Sony 70-200mm FE will has the same distortion like 18-105 f4 ? Shame Sony . I had to send lens back .

That looks pretty awful.
I have the SAL70200G2, and it is awesome on both the A850, and A99. It was expensive but at the end of a year I can just write it off as a capital expense. Maybe you should pawn of the A7, and get a A99 with 70200G2.
Or you can get the Minolta AF 70-210mm F4 (beer can) for $150.00 which will probably out perform it on a A99.
SAR beer can review

Not sure where you may be located, unfortunately in the US an equipment expense is depreciated and a portion can only be taken every year for 6 or so years. So the $3000 of the new 70-200 cannot simply be written off / expensed.
The beercan is good value. I picked up one up for under $100 to have on me while I decide between the new 70-200 (which I’m disappointed about) or an a7r + FE70-200.
Well how do you know 70-200 will be as bad as 18-105? Is this a GUESS site? Or is it a be-as-mean-as-possible site.
Wait a minute!
I can see the 18-105 distortion, but where is the proof that the FE 70-200 f4 has the same distortion?
Please send me a link, either to images you have taken, or others have taken which shows this distortion.
I’m not trolling or trying to incite an argument.
I’m just shocked that I haven’t seen anything about this yet.
Yeah, there is something weird going on. There is no way ANY 70-200mm can have fisheye distortion like that.
No offense Alonso, but I think you might not be telling the whole truth.
Come on. You can tell us. Did you apply distortion in post production?
😛
🙂
focuscamera never had a good track record, it is only up to 300 in credit who know how much they will really give for a camera.
That is insane! I’ve never heard of a lens being that distored, unless it was on purpose. Sony should be ashamed to release something like that to the public. This is starting to be a trend with Sony, deliver garbage and let fanboys tell you everything is going to be already. I’m sure many loyal Sony supporters will come and say there is nothing wrong with such a lens, it’s “design” crap, therefore it’s ok.
Dan
There seems to be a general trend in mirrorless to rely on electronic corrections as we only look through the corrected EVF…:

Note that 2 of the 3 lenses I linked are high end lenses. Btw. these days you have to try surprisingly hard to find people defending Sony stuff, esp. E-mount APS lenses. I actually haven’t seen anyone who actually does. The lineup is rather mediocre and it seems like it will stay that way forever, now that Sony decided to ditch APS for FF.
I recommend the Minolta AF 70-210mm F4 (beer can). Its only $150.00 and leaves you enough money to buy a wireless mic (because the screw drive is slightly motor noisy).
“has a slightly noisy motor”
We will there be a edit feature on this site???
gEEZ… And this is supposed to be a Video lens. Was expecting it to be a winner in the E-mount lineup.. Now I know it’s better to stay away from that crap if I need something for video work.
it seems to me that the A7/A7R does not sell well at all
I wonder if this credit would apply to the $2100 package that includes the flash and lens? If so, that would be insane!
Sony’s giving you a free ‘fisheye’ effect. Why all the complaining? It’s a feature not a bug! 🙂
+1
It looks like the A7 has plenty of excellent primes but the zooms seem to be junk.
It is sad that Sony is investing heavily on the E-Mount line up.
These are the limitations of the E-Mount mechanics due to the short flange distance. The glass arrangements has to compensate for the extreme angles with a small short tube.
If Sony can perfect this, then it will be a unique system capable of using most lenses from other systems.
Right now, only the primes are worth getting for the A7r, every telephoto zoom lens that is native to the FE is kinda junk due to the massive distortions.
If any one has a A7r, go do yourself a favor and but the 55mm Zeiss FE.
If you want to reduce your camera to the same quality level as the A7, then buy the 28-70 FE. If you want an in between then get the slow 24-70 FE.
That’s what I’m thinking too.
I want to have both a full frame A-Mount, and E-Mount.
I’m going to buy the next iteration of the A7r exclusively for its outstanding 55mm prime, its a shame the 35mm is only a f/2.8. Its small, and I can use it for a back-up if the A99 goes down.
I’ll keep the A99 for use with the 24-70mm Zeiss, 70-200mm, 85mm, 135mm STF etc.
Has anyone tested the 24-70mm Zeiss f/2.8, with the A7r.
Better yet, get yourself an E-Mount to Minolta SR Adapter and grab a 50/1.2 or 58/1.2. You’ll have a crazy fast lens, which is sharp stopped down, sharp enough at f/2-2.8 and low light capability down to f/1.2.
I just wish Sony took that design, added modern coatings, and re-engineered it for A-Mount. Its easy to make it A-Mount compatible, since I’ve done it DYI on my 58/1.4 Minolta. AF is another story, but i’m sure it isn’t that hard, considering SSM is a motor that fits around the glass.
I think your right about picking up the adapter so I can use the 58mm f/1.2. I don’t mind manual focus.
I wish Sony would re-release these lens designs for A-Mount, and FE-Mount users.
Stan, good to see that you have good taste in glass.
I do have the 50mm/1.2, and it is brilliantly sharp stopped down 1 stop.
Don’t get me wrong, Adapters are quite decent for the job, I myself have the LA-EA4 for just for the 70-400G lens which turns my A7r into some sort of brilliant abomination.
I am surprised that nobody does a decent review on the LA-EA4 adapter… It truly transforms the A7r in terms of focusing into the A77.
What I am getting at here is that –
Sony has the technology to adapt modules in terms of adapters and their new hot-shoe. THEY NEED TO STOP MAKING 1000 CAMERAS and FOCUS ON IMPROVING THE EXISTING CAMERAS THOUGH A STRONG ECO-SYSTEM.
Though this is most likely impossible, imagine if sony released an adapter that can add OSS to any lenses.
If they can release an adapter that has a variable ND filter, G-ND filter, polorizers etc.
If they can release a hotshoe module for GPS.
If they can release a hotshoe module for an extended battery pack.
If they can convert the wifi to trigger/configure remote flashes.
If they can make an extended battery pack not as large as the vertical grip.
IF THEY WOULD FIX ISSUES THOUGH FIRMWARE UPGRADES…
MAKE THEIR LENSES FIRMWARE UPGRADEABLE.
MAKE THEIR FLASH FIRMWARE UPGRADEABLE.
From what I see, The Focus Camera website does not guarantee you a $300 trade in credit. You tell them what camera you want to trade in, and they email you their offer of credit based upon that.
Unless I am missing something, it seems the credit is variable based upon the camera. You will get a credit, no matter the condition…but it seems like it can vary. Again, perhaps I am missing something…perhaps someone else can verify.
I agree that if one can get the $300 credit stacked with the lens offer then that is a crazy great deal.
I put in mine as a “fauly Sony DSLR” (my NEX-3 shutter died at the end of December) and it quoted me $300.
Still no A-mount news? I give Up…
I gave up a while back. Now i’m just trying to get myself to stop reading SAR a few times per day. I got addicted to it. 🙂
Come on that pic has no straight lines to start with , it’s a pillow! Can we are a pic with straight lines to start with!
Don’t bite the pillow!!!!!
LOL! That was dirty! 🙂
I bought my 1ST A7r from Focus, it was defective. It took them two weeks for them to send me a dead non working camera. At that point I wanted to forget the whole thing, then I saw the Focus warranty and restocking fees and decided it would be better to keep the crappy shutter blue and lossy compression camera than to lose more and more money. I found an alternative to trade the camera in and then sold the new working camera. Focus is a nightmare only exceeded by owning an A7r.
Sony treated it’s customers as guinea pigs.
So you received a faulty camera and instead of trying to return it to the point of sale or try to get the problem taken care of through Sony you went through what sounds like some complicated buy and switch process?
My local shop offered the same deal. No muss, no fuss. And there is no nightmare in owning either the A7 or A7r. I ended up moving from the 7 to the r as I wanted the extra pixels to be able to crop. There are pros shooting these bodies (and I had some photos published only a few days after getting it), and the 55/1.8 is one of the best lenses I’ve ever shot and by many accounts in on-par with M-glass. Depending on what you shoot, one lens can pretty much make a system. Fine not to like the camera – it has its quirks. But it is capable of producing stunning results in a size that is unheard of. If you actually pay attention to what you’re doing. If you treat it like a point and shoot and want jpegs – find another camera.
Is anybody going to try to take advantage of this deal? I went to their website and put in my old broken nikon point and shoot, and it said they would give me $300, but then I looked them up on resellerratings.com and focus has some pretty bad reviews….
