UPDATE: Lens Cameras to be named “EspressOn”? Niet says a source

BGR (Click here) reports that the new QX lens series will be called “ExpressOn”. UDPATE: But a source just told me this isn’t correct. Literally the source said: “some idiot is mispronouncing the code name“. LOL 🙂

Reminder: Sony will soon launch two “lens-cameras”:
1) One is the “Lens-camera” with RX100MII sensor and  Zeiss lens ($750 here on Amazon). On the pictures it is the bigger lens. As you know the RX100 is the most praised high end compact camera and features a large 1 inch sensor which is the same size used by the Nikon 1 system. Now you can have that kind of Image Quality on your iPhone or Android Smartphone!
2) The second model will feature a 10xzoom lens with 1/2,3 inch 18 megapixel CMOS sensor (the image with the f/3,3-5.9 lens). It’s basically the same sensor and lens of the Sony WX150 ($400 on Amazon).

  1. For the price this seems great but I’m having problems wondering if this is really practical, I really need to see this in action to conclude if this is genius or stupid.

    1. Buyer beware! There’s hardly a mobile phone out there that uses the same connectors as models five years old. You’ll be buying a product that in a two or three years time will be supplanted with a “new, improved” data-interface that is “unfortunately” incompatible with earlier products. All for the benefit of future consumers – but at the cost of existing users.

  2. Bad name … but will be interesting to see whether it sells well or not. Should at least deliver the best possible image quality at its price compared to other compact cameras.

  3. zzzz…. *Wakes up* Is the new NEX 7 or FF ready yet? No? Just stupid low end models? *Goes back to sleep* zzzz….

  4. In the article:
“… the RX100 … features a large 1 inch sensor which is the same used by the Nikon 1 system.”

No, it is not “the same”. The Nikon 1 system uses a 10 Mp 1″ sensor from Aptina, but the RX100 uses a 20 Mp 1″ sensor from Sony. But it is ‘the same size’.
    .

  5. the bottom line is PRICE …. with $700 you can buy an good nex system even with the $400 almost priced with the a3000 …. if sony can sell them at $150-$200 MAYBE? ..^^

  6. @Admin: You stated several times that the 1″ sensor in the RX100 is the same like in the Nikon 1 – this is wrong. The sensor in the Nikon 1 is made by Aptina, an electronics company in Italy and the sensor used in RX100 is from *** surprise *** Sony !

The only thing both sensors have in common is it’s dimension of 1 inch diagonlly.

The sensor in the Nikon 1 is simply awfull, try it out 😉 .

  7. I wonder where they put the battery in this camera/lens..?…and how manu shots can you take before the battery end?

    1. That indeed would be the only redeeming temptation, revealing a clear advantage to what is already available on the phone itself. I don’t think phone togs are really all that concerned about ultimate resolution as much as the ability to photograph natural light more efficiently.

But what do I know. My marketing research team is much smaller than Sony’s. I think.

  8. Price is looking good, I really hope this will come with a great IOS App.

I hope this product succedes, this could be the beginning of a new trend and greater products to come.

I know some complain about the size not being worth it, but imagine the future. The possibility of prime lenses , APC-S or even full frame?

I wouldn’t mind paying 800$ to 1K for a 50f2 full frame camera lens. Whit a combo like that a smart phone and lens would be a lot smaller then carrying a DSLR say a A99 and lens.

This would give the average consumer great pictures at a fraction of the price and the ultimate compactness.

  9. making sure the lens isn’t going to fall off will be a challenge. And where are you supposed to put those lenscameras? phone cameras are successful because you always have them with you anyway, tucked in a pocket or whatever and always ready to take a picture (given a bit of delay). Where will you put your lens camera? and why would you bring that instead of a normal P&S compact? And will the customers approve of the extra start-up time (take phone from pocket A, take lens from pocket B, connect them, wait for app to start) I guess someone saw the answers to those questions.

Maybe they’re meant for use as remote-controlled cameras more so than just as smartphone P&S add-ons? Just clip it to a plate that’s fastened to a wall, or some sort of stand or even have a friend carry it in his/her hand in a discrete fashion. I could see it being used for that, connected to a wireless network and pictures transmitted either directly via wifi or lens -> local wifi A -> internet -> local wifi B -> phone. Could be made part of a home surveillance system even.

    1. theres a button on the lenscamera that activates the NFC which sends the signal to the phone to open playmemories mobile app, i dont think pulling them out is that difficult. you can jus keep the lenscamera in your other pocket when its not being used

if these things become popular in the future for tourist, you don’t hand people a p&s camera and ask them if they could take a photo of you, you ask them to hold the lenscamera and then you look at your phone and take a photo of yourself! that would be funny to see 😛

  10. A pretty stupid product idea

Actually, the cheaper one seems the only interesting one as it looks like the only one that will fit easily into a pocket. IQ might not be so much better than the camera phone but the FL range could be useful

I think it would be better to buy a ‘closeout’ RX100 (or a closeout RX100II in 12 months) than spending the same money on that chunky-looking, expensive QX100

  11. i’ actually think this sounds pretty good if it’s pretty compact and reasonably priced. I’ve always complained about cell phone pics and thisseems to be a decent answer.. Tricky call if the price is around the same as the rx100 ’cause the iQ is very similarr to the mkii.
