Sony officially announced that the new NEX-3/5 firmware will come on June 20th!
“A firmware upgrade (Version 4) adds the new ‘Picture Effect’ function to existing NEX-5 and NEX-3 cameras. It also adds a Peaking function to assist with more precise manual focusing. This upgrade will be available June 20thand can be downloaded from: (www.esupport.sony.com). ”

And so for the A33/55:
“Available beginning June 20th, a firmware update for existing α33 and α55 cameras adds several creative and operational enhancements. Support for the ‘Picture Effect’ function featured on the new α35 model is now offered. High-Speed Synch is supported during wireless operation with a compatible external flash (α55 only). Ergonomics are further improved with revised menus and a new mode that lets users switch shooting parameters overlaid on-screen for clear, uncluttered composition. Frequently used features can now be custom-assigned to the D-RANGE button for rapid, menu-free access.“

      1. I really don’t understand, the VG 10 is the only “official” video camera on the nex line up (menus the fs100…) and the peaking will not be available for it!!! This is madness!!
        THIS IS SOOOONYYY!!!

  1. I hope Sony can include more shortcuts for the center key instead of only 3 but looks like this is not happening in FW ver. 4…. At least should have 4 or max 5… more than 5 will not be “short” enough for “shortkey” then…

  2. Am I reading this right?

I’ve been following SAR every day, I don’t remember reading a firmware update was on the way for a33/55. I was about to buy a Olympus XZ-1 as a fun camera for the picture effects, I could stick with my a55 if the picture effects are in the future firmware.
    Happy days!

    1. Has any manufacturer faked a tilt shift effect. I saw it on iPhone via an app, not sure about the digital camera market.

  3. How about a fix for the dim-viewfinder when using a remote trigger for strobes? (a55)
Is that included with the firmware update?

    1. I would like to know that too. They at least fixed “something” (it seems HSS with wireless flash for the A55). It would be a shame to do all this and at the same time not fix the dim-viewfinder bug.

    1. Both of those cameras also have manual control while shooting video, better battery life, and no overheating problems.

      grrrrrrrr.

      1. Can you try recording a thirty minute clip continously on the 60D or the D5100 (or longer)? That’s thirty minutes uninterrupted. That would be a phenomenal achievment if these cameras have that capability.

        1. No, but I can record all day without having to take my camera into the AC every 20 minutes with either of those cameras. That and my image stabilization would work.

  4. One of my biggest problems, with the a55 firmware so far was, that you can not access most jpeg only modes if the camere is set to take raw pictures. Having to go into the menue and change that setting is annoying , but as it turned out for me, most annoying is the fact that you will most likely forget to set it back.
I used the a55 while traveling for a couple of months, and about a third of my pictures was jpeg only :-).
I know that I could have paid a bit more attention, but I think if I set the camera raw shooting a simple warning that The camera will only record the next picture in jpeg would have done the trick, but instead I must dig into the menue and then make sure I dont forget to revisit the menue afte lets ay taking an AutoHDR picture.
They should just leave the raw settings turned on and fall back to jpeg if the mode used requires it an continue to shoot raw if it does not.

  5. I know it wasn’t said but I am really hoping Pictbridge will be hiding in the updates, would really like that option since it exists in most cameras.

Also what happened to the 720 60fps option? Upon looking through initial reviews from test cameras the option was there originally then pulled from the camera.

So those two updates would be really awesome if not the 720 60fps at least a simple Pictbridge option.

  6. Well, I just read that the NEX 5 update is not necessary if you already have 2.0 or higher. I have 3.0, which means I already have 3D Panorama, which is what the update fuss was all about. I thought they were coming out with filters and such via firmware. I’m disappointed.
