Obviously we don’t have real preorder sales info yet. But at least Amazon in some way shows us what’s hot and what’s not. And According to their overall mirrorless ranking (Click here to see) the Sony A7r is the most preordered of the two new Full Frame cameras. It’s followed by the A7 body and on third place we have the A7 with lens kit option. Have to say that I actually expected the kit version to sell more than the A7 body only. Anyway, looks like the Megapixel factor is still very important. UPDATED: I checked SonyAlphaRumors outgoing links and the A7r got 30% more clicks than the A7 and A7kit sum.
The A7r is also the second most sold overall camera at Amazon (ranking here) and the Zeiss 35mm lens sells more than the other FE lenses when you look at the lens ranking (click here).
Still, these rankings not telling us anything about the popularity of the cameras. We have to see if the A7-A7r will be still be within the top list the next coming weeks. My bet is they will remain there for a long time 🙂

And if you are a die hard alpha mount, click on an ad on every visit. It does a bit more than just thanking SAR for all the scoops: it keeps the site afloat 🙂
I think the sale has to materialize for him to get a commission.
No, I believe they get a very small amount just for clicks with the ads.
Not surprised.
Admin, you did order the A7r, right?
yes!
Could I ask why? Im swaying between the two and the price is close, also iso perform upto 800 is fine for me.
In Canada you can preorder from Vistek, The Camera Store (Calgary)
A7 Kit at Best Buy, also,Future Shop.
No wonder, the A7r is a bargain for what it is.
The A7R indeed, is a bargain comparing to the D800E. I actually thought the A7 would be a higher seller though since, for the first time, it brings a full frame sensor with a high resolution 24mp count to a price point the masses can at least practically save up for. At 2K, the cheapest FF offerings from Nikon and Canon were still out of reach for many, including myself, but for the first time ever, I am actually considering jumping on board the FF wagon.
Both cameras are insanely low-priced for what you get, and should definitely shake up the camera world with what manufacturers feel is “enough” to offer at variable price points. Though the EM1 has many benefits over an A7, I’m sure the two models will at least be cross-shopped by people that aren’t already heavily invested in the M43 system.
Exciting time for us consumers indeed!
If you have held the EM-1 in hand it’s a incredibly well constructed camera. I hope the a7 feels as good, I do wish it was the same build as the a7r with all metal dials
Even the A7r does not use as much metal as a E-M1.
“the Sony A7r is the most preordered of the two new Full Frame cameras”
That is one way of looking at this. With the A7 and A7 kit behind the A7r you could just as easily argue that the A7 is the most preordered camera of the two (either with or without kit lens).
+1 for correct thinking
I should add that if I loook at my outgoing clicks the A7r is still the most clicked even if you add A7 and A7kit lens clicks.
note that clicks on SAR are not a representative sample of consumers. clicks from SAR are more representative for the more informed consumers, which are also more likely to be willing to pay more for a camera.
Amazon numbers are still biased in favor of more informed consumers (buy online vs. buy at a store), but certainly less than SAR outgoing links.
anyway, thanks for sharing the stats!
Not surprised who wants a crappy and overpriced kit 3.5-5.6 lens
Could you explain to a newbie in what the kit lens is bad?
A kit lens in most cases never come close to showing the quality of the camera so in a sense when you use a kit lens your selling your self short. Kits lenses don’t really suck. They are just not that good. If you going to spend more than 500.00 for a camera you owe it to your self to get at least one decent prime. The only kit lens I ever liked was the sony 16-50mm but thats a 700.00 lens so….
An extra $200 for a full frame weather sealed kit lens is a pretty good deal even if it is a poorer performer than the Zeiss 24-70mm. You can probably sell it for $400, especially since you can’t buy the lens by itself.
Not is people have seen sample photos from it.
Newbies mostly won’t buy $1700 camera.
From what I’ve read from the extended review of thecamerastore.ca the kit lens reminds them of the best/better kit lens, some Fuji 16-50 I like. Ill be grabbing with kit as I can’t afford the Zeiss, really f4, why no f2.8.
It’s a “slow” lens. What this means is that you won’t get much subject isolation at any focal length. It’s also a limited focal length lens. Canon has the 24-105mm F/4 and Nikon has the 24-120mm F/4 and the cheap 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5. The latter is not much bigger than the new Sony kit, but it’s considerably wider (4mm is a lot on the wide end) and also longer enough to be noticeable.
So in the context of the current kit lens line-up from the competitors, SONY’s is the worst offer. Basically, in APS-C terms, this would be a 18.5-43.5mm lens (not even 18-55 that is the standard for cheap APS-C kit lenses).
Simply put, FF cameras at this price point is nice, but you’re seriously limiting your options with this kit lens. No shallow DOF (subject isolation by blurring background) to speak of, very limited focal range.
In fact, you’d much better off with a still cheaper APS-C body with a good third party kit lens (17-50 F/2.8, 17-70mm F/2.8-4 C from Sigma). Or a Fuji with their 18-55 F/2.8-4 lens. In other words, putting such a kit lens on this camera is completely pointless. You can get the same performance in a much smaller package going with a smaller sensor + faster lens for about the same price point.
In response to Csaba Molnar. Almost every one of your points are incorrects.
1. Poor subject Isolation. You state you would be better off with a 17-50 2.8 lets compare DOF with the two lenses. for a subject at 5 feet, at 17mm 2.8 your crop lens has a DOF of 3.04 feet, while the 28 3.5 has a DOF of 1.24 feet. more than double the subject isolation. What about the long end you say? at 50 2.8 your DOF is 0.32 feet. With the slow crummy 70 at 5.6 your DOF is 0.32. So they lenses have the exact same DOF
2. Did you look at the MTF graph? It looks excellent for a lens of this type.
3. Not all kit lenses are bad, see the fuji 18-55.
4. Why not wait for someone to test it in real world use before having a strong opinion
The 7 kit lens seems like wast of time and money.
What are the chances that for example Sigma or Tamron offer a normal zoom that would fit the 7?
They offer bright zooms for DSLRs but do they have anything in their current offering that could fit mirrorless full frame?
I suppose their current full frame candidates for full frame assumes mirror box and thus are unessecary big as well as potentially not optimal for contrast detection?
/Oz
I don’t understand how can be a $200 (as a Kit) Lens overpriced…
Crappy? I think it’s too soon to tell…
+1
Seriously! for the price of the “crappy” lens, you have to at least assume there would be SOME compromise in image quality when comparing to the Zeiss offerings. This is also a really good option for people that don’t already have FF lenses of any brand and ties them over until they have the money to buy one of the higher quality options. I doubt everyone will have 3K just lying around to be able to purchase both camera and Zeiss lens from the start.
That’s why I bought the lens kit, to hold me over until the preordered Zeiss lenses arrive as well since I sold all my lenses and camera.
Let me get this straight: you sold all your lenses and cameras to buy something you have not tested? And you are staying without camera for several weeks (if you are lucky)? I can give you advice if you pay me.
Look at the test Raw files. The lens is extremely poor on the edges. Very soft. Not worth the money at all.
Looking at the price of the other lenses, I would hardly consider 300 Euro overpriced. Especially since the lens has OSS. Its qualit remains to be tested.
I hate to ask this question, but how do you know that THIS kit lens is bad? Have you reviewed it, tested it, used it in any way that would support your supposition?
Don’t have to review or test it, just look at the specification. At 3.5-5.6 variable aperture it’s a slow lens, the slowest among full frame lenses from competitors. You won’t get much DOF to speak of. Additionally, it’s also the shortest focal length lens. Canikon kit lenses start at 24mm, which is significantly wider in practice. They are also longer. They are also faster.
Even if tests prove that this lens is sharp edge to edge, it still has limited use. It won’t show what these cameras are capable of, and will limit your creative options considerably. Your won’t be able to take better photos with this combo than you would with an APS-C body and a faster lens (17-50 F/2.8 lenses available from third parties as well as Canikon). And it’s definitely not on par with what is available for other full frame systems. All this info is in the specs.
People have too much money these days. I’m sure it’s going to be a great camera but I don’t understand why people are willing to put down so much money on a camera with no proper reviews just so they can have it a bit sooner than others.
The sensible thing to do would be to wait a couple of months to see if there are any serious bugs or bad reviews. The good lenses aren’t coming out until next year anyway and there won’t be any RAW support for a while in LR etc. (sony’s RAW converter is painfully slow).
I’m sure most of them will be returned. I mean, it’s the temptation to ply with a new toy… for 14 days
corrections: ply -> play 😉
Anyone knows what happened to all these ‘secondhand’ cameras? Coz I don’t want to end up buying one.
I don’t see any reason to not get one at launch other than we all know it’ll be a few hundred pounds cheaper within about 6 months. Its not as if I even consider this a first generation camera since its the combined knowledge of the A99, RX1 and NEX 7 that has really made it what it is. It looks like a very, very good buy to me. I’ll opt for the A7 though. I don’t need 36 megapixels and I do a lot of low light street photography where I think the 24mp version will actually be better.
To name a few examples;
Early Canon 5D iii’s had a light leak problem – some camera’s had to be recalled.
Canon 1D iii had serious AF inaccuracy – also had to be recalled.
Nikon D600 has problems with the shutter generating dust. So much so, that they’ve released a D610 shortly afterwards with a new shutter mechanism.
Leica M8 had an inadequate IR filter requiring external IR cut filters on the lens. M8.2 was released soon afterwards.
And to pose more interesting counterexamples: No new Sony alpha camera has had any serious problem in the last two years. Look at the ambitious NEX-7, no problems. NEX-3, 5, first cameras in their series: no problems.
If you look at actual relevant examples you’ll see that Sony, while sometimes producing odd UI/design choices, has fairly good quality control.
it’s cool how none of your examples are of sony cameras :-p
Yes, because even if there is a serious problem, such as NEX video overheating, Sony just doesn’t recall or repair anything. Instead you just get the next version to buy, about half a month later 😉
So? It’s not like those recall cost the early adopter, or did any of those issues ruined their life or put their life in danger. They still get to enjoy the latest technology months before other people or before it gets replaced by a newer and better model.
Good lenses? Sony A-Mount to E-Mount Lens Adapter with Translucent Mirror Technology + 50mm f/1.4 Planar and your done.
Just remember that the mirror cuts out a big chunk of light. Just take a look at the DxO benchmarks for the a99 compared to its 24mp peer D600.
Though it is an awesome option to have. I personally am looking more to the smaller manual glass like the Voigtlander 75/1.8 and 35/1.2. I may get those two lenses + the Sony 55/1.8 and call it a set.
After all that time and all the samples, we are still at the “SLT robbing light”? I’d like to see what is that situation where the D600 will do the job and the A99 won’t.
The D600 came out above the A99 in the better written reviews. Check the BJP magazine review where they said the A99 was about 30% over priced compared to the competition and the quality was below the D600 due to the mirror.
D600 good image quality is true.
But , it crappy in build quality and hardware function.
I’ve seen plenty of reviews, before making my opinion. Yes, the D600 is indeed better, but the question is by how much. For most intents and purposes, I’ll call it pretty much a draw between the two cameras up to and including ISO3200.
I can’t imagine that anyone in their right mind would buy that combination knowing that the 55 1.8 zeiss fe will be coming out in a few months; a lens which is much smaller and lighter and has similar light gathering abilities.
If you already have the lens, fair enough, but I wouldn’t go out and buy it for this purpose.
After the a7r is labeled camera of the year by the pros the wait to get one will be long and arduous.
In my experience, just because reviewers say one camera is better than another or functions in a way that they like/hate doesn’t mean that you will feel the same when it’s in your hands. I rented the MarkIII and hated it but love my 6D. I purchased the RX1 and it was completely unusable for me but others love it. My Pentax 645D was rated slow but it focuses and locks on with 100% accuracy even in low light and once the pictures are loaded they are gorgeous and worth the wait.
I checked again today, Sony A7 is as big as Fuji FinePix HSxx series.
It’s a great evolution in form factor as it s FF sensor while Fuji one has 1/2″ sensor. However it will be nolonger a discrete camera, a “baggable” one unless we only use 35 mm or 55 mm prime lenses.
Fuji FinePix HS xx series are from Bridge camera category.
This goes to show that the cheaper camera doesn’t mean it will be a successful camera. There is a lot of money out there and the a7r, even if it was D800 price, would have sold same.
Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that Sony has priced these as they are. This is just a moment for everyone here to reflect on the fact that price is not everything, especially on this category.
The price might not be all that important for professionals or people with the means to buy 3000$ cameras… But there’s no way I would consider buying one of these if they were 3000$. At 1700$, I think I can save for an A7 and still do fine. Plus, I’m surprised not more people are waiting for good reviews. I’m sure the first serious reviews will show superb image quality and everything, but I’d still prefer a confirmation.
I see that in Europe the a7 body costs the same 1499€ as the E-M1 body.
http://geizhals.at/sony-alpha-7-evil-gehaeuse-ilce-7-a1017416.html
While E-M1 arguably might be a more versatile and feature packed camera I think a price drop is in order. 200-300€, please…
I find it encouraging that the a7r is the best seller.
This is the most megapixels currently available.
Although this id not the rite camera for me i hope the fact that the highest megapixels are selling best will hopefully encourage sony to make an even higher mp new camera.
Sar readers continue to holler for LESS megapixels so i find it encouraging to see that the rest of the world shares my view and wants MORE MEGAPIXELS AND HIGHER RESOLUTION.
Is it not the right camera for you, Barry? You haven’t mentioned that before. Please tell us more.
Its good to know I have faithfull grouppies like you who follow my every word just to post negetive responses.
If I were less important to you then you would not continue to read every one of my words with such interrest.
Not everyone is such a ardent fan and they may not have read. Every word like you.
Thank you so much for youre ongoing support.
The A7r being number 1 is potentially misleading. The A7 and A7 + lens kit are two separate SKUs and are tracked differently. Without actual numbers it’s impossible to know if those two combined total to more than the A7r.
Admin just said more clicks on a7r than a7 and a7 kit combined.
Given the ridiculous video bitrate these cameras have, I skip them. I will keep my NEX 5 and may be look for a Canon FF.
Or you can record to external recorder and get a much better bitrate, which I don’t imagine you can do on those NEX cameras.
And do you know of a reasonably cheap external recorder? let’s say around 250$/euros.
But if video is that important then FF and the ability to record externally is worth it to many.
Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle II
what has sales got to do with anything unless you are making money from it, I would rather see proper reviews
Reviews will come when people are ready to write the reviews. Do you want complete silence on SAR till then?
no
Do you know when the preorder is available in amazon-germany?
I originally thought I’d get the 7r. I actually preordered both cameras on Amazon. Then after seeing the full size image samples from Sony’s site I realized I’d be happy with the 24mp detail. They have definitely improved the performance of the 24mp sensor. In the RX1, while it did look nice, it had a more visible modulation pattern (from micro lenses, it imposes a slight reduction in effective aperture and sometimes it is visible if you see enough images) than the new sensor. So I have to suspect that, even though it wasn’t really advertised as Sony’s focused on the 7r that they also expanded the gapless design to the 7’s 24mp sensor.
And since the images were looking very nice, I had to consider the definitive reality that the 7 will have better high ISO performance and perhaps most importantly to me, it will have PDAF giving it meaningfully useful subject tracking. So I canceled the 7r pre-order in favor of the 7.
I also pre-ordered both the 35mm and 55mm lenses, but, I haven’t decided if I’ll get the 35, 55, or both. I have my eye on that Voigtlander 35/1.2… it produces some surprisingly nice images for such a cheap (for what you’re getting) lens.
Can’t wait for December 1, though!
I ordered both the 35 and 55, as suggested by another as well get the battery pack (takes 2 new batteries also pre ordered)
I wish the battery grip was like the a99’s, battery in camera and two in the grip. You can remove the battery grip or batteries without the camera turning off (I have not tested this), great for timelapse. I had a 5d2 battery grip which would shut off the camera the second the battery door was opened
I believe it is set up like the A99 one in camera and 2 in the grip, that’s why I ordered extras (batteries). Will be interesting to know or test that out.
I’m honestly torn between the two. I hate Sony for making us choose like this. The 36mp with no AA is clearly superior at base ISO, but that’s about the only thing keeping me interested in the 7R. The 7 is simply better at everything else: OSPDAF (not /that/ important for me personally though), faster flash sync, electronic rear curtain.
more is always better assumption? you only have to think about what will YOU do with the photos that come out of this camera and what can already be achieved with similar, modern cameras or even older cameras.
Good reply…I agree. Are you a landscape, architecture, or portrait photographer? Then maybe the 36 is right for you. Do you want to get some really good action shots of your children or grandchildren, pets then the 24mp is a perfect choice.
In weighing the pros and cons the 24mp A7 was my first choice.
Do you crop into images a lot or print fairly large? Remember 36 mp sounds like a lot but it isn’t 50% more resolution vs 24mp. Plus the higher the sensor resolution, the potentially poorer the video quality could be (if that is important to you).
36 mp is only about 20% more resolution than 24mp when both sensors are the same size.
I keep wondering: how stupid people can be! The d800 isn’t worse at high iso than d600. So a7r won’t be worse than a7. Period.
Nice comparison with d610…..http://www.cameracomparisonreview.com/2013/10/19/sony-alpha-7-vs-nikon-d610/
Admin (et al), country/store cost variances aside, have you heard anything on actual shipping dates that may confirm pre-1 Dec availability? I’ve seen indications at UK-Sony/GE-WEX/JP-Amazon sites indicating mid-Nov dates where most others indicate 1 Dec. Yes, I ask purely out of selfishness…I need, uh, want one by late November! 🙂 I’m a long time alpha and now NEX user. I’ve been eager to go FF and tried the a99 for a while (and rented canon/nikon variants), but didn’t like the bulk for the majority of my needs. I’ve got a travel adventure throughout December that would be a perfect full eval with the A7. And, Admin I’ll use your links to buy. This site is great. Thanks for all you do. Likewise, thanks to the regular contributors on SAR for the (usually–haha) excellent sharing and knowledge.
Is it wrong to hope the cameras will be delayed till late December? That way, I have an excuse to splurge ;P
I was told by the camera dealer when I preordered that it will be close to Christmas by the time I’d get mine.
Can someone please tell me why all Sony lenses on Amazon have “wrong” minimum and maximum focal length(not focal distance) listed under technical details? For instance, the 24-70 Zeiss lens has a minimum focal length of 10 and maximum focal length of 24; the 35mm prime also has the same 10-24 focal length listed. I believe Sony’s website has the same info. Does Sony use different tech terms that I don’t know when if comes to focal length?
Is there any reliable info about which one has the electronic first curtain shutter and the 1/250s flash sync rate?
I think the A7r should have been made with 6.1 megapixels, to enhance it’s low light capabilities to the fullest with huge photosites and finally meet my demands of photographing animals in the dark without flash. I prefer 2:00 am to capture nocturnal creatures in their natural habitats, and 6.1 megapixels would be fine since I sneak up on them to where I am nearly standing on top of them. Also, 6.1 megapixels is enough to print billboards when one frames a shot correctly, so, what I am saying here is that the A7 and A7r may be decent cameras but they will not work for me.
LOL!!!!!!!! best comment ever

And do you know of a reasonably cheap external recorder? let’s say around 250$/euros.”
Here is the answer . Have a look at the blackmagic hyperdeck shuttle II.
I’ve been working with out for two years now, almost perfect and it’s a bargain!
does anybody knows the Bitrate in video for the A7’s when recording external?
The tripod mount and surrounding surface looks exactly like my NEX7. Wobble, wobble, wobble, no matter how tightly you crank down any mounting plate. Not good.
OK, some RF glass tests by Ron Scheffler on FM forum.
Apparently, there will be more demand for the native wide-angle FE optics.
It may turns there will be a little demand on a7 (and, most likely, on a7r – it doesn’t seem to be much better than a7 for rf wides).
This is heart breaking. I preordered the 24-70 zoom and 55/1.8 but I need a camera that can make my 0.95-1.4 Leica lenses shine. I’ve been waiting over 1 year for my back ordered M240 so sorry now that I canceled it thinking Sony would work for me. I will wait for Huff’s review before canceling my preorders.
Uh-oh!
Given this scenario, why would still look for guidance from Stve who already (without checking anything) appears to be favoring the A7r. The (lack of) shutter noise from the M can not be beat for any more mega pixels. It is that simple.
If Huff doesn’t show full sized 0.95-1.4 examples that are gorgeous or mediocre something isn’t right. They either do not exist or he’s overly enthusiastic about Sony’s offerings. I could wait to see what camera and lenses he doesn’t sell but that would take too long.
Sony really need to get the A7R to someone that can perform similar testing. Else these tests will destroy it’s reputation for many.
I think this was an experiment by Sony to see whether the A9 sensor should be AA-less. The A7r selling more despite the higher price tag should reinforce the plan of making all their high end cameras AA-less.
Is the metabones bonus only for Australian or it is everywhere?…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcFox4EorYc
good hands-on of the A7
I’m going to wait for some real tests before ordering, but its obvious lots of legacy glass users and those that don’t want to swallow the $9k Leica pill are opting for 36 mp A7r. I’m going 24 with the A7, as it should be a touch better in low light and the PDAF is a big deal since I will use AF lenses (24-70, 70-200 like my Canon). I’m looking for a compact replacement for my 5d3’s for event shooting, this ticks all the boxes. For me, if the AF delivers, I’m getting two – one with a grip for the big zoom and the other for the 24-70 and adapted lenses.
For events, the a7 is the obvious choice with the dual AF system. The burst speed of the a7r is also much too slow except for posed and group shots.
I wonder if Sony or any 3rd party can make adapter + translucent mirror works with Canon lens. That would be super awesome!
AF is slow with adapted lenses. Source: Metabones, TCS, etc.
http://www.ronscheffler.com/techtalk/?p=224 Just take a look!!! 😉
a7/a7r photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/realityscans/sets/72157636665697086/with/10335004395/
You guys understand that every camera that has been reviewed or tested were all pre production models.
While the 7 & 7r are truly impressive, I’ve become very attached to the tilting and *swivelling* screen on my A77 and have also found that I rely on the in-body anti-shake a good deal. I’d be willing to live with a slightly larger body in order to accommodate these features before making the jump to full-frame. Anti-shake will also be important if I’m to use my expensive 70-400 lens successfully on any new camera. (It shouldn’t be hard for a camera to have sufficient smarts to work out which variety of anti-shake to use.)
What about the bl00dy manual
A couple points of interest:
#40 on the mirrorless camera list is D-Con Mouse Poison
There is one Canon in the top 100
This story must be false and the numbers of preorders must be cooked.
The whining experts on this site, that said this camera was so ugly, must be right? Right?
Now we must wait to see if the cameras pictures are all blurry and fuzzy with no detail as the rest of the whining experts have reported.
Some of the experts here were predicted that the camera didn’t even exist and that SAR had been tricked. Even up to a few days before release!!
I know and it’s great entertainment!
Still no bl00dy manual. What are people buying? Do they know?
When are we going to have a firmware update, how long must we wait.
Lets see those f 1.4-1.2s I know they gonna be big but at f 2.8 there is no point not to choice faster fuji x lenses.
Do you mean that I can’t fit this camera into my watch pocket?
Sony makes nothing but junk.
You seem to want everything. You know very well it will fit the basket on the front of your bike. As long as you leave off the lens.
Lens?
You know very well that Sony never has any lenses, they are either too expensive and too big German or cheap worthless Japanese plastic junk.
What they need is a sharp, weather proof, small 7 to 500 mm f 1.2 lens that fits in my shirt pocket and costs about $70.
Sony strikes again…..
WTF are you ppl been sarcastic about? If my xf is at f 1.2 the zeiss should at least be F2. Or else why am I getting a FF. I don’t mind a little bigger, or small manual foucus FF 1.2. Lets but leica out of business. But the current line up puts me to sleep.
Gentlemen I have a doubt? I would buy the A7R with the 16-35 2.8 Zeiss and mount via adapter LA-EA4, this will increase the distance between the focal plane and objective, will remain always a 16-35 or will increase the focal length to the longest distance?

Everyone is overlooking the RX10 because of all the attention that the A7 and A7R are receiving. It shows up at #7 on Amazon.com. I would like to read more reviews of the RX10.
http://www.dpreviews.com has tons of reviews on every camera
The kind of control you have with this camera is amazing for the NEX(alpha) line!
How would you know? there is no manual available. Do the buttons have a selection from 2 or 3 items? are they as customisable or better than the OMD range. Who knows?
BTW Who is off on a trip at the moment, so you can’t ask him.
I think LOL went with Who on that trip.
OSS Lens vs A99 Steadyshot.
So one of the main reason I like the A99 was the steadyshot feature it had for the video mode. It shoots videos like using a glidecam.
Would OSS lens do the same thing the inbody steadyshot that A99 could do?
For those interested. A7/A7r Sony official video.

This is a link to the Sony Australia announcement. The second part contains a few details I hadn’t noticed elsewhere. Its about 24 minutes and includes the video above near the beginning, but most of it is discussion/description.

If we filter out all the hype about these cameras it boils down to this.
The A7 is another 24mp camera in an sea of other 24mp cameras.
The price is good for a ff .
The A7r is another 36mp camera…nothing new…others are out there but its cheaper.
The res is hype and window dressin.
No new tech
No higher res
No universal compatabilty.
Game changig is total market hype
These are nex cameras and a little bit better than the old ones.
If you like nex these are a good purchase.
Everything I am hearing leads me to believe that the real significant changes will not happen till 2015.
Sony will probably produce cameras in 2014 with a few new features or a different shape but the same basic exmor cmos sensor, nothing higher than 36mp.
If you need a camera now they will probably be slightly better than older models.
If you want something new I think 2015 will be the year to wait for.
Wrong on all counts and delusional.
Sony cameras are expensive and very badly supported here in The UAE; the distributor is happy to shif boxes but accessories (e.g. Flashguns) are normally not available. Thankfully B&H do a great mail order service. Even factoring in the shipping costs and approx. 5% duty/clearance charges, it’s still cheaper than buying locally, which just goes to show how much the distributor are making for a rubbish service. I dread to think when the A7r will be available here, if ever, as it doesn’t ship with a kit lens. If Sony want to start eating into Canon and Nikon’s market, they need to find distributors who take such products seriously and are not just box-shifters.
I think this is a very unfair statement given Sony’s efforts to bring radically new products to market such as the NEX range, the Rx1/Rx1r and the A7/A7r. I may wait a bit as I am not overly happy with the A7/A7r design as well as other little things but I say a big bravo to Sony for their brilliant undertakings.
Right on target.
Oh BTW, if the reviews say it’s good I’ll buy an A7.
I too aplaud the research sony is doing with new stacked or organic sensors( based on thiervpatends) and anxiosly await a new camera with this new non cmos technolgy.
CMOS is like the current hd tvs.
Better and much less expensive than ever…but 4k is just around the corner.
For christ’s sake.. I’m so tired of people doing something like this and then hosting the files on a shitty bandwidth restricted server. Really? I pay $14/month for my own shared server with unlimited bandwidth. Unlimited… no restrictions.
No no, let’s use google drive or some horrible free file host that makes you wait 90 seconds to download a file… lol what a joke.
Thanks *so much* for this… can’t see SHIT!
I am surprised that SAR was not the early bird to pick up on the upcoming Sony A5/A5r, APS-C replacements for the current NEX-6 / NEX-7.

==========
“Sony has announced in Japan this morning that, following the enthusiastic response to its new full-frame A7, it will be advancing production of its A5 and A5r, APS-C versions of its A7/A7r full frame DSLR.
“The A5 will replace the NEX-6, using the new sensor employed in the company’s recently announced A3000. Delivery is expected in late February 2014.”
“The A5r will replace the NEX-7, and will have a new 36mp APS-C sensor. the most refined and advanced APS-C sensor ever produced, Sony said. It is expected to launch in late March 2014.
“The A5 and A5r represent our commitment to providing consumers with a choice of sensors and price points in a single, more consumer-accepted configuration,” Sony’s announcement said. “E mount lenses for both the A5 and A7 series will work on both full frame and APS-C sensors, with the APS-C versions providing smaller sensor coverage when used on the A7.
“The A5 will carry a body-only MSRP of $699, and the A5r will be priced at $999. Both will differ from the A7 series mostly in sensor size. All current E mount APS-C lenses will function normally on the A5 and A5r.”

I would like to know more about this A5r 36mp c and if a a mount camera with that sensor is coming out.
Naturally i would also like to know if what you just posted is true or not.
It has been posted in dpreview. I don’t believe a word!
Thanks a lot for this very good news i hope Andrea will confirm it :D….
This about 5/5r was a hoax i presume, given no other news about it here or elsewhere?
For one thing who are you to be so critical of me???
I’m no longer in the photography business, and I could not refuse the offer I was given for my gear.
I planned on just purchasing a p& s.
Seen this A 7 and thought, why not?
So stop being so critical of me….it’s just camera gear.
I actually am offended at your comment.
any ideas how leica R lenses will perform, they seem to be much cheaper, aren’t they?
“According to their overall mirrorless ranking…. the Sony A7r is the most preordered of the two new Full Frame cameras. It’s followed by the A7 body and on third place we have the A7 with lens kit option……
Anyway, looks like the Megapixel factor is still very important.”
Nope, not at all to me, but the stronger body and offset micro lenses did woo me to the A7r, if they were in the A7 I’d have ordered it.
I have found the perfect flash for the A7/r.

Here’s hoping a Sony version with a multi interface shoe connector will be made. Right now the only people making them are Sony themselves.
