Michael Gorman from Engadget (Click here) posted the A7-A7r “shooting review” and writes:
“These are Sony’s two finest mirrorless cameras I’ve ever used, and while they are priced at a premium level, they deliver premium results.
and…
“Shooting performance in sunny, cloudy and nighttime environments was excellent. I’d never profess to being a pro photographer, but both the 7 and 7R make it fairly easy to take really good photos. All that resolution also means that, should your framing be a bit off, you’ll still have plenty of pixels left should you need to crop some out. And as for the difference in megapixel count between the two cameras? Well, you’ll hardly notice unless you really blow up the resulting pictures. The level of detail produced by both cameras is outstanding, and despite the lack of a low-pass filter on the 7R, we saw none of the moiré effect such a filter is meant to eliminate.”

No shit.
Priced at a premium level?? We’ll hardly notice the difference in resolution? Seriously!
Hahaha! Exactly! I never thought Engadget was a cheap site.
That sounds great!
Can anyone tell me what lens is sitting on the camera in the picture? It looks pretty sweet…
It’s the Voigtlander 35/1.4 Classic
The comments about the kit lens are disappointing. Others have said the opposite; that it wa surprisingly good for a kit lens. Here’s hoping their confirmation bias kicked in with that assessment rather than a detailed analysis.
Hopr the nee a mount is mirroless or at least capable of autofocus with the slt mirror flipped up.
“Bigger is definitely better”
> Why do they use this headline for the smallest Full-Frame cameras? Confusing
“These are Sony’s two finest mirrorless cameras I’ve ever used,”
> Surprise surprise, really Sony’s finest?
“…and while they are priced at a premium level, they deliver premium results.”
> premium level? YOu could call it a bargain for the results and quality you get in this small package.
Sorry, I used to look at engadet when I was still a young tech geek, but I can’t tak them for full in doing proper camera reviews. I better wait for Steve Huff’s review in about 1 or 2 weeks.
Hans, they are referring to the sensor size.
I understand that, but it’s confusing. Ah let’s forget it, worthless “review”
It’s whats inside that matters, baby. It’s all in the inside.
Not Sony Finest, but Sony MIRRORLESS finest. Which is too obvious.
Worst photography I’ve seen yet, maybe you guys should have hired a professional who could handle this camera. A7 whisper-quiet, are you kidding me? Can’t believe this guy is qualified to write about photo equipment.
Anybody knows what lens is on the camera in the picture?
Well, at least he doesn’t need a tripod, 12 hours of sleep and earthquake proof building to shot “in focus’, “no blur” photos like some other reviewers.
Amen to thaf
It’s a tech site, the people who reviewed probably doesn’t have years of photography experience and knowledge to begin with. So far the only 2 reviews that are worth mentioning for me is Steve Huff and Frank Doorhof.
Classic comment No.1 : $1000 for a 50 1.8? TOTAL RIPOFF!
No.2: Sony makes toys, Canon and Nikon are for pros!
No.3:They’ll be skimping on lens again, like what they did to the alpha mount.
…which Sony has never done
No.1 55mm F1.8 not 50F1.8 is Carl Zeiss not crappy L lens.
No.2 Sony makes innovation . Canon makes crappy and Nikon is customer of Sony.
No.3 A mount lens has good lens with Carl Zeiss. but Canon L lens is crappy suck 24-70 L I.
If you have no money, please stay on Canon.
Regardless, aren’t you impressed by the image quality? If canon and nikon are so great, check the forums, they are all crying over the a7r!
Might be a stupid question… But what lenses are those surrounding the A7R in the main photo?
From left to right:
CV 21/1.8 (middle left)
CV 12/5.6 (front left)
CV 75/1.8 (rear left)
CV 35/1.2 (center)
CV 15/4.5 (front right)
CV 50/1.1 (rear right)
CV 40/1.4 (middle right)
CV 35/1.4 (on camera)
CV doesn’t offer a 100 mm (or equivalent) portrait lens?? Bummer, they sure look lovely!
There is the 90mm f3.5 APO-lanthar. But it is not really a “portrait” lens since the aperture is quite small for the focal length…more of a street/scenery lens.
Why does the pictures on engadet terrible?
lens on camera looks like voighlander 35mm 1.4
“These are the finest Sony’s mirrorles cameras ever.”
Are they just stating the obvious? Finest Sony’s camera would be nice, but finest mirrorless?
What’s out there? Nex7? Nex 6? RX1? even the top Sony Haters will admit A7 is better than these cameras.
These are the finest Sony’s mirrorless cameras ever.” …Yeah, until six months later the Sony bossman decides to make something different because his rich Leica collecting friends decide they want something else. One thing about Sony is you should never like anything they make too much, chances are, the next model will not only look different, have different button lay out, but be a different style of camera altogether. You give customers no security and they shall give you no loyalty in return, Sony.
Do you care? I don’t. It’s the price of ongoing innovation.
Innovation? Is that what you call innovation? A camera that has a full frame sensor and no mirror? They had plenty of those in the no so long ago film days..they were call point and shoot cameras or rangefinders. Goodness if that is innovation then I can’t wait till they make an ” electronic viewfinder “. Of course, back then it was on video cameras and they called them ” video displays”. Everything Sony has done in the camera industry has been done. Dslrs, done. Dslts’ Done- see Canon Pellix. Full frame cameras-donne. Cameras with no mirrors, done since the 40’s. you are not paying for innovation, just variations of what was done before.
Yes, a nice story Zohan, maybe you should enlighten some of the other manufactures, because I don’t see to many full frame mirrorless camera models around at the moment.
FF mirrorless? does FF mirrorless cameras shoot photos that are entirely different from any other kind of FF camera? Wowy, a FF mirrorless camera! Now with that I can go and shoot pictures no one can! How special. And if Sony were to make a medium format mirrorless camera it would mean it’s new too! and then after that they can make a sensor larger than medium format and make it without a mirrorbox and wwy, a new camera never been done before! i guess every picture you take with your FF mirrorless camera cannot be done with any run of the mill FF dslr. I got news for you in ce you dont understand sarcasm or logic. Taking something out of something isnt new tech, its called, subtraction. Your FF mirrorless has one big BIG problem. It has NO optical viewfinder, instead, they give you a crap tiny lcd they call a electronic viewfinder. And yes, please tell Sony to catch up with other, add a mirrorbox in their camera because taking something away doesnt mean technical achievement. Maybe Sony will take away the sensor and and put film back in for you, that way you can have an even thinner camera and something new to show your friends. LOL
I see. You are one of those for whom innovation is invention and design is eye candy.
Taking something useful like an OVF is NOT innovation…stop dreaming. You can delude yourself all you want, but you sure as heck are not convincing the buying public or the pros.
“taking something OUT” like the ovf….
I reckon you’re happy with your flapping mirror, and sure, why not. I think the mirror is a relic of old days, soon to be abandoned by all camera manufacturers. Another relic? The mechanical shutter. Old school in a few years, IF a company like Sony is allowed to innovate and finds interested consumers. Innovation can’t be expected from the big ones, they’re too busy consolidating. And yes, when that means every innovation brings us a slightly different, but better camera, I’m in. You’re not, and you’re not on your own. That’s fine by me. That you’re FUDding, it’s probably not even your intention.
Relic of the old days? You’re right, cameras with NO mirrors like the Leica came long before the slr.
second, flapping mirrors I like. You must enjoy no flaaping mirror and no viewfinder. Wait, you would rather pay extra to get an extra smaller lcd you call an “EVF”, right?
Face the facts, there are only so many ways you can make a camera. A camera using a rangeifinder- DONE. A camera using mirrors- DONE. A camera using no mirrors and no rangefinders- DONE. A camera using a “pellicle ” mirror- DONE.
The cameras may look the same outside but inside film & image sensor are totally different technologies, you failed to even understand this very basic difference. Till date only Leica and Sony have FF sensor in this compact size body, and look at the prices, if you don’t call this innovative then what is? Empty vessels make the loudest noise, those who talk big usually know nothing.
The Zohan wrote:
“Face the facts, there are only so many ways you can make a camera.”
And your “facts” are that there are only FOUR ways to do a camera?
You have to belong among the most ignorant posters here.
I own the Canon Pellix, and I have used the Sony A77 extensively. I can assure you that these two cameras most certainly are NOt made the same way. There is a world between them! The Pellix had only a few advantages compared with other cameras at that time, but in most other respects added a lot of drawbacks. Accordingly, the selling wasn’t great and the production was ceased a number of times until finally dropped all together, which I assume you know(?) For the A77/A99 it is the other way around in usability – they display much advantages and many functions and possiblilities not available from any other camera manufacturer, and 0 to perhaps 2 drawbacks (depending on your shooting style).
The only thing in common between Pellix and A77/A99 is that both are using beam splitters (with its many drawbacks), which by the way Canon Pellix was NOT the first to use, as you seem to believe. The SLT cameras aren’t even using a pellicle film, as many seem to believe, but a Thin Plate Beamsplitter instead.
To make a long story short – Pellix was the first still camera to use a beam splitter, but it was certainly not particularily usable for general photography. With A77/A99 it is the other way around.
But I assume you haven’t used these cameras, or any of them?
.
Oooooooooooooooo…so technical. They’re the same principle, man. You car has tired just like my car has tires, even if the tread looks different or if the rubber on your tires was made in Malaysia and mine are made in Indonesia. I assume you have no common sense, like most of these folks here? I guess according to your logic the nex7 is a different camera to the A7 as well, because one uses FF sensor and the other doesn’t? LOL. I gotta love folks like you…without you guys, there would be no lawyers in this world. Now you have shown me that there are 5 ways to make a camera. Would you like to find the difference between a slr and a dslr too? Thanks for the laugh, though.
> Sony’s two finest mirrorless cameras
Why not finest mirrorless cameras of any brand?
Why not finest cameras of any brand? Any format?
Hi all,
anyone tested the A mount adapter for 7r?. I own a bunch of Zeiss lenses for my A-55 and I would like to know if I can use them on this new beast.
Do you think it’s better to get an A-99 body? I don’t shot sport photos but portraits.
regards
Just wait for the LAEA4 reviews. I haven’t tested it, but it should perform similar to how adapters performed on earlier NEX models. Which was basically just fine.
Well, as of this writing, A99 is outdated & you could get an A7r for a lower price. If you are interested in a Full Frame A Mount, you could also wait till Jan 2014. As per the rumors, they should be updating the SLT Lineup.
Engadget, huh?
I’m waiting for the Walmart High Performance Camera Guide to review it before I commit.
AF lenses will alway be BIG …
Stop whining! More people read Engadget than almost any site that has tested A7 so far!
This is good for Sony and good for Sony lovers!
Please, how is it good for Sony when they say the cameras sell for a premium price? Just serves to reinforce the myth about Sony being overpriced. So, if you mean that any advertisement is better than none, sure, but I sure won’t congratulate them for a worthless review.
how can it be mirrorless if the only way to use any real lenses with any AF speed is with a dumb adapter that has a mirror in it? silly Sony, tricks are for kids…
“Can hardly notice the difference” between 24 and 36mp!
Can hardly do a review!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is The Zohan so angry? It’s uncomfortable to watch. Relax man.
