First test video shows how new A7II firmware improves the 5 axis stabilization!

Note: There was an error on the video on my original post. I now updated it with that new video.

This video shows the difference improvement with the 5 axis stabilization with the new 1.10 firmware. The first part of the video shows you the “older” A7II firmware and the second part shows you the A7II with the new 1.10 firmware. The lens he used is the [shoplink 32385 ebay]Minolta MD Tele Rokkor-X 135/3,5[/shoplink].

I have to confess I didn’t expect to see such a big improvement! Now reviewers have to do their A7II test from scratch 🙂

You can download the software here: Sony USA. Soon it will be available also on those pages at Sony Germany, Sony UK, Sony Fance, Sony Italy, Sony Spain, Sony Netherland.

  1. That’s not true. In the first part of the video the stabilization is turned OFF and in the second part is turned ON. At least that’s what it says in the video. It doesn’t show the difference between old and new firmware.

  2. No it doesn’t. This is in Polish, and the first half says “without stabilization”, while the second part shows “with stabilization”.

    1. Please remember to delete all the unnecessary trolLITE reiterations to leave just the truth of photography also, where it is spoken of wisely 😀 and well the groove and the soul so to speak…(ssTM)

      1. Can you stop spamming? You are annoying and don’t know anything about anything. Please stop writing “XD” too

          1. Sorry, but i don’t want to buy what you advise JUST because i feel obliged to, only to save a few pounds!

          2. You are the only troll here with your sony sony hulk ben nerd whatever crap fakers, why don’t you just piss off back the orphanage you escaped from.

          3. As a word of advice, stick to talking at him rather than to him. I notice he has tried to get my attention a few times, I can barely understand his illiterate gibberish though. There was someone else that posted with the name bob so maybe he had the misfortune of meeting this illiterate fool.

There’s a flag symbol by his name, perhaps you can help by reporting him? Thanks

    1. Too much movement, you should try to hold it steady by hand and follow a subject as if you were actually recording a video. The IBIS is meant to correct for small shakes while hand holding. Jerking it up down and side to side does not demonstrate the effectiveness of the IBIS.

    2. I notice detail is drastically reduced when panning, which annoys me about the video from the Olympus EM5. Does the A7II do this as well with the XAVC-S 50 Mbps codec?

  3. Yeah we know it’s awesome and I want it. Listen, can some one please freaking help me out here. If I’m shooting in manual with flash on the A7- how do I get the EVF to brighten up in dark situations. Like, I have to turn it back to Aperature Priority to brighten the damn thing up which is stupid. How do you over ride this?

    1. Because you had to ask, and how you asked, please refrain from any future posts where you give your opinion about anything. Thank you.

      1. That’s ridiculous, it’s not a setting that’s used often and is easy to forget. The menus have a multitude of options to chose from. I have it programmed into one of my stored settings (along with other features) for use with studio strobes.

    2. You need to turn exposure preview off. Don’t have the camera handy right now to give you the setting. Then your VF only shows things as if you were looking through an OVF. Bad thing: histogram is not working right anymore.
Edit: Sorry, you were helped out already, saw it only later.

  4. It’s a damn shame that sony fails to get it right the first time – lots of ppl hv read the reviews and decided that the IBIS is not that effective after all. Now we are going to have to spend months in forums/review sites convincing ppl otherwise

    1. Who cares, don’t waste your time trying to convince trolls. This information is all over the internet already, so unless they live in a cave they already know.

  5. Grrrr SR4 and still no sign at ALL of that Medium Format Interchangeable camera! my palms are getting sweated :I

  6. Look, I know this is keen. And bravo Sony… But honestly, the old a900 is phenomenal for IBIS, SSS, or whatever you want to call it. I can easily handhold the Mino 200/2.8 at 1/20th SS without reserve. It’s better than the a99/77 series. And the a900 has the motion bars in the viewfinder that allow user to see optimum stabilization. Would be great to get the motion bars back for EVF cameras.

      1. Trying to fix one fail with another fail is one thing,
Repeating the whole sorry exercise rather than learning from said mistake is quite another…

  7. Update was on the 8th of January and they still have their xmas tree up??!! I have actually tried it with the new firmware and it seems great! Jitter free!

  8. I am trying to understand if the Sony IBIS is really worth it but I cannot judge from comments here. It seems that some people praise Sony for whatever it offers. The first part(firmware 1.0) doesn’t look stabilized to me at all but people, here, were happy about how effective the IBIS was from the beginning. Can somebody please share his/her honest opinion regarding IBIS?

    1. I was happy with my canon gear except its size and a few tiny gripes. I’m as far from a fanboy as you can get. I’m aware of sony’s shortcomings, etc. For example their flash system is useless. That said, nearly all stabilization methods these days are useful and do save shots. There might be a day you’re slightly jittery or you simply press the button too hard introducing shake into the camera. I wouldn’t consider it a reason to upgrade cameras but it is a good feature. It does what it says really

    2. I had the OMD EM1 before as secondary system, now the A7ii to accompany my Nikon FFs. When using the 60mm (120mm FOV) macro on the Oly I could gain about 4 stops at normal shooting distances, 1-2 at macro distances. Now I use the A7ii since christmas. When mounting the 135/1.8 with adapter it can use the 5-“axis” ibis. I manage to get down to about 1/15s to get consistently sharp pictures, 1/150s-1/200s usually without IBIS, depending on body position. So on average 3-4 stops. With manual lens I only reach 2-3 stops advantage (3-“axis”). So I find it very useful, not as good as the Oly, but 0.5-1 stop worse. Could be myself having to adjust, since I’m improving.

      1. What I am concerned about is the IBIS built quality. In general, the concept of having a floating sensor inside the body scares me a little bit considering the saving Sony did with the original A7 lens mount. How was your experience with Oly? Is IBIS built to last or it serves for a limited period of time. I am also curious to know if the 135/1.8 gets 5-axis stabilization with the LAEA3. I am not willing to loose light by using the LAEA4 adapter.

        1. I’d rather have my body fail and get replaced than my lens fail and have to be replaced. If I were you I’d be more worried about OSS.

  9. Tried to find the firmware on the Danish Sony site, but no, not there yet 🙁
Why is Sony always late in some markets ?
Just spoke to Sony Support, telling me NOT to use any of the other available firmware´s, fx. England, but to wait for Sony DK to wake up…..
Bad, as i have seen clear problems with steady shot in video, making the videos useless, in need of a fix…..

      1. Same here. Language in cam stays the same. No differences. Got FW from sony-asia.com. Even the installer was in german.

    1. Run them through software. It should fix it and become usable unless your original footage was a fail in the first place.

  10. This is impressive! It really sells the IBIS feature now. It just didn’t seem “all that” before but now it definitely seems worthwhile. Bring on the Sony a7r ii with IBIS!
