The X-E1 is “cheap” (less than $1000)

Photorumors posted full X-E1 specifications. Here they are:

  • Same 16MP sensor as in the X-Pro1 (with max ISO of 25,600)
  • 6 fps
  • Light magnesium body
  • Improved AF speed
  • Price: bellow $1000
  • To be released before Christmas
  • Same video recording capabilities as the X-Pro1
  • Mic input
  • EVF only (not hybrid as the X-Pro1)
  • Two colors: black and silver
  • Pull 25 ISO to simulate Velvia in JPEG mode

The price of the current X PRO 1 is around $1700. Less than $1000 sounds very cheap compared to the PRO 1!

  1. This could be very appealing, even without a dramatic improvement in AF speed. I wish they would switch to a better EVF.

  2. “Less than $1000 sounds very cheap compared to the PRO 1″…

On the other hand, it probably means that X-PRO1 is pretty much expensive.

  3. Seems Fuji has been looking at competitor’s pricing.
The X Pro1 is far too expensive. (Given it’s many flaws)
Still – if the E-X1 isn’t as mature as the competion, the price is still too high. The NEX-6 for instance will be very mature, as the Oly EM-5 and a Pany GX2 (if there is any with built in EVF)
Lenses is a strong side of the Fuji offering. Yes I know they arre few and not all are in production yet. BUT they have/will have the right lenses! No shit/kit lenses. The right primes and the right zooms. m43 has many lenses, but the good ones are more expensive than Fuji.

  4. So close, yet so far Fuji, had this camera only been able to shoot video at 30/60fps, it would’ve been ideal for my needs with a 55-200-ish lens on top of what’s available…

  5. So it’s an X-Pro1 with improved AF and without OVF, for $700 less. Not bad.

It also means that the X-Pro2 (rumored to be more expensive than X-Pro1) will be a huge improvement over the X-Pro1 (otherwise who would pay twice more than for the X-E1?).

  6. Wow… same sensor and therefore comparable image quality for less than 1000$ would be a nice deal. I was expecting the X100-sensor and not the newer one to keep the costs low. Seems as if it is damn expensive to produce the Hybrid-Viewinder and changing it against an EVF cuts the costs a lot.

  7. Meh…

Fuji’s EVF is terrible, on the X100 and Xpro1. Hopefully since its not a hybrid, it’ll be much better resolution and have a faster refresh rate. But I’m not holding my breath. Its probably recycled from the other X cameras. Better AF? It can go nowhere but up, hopefully we’ll also see improvement in manual focus. Its insane how much you have to turn the focus ring on the XP1 to snap focus. The video on all Fuji cameras is terrible, no manual controls. I really wish Fuji would put a little more emphasis on this – especially with a mic input – as the Fuji colors are spectacular. It could be a hybrid photo/video beast.

After the success of the X100, Fuji really missed the mark with the XP1, it still feels like a beta test camera. I would hope the new one is released with the issues sorted, but given Fuji’s track record with its last few cameras, this one is going to be full of bugs. Sad really because the images look nice. After experiencing the performance and IBIS of the EM5 – along with much sharper images, my Xpro1 lust was cured.

  8. Well I feel like a sucker. I assumed that Fuji wouldn’t screw over early adopters. But they have. Now I know some people will say “If it was worth $1700 to you, then stop complaining.” But the thing is, it was never worth that price. But that was my only option if I wanted a camera of that shape, with that sensor, with those lenses. If I had known that I only needed to wait 6 months and I could have it for more than 700 less, with better AF, smaller body etc, I definitely would have waited. Almost everyone would have. Good job alienating the early adopters Fuji

    1. And if you only wait 2 years, an even better camera will come out for the same price.

If you want to value shop, you buy on the trailing edge. Early adopters always get screwed on price, so if you’re price sensitive and the item isn’t essential, then you probably shouldn’t buy early.

      1. “If I had known that I only needed to wait 6 months…”

I understand that it is not encouraging, a cheaper model with fixed XP1 downsides. Camera makers abuse current buzz around CSC (a way how to gain decreasing profit from shrinking compact segment). The new model come out at very high prices: NEX7, X100 & XP1, I still consider the price of E-M5 higher than it could be, not to mention a very expensive Panna’s GHx line. Now its good time to buy a DSLR for few bucks – Pentax K-30 for example – and one or two years later to get (hopefully) matured CSC for reasonable prices. I know CSC is very tempting!

  9. When I saw “cheap” and under $1,000/-, ha ha. What a joke.

“Cheap” for whom?! The folks who forked over $1,700 for the X-Pro-1 or for Fuji?

    1. I agree, for me too 1000$/1000€ is not what i call cheap. A cheap camera is something like the EOS1100D, around 500$/500€ with kit lense.

      1. you’ve got to compare to similar products… NEX 7 and OM-D are both at the $1000 mark.

nevertheless, $1000 is still a lot of money.

        1. You’re getting great low-light performance and access to high quality glass.

But when it comes to mirror-less cameras under $1000, I think the NEX-6 will be the one to beat in terms of usability.

    2. You have to factor in the lens prices as well. With the 35mm 1.4 at around $500-600, the overall package is cheaper than any other similar configuration. The NEX-7 + the sony 24mm 1.8 would be much more expensive. The Nex-6 + the 24mm would still be significantly more expensive. Of course 24mm is a different FL from 35mm but that’s really the only high quality fast lens in the “Normal FL” range available for sony so that’s the only one that I can compare to at this point.

  10. Even at $999, it is not cheap considering the need for a lens. The U.S. consumers are reluctant to spend more than $1K for a tech items right now. Over pricing would repeat X-Pro problem: after the first group of early adapters, no further buys. There is a risk of long term failure if without enough user base. I would like to suggest Fuji to including a Kit zoom lens in the package to start with.

Or at least including a Fuji adapter to use leica R lens (become a R body) or M42(Fuji M42) lens.

  11. I would think Under $1000 WITH LENSE is a real deal.

Fuji needs demand with fresh dollar payment to succeed.
