywhere else.

  35. I truly hope that nobody will buy the A99, but most people are too stupid to understand that nothing like this will change their skills in photography (I’m not referring to pro’s that need a camera for their work). A camera like this must not exceed the 2200 U.S. dollars (tax included, prices in U.S B&H, Adorama, Amazon ecc ecc are allways with out tax, so at the end you must add about 8% plus.
This will be a good lessons for all industries, example like Canon that sells their new 24~70 f 2.8 at a astronomic price.
Sigma costumers succeded in that making the “old” Sigma SD1 with that ridiculous hi price a complete market failure, giving now the same camera at 1/4 of the original price.
So now if some will comment against my post the reason can possibly are only 2, first you are a rich idiot gadgets freek , second you are paid from those companies. Once again I’m not referring to professional photographers, to them I must suggest that Sony does not have at all a good “chain of repair stores” in most country. Pros need their camera repair soon as a week and not to be send to another country to be repair.

    1. I just realized looking at the spec. that the A99 doesn’t have 10fts as Sony rumors keep saying for more than one year and neither a built in flash. 2 more reason to not buy the overpriced A99 specially with “only” 6fts. The lack of 10fts is the most important one, fundamental for many pros.

  36. A99 buffer size:

    1. Just realize looking at the spec. that the A99 doesn’t have 10fts as Sony rumors keep saying for more than one year and neither a built in flash. 2 more reason to not buy the overpriced A99 specially with “only” 6fts. The lack of 10fts is the most important one, fundamental for many pros.

  37. Faaaaaaak!!!!! 🙁

Here’s a caveat: At the initial stage, not all lenses will support the focal plane phase-detection AF, and the AF-D and AF Range Control modes. The first six lenses to receive the support are: 50 mm F1.4, 24-70mm F2.8 ZA, 28-75mm F2.8, 70-400mm F4-5.6 G, 500mm F4, and the new 300mm F2.8 Mk II. More lenses will be supported via future firmware updates.

    1. I noticed that caveat as well.

Honestly I don’t care about AF-D and tracking as much as having ultra accurate AF and eliminating the need for AF microadjustment. But it seems like the sensor AF pixels may not be completely supported on all lenses, altho it is unclear exactly whether they will be used at all on non-supported lenses.

  38. A few things disappoint me… No new lens optimized for video. have to buy 4 year old zeiss glass at premium cost which is not video optimized. A77 viewfinder (I really think that they could have invested here and upped the bar) = a real shame for low light work. A77 focus system as well.. sigh.. Like the video features but notice how carefully they are not mentioning full time AF in PASM modes. improved iso in video is excellent. I did notice the video I saw from its footage had a fair bit of noise even in properly exposed areas and in low light the sony sensors seem.. murky. I think it may be a result of the pelicle mirror but I certainly noticed it on a77 and I am very concerned a99 will have same issue. Video is decent but aside from superior dof (which was annoyingly dominated by noise and bad singing) the GH2 seems to have cleaner footage.. Then again they dont say iso levels. Ill be lucky to get 1500% for my a77 with kit lens and have to pay 5000$ for this cam with kit lens… darn it. Would have been happy if they upgraded the viewfinder by 50% resolution and improved its low light sensetivity by same amount.

  39. Personally I’m disappointed with AP points area. Is it possible to focus on a person’s eyes then they are outside the small center area with AF points? That is a very common situation at portrait shooting.

  40. I am eyeing nex-6 and I like what I saw and read so far. Waiting for review for this one.

There is scarce info on LA-EA3 front. from the picture, I think it is ‘LA-EA1’ for full frame. There goes my my image stabilize A-mount adapter!

      1. From SONY Nex-6 official website (http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666488065#features), it is featured,
        “Advanced Control Dial
Mode control dial and Quick Navi assure quick an intuitive operation comparable to DSLR cameras Control dial, Fn (function) button and touch screen (including touch shutter function) combine to greatly facilitate operation and speed getting the shot.”

        If I misunderstand it?

        Thanks.

        N.Y.

        1. My personal suspicion is that it was a planned feature that was removed at the last minute.

A less likely scenario is that it is currently disabled in firmware as the press release firmware is “v.01” pre-production according to DPR. Every site which has done a hands-on preview reports that there is no touch-screen functionality.

          1. That’s what I also noticed. However, I still hope SONY is a serious company and will not be careless to announce features not available on its official website.

If it has touch screen enabled, I will be sure to buy it..

  41. Everything is imperfect.

    RX1 = too expensive
A99 = Bad, worst and shit 28mbps in video( why not ALL-I compression)???
VG900 = lack of FF NEX lenses + Bad, worst and shit 28mbps in video( why not ALL-I compression)?????

    looser…

    1. It’s spelled ‘loser’ not ‘looser’
By the way, the A99 and VG900 output through HDMI clean 8-bit 4:2:2 image quality.

      1. Thanks for correcting Phillip.

and now say ”did we travelled all the way ( by seeing 5d’s, H.264, AVCHD, 2007-12, D800, SONY F3, FS100) to have 8bit 422 in additional recorder and why not a proper codec in camera its self ?????

        1. It’s spelled ‘Philip’ with one ‘L’. And do you seriously expect to get 10 or 12-bit 4:4:4 video codec from a DSLR camera?? You might be in the wrong forum. Why don’t you to look into the Blackmagic Cinema Camera instead.

  42. Why not Dual Bionz processor for A99? That could have helped to bring fps higher than just 6fps. (I mean, A900 was capable of 5fps, many expected more fps given there is no moving mirror)

  43. Is anyone seeing the distribution of AF points in A99??

What the hell Sony was thinking putting all the AF points in the center area only? I bet they reused the same AF system of A77 covering only the APSC field of view.

And, 6fps?? ….Great! What a joke for your flagship PRO alpha.

  44. wtf, ARE THEY SERIOUs???!!!

In addition, the A99 has two Tele-zoom Continuous Advance Priority AE modes to achieve a continuous shooting speed of 8fps or 10fps. As you may have already guessed from the name, the camera will crop the image (thus giving a zoomed-in effect) in order to attain the faster speeds. At 8fps, the resulting image has a resolution of about 10MP; at 10fps, it’s about 4.6MP.

  45. According to the press release it looks like you have to buy the adaptor to use your existing flashes on the A99 seperately.

Yet more money on top of an outrageous selling price.

Sony just lost a sale. Possibly even a user.

Hope they are happy. I am not.

    1. The way Sony introduced A99, it seemed to me that they are on their way to ditch the alpha lineup by intentionally downgrading its potentials. They appear to be busy in building more on the NEX and RX series. It’s as if they themselves knew that A99 wouldn’t sell much in the market compared to Canikons, so no point in trying to make it a perfect camera. They targeted mostly the people who would give away their money for any new Sony model and those who invested heavily on the alpha lenses and just needs a new FF body irrespective of any competative advantage. Thus, Sony knows that they can rip these people off with any FF camera tagged with any ridiculous price.

Anyways, these are just my assumptions and I sincerely hope they’re not true. I also see CZ releasing more and more Canon & Nikon mount lenses these days than for the alpha mount. Hope Sony wouldn’t nail the coffin on alpha mount with A99 selling poorly in the market.

    2. The adapter to use existing sony flashes on the a99 is included in the package when you buy a99. So what’s all the fuss about? It is no extra cost for the buyer. And If you buy the new HVL-F60AM flash, they will include an adapter to be able to use it on the older Minolta iIso hotshoe. Sony had thought this over and is supporting users… I don’t see any problem with this.

  46. Great day! Conflicted on what I should buy… Gonna have to try the NEX-6 out first.

I guess all those photoshop experts claiming a lot of those leaked photos where photoshopped where humbled a bit today. 🙂

  47. adapter comes in the box, apparently, but if not, I am sure there will be cheap alternatives from HK within a few weeks.
People complain that Sony don’t listen to reviewers or the customer yet almost every review I have ever read has criticized Sony for using a non-standard hot show, so, now you have what you have been asking for.

The outrageous price is still lower than both the competition at RRP. FF cameras aren’t cheap.

  48. A99

    NO WIFI, NO TETHERED SHOOTING

    ITS CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!

I MIGHT PISS ON IT TO SEE IF IT IS PROPERLLY WEATHER SEALED!

      1. Well, maybe the saving grace would be a wifi module attached to their new IO port on the flash housing.

It’s going to be an additional cost…

    1. @wth – Wifi on the a99? Methinks you’re better off with your iPhone as the jpegs on a FF may be too big to send your cat photos to your Facebook page. And if you bothered to read the specs you’d see tethered shooting is available. Clearly you’re not in the market for this camera, don’t pretend otherwise.

        1. You still here? Shouldn’t you be playing angry birds and sending happy snaps of your lunch to your fb feed? Run along little troll.

          1. Shouldn’t you be rolling up newspaper while waiting for your film to be developed at your local kodak store that is about to go into administration…

      1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1sU8QADjhQ

“Clearly you’re not in the market for this camera, don’t pretend otherwise.”

Ohh lookie here… Nikons D4 has wifi and a built in web server…
Clearly EVERYONE who buys a Nikon D4 is sending cat photos to their Facebook pages… Clearly they are not in the market for the A99… After all only novice photographer would use a Nikon D4 flagship camera….

TROLL?… Heh! Here is a mirror.

    2. WIFI tethered shooting…

Remote viewing functionality for people that wants to review their shots live without the hassle of removing cards….

WIFI to transmit photos automatically when you are within range of your router to your NAS system.

WIFI to trigger off remote snaps at large distances…

      Nikon D4 has wifi…
Even the 1DX has a gigabit ethernet port…

      SONY FLAGSHIP A99
PULL IT OUT AND FIDDLE WITH YOUR CARD READER!

  49. Andrea, good Job! Another year of spot on rumors! 😉 You’re the man!

say thanks to your sources! Take a good nap, that another year of rumors is about to begin!

    1. Admin did a mistake when SAR5 call out Pro Nex turn become digital FF compact on the next day with SAR5. That is even silly when rumor’s data provider call it as Game Changer! really mis-leading us to over happy state, at end of the day, many of us disagree on the term of ‘game changer’ 😀

Anyway, Andrea did a VERY good job AGAIN to early launch those camera for us 😀 lol… The official annoucement is no surprise to us lol…

        1. It’s got lost in all the noise. But yes. It’s the only full frame camcorder out there !!. And it’s e-mount. Groundbreaking if you’re into video or ENT.

  50. Copied fron sonystore specifications.

Burst Buffer : w/ SD (UHS-I compliant) memory card: Cont. shooting Hi: Extra FINE 15, FINE 24, STD 29, RAW 15, RAW+JPEG 12

Looks like buffer got also a bit bigger than A77.
A bit dissapointed with the 6fps full-res (expected at least 8), but still looks great for the price. Can’t wait to see some IQ full-res samples.

  51. Hi andrea,

Quoting from steve huff’s comment in his blog
“BTW, some sites are posting a carousel shot saying it is the 1st shot from the RX1..but the only problem is that is a shot from the RX100, NOT the RX1. Sony screwed up in their media package with that one and told me there are no sample shots as of yet with the RX1 so if you see that carousel shot it was taken with an RX100 not RX1!”

    1. I don’t know…. But it seemed important enough for SONY to make it a critical feature on all of their enthusiast cameras…

      NEX 3 – 7
      Alpha 55 – 77

Perhaps it wasn’t really that important to begin with, which basically means it was all bullshit for the other cameras…

      1. I think you are mistaken about the NEX-6 having a touchscreen.

DPR mentions the lack of a touchscreen a few times during their preview and they had the camera in their hands. They thought it was a major omission. In the last page of the preview at http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sony-alpha-nex-6/6 they write “We do find some questionable decisions, the most obvious being the lack of a touchscreen in a camera that so heavily touts camera apps and Wi-Fi smartphone connectivity”.

        1. No touchscreen, no screen focus point selection. What is the cost of a touch screen ? Big mistake from Sony. Or maybe they will keep that for the next version announced within a year or so from now !

          1. However from http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/12/first-impressions-sony-nex-6/

It does have a touchscreen … also from From SONY Nex-6 official website (http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666488065#features), it is featured,
            “Advanced Control Dial
Mode control dial and Quick Navi assure quick an intuitive operation comparable to DSLR cameras Control dial, Fn (function) button and touch screen (including touch shutter function) combine to greatly facilitate operation and speed getting the shot.”

If there are 2 versions of Nex-6 with different firmware? One is with touch screen enabled, one is not…

Admin, could you help confirm this from our sources?

            Thanks.

            N.Y.

    1. Some terrible news…

      from: http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/12/first-impressions-sony-nex-6/

Second correction: Sony says this is a mistake. It does not have a touch shutter. We apologize for the mistake.

But from the discussion on button: ChrisGampat said : I did test the camera and I swore there was one. In fact I have the slide saying there was one too.

      It was a mistake.

Maybe the displayed NEX-6 yesterday did has touchscreen but not put it on the selling NEX-6 in the future? Sony shouldnt do this!!

  52. I know the price has already been posted previously but it’s official! It’s a sad day for consumers when a Cybershot is released at $2800. 🙁

  53. Looks to me like the a99 is almost identical to the 5d3

Same resolution, same fps (that stupid crop mode thing doesn’t count), and I guess the a99 will have better ISO/dynamic range than Canon.

There are some nice features, but honestly I’m a bit underwhelmed. There’s nothing really new or exciting about the a99 imo. Only 6fps is disappointing when we were all expecting 10fps – it means that there is really no reason to get the a99 compared to the 5d3 since it isn’t significantly faster. With this super 102pt AF system, Sony really could have blown up the market with 10fps 🙁

    1. Agree… doesn’t look like a flagship camera. Doesn’t even use Sony XQD card. There will be another FF DSLT that will probably coming in 2013… maybe.

    2. First we were expecting 12fps then 10 (but on the bright side 14 bit raw). Now 6 fps so only half of first rumors..
But maybe more important: 102 AF points only work with some lenses. So we have to wait to see if the AF is any good with other glas.

      1. Also… the AF points are grouped together in the center area only and are not spread out throughout the frame… as if it’s covering only the APSC field of view. It makes me wonder if A77’s 19-point AF system is used directly on A99 without any modification.

I still cannot believe Sony would make such a silly move by putting all the AF points in the center area, and leaving the left and right thirds of the frame almost empty of any AF point. With such stupid arrangement, I doubt A99 can correctly track a moving object across its frame.

Here’s the distribution of the AF points:
        http://4.static.img-dpreview.com/previews/sony-alpha-slt-a99/images/screens/AF-Range.jpg?v=1574

    3. I’d be shocked if any current SLT camera has better iso performance than the 5D3/D800. Different technology, different strengths and weaknesses. You cannot perform better in low light when you inherently let in less light before you even put a lens on the body. At higher ISO settings you are already at a disadvantage.

The RX1 will be a better low light performer than the A99.

  54. From DPReview:

“If it lives up to the promise (and a lot of that will depend on how fast the autofocus works, and how dependable it is in low light), the RX1 could easily become a classic, used by photojournalists and other working pros who need a small, flexible camera with excellent image quality. The image quality samples we’ve seen have been confidence inspiring, offering the low-light performance and shallow depth-of-field that only really come from having a fast lens in front of huge sensor.”

Now you can all shut it! you unfaithful bastards!

  55. Also, has everyone noticed the changed hotshoe?

I’m glad I sold my HVL58AM flashes. Typical Sony.. never stick to anything

  56. gx1… $2800 + $600 + $250 + $180 + $250 = $4080
In this case, I will buy a Leica, for sure. I never pay a errrr… $4040 for a SOUNYYYY
    Sounyyyyyy are smoking hard, indeed.

  57. I’m not quite sure where all this WiFi griping is coming from. Never had a reason to use it myself, and when I shoot big events (Olympics, Paralympics, Premiere League, etc) the first rule they always stress at the press briefings is “No WiFi, No Flash!” This applies to everybody, like AP, UPI, Getty, etc. I was “this close” to selling every bit of my Sony kit after shooting a 1DX and a D4 in London last week that the service counters lent out to me, but then saw the imminent release info for the a99. I am pretty sure that this will suit all of my professional needs at least 99% of the time, and I won’t be spending $7,000 on a new body. There do seem to be a few trolls about today, and you can’t always please all of the people all of the time. Cheers!

  58. Have you seen the contacts on the new flash shoe (the tiny contacts at the far end) and also the coresponding contacts on the flash? My god, they won’t last a long time. They look so fragile and I really fear that dirt will become a problem for them. Why for heaven’s sake haven’t they chosen a solution like Nikon, Canon, Panasonic,… with all the contacts under the baseplate and not at the edge?????? Fail?!

  59. UK prices are waaaaaayyy tooo high:

    RX1 – £2599 – Nikon D800 costs £2279!!!
    35 f/1.8 – £399 – you can get nikkor AF-S 35mm f/1.8 for £169!!!

  60. I will get this a99 because I am sick of wait for a full frame sony alpha and I don’t want to go with canon or nikon. A better ff camera will probably come out and I will sell the a99 as a used piece of gear to make some money back then will probably buy the newer ff.

  61. I have been with Minolta and Sony for 30 years now. I always felt this company had the most innovative products, best quality, and best value over Nikon and Cannon. No WiFi, and 6FPS is a big disappointment for the initial offering. I was really excited and willing to kick out 3k for this camera. Now I just don’t know. If the image quality for high ISO is excellent, I may consider it. Right now, I am very disappointed.

  62. As all new E-lenses are now available in black, does anyone know if Sony will release the older lenses (for example the 30 and 50mm ones) in black too?

  63. Sony should have shaken the competition, bringing a better camera than the other firms. They don’t. As a big electronics company they bring a camera that is equal to the others. Big disappointment for me.

I stay with my A850 and thinking of switching to the d800.

    1. It brings a tear to my eye knowing that people are comparing the A99 to the D600…

The A900 was a beautiful Camera.

      Ohhh how Sony has fallen…

  64. Some funny comments on here. While all you little trolls are chained to your keyboards whining about some obscure feature – WiFi? Seriously? How the eff did we ever take photos without WiFi?!!! – I’ll be outside shooting the hell out of the A99. Kudos to Sony for bringing a compelling package to market.

    1. YOU TELL EM CHAD!!!!

Clearly Nikon doesn’t have a clue when they included WiFi connectivity in their Cheap-O Toy of a D4 Camera.

Clearly the move of Canon to include a Ethernet port in their 1DX is pointless.

PFFFFT! What do those companies know, clearly they are deluded. This is the reason why Sony is a WINNER!

As the warlock once said… WINNING!

      BRAVO!!! /golfclap

Clearly the people wanting a bit more is obviously “holding it wrong”…

      1. Spoken like a true Troll.

What is your malfunction anyway. You are all over this site like a bad plague. Is that how you enjoy spending your time – deriding others as fools?

I’m sorry the A99 does not meet your needs and that you feel the need to demean anyone who plans on purchasing one. Not all of us feel the need to defend our brand, some of us just choose a tool and make good use of it.

I have a cabinet of working tools that include film and digital bodies from many different manufacturers and eras that produce different types of images to suit the project or my mood. And Canon has been my digital DSLR platform for 12 years – a great one at that. Guess what? I sold all my Canon bodies and L glass because I saw the benefits of Sony’s direction, not because Canon or Nikon suck, but because I want to explore new tools. And amazingly, even with what you must think is a “lowly” A900, my work is equal to what I produced with Canon. I can only look forward to what the A99 will help me produce.

So in summary, please, step away from the computer, take a look in the mirror and repeat – ” I will stop being a troll, no one likes a troll, and my photography is suffering”

  65. REALITY CHECK!!!

Sony: We are discontinuing the A900

Photographers: WHAT!!! But that is our only Fullframe Camera in the Sony System

Sony: Don’t worry it will be replaced with the A99

Photographers: But most of the features on the A99 is targeted at Videographers

Sony: No it has more focus points and it takes slightly better pictures

Photographers: But other camera companies has achieved the same level of accuracy using other technologies without the need of a SLT and their quality is much better.

Sony: Yes, but it is much better for video…

Photographers: But you said it wasn’t targeted at Videographers

Sony: We added a standard hotshoe!

Photographers: But that is for your new Flash with LED lights for Video

Sony: It has a propriety data connection on the hot shoe

Photographers: But that is for your external Microphone for Video!!!

Sony: We have added a new function button on the front of the camera with a silent operation.

Photographers: Since when do we need a silent wheel for Photography?

    Sony: It takes 14bit images

Photographers: So does all the competitors…

Sony: … It is more dust resistant than the A77

    Photographers: Really?

Sony: We added lock button on the mode Dial

    Photographers: WOW!

Sony: So, $2800 for a lock on the Mode Dial and a bit more weather proofing.

    Photographers: SOLD!

  66. The HVL-F60M flash’s new multi-interface shoe is make from plastic or metal? Seem like the black colour part is make by plastic and very easily broken.
