We are getting closer to the A99 shipment and at in Asia the camera will ship next week according to Digitalrev (Click here to see) and at [shoplink 14872 ebay]Dzone eBay (Click here)[/shoplink]. In US the camera will ship around November 6th according to BHphoto (Click here).
And here are some new A99, RX1 and NEX-6 tests:
The Imaging Resource comparometer now contains the A99 studio shots!
Lenstip posted many new tests shots: A99 image samples, NEX-6 and 10-18mm samples, NEX-5R and Zeiss samples, NEX-6 with 35mm samples.
ThePhoBlographer posted a first impression RX1 review: “For what it’s worth, the Sony Rx-1 is justified at its price. My only problems so far with the camera are that I believe it should have a built-in EVF, the autofocus is a bit sluggish, and I want a depth of field scale around the lens.”

Today (20th) there are Sony demo’s at camera warehouse in Amsterdam. A99 nex6 and nex5r.
Thanks, read this and went there; preordered.
(Btw, preordered the Nex-6; and they didn’t have the New-5r for display)
Seems like 35mm f1.8 is not that good at wide apertures.
Agree. Looks like these shots are shot thru a compact camera!
Quite good for me, not so good corners wide open
I wouldn’t believe a single word I read on DigitalRev.
+1
DigitalRev are widely known as Sony camera haters. Can’t remember when they’ve ever said too much positive unless it says Canon or Nikon on the front
I would love to see sample images from the 10-18mm zoom on a NEX-7 with the FW 1.01.
Wow! A grey import that costs £100 more than UK supplied copy (with a Sony warranty). I think I’ll pass.
It seems that every sample made of the 35mm f1.8 avoids using it wide open.
Not really a good sign. The 50mm f1.8 was superb.
I can get the LA EA2 + SAM 35mm f1.8 for less cost if I want AF.
One thing that annoys me is the hiked prices on Nex lenses.
just compare the A99 and the D600 at 6400 isos.
I cannot see on my phone. What is your conclusion?
OK, I looked on my 27″ monitor. I would say A99 is definitely better then D600, and almost on a par with D800E.
The amazing thing to me is looking at how bad the A900 is and how far sensors have come in 4 years.
For me, if D800E is 10/10 then A99 is 9.7/10. D600 is 8.5/10. A77 is 5/10. A900 is 3/10.
Considering this is comparing jpeg images and taking into account how bad Sony’s track record is for jpeg engines I have really high hopes for A99 RAW quality.
You honestly think the a77 sensor is better than the a900? I’d say the opposite.
I knew this would happen and that’s why I started with ‘For me’. Just my opinion. And yes I do think that based on the images of that Imaging Resource comparometer at ISO 6400 the A77 was considerably better than the A900.
However, I think that’s irrelevant as both those cameras are obsolete. The real discussion should be A99 vs D800 because D800 is the benchmark in this camera class.
the a77 sensor is really worst than a900!
Yes, A99 seems to be be better than D600 (same sensor, and SLT for A99 : what a shame for Nikon!!) at 6400. But Canon EOS5DMKIII is just above.
Do not forget that the D800/D800E sensor has not the same size. That’s why i compare with the D600. That’s easier to check the diff.
The a99 Imaging Resource comparometers are JPGs. I need to see RAW to make true comparison. From what I saw comparing the MK III, the a99 is definitely short. Especially @ 1600 & 6400.
I’m waiting for more reviews and the RAW comparison on DP Review but I’m not too optimistic.
I’m a happy a77 owner and there is a ton of things on the a99 I’m looking forward to. But it has to be the best in regards to image quality and high ISO.
At it’s current price point I may have to jump ship. I’ll miss the screen and the peaking but I want top image quality.
I’m going to upgrade to the best camera out of the a99, MK III, and D800.
So far I’m leaning MK III…
Just asking, but what does the DXO scores indicate? Because from those scores it seems like Canon cannot touch Nikon. It does not even appear close. I do hear that 5DMK3 does well with noise, but it seems from the majority of camps that Nikon’s and Sony’s colors are much more accurate than Canon’s. I have thought about the 5dmk3 but it does not seem that significantly better if it is in fact better than the 99 from early reports. I guess time will tell but it almost seems that overall the 99 will probably have a better DXO score than the MK3. I will be surprised if it does not do as well, but I am also surprised the MK3 did not do better.
Are you serious when you think the MK3 is the best IQ camera right now? At native ISO (100), the damn camera has banding noise in the shadow and limited dynamic range. You’re not quite as well-informed as you think. On the other hand, you choose the Canon because they have lenses that you want, then I would shut up.
Lenstips confirmed my fears about the 10-18mm.
At full aperture it is soft in the center and softer on the edges/corners at all focal lengths 10mm, 14mm and 18mm, 18 being worse than 10. Looks only usable at f/5.6.
I am ok with edges and corner softness at full aperture, but soft center is certainly disappointing for a ~$800 lens.
And that’s on the nex-6 at 16Mp! It will be worse on the nex-7 …
Hugo,
I don’t know which samples you were looking at, but the only fault I see from the 10-18 has quite low contrast at WO but the detail is there. It’s not smeary and smudgy like the 16. TCA and vignette are visible though. By f/5.6, all have improved significantly, and this is where most would shoot their landscape.
On the other hand the 35/1.8 oss looks absolutely great.
Bokeh is really pleasing, like the 50/1.8 oss but without the chromatic aberrations.
Sharpness at f/2.2 is good in the center. F/1.8 is visibly softer but the image has this slight hint of spherical aberrations like all these older lenses. I like.
Sharpness at smaller aperture looks really great. Might be similar or near small aperture IQ of the 24/1.8Z or sigma 30/2.8.
I thought I had something wrong with my eye’s when I looked at these but you confirm my thoughts exactly. This lens is much worse than the 16mm 2.8 with the wide angle adapter.
you re talking about the 10-18mm lens right ? you might have replied on the wrong post :p
There is only one picture at f/1.8 (the table shot), and it doesn’t much SA I have to tell you. My ZF 35/1.4 has more than this. It doesn’t have the 3D-ness of zeiss but it’s still quite good. I don’t think the 24/1.8 can do any better at 1.8.
The lenstip shots are quite bad actually. Soft corners and no real sharpness even in the center. I would have expected better results from the A99/24-70 combo.
And the high ISO in those shots is quite disappointing too. It’s difficult to say how bad without comparing with other cameras, but ISO 6400 looks unusable.
examples of 10-18 are REAL sample of BAD examples !
No news, the A99 ships next week in HK.
Tip for people from Amsterdam. If you preorder the Nex 6 today in the shop of the camera warehouse and put in a downpayment of €150,– you get a discount of €100,– Pretty sweet deal.
Wow. 3 x the price of a a77 in $Aus and $100 more than a D800 on Digital rev.
Just lost me
lol your comparing a FF cost vs a apsc i dont know what to say. its in 5dIII and d800 league and cheaper with many more options
Good Deal at the camera warehouse in Amsterdam. With a downpayment Nex 6
Of €150,– you get a €100,– discount.

I hope, in Germany we get it at the end of october
3200 euros???? is it a nightmare? I always heard it will cost 2800 dollars. For that price i can buy 1 nikon D600 and one canon 6D….
Sony Canada has an estimated shipment date of Oct. 23. Hopefully my friends south of the border will see a similar timeline. I’ll try to share some real world results with this group once I have the sexy beast of a camera in my hands.
How you guys getting it so much earlier than us. You lucky dogs. Hopefully we here in the states will get an early release date surprise. Let us know how the 99 performs.
Do you know when the RX1 is expected in Canada?
Just got the A99 today from Cardiff Camera Centre..
So far so cool…
After tinkering with these a bit in Lightroom, IMHO…
The A99 looks phenomenal with the IR comparison, and that’s only jpeg, raw will be better. The minute difference between the A99 and the 5d3 can easily be cleaned up in post – but its not something you’ll be able to see unless you’re pixel peeping, it won’t show in print or web size images. Gotta love LR4. The detail advantage the D800 has at low ISO’s disappears into noisier images at high ISO’s a-la the A77. Don’t care about the stripped down D600, but its not superior to the A99 image in any way. ISO’s above 6400 is strictly B&W for me as they’re all too noisy for my tastes. So I really don’t care about 12800 comparisons, f1.4 and 6400 will turn dark into daylight.
After selling my 5d2 with a few Zeiss and L lenses, I bought a Nex5n and the EM5 while waiting for the next generation FF cameras to hit. I’m so glad I didn’t jump the gun and go 5d3 or D800 as the A99 has all the IQ plus some exclusive features that are the difference for me – namely 60p and Steadyshot with all lenses, both A-mount and legacy adapted. IQ that matches or beats class leaders, 60p, tilt LCD and IBIS that’s cheaper in the U.S. compared to the D800 or 5d3 … the A99 has raised the bar. Can’t wait till the U.S. cameras ship, two more weeks!
5d3 and a99 look really close taking the full image into account. there are parts of the photo where a99 looks sharper but overall 5d3 looks a bit sharper.
But then we have the jpeg engine and the lens characteristics which could make the difference.
Considering the similar characteristics softness and sharpness at the different parts of the photo I think it is the lens difference between the a99 and d800/d600 as the d800 and d600 are sharp and soft in the same places.
Real happy to see the A99 being competitive 🙂
Competitive? Did you see the latest ISO comparisons? The A99 is behind D800, D600, 5D3 in terms of noise.
In other words: beaten by the D800 despite higher resolution, beaten by D600 despite lower price, beaten by 5D3 despite Canon’s lesser sensor technology.
I wouldn’t call that competitive, at least not at the A99’s price.
I don’t quite agree. I think they all looked pretty darn good. A very good group of cameras. The noise looked very good and well controlled. The appearance of noise has a more pleasant appearance than noise with previous sensors. That is with all the cameras you have mentioned. However, while the noise of the mk3 was good, the canon appears to lose detail compared to both Nikon and Sony in an effort to reduce noise. But I think that is a testament to the technology. They have to be close for you to see one thing and I see another. When I purchased the 850, I easily agreed with the fact the 850 had poor iso performance but it looks like the 99 has no problem handling it. However, I only looked up through 12800.
Interesting….
Such a different appreciation of the same picture
Maybe there is something wrong with my glasses
Or with yours?
To me, the quality is similar
i only can cough for ur words..what is ur latest ISO comparison mean? and
“In other words: beaten by the D800 despite higher resolution, beaten by D600 despite lower price, beaten by 5D3 despite Canon’s lesser sensor technology.”
then u are truly a sony haters, u know why sony dun wan go for that high resolution? i bet u dunno
and why a99 is expensive than D600, u are blind actually
beaten by 5D3 sensor? then why mention D800 AND D600? what sensor are them, and what score they get..
no need explain watever to u, if u are keep looking at sonyalpharumors here u should be able to see some good test and SOME CANON USER REVIEW ON THIS A99..saying better dynamic range than his cannon 5D3, iso performance is like the same etc…haters
Sorry Mike, but the A99 only loses to the D800 in terms of low ISO detail, at higher ISO’s the noise on the D800 becomes unacceptable. In certain areas of the image the D600 is better, in others the A99 is better. But again the noise is a finer grain, not that blotchy stuff we see in the Nikon images, so the A99’s noise cleans up and prints better.
The 5d3 is a little cleaner and more detailed, but those were jpeg’s and they can still be cleaned up in LR4, raw’s will be better. Again, in print the difference is wiped out, you can’t see the difference. Take the 6400 image from all 4 cameras and print 8×10’s or 11×17’s and then tell me the A99 is far behind. You’ll see, you’re wrong.
And lets not forget the 5d3 is $700 more in the U.S. than the A99 if you buy on Amazon. Then you’ll come back with the ‘D600 is cheaper’ BS, but it still doesn’t have Steadyshot so all my lenses will have IBIS, 60p, AF-d, weather sealed and so on…
they are set at 23rd here to for australia still according to the sony site. so hopefully ill have mine by end of week
Well, Malaysia is expecting availability in the shops by this coming Wednesday! 24th October.
