The Drone market is exploding since years and Sony added one special feature to stand out with their new 4K action camera. It’s the “Advanced SteadyShot” feature. The video on top shows how it works. And Cinema5D (Click here) posted the very first AX33 review. This is a 4K camcorder for $999. There is also a Vimeo video here.

Nice aerial video shot from a drone, steadyshot works well.
Do you need steady shot on a drone? Can’t recall any shaky drone footage from the past, even without a steady shot system. Doesn’t the drone act as a steady shot for any camera? To a certain degree?
Stabilized gimbals are available for drones but not all are stabilized. The GPS system can hold relative position to about 1 meter but is not a stabilizer. The footage shown in the video shows the effect of the camera stabilization which is quite effective.
Many drones have gimbals installed to stabilize their camera, flying isnt as smooth as you think, there are Lots of vibrations from the motors and winds
You definately need stabilization in drone use. If you think otherwise .. means you have not used a drone yet. It may well be that the stabilization is done in software but non the less you need to do stabilization.
I have been flying drones for years and I can assure you that steadyshot will make no visual difference when using a gimbal. Sony missed the boat with their form factor. GoPro is by far the #1 action cam out there and ALL the gimbals are designed for the GoPro’s form factor. No way to fit a Sony to a gimbal. Maybe Sony should make their own gimbal. I tried the previous version on one of my un-gimbaled drones and ended up selling the Sony camera and getting a gimbal. Made all the difference in
the world.
!Well now, my disruptive renaissance comments really kicked things off to a flying start huh? What Is It next? Debunk the myth of Postmodernism XD?
If we help do that before the next century our children’s children may forgive us XD
this is a us$500 not a us$999, the ax33 is the handycam not the action cam
Correct, I was surprised to find this video, expected to see the handycam in action.
Who the hell is in charge of naming these things? The FDR-X1000V?? Come on Sony marketing division! Simple names sell, looks like an awesome cam though, Xavc-s, 4K and the stabilization looks good.
Fun fact is, that what we see is simulation made in postproduction, not real effect from camera.
no
Is that why they put two cameras on the drone? One without steadyshot and the other also without steadyshot? Or perhaps, like the video says, one with and one without? I know the conspiracy bullcrap is always more interesting
it makes use of the 4K resolution to get a much better software stabilized 1080p output.
that’s fine, but do we have any gimbal for the sony hdr cam to mount it on a drone? I mean like for gopro and such form factors, with ability to rotate the camera. I recently bought a Walkera drone and could not find any gimbal for my sony hdr camera though some says they support it but in reality – does not!
The new Sony steadyshot system is a “balanced steady-shot” if you look up the info and videos you will notice that the entire lens assembly is placed on something like a gimbal inside the camera. That’s why they call it “balanced”.
can I rotate the camera up and down like this?

No and you also can’t make coffee with it 🙂
This is what you want from a gimbal: shoot the bottom of your cheap crappy phantom. This is so 2014!
Might be good for vibrations from road vehicles too.
excellent stuff, Sony kicks butt, they always had the best optical steadyshots!
Actually, the handy cam is listed as AXP33 at Sony GER with a retail price of 1.199 €.
And instead of sticking to the 1″ sensor they are inserting a 1/2.3″ sensor.
I wonder how visible the difference under normal conditions would be between a handycam with 1″ and 1/2.3″ would be.
AX33 NTSC version and AXP33 for PAL countries.
The different in sensor size is very visible!.
I hate to rain on anyone’s parade … but Drone Shots are so-last-year. They have become a cliché, just like Slo-Mo shots.
If you want to be noticed, do something different with your Sony ActionCam. How many times have we seen a camera mounted on a guitar neck, etc? Here’s “guitar neck” with creativity!

Did clips like that back in late 1980’s using VHS-C and super8 camera’s, those where the action cams of the day back then. Sometimes we even hooked up a BVU camera on a pully system. It has also been fun to see how every time camera’s develop and become sophisticated we get a new system that throws every option away and go back to basics. DSLRs: no viewfinder,no ND, separate sound recorder, no peaking, zebra etc. took years and smart hackers before we got some of that 20 year old tech back.
Drone is last year, why not do something novel with them like put them on a speaker, you lay the speaker flat down facing up and put a board on top and well, the camera moves and like dances around 🙂
(this pointless comment has been brought to you by an avid real photographer content to simply laugh down any hipsterish trolLITE comments that are at some point intended to enLIGHTEN)
AX33 footage looks nice enough, the sun-lit whites finally look somewhat natural, but the entire clip is not even close to cinematographic. Massive purple fringing everywhere, even on people’s faces. You’d expect a better lens on a 1000 dollar camera.
