Our friend Tony Northup made a very simple introduction video to the new A7rII based on the information he gathered online. Unlike the Canon 5Ds 50MP camera which is just a normal 5DmarkII cam on steroids the new A7rII packs a lot of innovations! Tony explains them all and the A7rII seems to be not only a good A7r successor but also adds features missed on the A7s (like internal 4K and good phase detection AF system). Sony did indeed listen to the customers feedback and fixed most of the stuff that did not work well or that were missing. I can’t wait to see how the A7sII will be 🙂
My only major Drawback of the A7rII is the quite high price 🙁
One more thing: One of the very few differences with the A7II is the lock mode on the dial:

Facepalm.
What could the A7S II have better than the A7RII??? (except the Higher sensitivity, not much higher with the new backlight technology)
A stacked sensor 5k readout…
No, it’ll be that much higher. Also, 1:1 pixel use in 4k and higher DR. Those 3 things make it absolutely worth it.
BSI + 2x oversampling for 4k means that most of the advantages an “S” might have due to larger pixel sites are lost.
That has yet to be seen. I look forward to the comparisons.
Hopefully, but I’m afraid the 2x oversampling might be the thing that reduces the camera’s video quality, not make it an a7s killer.
Global Shutter.
Like Carl says, no line skipping, full frame 4k, and the ability to use a deeper (more forgiving) focus f stop in reduced light situations. The a7rii looks like a great stills camera that also takes impressive video, whereas an a7sii would be a great video camera that also takes impressive low light stills.
It’ll have the stacked sensor tech of the RX10ll…… shhh, that’s between us though!
I do like Tony’s videos! He is very objective and always point the advantages and the drawbacks about the main brands. That’s why I’m waiting for his technical analysis and comparison 🙂
By the way, I agree 100% with Tony… touchscreen is very useful and it saves you time! I don’t know why people think it’s not a pro feature ¿?
After trolling around forums and websites for hours, nothing new for me.
But as always a very good make summary video from Tony!!
Sony should watch his videos – all his Cons could be easily improved by Sony – and all his Cons are real Cons.
Has anyone looked at the battery life figures? Dpreview specs show a CIPA rating of 290 shots. That’s laughable! They really need to work on that for v3.
i made 620 pics last sunday with a7r. Just need to switch off when u re not really using the camera. I think there is some kind of first cold start, but then it’s ok. U can’t compare with dslr about autonomy. ANd i don’t want one heavier camera.
10% left at the end
Use Airplane Mode – that saves battery via turning off Wi-Fi/NFC that is unneeded when shooting. Also, keep in mind that ALL mirrorless cameras have a constant sensor readout and EVF. Unlike DSLR – where you only see real world through glass hole that some call OVF. 😉
Get a grip! No really I mean get the battery grip it is a necessary accessory (although that is an oxymoron..) I agree battery life is going to be worse than on the original A7r, ouch.
It seems Sony just married the a7r and a7s line and made the a7rII. With the specs out of the a7rII, I don’t see an a7sII. There really is not need for it at this point…
Can’t wait to see what Nikon has in store with these sensors 🙂
It also seems that this might be the first true Mirrorless to give Nikon and Canon a run for their money.
I can’t wait for this beast to be released!!!!
Why? Despite being a BSI, I doubt that the new 42 mpx sensor will be better (or even on par) than the 12 mpx of the A7s in low light. Give me an A7s with this updated body, updated EVF, faster af (especially AF-C), 5 axis stab (to be even better in low light for still subjects), full compatibility with A and EF mount (and maybe F mount in the near future?) and I take it. It would be a killer camera for covering events…
My betA7sII will have some significant HFR improvements. It should, at least 120 in 4K. The slow-mo looks quite good from the new RX models and I’d love to see this (at least double or triple of the current model) in the next release.
This.
Because you can do internal 4K, it doesn’t mean you automatically gained an A7s on your A7rII.
What a freaking joke!
I really cannot image when I could lock mode dial 🙂 It is quite unless but I am very unhappy that there isn’t 1:1 image format mode. It is most modern image proportion ratio, which was available at Rolleiflex TLR and Hasselblad 1000F. But it isn’t still available with A7RII.
The Canon 5D (mk I) did cost $3300 back in 2005. And that was called cheap then.
But I myself would like a cheap and good FF model serie, like A5 or something.
With some good and cheap primes, 24mm, 35mm, 85mm. What about $1500 including a 35mm
prime? I like it 🙂
When id the term “pixel binning” get redefined as “pixel skipping”. In other words, dumping pixel reading in the waste bin (probably by not reading them dues to bandwidth constraints) and combining pixel outputs (more rigorously, combining photosite electron charges before digitisation). Properly done, the (combining) version of pixel binning produces good results in that it increases DR and improves noise performance (for a given output size). It’s rather like downsizing still images (albeit note that true pixel-binning is slightly different to software down-sizing).
What Tony Northrup is referring to as “pixel binning” is “pixel skipping”, also known as “line skipping”. Those are both bad things.
It’s very unfortunate when what were originally well defined technical terms get confused like this. It’s doubly (at least) unfortunate when the two different interpretations lead to virtually opposite effects. The “good” binning (combining) and the “bad” binning (skipping).
Something similar happens when people refer to “downsizing” and “downsampling”. They are not the same thing. Downsampling is sampling at a lower frequency (spatially in the case of still images). Spatial downsampling is related to pixel/line skipping.
Technical terms are often very missleading.
I still don’t understand why it is called: “Back Side Illuminated”
For me the front-side of a sensor faces towards the lens and the back-side of the sensor is dark – always! And there is no lamp illuminating the dark side of the sensor. Why it’s not called “Back Side Circuit” or “Back Side Wired” or something like that?
It has to do with how they are made. My understanding is BSI really was a technical term that marketing people decided to run with. To a sensor manufacturer/technician the name makes sense.
Joel – You’re spot on. Usually the process of depositing and then etching the metal to make the gates and circuits was done over the photo sensitive part of the sensor. Instead, smack-dab in the middle of the manufacturing process, Sony flipped the wafer over and depositing the circuits on the side opposite of the photo-diodes. For sensors with little photo diodes, (1 to 2 µm), such as you might find in a cell-phone, this technique helped increase the percentage of sensor that was photo-sensitive [aka Fill-Factor].
The other, and not well published, benefit of having those parts of the circuits on the opposite side of the substrate was it allowed more flexibility in design. I seem to recall one of the Sony engineers kinda’ excited about the flexibility and I believe he implied it was easier to have ADC earlier in the circuitry than it would have on a typical CMOS design and having Analog to Digital conversion earlier in the process is actually a really big deal.
If you say it is just a marketing term that has nothing to do with the actual technic, I am okay with.
But the words “Back Side Illuminated” have nothing to do with the way this sensor type works. But maybe it’s because I am not native english and illuminated has an additional meaning I am not aware of.
regular sensors have circuitry on top of the sensor. BSI has the sensor on top; so compared to the original design, the back of the sensor (of the original design) is illuminated in BSI.
Does that mean, there is a LED-lamp that illuminates the back?!?
I was not asking how BSI sensors work – I just find the wording very missleading.
The term makes perfect sense as far as the sensor construction is concerned. That’s what it describes. It’s the normal industry term for the technology and is used by other sensor manufacturers. As such, you’ll just have to get used to it.
sony site also refers to this as pixel binning
http://www.sony.net/Products/di/en-us/products/dkw5/index.html?contentsTop=1
I’m not surprised. A bit like Sony redefining the word “translucent”, as in translucent mirror. It’s not. Then there’s 5 axis stabilisation when there are only 3 axis in a 3D universe (albeit Sony weren’t the first to use the term).
There are 6 axis in 3d universe, 3 directional and 3 rotational. And they are used as such in every 3d (CAD) software. Also known as 6 degrees of freedom.
No, there are six degrees of freedom, but only three axes (I have to correct myself, as the plural of axis is axes). Any point in a 3D space is defined by three coordinate positions (just as any point on a 2D plane is located by 2 coordinate positions).
What there are is rotation about, and translational movement along each axis. Those are called “degrees of freedom”. That’s two degrees of freedom for each axis, making 6 degrees of freedom in total.
What the Sony “5-axis” stabilisation system compensates for is is rotational motion round the X, Y & Z axes along with translational motion along the X & Y axes. That’s using the convention of the X & Y axes being parallel to the plane of the sensor and the Z axas along the centre line of the lens.
So, please don’t confuse axis with freedom of movement. They are related, but there are only 3 axis in a 3D Cartesian space.
If CAD packages are describing this as a total of 6 axes, then that’s simply wrong.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_coordinate_system#Three_dimensions
I’m just going to quote you from few posts bellow this one ” It’s the normal industry term for the technology and is used by other sensor manufacturers. As such, you’ll just have to get used to it.” 😉
There’s a difference. IBIS is accurate. 5 axis certainly isn’t. My mathematics lecturers at universe would have had a fit.
Not that it really matters, what I was raising was how Sony (and other) manufacturers are debasing technical terms through misuse. Hence “pixel binning” as well as “translucent mirror”. Mostly it doesn’t matter too much as it tends to become a marketing term, but the pixel binning one is very unfortunate as it is (almost) opposite to the original definition.
Just following up on whether this is the normal term for CAD software, I took a look at two of the most popular CAD packages (Turbocad and Autocad), and both only allow for three axes allowing movements around and along those axes. So if it’s normal in the 3D CAD world to refer to these as 6 separate axes, it’s certainly not universal.
well tony is still an idiot … amazing how many watch his crap.
I wonder if you’ll be able to assign crop/FF mode, mic volume and other frequently used functions to a custom button? Can you do a custom white balance without going from video to photo mode and back – major pain. Can you do anything with the shutter while shooting video since the same puny video record button is back? Just some of the reasons why the A7 cameras poor ergonomics and UI didn’t work for me, too much damn menu diving for basic functions. The fattened spec sheet still can’t change the poor usability. As appealing as those specs are, I can’t live with those issues at $3200. YMMV.
they need to put somethin new on the next one ^^
Sorry for off topic, but what about a6100/a7000? Any news? Any chance to see it this month?
thats right, ive also been lusting after this rumored a6000 successor. sths gotta be in store for us cheap skates 🙂 a7000 with ibis and bsi sensor, oh the shivers…
For someone who can’t even afford on of these heavyweight bodies, it already has features I would be disappointed in – USB 2.0, non articulating screen, no touch screen, locking mode knob, etc. Isn’t $3200 enough to get these basics? Sony oversells ideas and keeps you wanting them in the next camera…glad I can’t afford to drop 3k on this one.
,, Sony did indeed listen to the customers feedback”
OK Sony listen my wish list for the a7sII:
Give us, with whatever for a new Technology, the ISO 819200!
Eliminate the purple light in High Iso’s on the a7sII
Eliminate the Blue Light distortion problem
More Dynamic Range
Global Shutter
skip most of what you have on the list, you can deal with it in post… but global shutter is the only missing link that users can’t get around.
I mean more dynamic range in video creative or S Log mode and in JPG mode, not in RAW.
I tried to eliminate the blue distortion and the purple light in photos –
The purple Light overlaid the real colors and you have no chance to recolor the real colors behind the purple light
The blue blooming distortion destroyed adjacent pixels- no chance to rebuilt it
You can push up the ISO in Post Processing up to 819200, but it is very noisy and the edges, based on noise filter process, are blurred. The a7sII must be a higher light absorption in/to the sensor as the a7s. Or the sensor must be more light sensitive.
Conclusion: My points in the wish can’t make complete unseen in the post. It’s need a new camera-> the a7sII 🙂
My wish list for a7sii would add:
no mp creep (aka keep or lower current megapixel count)
fully articulated touch screen (including touch AF in video)
10 bit internal 4k (or at least 10 bit output)
I too would love to see if they can squeeze out even more DR
And… I know this is asking too much even on a fantasy list but…
some kind of internal electronic ND filter.
And oh yeah, why not, larger if not full sized hdmi out.
Ever get the feeling that Sony is putting 100% of all its energy and thinking into E Mount and the Pro Video industry? It seems like that is easily where you will find their most high tech and ground breaking stuff.
Especially “Pros” are very often the biggest dinosaurs and against everything that makes life easy!
“Pros” had a hard time learning to do a well job with a long-winded tool. If the tool gets more convenient, even an Amateur can get a similar result with much less effort. That’s why real “Pros” never get tired, finding explanations why the hard way is the better one 🙂
You guys think anymore Sony cameras are going to be released soon or willl they wait for the next set of releases?
Well, you never know. If Leica was to introduce their own A7r wannabe like they did with their improved RX1 design (Q) then maybe Sony will come and do another release on the same day.
Obviously it has to be Leica because they didn’t care much for the Canon 5Ds launch…
This announcement was timed to overshadow 5Ds/r shipping date (tomorrow)
A7rII is priced accordingly.
It is higher than the A7r at launch, but it gives you what the Canon 5Ds does (OK, 8px less… but at this height you are getting 90% of the pixels anyways) but then adds 4K (quality to be seen stills) and IBIS and likely bette dynamic range in a more compact package.
And most important: (if rumors are true)
Fast AF with any adapted electronic A-Mount or Canon EF lens.
Finally, a camera that I’m willing to go in debt for. I already purchased the f1,4 35mm and pre-ordered the f2,8 90mm Macro. While I will not be one of the early adopters I will have it by Christmas. BTW, if that last part offended anybody that’s too damn bad.
Nothing like aggressive Christians. >Shakes head.
I know right. Was there really a need to add the offended part…. Its great you believe in a holiday that was stolen from the pagans. PS. Jesus was not born in the month of December. Crazy how many people know so little about there own religion.
T’was CR3 only at the time.
Hahaha. In that case your name is offensive and aggressive. You should change your name, Chris!
Making debts for a gadget that gets sour faster than milk? I’m sorry for you. Seriously!
For you I suppose I’ve to include an LOL in my future posts when I’m poking fun.
OK. I take it back. I’m not sorry for you. 😉
what exactly is great?
blahblha from a greyhead….
Is canon 5ds R worth $3.899 as priced at B&H? I’m not a Sony Fan boy. I’m a Canon user, but in my opinion this camera is better than 5ds R and cost less.
Well putting money in video makes sense because they also push 4K TV which lack much commercial content so pushing 4K video recorders makes perfect sense as its the only way some people will be able to justify their 4K TV.
Don’t complain about the price! Their is so much packed into this camera. Its worth every dime.
Agreed. It would cost much more to add features like this to other cameras. For example: A7s, Shogun, and stabilization device would run about $4000 – and lacking MPs.
Anyone know anything about the “weather sealing”? Sony stopped using that term for the A7r but yet again we see them state “weather sealing” and not “moisture resistant”. There’s a huge different. Weather sealing should be able to handle splashes of salty water etc.
Here is copy/paste from sony footnotes:
” *12 This camera is designed for optimal dust and moisture resistance, but is not waterproof or splash-proof. “
Is that mean you can’t use this under the rain or heavy snow? What do they exactly mean by “OPTIMAL dust and moisture resistance”.
Look at response from LittleCam, if it gets broken due to water-splashes, Sony does not care about and you have to pay the repair cost. So A7x are not so weather sealed.
There are only two trully weather sealed ILC cameras from Sony, SLT-A99 and SLT-A77M2.
So it’s in the footnotes yet they still use the term “weather proof” … okay…
Yep… marketing… weather sealed but not so weather sealed… :/
Weatherseals is not a “protected”kind of word, so it means nothing. When a manufacturer is not giving you the garantee that your camera will be repaired from water damage, the these words means nothing. You need an IP code that tells you how water proof a camera is. Without these codes everybody can claim his camera is waterproof as long as you keep it dry!
I think you can use the camera is weather-sealed and moisture resistant, but if it gets broken due to water-splashes, Sony does not care about and you have to pay the repair cost
Exactly.
There are only two trully weather sealed ILC cameras from Sony, SLT-A99 and SLT-A77M2.
well, if you really think these things will make the difference, this camera is maybenot for you 😉
Also, the EVF hood seems better shaped. Wondering how much better the EVF really is!
I shoot nikon and let me just say I love what sony is doing in every way. I love them. BUT, without uncompressed raw which I’ve read conflicting reports on, I cannot really envision this as my next camera. For that price, I don’t expect to leave data behind the way the A7R did. I hope this camera will fix that issue over its predecessor because other than that, it looks spectacular.
If you don’t need all the packed in features, just shoot a D810. Can’t go wrong with that.
But I already have that. I need to get rid of bulk. I’m so tired of these heavy ass Nikon bodies and lenses. Plus the video of my D810 is so muddy for today’s standards. The super35 crop full readout 4K output on this camera looks freaking amazing. I could never get anything this good on my D810 and I’ve tried even the ninja recorder method: the sampling method nikon uses on their 36.6MP sensor for video is just poor
I see. Well, time to join the darkside over here then.
I trust the D800/D810 the most, but the A7 line has some unique advantages: weight, size, articulating display, so you can get down to the ground level, focus peaking, and the accuracy of the contrast-detect (eye-detect) AF when motion is not an issue. The D810 live view is very slow and cumbersome, and it doesn’t work with the viewfinder. They’re just two entirely different cameras. I wish Nikon lenses could AF on the Sony with an adapter.
When you shot with the A7r, what data you feel was left behind compared to your Nikons?
In my experience, compression amounts to what would appear to be a small percentage of file leniency in post. Especially when trying to maximise shadows, artifacts can show. It does not happen often, but it does. It does, to me, beg the question whether there could be more visual (important word here) information in these shadows or highlights if the file was uncompressed. So, as a person that I imagined shot with both, Sony and Nikon, I ask what was there that you saw that left the A7r behind?
http://diglloyd.com/blog/2014/20140212_2-SonyA7-RawDigger-posterization.html
again, price is key here. I’m actually OK with the price otherwise.
Seen that. That’s not what I asked and this scenario isn’t everyone’s scenario. It is a given that lossless compression (ala Nikon, Canon) will be beneficial for those who need it, no questions about that. What’s important is to get more samples of where this happens and how it compares to Nikon which uses the same sensor. A more quantifiable approach is welcome to know exactly how much and where there is loss.
point being, I don’t have to sit around and think if I should grab my nikon for this scene because I’ll regret it in post when I see the sony 11-bit issues show up. I don’t want to think about it. I don’t want to worry about it. We photogs already have enough problems to deal with: vibration, ISO noise, exposure, moire, focus shift, etc. Now one more darn thing, compression artifacts.
Just work. That is all. My D810 is one less thing I need to think about: I set it to lossless raw the day I had it. I will never switch it off. For 3K on this amazing camera, I’m kind of hoping that same experience.
I’m sorry if your problems are technical ones. I often worry about how to improve my work, get more work or get the good people to work with. I stopped thinking of ISO noise, exposure etc. a long time ago and I didn’t need to have any particular brand of camera for that.
The Sony RAW files break down when you push and pull it. Nothing like Sony or even Canon RAW files break down in same manner.
They update the camera in so many great ways, but still limit it to lossy compressed RAW files. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t give their customers the option to shoot in a lossless file format, even if it is compressed. So, it is not a PRO camera, that is for sure. And, it may not be overpriced considering all of the features they have provided. But, as a camera, it is shocking that they sacrifice output for whatever reason.
If they could change that via a firmware update, I would consider getting one. But, if not, it definitely is not worth it, in my opinion.
I may have read over it, but has Sony stated what the base ISO is for SLOG on any of the new cameras?
Haven’t seen any details on that either. Don’t think it’s been mentioned yet.
supposedly ISO800 (the a7S is at 3200 and fs7 ISO2000)
it does have a locking mode dial.
One of my biggest hopes is for the sensor to be a bit nice with ZM lenses. I really want to have a closer performance to Leica M when using A7 cams. I can’t remember who tried the newer 35mm ZM 1.4 on both, but even on the A7r, with its allegedly offset lenses, the lens wasn’t as impressive as it was on Leica.
This camera already ticks all of my boxes except for the look(I like the NEX-7 type better) and two of which unverified, one is this and the other is whether the “silent mode” means a full electronic shutter.
I know. The design of the NEX 7 is great and I would love to see an A7 series with NEX 7 design. More than just the placement of the EVF, to me, the Tri-Navi concept was great because with 3 dials always activated you had access to the three things that change exposure. It was brilliant and it baffles me a bit why Sony departed from that design. Maybe it is to attract SLR users with SLR-like body.
To S.Yu, the A7rII has an EFC and a full electronic curtain. the last one can give some artiacts with moving objects.
To the Truth:
The A7 has the tri navy build in, only the dials are in an other place (one on the front, one on top in the back the third the dial on the back…
The formfactor will allways be a point for many. Some like the DSLR style, some like the RF style. For me the place of the EVF in the middle is better as I’m a left eyed person who touch the screen with his nose every time when looking true the EVF of my A6000, but I like the looks of the A6000 better, So I accepted the downside of the place of the EVF.
Good thing I checked, or I never would’ve known you replied to me since you put your reply under the wrong comment…
I like the dials exactly where they are on NEX-7, as for the a7 designs, I find the two buttons on top of that ridge at the back very hard to reach, and the ridge digs into my thumbs every time I try, I sincerely hope that they fixed the anti-ergonomic ridge on the II and made the two buttons easier to press (especially when you need the right one to delete photos and the left one is the menu button) but from the pics I’d say they’ve changed nothing…
ISO800 and comes with a HDMI cable lock stop it from being pulled.
Sony certainly has put a touch of details in it…
at 5:58 he’s saying that the a7ii focusing system is similar. I stopped watching.
Tell me the difference between A7ii and A7Rii AF.
Then tell me the difference between SLT-AF and A7Rii AF.
And then tell me the difference between SLR-AF and A7Rii AF.
And then let me know which word you would use instead of ‘similar’
This is the problem with Northrup he generalizes to the point of spreading erroneous information. Both A7 mk2 and A7Rmk2 AF work on a similar concept but the execution and features are VERY different. Just the fact that PDAF can be used for SLR lens focusing is huge because in all other Sony cams it is just used for tracking. F
Again: What was your word instead of “similar”?
Simplification is misleading when it removes context and/or presents opinion as fact. I believe that Tony does both. For example, both OSPDAF systems are similar in that use pairs of pixels on the sensor to triangulate the positions. However, there maybe differences in how fast those pixels are scanned, whether they can be scanned and processed differently than the other pixels, how much light they take in, etc. I can enumerate the differences between the two because there is a lot unknown about the A7R2. Cetainly the performance is different and the underlying sensor tech is very different.
Could Sony add direct OSPDAF support with a firmware update? Maybe. I doubt it and I doubt it would work nearly as well.
Similar does not mean same but without delineating at least a few differences that’s what comes across.
I can not tell you why A7Rii can work with SLR lenses and A7ii not. But as both AF-Systems base on OSPDAF I would not be astonished if a simple software update can make A7ii do the same.
The question is, if Sony want this really to do, or if there is a real technical problem that prevents A7 to work with SLR-lenses.
The way Tony spreads information is in my opinion a very good one. Simplyfing is in most cases way better than stepping into details. It’s the nerd not seeing a wood because there are too many trees.
# of PDAF focus points. in answer to all of your questions.
okay – more focus points. Is this all you find?
Are they different?
Is this another concept?
Is A7ii only contrast based?
Has it any mirror?
I said PDAF which stands for Phase Detection Focus Points. both the a7ii and the a7rii has PDAF and contrast focus points.
My original point was that you can’t test lenses with the A7ii and claim that the a7rii will have SIMILAR performance because of its SIMILAR AF system because It’s not SIMILAR.
You seem to have a lot of questions that have nothing to do with that point. I am sure google can help you figure the answer.
Your original point was inappropriate – nothing else.
You still did not give a answer to my question – and I wanted just ONE single word you would use instead of “similar”.
I was not asking google. I was asking you, that know-it-all person that thinks he is so clever to make an ignorant statement like yours.
Until first tests nobody knows about the real AF speed of A7Rii.
But loot what we know so far:
– A7ii is 30% faster than A7 (according Sony)
– A7Rii is 40% faster than A7R (according Sony)
– A7 is a bit faster than A7R (reviews)
According to that it looks like A7Rii AF performance is ‘similar’ to A7ii – and I was really disappointed when I read those numbers. I still hope real-world tests shows that A7Rii is much faster than that – somewhere in NX1 range.
You are making my point for me. We don’t know. that’s why we can’t make assumptions. I think you should read before commenting and arguing. Good day, troll boy.
I did’t make any point for you – not at all.
And I am afraid to ask where – I would just read stupid excuses.
– a troll boy
I think the mode dial is also taller than before…
I watched with small interested yesterday the video (there was 8000 views at then) just to see am I right again about him.
He has no knowledge of the camera, just gathering clicks in panic to get money.
I only noticed then that he said that he doesn’t know anything about anything in the camera, he made guesses and then estimations and really just talked about the camera that he didn’t know anything. He tried to look professional by placing other cmaeras on the table and comparing to them etc.
It was pain to watch to the end because the information what there was presented better in three Olympus videos.
Sorry, help me. I’m used to german terms. Lock mode?
The mode dial is lockable, to prevent accidental adjustment. The term “lock mode” is very confusing indeed.
Ah, thanks!
Yeah. I’d call it mode lock. Similar to caps lock, wheel lock.
I’m not buying this one, but I’m waiting for A7sII. My next camera has to be super low light. Until then I guess I have to continue building muscle with my heavy D4 and D810.
Im saving for both a7r II and a7s II
Nah… almost the same
Canon $3899 / 50 mp = $78 / mp
Sony $3199 / 42 mp = $76 / mp
What a stupid comparison! The Nikon D4 costs $6000/16= $375 / MP
A 20MP Nokia lumia costs about$300 so that makes it pixel price: $15!
The number of pixels tells you nothing! It is what a camera can or can’t do. The Canon and Sony pictures could look very much the same, the Sony could be better or the Canon could be better, all depending on more factors then number of pixels alone.
I can’t tell what camera is best as neiter of these cameras are realy well tested jet.
ROFL
I never expected someone being so stupid to take this joke as a serious comment
LMFAO
Thank you.
That’s the very first explanation, that really makes sense to me.
Not true. I had Nikon, Canon and now Sony. They do not break down as you say. Show a sample at least. I’m looking for more samples of the compression cost other than the digilloyd and the high contrast artifact samples on the net.
make it 2500$ and i switch from canon.. i will throw in a metabones for 350 dollar to use my excellent canon glas.
Wait a year. Price should reduce by then for sure.
What kind of shooting do you do that the compressed RAWs are of such an importance for you? I’ve seen situations where the compressed RAWs do give some artifacts, but most of the time the RAWs are just great.
So for me it would be of no porblem as those situations are not very often there and even then I would not give that much…
Did you see those other two cameras launced? Some nice new things too… And not hi end video or E-mount
The prices of all three cameras are absolutely insane!
5K for a A7Rii + 35mm/1.4 ? Seems we are already at 50% Leica madness. In a few years, they get caught by SoCaNikon.
1K for a 1″ zoom compact?
The ugly thing is, that the prices for used A7,A7R,A7S will remain high.
These increasements are way out of proportion. My income does not grow in two digit percentage steps.
As mentioned before, these cameras becoming more and more toys for wealthy folks or gear wh*res who even skip a meal that they can afford their gadgeds, probably to compensate some deficiencies in other areas.
Am I just jealous? Definitely not. Angry? Very.
So sad. I’m out.
Do I wish it were cheaper? Yes. But this is the first A7 (on paper anyway) truly up to top tier standards and priced accordingly. The A7RII and FE35 MSRP are the same or better than the starting MSRP of the 5D3 and D810. The 5D3R MSRP is much higher! None of those cameras are better spec’ed except for dual card slots and battery life.
