The official Olympus 300mm lens description. But unlike their announcement the lens will ship in 2016 only.
So what about Micro Four Thirds folks? What’s coming next? Well, for sure we know that you can expect to spend your hard-earned dollar on new huge telephoto lenses:
- Olympus 300mm f/4.0 PRO lens.
- Panasonic-Leica 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3.
The two new lenses will have three things in common:
1) Both lenses will ship in Spring
2) Both are rumored to have a price tag close to $2,000.
3) Both will have in lens stabilization.

too late…
$2000 is out of the question for these lenses.
The excellent Canon 100-400L with 2x extender seems like a far more sustainable solution for that price. And it’s already available.
Olympus and Panasonic have totally bolluxed their whole super tele development and roll out strategy. Olympus announced the 300 two years ago! At the same time they announced the 2.8 40-150 zoom. Sometime after that, Panasonic discontinued development of its own 150 prime. Then Olympus delayed the 300 due to needing in lens stabilization. Then Panasonic announced a more compact and even longer zoom.
According to below, the panasonic will be around $1200 , not $2000 :

Getting ready for the Olympics?
I want to see the performance of 300/4 with E-M1(or successor). If the performance is still good with 1.4x this could be very nice light super telephoto combo. I had a chance to test 40-150 2.8 in different situations right before mass shipping a year ago and it was impressive – http://www.nonchoiliev.com/blog/2183 The question is if 300/4 can be even better 🙂
I would not buy either, but only because Olympus US would undoubtedly heavily overprice the 300mm like they did with every other PRO-marked lens. Otherwise it is a desirable lens.
