Full size Sony NEX-6 image samples (and manual download)

Sony posted the first NEX-6 full size image samples on Flickr (Click here). And the full manual is available for download at Fcc.gov. I am often very critic when it comes to talk about the new Sony cameras (see the A77 initial issues, the RX1 price, and so on). But honestly, the NEX-6 camera is the best camera Sony ever made when it comes to weight the price and feature balance. It has an a amazing sensor, and plenty of useful features and for $999 you get it with an handy 16-50mm pancake zoom. I can only highly recommend it!

  1. I have an 850, 5n and preordered the 99, but I may need one more camera. Looks to be a pretty awesome camera. I will have to decide if I need to keep or part with the 5n. Has anyone heard how the focus system is?

  2. I am not sure if 16-50 is sharp enough. Do you expect the quality of 16-50 to come out good with firmware update on production version…?

    1. Which photo is not sharp enough? They all look amazing to me. In fact, I didn’t realize this lens was capable of such great macros.

      1. Really? The 16-50 shots look horrible @ 16mm to me. The ghosting is awful, the corners are blurry, even the center isn’t that great.

  3. The samples are terrible! All different resolutions, some have been through lightroom, many are out of focus and some use really weird/unecessary settings like F/18

Sony, let ME do your sample photos next time!!! Or anyone who knows what they are doing!

    1. Agreed. These samples are overly saturated (I have an NEC PA271w calibrated with Lacie) and the sharpness isnt sharp, bur rather high contrast in colours. This samples should not be taken as fair representatives of what this camera could do because I and my 5n or 7 can do much better (especially since these look like they are shot in jpeg)

    2. The same impression i got, when looking at the samples. Was expecting much more than this. I am not even sure if the power zoom will deliver equal or better results than the 18-55 kit lens.?
I’ll skip this one and keep my 5n until sony comes out with a new nex-7. I mean they will have to release a new version of the 7 sooner than later, for it not to become obsolete, because the difference between the 6 and 7 is minimal now.

    3. Me too. Those images all look mediocre. My point-n-shoot compact camera can do better than this. Hopefully it’s not because of this lens kit.

Common…..NEX6 I’m sure you can do better than this.

  4. AHHHH… I really like the camera I think is the best that sony has realse since the a580, but the pictures are really bad or they have a really bad eidit… but I really dont like the camera DR.This could be just a really bad photographer, but it could be also that the camera doesnt have a good DR performace.

  5. Nice images, but let’s wait for real life samples before judging both, camera and lens.

However, unless it has some flaw, it will be my next camera and lens, besides my NEX5N that I will keep for life.

  6. Do we know which lens was used?

I see some of the other comments assuming that the new 16-50 pancake was used, but I don’t see any confirmation of this in the Flickr link.

EXIF is rather limited. I found one photo with intact EXIF, and it only mentioned a few lens details: focal lenght 23 mm and max. aperture value 4.5. These figures are consistent with a typical kit zoom, but we don’t know if it is the new pancake, and we don’t know if it was used for all photos.

    1. There are quite a few samples with very indicate EXIF info where one can make assumptions, which I think are quite accurate. For example, when looking at these pictures and also looking at the video about the making of these pictures, you can tell by seeing the lens on the camera and also you can probably make decent conclusions from the samples @ 16mm, f/3.5, among others.

    1. If you mean NEX-5, yes, it will be quieter. Since the NEX-5N all Nexes have an electronic first curtain shutter, which is notably quieter.

  7. Many of the images have bad motion blur, are out of focus, or something is just plain goofy with them.

There are other examples on the web that show this lens to be much better.

Let’s just hope that these images are form an early version of the lens and software and that the production version will be much much much better.

  8. So funny to read the different opinions about the IQ: Amazing and terrible. Well, the truth will be in the middle I guess. @16mm wide open it won’t be a fantastic performer, but it might be better compared to the 16mm pancake. What more do you expect?

  9. The camera might be good, but lenses are bad and Sony is widely known for not caring about the current holders of Sony cameras.

  10. I cannot tell anything about sharpness of 16-50 but I know for sure that focusing speed is about 25% slower than old kit lens (I compared it with my nex7 kit on Photokina).

  11. Carl is right. So is Andrea.

Look at the initial problems with the A65/A77. The very poor Jpeg engine and ISO problems still exist (even, apparently, with the new cams as well) with nothing whatsoever coming from Sony to help.

Sony really don’t care about existing camera owners, all they want to do is keep on pushing out more and so called better cameras which still have their problems and which, as Sony keep proving, they do not care about and will not fix.

Sony’s fix is to give us another new camera.

Sorry Sony, we have had enough. You are taking yourself on a very slippery road downwards with your poor reputation for customer care.

As I have said before, you make great sensors…It’s just a pity that you don’t get the best out of them because of your poor firmware team. You let everyone else beat you…..with your own sensors.

Sony….Please sort out your firmware team and give us updates to give our A65/A77’s (and others)a proper Jpeg engine and better ISO. QUICKLY…before it’s too late.

  12. Yes, really quite disappointing image quality. Look over processed and soft and some images are only posted as small sizes which suggests they would not look too good at full size. I’m looking for a good reason to buy this rather than a 5N and I can’t see it in these images.

  13. At full size, Images have strange, strong artifacts. Images were taken between 25th and 29th of July, so I believe the camera back then didn’t have the final firmware

  14. really battling with if it’s worth it to get one of these latest gen NEX cameras when the previous gen has the exact same sensor. It does seem to be a big plus that this comes with a nice kit lens at a bit of a discount. That alone wouldn’t do it though, since I mostly want to use legacy lenses with the NEX system. The deciding factor will be build quality and how much faster the new AF is.

  15. The set of features on NEX-6 looks promising. But it’s only as good as its AF is. So far Sony seriously lags in AF speed and accuracy among all the big manufacturers.
And then it’s a bit hard to take a camera seriously if it’s made of plastic … especially at $850. Sony just does keeps not making any sense: for example their NEX 18-55 kit lens is both elegant and well built but optically seriously inferior to Canon’s cheap and plasticy kit lens.

  16. Thanks to Admin for sharing. Its too early to tell as these photos are definitely edited. cant wait to see OCC Jpegs and RAW. For now i would still go for NEX7 which have better details BUT maybe a downside to high ISO capabilities. 5N image quality is definitely a keeper IMHO. IF there is a new firmware for NEX7 or a future release with a 24mpxl improvements i would get that one. for now im investing getting all good lenses for E-mount then worry about the camera body later. Im satisfied with my 5N for now.

  17. These samples are odd to say the least. Straight from JPEG? Post-processed? Some of them, particularly the plane photos, seem to be run through a filter. Odd that they don’t seem to be done from RAW, if they are supposed to be Sony official samples.

  18. Yes very strange set of photos, are these guys photographers or are they some sort of competition winners or something? I’ll reserve judgement on lens quality until it comes out, but you can not expect miracles from such a lens, Panasonic’s collapsible is rather average too.

    1. Thanks for the link. The firmware in these photos is not the final one, From the article (Google translated): “in this case must be taken into account that the camera was in pre-production series, not the final firmware (v. 1.00)”

But the EXIF says software is Adobe Photoshop CS6, I’m not sure what that means,
      Here’s the Google translation link

      http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.grafika.cz%2Frubriky%2Fdigitalni-fotografie%2Fsony-alfa-nex-6-poprve-v-ruce-158666cz%3Fsend

  19. The samples show that the sensor has very good dynamic range, but the lens sharpness is really poor. You will probably still need the good “old” Sigma 30mm F2.8 or Sigma 19mm F2.8 to get decent sharpness at an affordable price and really bring out the best of this sensor.

So the new NEX cameras are good, but the 16-50mm lens is just like the old ones, an average lens, yet this time it is also compact.

  20. According to the EXIFs many of the photos were taken with “digital zoom” – the results is IMHO rather poor.
What I really do not understand is the extreme ghosting – can be seen very clearly on the picture with the waterfall and the people on the cliffs (grafika.cz examples). When you watch the red women to the right – she is practically duplicated – but it is not exactly the same shape! Can this come from the lens?? Or is it a firmware issue? For me it looks like a kind of double exposure.
