I guess the question that we have to answer is not “if” but “when” Sony will finally make their first multilayer sensor cameras. The last few years Sony patented many such Foveon alike sensor ideas. And the newest patent underlines their effort to design a much improved version of the Sigma sensor. To get rid of the corner issues of foveon sensor Sony plans to add a lens on top of the sensor. This will correct the Light Ray angle and allow a perfect sharp image on the entire frame.
Really Sony…do it now!

Great idea. Sounds more robust than a curved sensor.
Will this type of sensor work with current lenses????
Should. I think the curvature of the lens on the image is exaggerated to highlight the idea.
Getting better edges with the large sensor is a good thing. But Sigma has at least 5 years on the multi-layer sensor patent. So for the mean time this is all airy-fairy wishful thinking patent war posturing against the equally pointless Canon patents on Foveon improvements. I see the reasoning behind it Sony and Canon get leverage for a technology swap years down the road. But I would not hold your breath for something to come out tomorrow.
Many patents today are submitted on spec without even demonstration of a working prototype. These patent wars are bad for the industry and consumers as a whole.
“But Sigma has at least 5 years on the multi-layer sensor patent.”
They don’t seem to have done a lot with it, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony would be more successful.
What about the CA of that lens?
