Great news! Sony A7 and A7r firmware update coming on March 19!

Sony Japan officially announced a new A7 and A7r firmware release for March 19! And these are the improvements (translated from Japanese):

– support for the focus hold button of the new SEL 70-200G lens
– Start up time reduction
– Image quality improvement
– Adds Live view grading and smooth reflection application. Improves “Time Laps” APP.

I am now wondering what they mean with “Improved Image quality”!

  1. wow!! I’m impressed with Sony. I didn’t expect to see firmware updates so soon but I can’t complain 🙂 Image quality improvement could be the jpg improvements considering how dpreview was criticizing the a7/r’s jpg IQ…..or maybe they have fixed their lousy raw file size compression…

    http://www.minipixels.net | Automotive Photograph + Design

  2. Very nice notice. I hope they would upgrade firmware more frequently as eg. Fuji. It would be great but if even not, I wouldn’t change my camera to any other 🙂

  3. I think that it would have been nice to include some modified shutter timing for the A7R. The light leak problem, which is not firmware, needs to be address in the very near term.

The image improvement is some subtle tweak of the jpg engine. Perhaps, they will back off on the out of the box noise reduction.

I only shoot raw, so there isn’t much here.

  4. And what about the dreaded double / triple push for live magnification? The NEX was so much better about that…

  5. What a bunch of cry babies.
When Sony didn’t release firmware fixes that was the problem.
When Sony didn’t have enough lenses that was the problem.
When Sony didn’t innovate that was the problem.

I guess you guys just don’t have money for a a7r… But one day you might afford one if you stop trolling and do some real work.

    1. Yeah I think too. Also, wenn A Mount lens News are posted, everybody cries for E Mount. When E Mount lens News are posted, everybody cries why A Mount has been abondanded. Oh my god, if crying would make Money, there would be a lot of rich People…

    1. That is what People get wrong. This is an unofficial rumors site. RUMORS. Here you find rumors, not promises.

  6. No image improvement, PLEASE NO!

The last time they did that with NEX7 they cooked raw files with magenta cast reduction and higher noise reduction that left us with much worse images.

    http://verybiglobo.blogspot.com/2013/01/metabones-speed-booster-review-nex-7_31.html

Of course there was no way to roll back the FW update.

Sony, PLEASE, stop cooking RAW files or at least let us turn off the damn “image improvement.”

We all have lightrooms, photoninjas and what not. Our computers have much more power than that poor CPU in A7R.

Let us have the full unadulterated data from camera and leave us alone!

    1. Simply don’t be the 1st one to update the firmware. Let others be the guinea pig & see how it works out 🙂

    2. I am pretty sure, the A7R CPU is far more optimized and faster than a PC CPU will be for quite some time :)…

  7. Improvements I would like:

    – “Image can not be displayed” for review of images captured on A7R that happens randomly and occasionally should not happen anymore.

    – Option for true 14-bit captures (even if recording time is slow) and less “cooking” of RAW images.

    – EFC (electronic first curtain) for A7R.

    – Single push for image magnification.

    – Free “Apps”.

A global (at least EU) price reduction of the A7.

    1. EFC is not a possibility for A7R from what we know due to a sensor limitation. Unless they could already “almost” have released with the existing sensor but didn’t due to some other consideration (such as a high incidence of the uneven illumination phenomenon), and now they feel pushed into it due to complaints. But probably it just isn’t a possibility with this sensor, as they initially said.

    2. Free apps and price reduction aren’t improvements to the camera itself, so certainly has nothing to do with firmware.

      1. I agree but still would like them. The prices will be lowered, predictably as time goes, anyway. Why not do it now? 🙂

    3. “Image can not be displayed” happens on Macs because it creates temporary files starting with “.” to store thumbnails and other metadata.

    4. “”Image can not be displayed” ??? Ha ha the A77 had been doing that since release and is NEVER getting a fix! It’s hilarious that the A7R does it too, Sony are such a bunch of idiots!

  8. Waiting for your next posting stating the same thing. Does your A7R have a light leak problem? From what I gather, not all of them do. And how did you go about determining wether your A7R does have the problem. I am curious, as people seem to use different methods for determining if they have this problem.

          1. Sorry, I was joking! No BSI sensors larger than 1.0 inch type have been released. I just said that because the sensor seems to give light in the above picture, which is kind of ironic in light (pun not intended) of the recent light leakgate.

  9. Besides the electronic shutter, I think every single camera that has a mechanical shutter out there vibrates!!! LOL!!

    1. Ha! No chance. Probably a tweak to their jpeg area specific noise reduction.
Or maybe–even better, an antishock delay between closing and reopening the shutter.

      1. “Or maybe–even better, an antishock delay between closing and reopening the shutter.”

TBH I think that would be mentioned separately to image quality improvements.

        1. Unless they’re avoiding admitting the problem. From memory a number of fixes in the early a77 firmware updates weren’t mentioned in the release notes.

          1. I think they would have to admit it if they were to fix it by adding a delay option in the menus. If they added an ‘always on’ delay forcefully (without a menu option), it would not always be beneficial due to shutter lag. It would add to shutter lag whichever way they do it, but giving users the option to switch a delay on or off is the only sensible way to do it.

    1. I am totally with you Doug. What about the RX1? Sony, do you not know that we want the new hot shoe accessories to work on our RX1. Sony has totally abandoned this group of users and just hopes we dish out our cash for the A7 or A7r. As a Sony shooter since the first gen NEX-5, NEX-7 and RX1, this is history repeating itself. Fool my once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me… fool me three times – my relationship with Sony is over.

      1. I don’t get it. You actually got a first generation NEX-5 and still critisize Sony for non-updates!? The NEX-5 was one of the cameras that got by far the biggest updates, adding a HUGE number of features.

        1. I’ll agree partially with you Lofote, but personally choose to disagree as well. I stress personal. Where I agree with you is that they provided a pretty awesome firmware update to the NEX-5 which allowed all the nice JPEG affects and focus peaking, of course that was after the release of the next version of the NEX-5. I guess that was “big” update considering none of that existed prior, but there were no big updates afterwards. I am not expecting something that can’t be done like phase detection on the sensor, but come on – what about lens profile updates for new Sony e-mount Lenses? I would have loved to have the pancake zoom – would have made the old NEX-5 so much more pocketable. And if you read my comment as whole, there are 3 Sony cameras to pick at not just the NEX-5. I don’t recall any significant NEX-7 updates, not sure if they even updated it for the pancake. And there have been no RX1 updates. At the time I bought these, these were all flagships. The RX1 isn’t updated to accept any of the new hotshoe accessories – why? Sure I can buy non-Sony products to bandage the holes in Sony’s business model, but it just shows a complete lack of commitment from Sony’s business strategy. You want the wireless mic or stereo mic on the hotshoe, buy the RX1R or whatever new RX model we sell. Can’t waste the time to update your old flagship.

  10. Where is my RX1 firmware update? I want unmagnified focus peaking. Broader bracketing. Memorize focus position when saving power. Full 14 bit raw output (I’d even take full 11 bit raw output, frankly.)

  11. So! Finally the firmware update arrives, but wait!!… NO UNCOMPRESSED RAW?? Are you kidding me Sony?

        1. All RAW is compressed, but most of them losslessly.

Sony’s decision to use a lossy compression is beyond my comprehension =

  12. The point of this firmware upgrade is obviously (almost exclusively even) for the 70-200mm G lens release.
Don’t get your hopes up if you’re not getting that lens IMO.

Just relax. If Sony is doing the same thing they are doing for their Smartphones (the Xperia Z1 updates are very decent), firmware updates should be expected.

    1. “The point of this firmware upgrade is obviously (almost exclusively even) for the 70-200mm G lens release”.

You mean apart from the other improvements listed that have nothing to do with that particular lens?

      1. IMHO, there is a lot to do with the images produced by the A7. They are too soft even using the just released 24-70 I’ve tested with both, the kit lens and the 24-70 and im not quite satisfied with the results. Images are too soft, way too soft on the edges of objects and or faces.

          1. You are right. I just looked at the images I took with a 24-70 just out of the box at the Sony store and it produces better results. However the price for this combo its high. See image below taken this morning using the A7 and FE 24-70

      2. Image enhancement is such a vague term that’s been thrown around much too often.
Let’s think of it this way: do you think this firmware would have been release so early if the 70-200mm was not coming?

        1. I have no idea, but the fact that a firmware update is coming at all is surely a good thing. Startup time alone makes it worth taking the time updating.

  13. I love my A7r, great camera, amazing picture quality. Light Leak, give me a break how many of us shooting 30 second exposures at ISO25600 with light source next to it. For 99% of users this is irrelevant. I have not experienced any shutter vibrations with my 55 FE lens.

    1. Nobody shoot 30 second at ISO 25600 but you are missing the point. The reason why the test set to ISO 25600 is to make it easier to look for light leak without waiting for hours.

        1. No you don’t. But some of the light leak is bad enough that it will shows in picture with much shorter exposure at ISO 100, stacked with a few ND filter.

  14. One thing they need to do is to fix Auto ISO so, like in other cameras with high mp sensor (like Nikon D600 and D800, Canon 5DM3) you can pick the min shutter speed to exceed the focal length comfortably if you’d like, or reduce it in case of Image stabilized lenses, if one likes.

      1. Well that is what I end up doing, using manual mode all the time. Another workaround (kind of solution) is that if you put 55 FE in Crop Mode, it becomes a 85/1.8 16MP but the shutter speed at Autoiso increases to 1/100, which is typically adequate, but that’s not a real solution

  15. Ok, but the history of Sony, this will be the first and probably the last firmware update for A7 and A7R

        1. When did you buy it? I’ve had mine since it 1st came out – compared to the original firmware it’s a completely different camera…

  16. Also still waiting for firmware update to my RX1. Sony’s disdain for existing, longtime customers is getting old… 🙁

    1. They don’t feel disdain. Just the opposite. They’re providing the motivation for you to buy the next incarnation of the RX1 that will address the very issues you’re having.

  17. “Start up time reduction”
    Always welcome.

    “Image quality improvement”
Well that’s disconcertingly vague. Maybe Sony got rid of the A7 sensor reflections 😉

“Adds Live view grading and smooth reflection application.”
Adds them where? To the camera for free, or to the app store? And WTF is Live view grading?

    1. some people were complaining that the raw files are not true 14 bit and the compression hurts the files so maybe the raws will be uncompressed or maybe the jpegs will just get a update.

      1. it would be great to get uncompressed raw… that’s an obvious omission. it does not show up all the time. it shows up somehow when converting contrasty scenes to black and white (specially with a color filter)… then you get the ugly posterization.

    2. With Live View grading mentioned in conjunction with time-lapse they likely mean video grading on the rear LCD of the timelapse video. Grading is the terminology used to make adjustments to video characteristics like brightness, contrast, color balance, etc…

  18. SONY, do this, this is what I want.

    1. Focus Magnifier / Zoom in one button press like NEX. An additional menu option would be to have the option to change the behavior of the one click, where one click can equal any of these 3 user pref. Maximum magnification first, Minimum magnification first or the current style framing mode.

    2. Startup times need improved to feel like a pro tool. Currently the camera is inconsistent here. Agreed that major work is needed on power management, start-up/wake-from-sleep times, and lag when changing settings.

    3. Buggy system. For example, when ISO is mapped to default wheel location, sometimes it simply does not work when wheel is turned. This is not acceptable, as I’ve had to map a backup button for ISO for when this bug happens. It happens often.

    4. Fix the auto sensor so that it doesn’t mistake the shirt/belly as an eyeball and switch to the viewfinder…even though one is shooting with the screen. An option to adjust the sensitivity of the back screen in proximity to the body/eye before switching would be nice.

    5. Option to completely turn off LCD (not just turn display black

    INCLUDING the backlight.)

    6. Manual lens data entry, room for at least 10 lenses.

    Thanks!

    1. 3. Sure that’s not just your camera? Never happened to me – in fact I think it’s a bit too easy to turn that wheel and change ISO by accident.

      1. I played with the A7 at the Sony Store and found the ISO wheel to lag for 2 or 3 secs… It was terrible. I’d adjust the S/A with the dials and then turn the back wheel for ISO but nothing would happen for a good 2 seconds. Serious error.

        1. Something amiss somewhere then. My A7 seems fine – if there is any lag it can be counted in milliseconds, certainly nowhere nears 2-3 secs.

      2. Yea, no problem in controlling my ISO wheel. It’s quick and at times, a little too easy to change. Would love a have a Lock Wheel as function to map to a Custom button.

      3. I used the A7r for an hour at the Sony store and it did this twice. I thought it was something I was doing until I just read this and realized I was not alone. I would go to twist the wheel to change the ISO and nothing would happen.

    2. Wouldn’t it be easier and more useful if magnification function works in a press-and-hold mode? Anyways, that, 5 and 6 are all I want.

    3. The one-click-to-zoom is very popular request. A side by side zoom view like Fuji’s new camera would also be excellent.

      1. I really want a side by side zoom like the X-T1 but I’ve tried it next to my A7 and the Fuji viewfinder display is significantly larger. It has more space to implement this feature. In fact, I’d say (while using the side by side feature on the fuji) the larger unmagnified window is the same (or very similar) size as the A7(r) viewfinder.

I think some sort of picture in picture (PIP) magnification is more than possible, perhaps we could select where the PIP well appear and also how big it is. An alternative is an old fashioned (albeit artificial) split prism style MF system.

Personally I’d go for a section in the centre that’s magnified, that way you can still frame properly by looking at the edges.

        1. Thanks for sharing your comparison experience. I always felt Fuji were behind for manual focus options, but they’ve leapfrogged ahead with the xt1.

        2. It may be a tad larger physically but it isn’t a higher resolution so no reason it couldn’t be implemented.

  19. My A7(R) AND RX1(R) firmware requests are few:

    1) Minimum shutter speed for Auto-ISO
    2) MORE ASPECT RATIOS! (4:3, 5:4 and 1:1 please). This is really a no-brainer option for any EVF equipped camera.

    1. Yes, please, more aspect ratios. I don’t understand why Sony doesn’t offer them on their cameras. All the other manufacturers do. Yes, you can crop in post but it’s not the same as seeing in the camera. I’ve been posting this on forums for a couple of years now.

I have a good friend who is a very recognized name in the photo world. He bought a Nikon 800E rather than the a7R because the Nikon offers a 4:5 aspect ratio which is what he is used to from years of working with 8×10 cameras. Please Sony, more aspect ratios.

      1. Glad I’m not alone on the cry for more aspect ratios. I too have been pushing this topic for years myself.

The benefits of composing a shot in its intended format are huge, and Sony’s use of electronic finders provides the greatest flexibility for doing so. It’s insane that they have not capitalized on this sooner.

        1. Ok, we have a two-person crusade now. It seems such a simple (firmware) issue. why no optional aspect ratios!!! I have projects that require a 1:1 ratio. I use my Lumix for them. I would love to use my a7R.

          1. What really confuses me is that the RX100/II has 4:3 and 1:1 options but the RX1 and A7 don’t. So it’s not like Sony is completely unaware.

          2. It appears they are designed be different teams. There does seem to be more cross over in the last couple of years but that is why the RX line was initially so different than the NEX despite trying to appeal a similar enthusiast market.

          3. I am joining this crusade as well.

In fact, this is going to make me switch to a different brand if this is doesn’t get implemented (or at least announced) quite soon…

          4. Yes, I had an RX100 and was delighted it offered the additional aspect ratios, especially the 1:1 that I often have projects that require it. It gave me hope that Sony was finally going to add this ability to all their cameras but it didn’t happen. I’m not an engineer and don’t really know what it takes to allow the additional ratios but think it wold be an easy firmware adjustment that won’t add any significant additional cost.

  20. Would be nice to get a firmware update for the A99. The current firmware has still quite a few bugs und if they want to get professional users, they better get their act together …

    1. Totally agree , as I would love to have a quicker start up time for my a99. It will be shameful if they don’t do the same for the a99!

  21. So may trolls.
Sony have obviously listened and brought out a FW updage asap. And now people are moaning before they even know what it does.
    What a bunch of cnuts.

The 24-70/4 is comparible to the Canon 24-70/4 even at 24mm
The new Fuji T1 has an insignificant light leak too (so did Canon’s own back lit LCD top screen too on recent cameras)

Grow up and take some photos. Wingers.

      1. Bought the 24-70/4 to my A7r but after a meticulous test I had to admit it is not OK! It is not sharp anywere until you stop it down to f8. I buy from a nice camera shop so I could return it.
I will stay with primes on this system. 35 and 55 right now and they are super. The sensor demands really sharp lenses. For tele Metabones/Canon lenses are OK but slow AF.

        1. I have seen multiple sample of Sony Zeiss 24-70/4 and all of them show soft corner. Center is OK tho. I think $800 is more reasonable for this performance.

  22. My guess for the iq improvement would be with jpegs. When dealing with fine details, they turn out quite blotchy I’ve heard. Still waiting to get my A7R though. 🙁

    1. They maybe changed the default NR. The A7 “high iso=normal” default setting trashes jpeg fine detail from iso 200 and up, going from slight to bad. It’s why that well-known review was so lame because they didn’t turn it “off”. I don’t why they did that, even a chimp wearing reading glasses could have figured it out.

  23. My complete list of firmware enhancement requests:
(A=High Priority, B=Medium Priority, C= Nice To have):

    – ReducePower on and Standby on times (A)

    – Implement true lossless compression of RAW files (A)

    – Remove the artificial auto-bracketing restrictions (A)

    – Put all crop modes on the same function rather than separating 1.5x crop from the
    other crop modes (A)

    – Fix Aperture Priority Auto ISO and allow the user to determine the slowest
    acceptable shutter speed (A)

    – Allow any function to be assigned to any programmable button or the function menu, not just shooting options (A)

    – Add option to save camera settings to the SD card (A)

    – Make a smaller focus spot size available for higher precision autofocus (B)

    – When delayed shutter modes are selected via the self timer function, close the
shutter immediately, then wait for the duration of the self-timer and take the
shot to reduce shutter induced vibration (B)

    – Require a half press to cancel viewfinder magnification rather than touch detection (B)

    – Improve Focus Peaking precision (B)

    – Enable the full -5 to +5 metering scale in the viewfinder rather than displaying -5 to
+5 but only using -2 to +2 in manual exposure mode and -3 to +3 in Aperture and
    Shutter Priority modes (B)

    – Allow Exposure Compensation dial to be re-tasked (B)

    – Eliminate the first screen that draws a bounding box when focus magnification is selected
    (C)

    – Add additional crop modes like 5:4 and Square (C)

    1. I think these are priority, as that dial is absolutely useless in manual and that box just delays focussing every time:

      – Allow Exposure Compensation dial to be re-tasked
      – Eliminate the first screen that draws a bounding box when focus magnification is selected

      1. Yes, I’m sure different people would prioritize differently based on how they use the camera. I just wanted to put up a complete list of everythign that i know about the camera that should be fixed and then my own priority list. Personaly I think they should fix them all ASAP 🙂

    2. – Make the fact that there are two dials useful in shutter-priority and aperture-priority modes, by allowing one of them to be fully customizable in those modes, leaving the other as “main” one (B)

  24. “Improved Image quality”!
Heard raw file for A7 and A7R is only 11Bit. Hopefully they can be real 14BIT after this update

    1. It’s 13 bit in single image mode and 12 bit in continuous modes (including autobracketing). However, there are some other factors that further weigh down the results such as lossy compression of the RAW file.

They would solve the majority of the valid complaints by offering lossless RAWs. It wouldn’t fix the oddities imposed by their questionable tonemapping algorithm (all cameras tonemap the data from the sensor, they just don’t all do it identically) but it would eliminate the contrast related artifacts and reduce the need for noise to produce smooth gradients until high levels of editing have been applied.

So my hope is for lossless RAWs.

  25. Arguably off-topic, but the lack of a single update to the RX1/R since launch is pretty stunning. It’s hard to imagine nothing could be done to improve autofocus accuracy in certain situations, and being forced to magnify to activate focus peaking under manual focus is a drag.

They should invest more time in this landmark camera,

  26. I have a bit of an off-topic question about the available languages in the A7/A7R display. I like to buy an A7R either in the Far East or the USA because of the 20%+ price advantage with Europe. I like to find out the available languages and/or if the Dutch language is build-in.

Currently the USA, Russia, Taiwan and India are the best place to purchase. So if there are current users from one of the above countries owning an A7R, I would appreciate it a lot if you could check this out and let me know. Thanks in advance.

    1. The USA models have only English, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and another character based language, perhaps one of the Chinese languages.

  27. Are they likely to improve on the video output from the cameras reducing moire? The A6000 seems to have very little. With the A7 and A6000 sharing similar sensor output size it might be possible?

  28. Hey SAR how about setting up a poll of most requested firmware updates. Something that can realistically be passed on to Sony. I think this is a valid area. Fuji has great customer loyalty based on the fact that Fuji constantly looks after its customer by supplying relevant and useful firmware updates. If Sony could do similar they would attract a much better following and higher loyalty. People want to know that they are being looked after and it isn’t all about sales!

  29. Westing times sony a7R is Failed Shutter Vibration image quality is bad with lenses 100 up the image is Blury

  30. Still waiting for a new Nex 7 firmware update. I got the feeling i will be waiting a long time.

  31. Can they bring back the Nex middle button enlarge, and making better use of the dial in the playback mode?

      1. What we mean it is not key assignment to manual focus assist but in playback (photo review) mode to enter into enlarging of taken photo with middle button (and central wheel). C2 button for zoom in, AEL button for zoom out and Menu button are extremly unfrendly for me and I cannot get use it since very first days of shipping A7 in Europe. In previous cameras, You could go in and out from magnifying photo with C-key and You could enlarge or reduce zoom level with roll of the wheel. I got used for it with Nex-5 and Nex-7. New keys are much uncomfortable, especially when You hold camera with one hand only.

    1. I fully agree with You, I really miss that feature…I am also very unhappy that they abandoned NEX GUI. I know that some people wanted it to be changed but customization doesn’t mean to forbid to use previous ergonomic schema. It is lack of good attitude toward loyal customers 🙁

      1. Totally agree, I miss that middle button enlarge button and dial wheel, this worked really nicely on the NEX. That was much easier than the current troublesome work mode. Should be a no-brainer to bring that back.

  32. i was hoping for full 1 stop brackets and be able to go from 5 to 9 brackets, plus the feature to fire the bracket shots with one button press. holding down the button to fire off only 3 brackets is pretty lame imo. Adding an interval timer would be ideal to accomplish this too.

  33. Reduced start up time will be good.
Faster autofocus and to be able to set minimum shutterspeed in autoiso mode is what I desire.

  34. damn.. i would really like to be able to use the camera while connectedto a charger… But i am really happy that updates is comeing! Hopefully more is to come!

  35. I wish the histogram would float above the ISO and shutter speed values displayed while ISO and shutter speed are changed. I also wish you could change the default / initial magnification used when zooming in to review an image during playback. I’d second those who’ve requested more options for aspect ratios and more liberal assignment of functions to buttons and dials.

  36. All I need is ability to set minimum shutter speed at auto ISO. There are times when I shoot fast paced events where light conditions change often. Would be nice to just worry about aperture at that point.

    1. I agree completely. I really really hope this gets fixed.

Hopefully Sony are reading all the feedback. It was even one of the main gripes on the dpreview.com review—which hopefully someone has read.

So many people are shooting alternative lenses at longer focal lengths, and 1/60 minimum just doesn’t cut it. Should be able to select a minimum shutter speed right up to 1/4000.

  37. ” I am now wondering what they mean with “Improved Image quality” ” ??

—-> MAYBE AN AUTOFOCUS THAT ACTUALLY DOES WORK !
Focusing where it should AND NOT IN THE BACKGROUND !

Any sharp image with my A7 would be a nice improvement YES, and thus much “Improved Image quality”!

    Please make it this : a working auto-focus …
