(SR5) First picture of the Fulll Frame E-mount VG-900!

This is the first image of the first E-mount Full Frame camera! It’s actually a camcorder to be correct, the new VG-900. Click on the picture to view the full size version. It finally proves that a FF sensor indeed fits into an E-mount. And I was considered as a crazy guy when I told you this was coming… 🙂
Like the A99 and RX1 the camera uses a new 24 Megapixel sensor. Records video in AVCHD 2.0. Price around $3300 with new Full Frame A-mount adpater included!

P.S.: What if Sony would do some math and resolve the following equation: VG900+RX1= X    -> end of the Leica M series? 🙂

  1. Interesting. I wonder if it’s going to be a full A99 in a camcorder form factor?

If so, could be an interesting choice for someone (like me) who is planning on buying an a99, but shoots a lot of movies but also has a lot of FF CZ glass….

Guess you’d have to buy the LA3 adapter or something for the A mount glass.

    1. This is a film camera and when filming in widescreen 16:9 or 2.35:1, the top and bottom of the frame is cut off and then there is no cutoff corners 😉

The rays from the lens is not parallel anyway, so it will work with stills too.
sony must have taken the possibility to use e-mount with FF into account when designing it, so it must definitively work with FF stills as well.

    2. Just the view cuts the corners, but the corners are there! The light never has to touch the edges of the emount ring, so can of course reach the sensor corners! That’s basic technical/photographical knowledge…

      1. Will it be possible to use an E-Mount to Canon EF Adaptor to use Canon lenses on this without it vignetting? I know you can do it on the Sony NEX VG-20. It already looks like the sensor is pretty deep in the camera and touching the edges. I wouldn’t buy it if it wasn’t possible. To me it’s not worth buying all new lenses just for this camera…

    1. Hey guys, I have a VG900 and I bought a fotodiox adapter to use my Canon lenses on it and indeed there is vignetting on most of the lenses I tried..even at wide open. So metabones and fotodiox etc will have to engineer new ones for this unique cam

      1. i think main NEX-9 problem right now – lack of FF nex lenses. thats why they just tease us with whats you gonna have in 2 years when we will see FF nex lenses.

          1. hope sony release the crappiest kit lens with the nex9ff!! just get that camera out there released! no one will be using the crap kit lens anyways. all 3rd party adapted lenses dying for wait the ff nex!

  2. Good morning Andrea from Vancouver Island!
    A
    BIG
DAY on the rise for SONY….
I hope there will be more surprise from Sony – with fast A-mount lenses!! And announcement of Firmware 2. for a77 !!!

      1. Don’t forget a first firmware update on the Nex7.
Although I love Sony for being a technology pandora, it is ridiculous that they leave their loyal customers flat regarding FW upgrades.

There are some issues as well for the a77 as for the NEX7 (just mention a ldesired lock function for the crappy placed movie button) and what are they doing? Nothing.

The FW 2.0 for my a900 took them 2 years…

        1. Yes, very unfortunate indeed.
Come on SONY, make us BELIEVE!

Minus us, you doesn’t belong…to camera world, don’t you realize that??

          The sooner, the better… 🙂

        2. The A900 firmware did not have any flaws. The 2.0 upgrade was only extra functionality, no “fixing”. That is amazing. I hope the A99 is perfect from start 🙂

  3. I must have missed something. Is this LA3 adapter new and what is improved over the LEA2 adaptor. Get those links ready for preorders.

    1. LA-EA3 will have a SLT-mirror that covers FF. Wit the LA-EA2 the image will be cropped on a FF NEX.

LA-EA1 will probably work fine and if the new on-sensor PDAF works well it would be a possible choice.

      1. LA-EA1 will probably not work. Although it doesn’t have the translucent mirror, it crops the image at APS-C boundaries.

LA-EA3 will probably wider than current LA-EA1/2 because of the additional ‘stuff’ that needs to be placed outside the whole mount space.

    1. Not necesarilly, with the exception of ultra long tele lenses. Try to imagine the trajectory of the light from the rear element of a lens to the sensor.
By the way, Hellven, do you still insist that the FF Nex will never happen? 🙂

  4. I wonder how the final image looks. Not a fan of the VG series so far. But maybe the FF look changes that…
About the cut corners: Maybe they get by that through some sort of special sensor read out…?

    1. Hard to say at the moment,..but I “think” it will cover OK because the light will project at an angle “after” the mount lock?

In other words,..it’s not a straight light path but a “cone” spread.

Hell, I dunno really. The mount is very very close to sensor.

  5. Holy CRAP! It’s real?

Without a mirror, this camera might be Sony’s highest quality imaging device in their current lineup. (in theory, it should even edge out the A99 too!)

    WOW!

  6. Strange… Seems the sensor is bigger than the mount (corners crpped)
Perhaps they do not care as they crop heavilly in video mode for stabilisation.

    1. The Exakta camera mount was much smaller than the 24x36mm film size, and much smaller than E-mount. No corner cutoff.

The diagonal of 24×36 is 43mm. Leica thread is 39mm, so again smaller.

Light spreads out from the back of the lens.

The only lenses that might cut off are very long focus non-telephoto lenses, such as the old Novoflex follow-focus. And a bit of cropping on a 500mm lens is not fatal.

      1. But then, the mounts you named have much longer flange distances than the E-mount, so the angles at which the light rays come in would have been very different.

  7. @ all the “omg the corners are cut off!!!1!!” comments:

Take your lens off your camera. Look at the back side. You’ll see the rear lens element. You’ll also see a lot of metal and plastic…

If you pay attention, you’ll notice that the rear element is much MUCH smaller than the lens mount.

  8. The RX1 and VG900 is here just to showcase how the future NEX will be like, I think its really Sony stalling some time for people to stop buying camera from competitors because they are giving hints of what they will come out in the future. Just make it fast Sony. A full frame mirrorless will definitely shake the balance in the interchangeable lens industry. =)

  9. Notice how much bulkier the body is around the lens mount compared to the VG30 posted earlier? Looks to be quite a bit bigger than the other VG cameras, though still smaller than other pro camcorders. Can’t wait to see other views and specs and of course real world test videos. The new VG’s and the A99 might make me ditch the Fs100 and 5d2 – might. It’ll be interesting to see how this stacks up against the A99, because outside of form factor that looks like a better option at the moment.

  10. All we may be seeing is that the corners of the *cover glass* are cut off. The cover glass is usually a fair bit bigger than the sensor itself.

That still doesn’t look like a real image though, or a real sensor behind the glass. Fingers crossed, though, for this and for the NEX-9.

  11. It looks like an alien ship from Star Trek: TOS. Klingoncam! Seriously, kudos to Sony for bringing out all these unique products.

  12. Brilliant combination, Full frame and E-mount.
Only possible problem for huge succes could be the absence of ND filters.
    I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
P.S. Clicking on the picture doesn’t help to get it full-size.

  13. the edges of that ring is too inconsistent. i’ll call this shopped. someone took the image from the known a99 image circle and pasted an emount ring in it.

  14. Brilliant combination, Full frame and E-mount.
Only possible problem for huge succes could be the absence of ND filters.
    I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
P.S. Clicking on the picture doesn’t help to get it full-size.

  15. Actually, the most interesting point for me will be the next generation of the LA-EA adapters (LA-EA3?). Will it come together with the VG-900?

  16. I think it’s a hoax too! A camera titled VG900 wouldn’t look like a VG10/20.
As I said, hopefully with ND filters.

  17. im already sold on the A99, but i also hope that there is a fw update for the A77. Tomorrow is gonna be a good day 🙂

  18. Interesting. And $3300 is right about the price of the Canon 5D III. I know that’s not the intended market, but could this maybe be the better choice for the hybrid photographer/videographer?

  19. In a camera which does 16:9 and 4:3 the corners of the sensor are never used in either mode. Hopefully it will also do 3:2. But that sill leaves a little bit of corner never used. So even with a fairly parallel light path this make work.

  20. By the way,
I became a big fan these last months of your site. You are doing a great job, especially these last weeks!
Thank you for all your effort! Keep it up!

  21. Ok, maybe i’m dreaming, but.. What if the camera have a removable E-mount ring and behind is the A-mount in the body?

Something like the LA-EA2 but to permit to use E-mount lenses on A-mount camera, i know there’s crop applied to this but for video i think it can work.

  22. Hello everybody from France. I think that in pure photography, a Nex Full Frame with E-mount is just … Uninteresting. Waiting for a new “Z”-mount (Like ZM? 😛 )

  23. Andrea, you are crazy. You’ve been confined to a mental institution since February. The past seven month is nothing more than your imagination.

Oh, and your name is Bill and this is a m4/3 FF. 😀

  24. Though the real camera may actually look like this, I call hoax too. Click on the larger image, the area around the lens mount is clearly a rendering, no texture like the handle below the mics and its a completely different color. Someone got clever with photoshop but forgot the clone tool.

    FAKE!!!!!!!!

Open the VG900 image and the VG30 image from the previous post and tab between them, its the same image.

      1. I’m not saying the camera doesn’t look like this – as I stated. IMHO, this image looks like a rendering, the face looks like it was painted in with photoshop. There is absolutely no texture or depth around the lens mount – its not real, or some of it has been intentionally covered.

I’m very much looking forward to the official announcement. My FS100’s days are numbered, I’m just waiting to see samples and full specs/accessories from the A99, the VG900 and the VG30 to decide which direction I want to go. I may pop for a RX1 as well if the street price is closer to $2000.

Thanks for your efforts. Can’t wait to check tomorrow morning with coffee in hand and read about all the new Sony cameras.

  25. Years ago I too have said there will be a full frame nex, now here is the proof. ALL HAIL the nex 9 in twelve months time.
The only biggest issue for a full frame nex is the focus system, rx 1 is to be the test bed for that system.

  26. I have the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 for my a700, curious how the lens would work with the sensor on this camera? I was previously going to buy the VG-20, but am awaiting all the new cameras. 🙂

    1. The camerawould probably recognise that lens & go into ‘crop mode’. Even if you covered the pins or the camera doesn’t go into a crop modeyou will run into issues as that lens doesn’t cover a full-frame sensor resulting in black corners (not just a little vignetting – quite a harsh transition to thoroughly black areas) at all focal lengths.

Been there, tried that lens on full frame, doesn’t work.

  27. I don’t think the high end imagers will be endangered by these products as they will retain an IQ advantage because they don’t have AA filters.

    1. 4K? Not at $3300. The FS700 4K upgrade hasn’t even been released yet, no way they drop a 4k camera at less than half the price of the FS.

      1. I agree. 4k means a very high data rate, and the electronics for that are still too expensive for a camera in this price range.

In a year or two, maybe. Things are moving fast.

  28. Hmmm…
    E mount lenses are stabilzed
A mount lenses are not stbilized (IBIS)

What about that the ea-la3 being the part in charge of the stabilisation…
    Is that technicall possible?

    1. That would be cool. stabilisation is the only thing missing from this system. They could also do digital stabilisation with a slight crop I suppose.

    2. Many Sigma lenses in alpha mount have image stabilization. I use the Sigma 17-50 OS HSM and 70-200 OS HSM as an alternative to the kit lens when under low light (I can get f3.5 out of them with the LA-EA2). I wish Sigma would make the 120-300 OS HSM in alpha mount, but you can only find it in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mount.

  29. Looks like Photokina should be renamed Sonykina!

I’m sure this will be a nice video camera but wish they’d get away from AVCHD.

  30. Do you know if this camera shoots at a higher data rate than the previous NEX cams (24mbits)? I would HOPE that it would shoot at 50mbits. Would really like to use a camera like this for broadcast data rates.

      1. We did see rendered pictures of the NEX-7 before it was properly announced, and they turned out to be quite accurate. So even if this is a render, it is probably quite close to the real thing.

  31. Love where Sony is taking the NEX Aps to FF and in both compact and camcorder flavours from both entry level to pro level.

They’re leaving the competiton behind, late and confused.

If they can do this well in the DSLR business with comparible lenses to Canon then Canon will suffer along with other players.

Hope to see a 4K Nex Camcorder in a few years; question I’m still asking is the storage medium required to store the large campacity 4k Video…

    1. not only the competition, but consumers are also confused. how many cameras have we seen from sony since the FS700? what is going on?

  32. Now you can clearly see that there will be no full-frame NEX camera. The sensor does not fit in the E-mount without cropping. They can get away with it for video, but not for still photos.

  33. Sorry to say but this looks like a FAKE. The sensor is unrealistically close to the mount. The light of the body does not match the light on the mic. The light on the metal part of the mount is not distributed the same way as it is on the body.

  34. It will be afternoon here in Australia when the Sony box opens. What the hell am I going to do all day?…Probably start kissing my “old” gear goodbye!!

  35. Although the VG-900 might become real, the image is obviously a fake. Someone simply pasted a rendering of a photoshopped front on top of the VG-30 image you see on the left. Open these two links and tab between them: http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj524/picrumors/Bildschirmfoto2012-09-11um081017.png, http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj524/picrumors/vg900.jpg.

Andrea, I love your site, but people will not take you seriously if you give SR5 to photoshopped fakes.

  36. Well, even when there is FF Nex, it won’t end Leica M series as it’s Sony who will sell them the sensor in the future, and Sony will of course protect their client’s interest!
