First Sony 90mm FE unboxing reports. Review at SLRgear.

Sony SEL 90mm Macro UNBOXING

The [shoplink 37991 ebay]90mm FE lens is now shipping[/shoplink] and readers are no posting their first unboxing pics and tests. Feel free to comment this post and add your findings and links about the new FE lens!

UPDATE: There is a full lens review at SLRgear. They write:

It’s a pricey lens, but right now it’s the only E-mount option that works out-of-the-box for macro photography. It might be expensive, but you get an exceptionally sharp lens with some great features – certainly, worth the investment.

Round Planet (Source: AlphaDXD) sent me this pic: “Just received my brand new Sony 90mm F2.8 in France; a couple of photos and initial feelings on this link: http://www.alphadxd.fr/viewtopic.php?f=158&t=101471”

Robbert: “Today I got the new Sony 90mm f2.8 macro. Some shots are on my flickr account: https://www.flickr.com/photos/robbertvw/”

Mars: “I was very fortunate to be able to shoot with the new 90mm macro lens tonight.  It’s very sharp, and renders beautifully. It’s also much lighter than it looks. All-in-all a beautiful piece of glass! Some images can be found at my blog site: https://marsweekly.wordpress.com/ (all are portraits shot wide-open with the 90mm and a few other lenses)”

Discussion: Sony 90mm Macro, or Zeiss 85 Batis, which will you be more likely to get? On SonyAlphaForum.

  1. My favorite part of buying something is taking it out of the box, after that I usually get pretty bored with it quickly if I use it at all. Love these videos…

  2. I like the focus ring on this particular lens. For me I need the hard stops on those rings, otherwise it just feels wrong.
That’s the main advantage this macro lens has over the Batis in my opinion. I just can’t deal with the type of Focus ring that is going into the Batis.

The only real weakness this lens has is the small aperture.

      1. Yes its focus by wire, but it has focus markings, so you’ll know exactly where you are focussing.

        1. I’ll wait and see how they implement it because Sony focus by wire accelerate or decelerate feature, means it doesn’t actually have fixed focus marking as it depends on how fast or slow the user turns the focus ring.

          1. That’s stupid assumption. Just because the Focus ring use electric signals doesn’t necessarily mean it has acceleration. Accelerated focus ring is something you can design your lens with, as well as something you can design your lens without.

        2. Of course electronics is cheaper but I would insist on proper mechanical coupling for MF implementation. If Tokina can, Sony should be able too!

    1. Just took a look at your samples with the 90 f2,8 and compared it to the 135 f1,8 and I’m very glad I did. I was just about ready to order the 90 but it doesn’t hold a candle to the 135. I sold my copy of the 135, and while I don’t really regret it I’m hopeful that Sony will come out with a MkII. Love the files!

        1. Yes, each camera brand/series typically has at least one standout lens that nearly everyone will agree to, and the 135 for the A-Mount is definitely it. The only reason I sold mine was because it was so damn heavy so it was used primarily around the home. However, if they do come out with a MkII I’m pretty sure I would buy it. In fact, I had no intention of signing up for the A7 series until I saw several files and reviews with the Sony/Zeiss 35 f1,4. This particular lens I believe will be the stand out against all others, or at least so far. My copy of that lens is sleeping in my ThinkTank Navigator until I receive A7xx.

  3. HELP! On a unstable cardbox? and he’s Swiss? Where’s his duty of precision and safety?!
I’ll gonna hit him next time I’m in lucerne! 🙂

  4. If anyone from SLRGear.com reads this… better review your camera info… Here’s a quote from your SEL90M28G test: “Sony includes its OSS (“Optical Steady Shot”) image stabilization technology in the lens. While the NEX series of camera includes sensor-shifting image stabilization, the A7 series of camera does not, so image stabilization is possible regardless of the platform. ” When did the IBIS get into the NEX bodies? Did I forget to turn it on all these years??? 😉

  5. I agonised over this lens for months – end results are very promising, but the price in the UK is obscene. In the end I ordered an a7ii and a Tamron 90/2.5… I’ll offset my a7 against the a7ii and the Tamron will be a straight swap for my FD 50/3.5, so it’s much cost effective than dropping over £1,000 on the 90/2.8.

  6. While this one appears to be corporate/business based, all these individual “unboxing” how quickly they returned them for a refund to clear funds for the next “unboxing” video. It seems like they just like to hear themselves talk and create some video seo for their channel. The actual product is only a tool to do it and with proper management can do it for free. Essentially, order, do the video, return within the allowed return period, and the refund clears the credit card within the billing cycle. Repeat.

  7. I caught that too and looked for a place to comment or contact them. Ironic since only the A7 series has bodies with IBIS of E mount cameras (only 2 of the 5, but still more than the 0 of all the NEX series)

  8. Well, it is only 10% more expensive than canon 100mm L f2.8 macro. Now, wait for more samples and compare iq, then say that again.

  9. Depends on the lens. The 55/1.8 is pricey compared to Canon or Nikon’s nifty fifties, but it’s about the same price as the Sigma and significantly cheaper than the Otus

  10. Not All.
Best example is SAL1650, which outperforms Canon and Nikon equivalents, and yet is about 1/3rd cheaper.

Another one is SEL55F18, which is L class glass, at half the price of a Canon 50/1.4 L, but yes, 2/3rd of a stop slower. Although due to that it is smaller and lighter, which is needed for E-Mount system. We rarely ever shoot FF at 1.4 anyways anymore.
SEL70200, is approximately the same price as the other F4 equivalents. It’s only about 1/6th to 1/10th more than equivalent DSLR lenses, with performance being on par with others in class.

Yes, there are some that are more expensive, and it is not known whether the extra price is worth what the lens has to offer, like SAL70200GII and others.

Sony is right in the same price league overall with Canikon. Some lenses being cheaper, others more expensive. The major problem is that there are not enough options to be compared within the same focal length.
