A request to our sources: info about new NEX lenses needed.

During the last weeks I recieved pieces of info from different sources about the future NEX lenses. I am trying to order them but I need a little bit of help. Those are the questions to my sources:

1) When is the Zeiss 24mm f/1.7 going to be announced?
2) Some of you sent me info about future lenses but without mentioning if those lenses are for E or A mount. Can you please add that info? An example is the 55-200mm lens someone told me about…
3) Sigma, Tamron and other third party lens makers are very likely to announce new NEX lenses. Some details about that?

Thanks a lot! 🙂

  1. I know they’re not on the suggested list for announcement yet, but I would love a 55-60mm and 85-90mm type prime lenses, along with a 10-18mm type prime. All high quality. Would make a great two or three day kit on a higher end nex body, if we do get this 24/1.7.

  2. Sony Germany wrote on Facebook before the earthquake, tsunami, nuklear…

    It says 7 NEX-lenses are coming till the end of 2012 – this year the Zeiss wide-angle, a tele-zoom, a macro- and a portrait-lens.

      1. actually you have been miss understood.

actually i stealth someone idea who really luv carl zeiss. that guy turn carl into cow in photo, try imaging superman’s head replaced by cow head with two horns. the S sign replaced with Cow on the custom. pretty cool and creative way to express cow zeiss (carl zeiss) power lol…

actually, you are see it a cup of half empty, other see it as a half full 😀

  3. NEX (3 AF lens) line need 40mm and 70mm pancake lenses. I still didn’t get a point why for 2 cm thick body Sony planing 10-15cm lenses. It seems all lens program is about NEX camcorders, where size does not matter so much.

    1. Simply geometry and physics: For a given sensor size (d), you need a certain focal length (d/(2*tan(alpha/2))) to get a desired field of view (alpha). And the diameter of the lens if as easy as the focal length divided by the numerical aperture (“speed”) of the lens. The rest are the physical sizes/dimensions of corrective lenses and their technical assembly. 😉

        1. No they didn’t. Because of the mirror box, Pentax K mount has a registration distance (mount to sensor distance) of 45.5mm, which is 27.5mm longer than mirrorless Sony NEX/e-mount. So, in order to make the same lens for NEX, Pentax would have to add 27.5mm to the length of their current pancakes, which makes them not quite so pancake-y anymore. 🙂

We all need to stop measuring lens size as a determining size factor, now that there are such wildly varying registration distances out there. It would be more prudent to measure for the front of the lens to the sensor, or, maybe even measure from the front of the lens to the rear of the camera, if figuring out overall volume is the goal.

p.s. this is also why Samsung NX can make equivalent lenses to NEX that are 7.5mm shorter.

          1. Agree with Vlad, less than 4 cm is pancake for sure. It is obvious I’m not expert in optics, hovever I could easy figure out, if total size lens+body is constant, then NEX system is generally usless, or at least at tele lens point view.

  4. There is one reason why I still have no NEX: only 3 e-mount lenses available,
and the 18-200 looks ugly on the NEX.
    A Zeiss 24/1.7 sounds good.
I would like to see a Zeiss 17-50/2,8 for 999,-
or a Sony Lens 16-85/3,5-5,6 for 499,- and a NEX is mine!

      1. Although I see your point, Richard, focal lengths are relatively arbitrary for 35mm, as well. We’d probably be more likely to see a 55mm or 60mm, rather than a 57mm.

      2. That’s because you’re not thinking long term.
Eventually we’ll have a FF nex and all these awkward lens sizes will be irrelevant.

Zeiss does not make apsc lenses, and there’s no reason why they should start now

          1. didn’t realize the 16-80 was aps-c. thats unusual.

either way, I remember zeiss releasing a statement a while back mentioning that they would only produce FF lenses.

        1. I’m thinking about the cameras these are going to be used on, and that they’re APS-C. Whether we have a full-frame NEX eventually or not is not relevent. I simply believe APS-C lenses should have coinciding focal lengths to make them relevent to common focal length equivelents.

16-80 full-frame? That lens would be absolutely massive, and such a poor performer if it was, or ludicrously expensive.

          1. When zeiss made their first lenses for sony they hadn’t even started thinking about the a900. Yet they were all pretty much full frame. Why do you think that is? It’s the only logical goal for any pro camera. If the nex line ever hopes to go pro, which it looks like it will, then ff is expected.

  5. The entire system of NEX so far, from lenses to the la-ea1, is designed for aps-c/super35, and I think it is a pipe dream to expect that to change anytime soon.

The upcoming Zeiss prime for NEX will certainly be designed for aps-c, judging by the size and current lenses.

    1. And that’s why it’s called the ea1. These things can and will be upgraded. The ea2 can obviously be made to accommodate ff. No reason to limit their lenses to apsc when they don’t have to.

  6. Spent some time at the recent Focus show researching mirrorless options. Sony had mock ups of the four new NEX lenses for 2011, plus three more for 2012. None of them were anywhere near a final version, just a barrel with a lens mount and an insert where there should be a front element. Staff on the stand had no idea when they would be available other than “to be introduced in 2011”, they had no real information about them, nor did they seem that interested in talking about them. Also, there doesn’t seem to be any realisation in Sony of the desirability for compact lenses to partner compact bodies.

It seems a coincidence that the NEX range has best mirrorless IQ, Sony themselves (at least in UK) seem to see it as a not very important poor sister to the DSLR range and pitched much lower down market. I hope I’m wrong about that and a serious body does emerge to partner a much better lens range…..
